A fun and creative read with stunning artwork!
This is a book that respects a child's intelligence and understanding. The writing is funny and challenging and the pictures are moving -- these are images my son will remember! It's got a Harry Potter-like mix of scary, surprising, and cheerful moments that kept even MY interest.

Read it out loud and have fun!

My daughter loves this book!
My four year old has asked me to read her this book five times already, and we've had it for less than two days. The last time she did this was with Where the Wild Things Are. This is a truly fun book with wonderful art. The amazing thing is that I'VE enjoyed reading it each and every time.

An interesting, exciting book that I recommend to anyone with kids who like to laugh!

Entertaining and Insightful!!
Kendra drills down to the important and serious things in life, but does it in a manner that's enjoyable and fun. Her humorous stories about her family made me laugh out loud. Utilizing this humor, she guided me through the "de-junking" process of the heart in an encouraging manner. I better get busy-- it's spring cleaning time!!!

Very Insightful!
Kendra got into my heart with her delightful personal stories. She really hits home with the scripture applications. In particular she gave me new insight into 2 scrpitures that had always troubled me. Her interpretation was like turning on a light! I've started my heart cleaning process, but it will take a while. This is a book to read again as "things" start cluttering up my heart again. Thanks Kendra!

Funny and Insightful!
After reading "Give Your Heart a Good Spring Cleaning", I am reminded of the importance of keeping everything in prospective. This book offers it's reader life lessons to which you can relate and wonderful scriptural references. The reflection section at the end of each chapter helps you to apply what you've learned to your own life. Kendra Smiley has an easy writing style that is funny, light and gets straight to the point. Her book has encouraged me to sort through the junk and recognize the treasures I have stored in my heart!

Refreshing Viewpoint
The best book I have ever read regarding the birth of Christ from an aboriginal viewpoint. Those in the pulpit need to move over and make room.

Great story for adults and children
I became aware of this book yesterday when I heard Ray Buckley read it at a Christmas Tea & Tree for the Red Bird Missionary Conference. The book touched the hearts of each of those present. Small children, youth and adults were warmed with the story.

The Give-Away is for all families, with children and without. It would be an excellent resource to give to families that do not attend church.

Ray re-presents God's story of love and self-giving by sharing from his tradition the story of giving.

Beautiful Story - great illustrations.
The Give-Away is beautifully written and illustrated. Mr. Buckley's story is simply the story of Christmas, based on the tradition shared by many Native people known as 'the give-away." A friend recommended this book and I share that recommendation with you. The Native people have much to teach in their tradition of the give-away.

My Testimony
We do not have to be able to lead others to Christ to be loved of Christ. However, as a friend always wants to share the best gifts with other friends, any excited Christian has an inner desire to share his faith with those who are floundering in life.

As a young Christian I was bashful and never quite able to tell my nonChristian friends about my faith. I never led another person to faith in Christ . . . until . . . someone gave me a copy of this book. It was so simple, honest, and natural that it changed my life. Now, years later, I have been present when several dozen persons have experienced a new birth of faith in Christ.

For years this book that helped me so much was out of print. I am glad that a new generation of Christian is learning from this master of evangelism.

Shows Us How Friendly and Natural Evangelism Can Be
"How do I share my faith with others? I don't know what I'd tell them. What if I can't answer their questions? I get tongue-tied when I try to share the gospel with an unbeliever." Are these your concerns? This book shows us how friendly and natural evangelism can be. Evangelism is not for extroverts only. We all can be ambassadors of Christ to those who are in our sphere of influence. This book helps us hurdle social barriers, show non-believers how relevant Jesus Christ is today, communicate our message clearly, and how to tackle frequently asked questions asked by non-believers.

God works in the heart of a person's life. Our success is not measured by how many converts we "made." In the end if people come to faith in Jesus Christ, it's because of God's grace working in their lives. We do not save them; we simply point them to the Savior. This book gives us practical advice. What an awesome privilege to be one of God's instruments!

Inspirational & eye-opening :)
How To Give Away Your Faith is an ingenious book that points the followers of Christ to where their ministry should be focused: on showing and telling others about Him. Paul E. Little's book is very helpful in showing where our attitudes should be in witnessing (see Chapter 2: The Effective Ambassador) and how to do so properly (see chapter 3: How To Witness). In addition to these essential areas, Little explains common questions that non-Christians and some Christians ask (see Why We Believe, chapter 6). Probably the most important part of this book is Chapter 5: What Is Out Message? It is crucial for Believers to know what they believe, how to express such things, and what relevant facts must be shared in witnessing.

There are simply too many intriguing scenes in this text to mention here, so I will simply state those that most affected me. It is amazing that somewhere in every chapter was a concept I had been longing to grasp, something I knew I had needed to know. And then there were such things I had heard before, yet saw in a new light (such as the "Roman Road" in Chapter 5: What Is Our Message?). In my sincerest opinion, it is essential that the entire book be read. I have learned more than I ever thought possible with this book. Paul Little covers almost every known topic needed in witnessing.

Just so you know, this book (though revised) was originally written in 1966. And so, society having changed slightly since then (and since it was revised in 1988), the dialog and certain phrases, etc. are not completely relevant (yet still understandable). Such things as neighbors having close friendships are mostly restricted to television now in our busy 21st-Century society. Also, words such as "phooey" and "outlandish" are used every now and then. Yet, this book is still widely read, used, understandable, and effective. Its importance cannot be understated. Evangelist Billy Graham was quoted describing How To Give Away Your Faith as "A tremendous help in witnessing."

A wonderful story about friendship and parenting
Fifteen years ago, an error in judgement tore best friends, Reese Collins and Alexandra Ricci, apart. It was a mistake they both paid a heavy price for. But now, Reese needs Alex's help if he wants to fulfill his brother's request to care for his daughters in the event that something should happen to him. In order to stop their disapproving mother from obtaining custody of his nieces, Reese feels compelled to marry. Ultimately, Alex is the only woman he feels is suited for the roles of wife and mother. In order for their plan to go through, they must marry quickly and sacrifice time that is needed to fully heal the rupture of their friendship which took place so long ago.

Monica McLean writes a powerful story about the value of a strong friendship in the face of misunderstood parenting. A certified genius, Alex never felt normal until Reese brought her out of her shell. And Reese, who was adopted by the Collinses, never felt valued until Alex believed in him unconditionally. McLean also develops an excellent rapport between the three girls and the two protagonists without detracting from the development of Reese and Alex's relationship. This is the first story of McLean's I've read and it was a pleasure.

Another great book by Monica McLean!
This book has it all...romance, mystery, and intrigue! I loved this book because it got me hooked in just the first few pages. The characters are real and the story line touching. A great read!

Just another great book from Monica McLean
I really enjoyed Monica's "Cinderella Bride" and looked forward to her next book. In "Just a Wedding Away", Monica tells the story of Alexandra Ricci and Reese Collins, former lovers separated for fifteen years. The secrets they've kept from each other could destroy them - or bring them closer together. How Alexandra and Reese navigate the rocks and shoals of their past makes page-turning reading. Monica's special gift is writing heroines who are intelligent, modern women who find their soul mates in men with difficult pasts but gentle souls. Buy this book for an affirmation of how love changes the hardest hearts.

A Real Page Turner!!! -By:KET(Grade 5)
While Mrs.Coverlet Was Away, an excellent book, draws you into its pages. It tells about three children:Malcom,Molly and Toad who must help their nanny (Mrs.coverlet) when their dad travels to New Zealand. They faced and battled many problems, their biggest problem was money. They managed to come up with some super ideas for money though. One day the three children strolled through the door... Mrs.Coverlet had just got off the phonewith a serious look on her face...something was horribly wrong.

Five Stars for Mrs. Coverlet!
A terrific children's book that stands the test of time. Enjoyable reading for both young and old, the book features great characters and gentle humor. Should be reprinted today!

One of the Best from Childhood
This is one of the books I remember with fond memories. Great Boo

Louella Mae, made grandma a hit in twenty two states.
I am a grandmother of sixteen grandchildren, eight boys and eight girls ranging in age from newborn to ten years. I just completed a two month journey through twenty two states reading Louella May She Run Away to my grandchildren, their parents and to their young friends. From the East Coast, through the South, the Mid-West and across North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada and home to California, this story was a huge success. I watched young and old alike fall into the rythum of this tale and cry out the rhyming words as the pages turned, hoping they had said the right word. They found the illustrations to be eye catching and in harmony with the search for Louella May. The story brought laughter and also a happy surprise at the ending. The story has it's own spacial place in our family and will join other favorites, such as Dr.Seuss books, The Bernstien Bears, Beatrix Potter's books or Charlotes Web and the Wizard of Oz.

Storytime fun!
I have read this book aloud numerous times at toddler and preschool storytimes and it has been a hit each time. The text lends itself well to a loud southern accent and expansive gestures plus there is a delightful "surprise" ending for the kids. It doesn't disappoint!

Such a clever book with a surprise ending
Well, another discovered hit for my 5 year old daughter and me. She enjoyed finishing the clever rhyming as the characters looked for Louella Mae and much to our glee, the ending was not what we expected...Yahoo!

Return to Gone Away
Published in Hardcover by Peter Smith Pub (December, 1988)
Author: Elizabeth Enright
Amazon base price: $17.50
Average review score:

A Hint of Mystery
Enright makes her first foray into juvenile mystery as an element of this story. The Blakes have purchased Mrs. Brace-Gideon's old mansion, the Villa Caprice, just back from Gone-Away Lake, to be their summer home. The focus of the book is in their efforts to restore it--and in the children's quest to discover the hidden safe which (so their "Aunt" Minnehaha tells them) exists somewhere in the house. I always find myself wishing I could get my hands on a house like this one! Another splendid Enright, gloriously returned to print.

EXTRAORDINARY!
Elizabeth Enright is an extraordinary author. I've read three books by her (Gone Away Lake, Return To Gone Away, and The Four Story Mistake) and I wanted to know more about the families. I felt like I knew the characters. I appreciate what Miss Enright left for us.

Great characters, setting, and wonderful yarns about the past
I was happy to see this book, a few years back, as a part of a classroom reading set. I use it in my fifth grade classroom. The myterious setting, plot and unique but real characters with the yarns of the past, are beloved by fifth graders. The book is so popular I am down to fifteen copies. Our poor school district finally passed a levy and then I find its out of print. I hope that it comes back into print so I don't have to end this anxiously awaited reading.

An excellent resource!
Keister, well-known to many English teachers as the author of the Grammar with a Giggle series, has written a helpful handbook for those of us who are faced with assessment testing. Although she teaches middle school, her activities and strategies would work well in my high school classroom. She has also included modifications and suggestions for elementary students. Keister focuses on specific skills that will raise test scores considerably. For example, one skill she hones in on is the use of strong verbs. At first this seems nit-picky, but I know from experience that using vivid words can make up for a multitude of writing sins on the state writing tests. Another skill she discusses is writing the five-paragraph essay. This focus has improved my own scores on the Standards of Learning writing assessment we have here in Virginia. She provides a huge listing of practice writing prompts, a godsend to a busy English teacher. Nearly half the book is devoted to examples of student responses to state writing prompts and the score they earned. Keister emphasizes, and in my experience rightly so, teaching the students the evaluation system used in assessing their writing. The examples of student writing and the score they earned is a blessing to me as I never had enough examples to discuss with my class, let alone scored examples. The only quibbles I had with the book are minor. Keister teaches in Florida, and their rubric is different than ours here in Virginia. The differences are minor and can be compensated for. Also the organization of the book was troublesome for me. I found I had to read the entire book to get a sense of where things were located rather than use the table of contents to find specific activities or skills. My book has lots of Post-it notes sticking out of the top to mark the great ideas I want to use this year. Overall I would say that the book is a must-have for any English teacher who wants easy, time-efficient ways to score higher on state writing assessments.

Blowing Away the State Writing Assessment Test
After my first year of teaching and experiencing the stress associated with preparing for the state writing assessment, I knew I had to find something that would help me know how to prepare my students for this important test. As I stood in the middle of a teacher's store, I spotted this book. I wondered if this would be of any help. Since I was open to any ideas, I decided to take the chance and make the purchase. Happily, I admit, this was perhaps the best purchase of my entire teaching career. Mrs. Kiester's simple four-step plan was a "God-send." She puts into print each step a teacher should follow to help her students became extremely proficient writers. I have followed her plan for several years and have had great success with my students. I believe my students truly understand the writing process, and it is all due to Mrs. Kiester's Blowing Away the State Writing Assessment Test book. Hooray, Mrs. Kiester!!! This is the answer we've all been looking for!

Blowing Away Your State Writing Assessment Tests
This book is well worth the price!! I was able to turn average writers into stronger, self confident writers. Students buy into the ideas presented in the book, and take off in their writing. For the students who just need a little boost, for dramatic flair in their writing, this book is the ticket. Start today! Your students and parents will thank you for the metamorphsis they see in student writing. Share with colleagues and you'll be a star.

Fouled Away: The Baseball Tragedy of Hack Wilson
Published in Paperback by McFarland & Company (May, 2000)
Author: Clifton Blue Parker
Amazon base price: $29.95
Average review score:

Walloped!!
This book is full of lively anecdotes written in a thoroughly illuminating and informative manner. Learning about the highs and lows of Hack Wilson - one of baseball's biggest enigmas -- was a rollercoaster ride of fun. Heartily recommend it.

As Solid as Hack Wilson
I found this to be a very well written and very interesting book. Clifton Blue Parker has done an excellent and very thorough and complete research of a rather difficult subject, and pulled off a solid read from start to finish. Clifton Parker is correct in one of his assessments late in this book...People are forgetting Hack Wilson. Here today and gone tomorrow aptly applies to the career and life of Hack Wilson. That is sad indeed. Hack Wilson was a character of the game both on and off the field. What Mr. Parker has done is preserve a life, career and very important lesson in life in his book.

Clifton Parker puts Wilson's 191 RBI's into perspective and does not candy coat it. He backs it up with reasonable assumptions and hard facts. A tragic figure is Wilson, and Mr. Parker portrays him accordingly. Interesting how some of today's so-called athletes and heros are really no different than Wilson...

I consider this a must read for anyone that loves baseball history. This is as good a read as you will find. An interesting subject and an equally interesting read.

Hack Wilson De-Mystified
I read a lot of baseball biographies, and one of the worst things is reading player propaganda. It seems that hero worshipping infects far too many endeavors in the baseball arena, including biogaphies. Refreshingly, this book on Hack Wilson does not hero worship. It is a serious thorough accounting evidently based on plenty of research. It covers Wilson's rise and fall, from cradle to grave, with warts and heroics, and all. Prior attempts on Wilson's life never gave an adequate accounting of his life otuside baseball. The one thing that would have helped this book is any surviving members of the Wilson clan. That's no fault of Parker, who writes in an engaging, almost poetic, manner about this fascinating character out of Baseball's Roaring 20s. I hope to read more of his work!
