Far Away Cows - Veterinary Vignettes From the Third World
Published in Hardcover by The Book Guild Ltd. (01 November, 1998)
Author: Patrick Guilbride
Amazon base price: $43.50
Average review score:

A fascinating account full of incident, drama and humour.
The account starts in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) in 1943 soon after graduating as a Veterinary Surgeon from Edinburgh. His work then takes him to: Jamaica (1946-1957) Uganda (1957-1963) Peru (1963-1973) Brazil (1973-1975) Mozambique (1975-1982). I had bought the book primarily because of the section on Uganda, and yet I found that part least satisfactory, with some exceptions - for example his colourful descriptions of Karamoja. This is a big book, a hefty 655 pages (good value!). It is also a big book in many other ways: an epic story covering almost 40 years of veterinary service in 6 countries. It recounts Patrick Guilbride's professional and personal life, always full of incident and drama - sometimes hilarious, occasionally sad, and often risky (I lost count of the number of times he escaped death by a whisker). His frightening brushes with rabies, his clever scientific approach to a host of other diseases, make fascinating reading. The subtitle of "Veterinary Vignettes from the Third World" is apt since, within the larger chronology, one is presented with a series of incidents - each engagingly described in graphic detail.

Get-Away Hen

How about a hen looking for meaning in her life?
A hen lived in a cage in a house full of hens. gIs this it?h she asked. gIs this all there is to my life?". I picked up a paperback version with cartoon-like illustration at a car boot sale, not knowing that I would read the book to my daughter (then 3) several times and enjoy it myself. Even though there is that heavily philosophical question gWhatfs this all about?h the story is fast and full of action when the hen escapes from her safe shelter and gets a life, gasping, scared, wondering and, of course, in the end as happy as a hen can be. Naturally, that search for meaning in life was probably lost on the then 3 year old, but it makes the reading fun for the adult. My daughter is every time captured by the story - reasonably scared when the hen gets almost eaten and at the end opens her heart to the hen's sweet little chick. If you are fed up with those childrenfs books that bore you the second time you have to read it to your child; this one wonft: Funny illustrations, action, warmth, interesting story conceptc Well, this one is FUN! The pleasure in reading it matches the Cat in the Hat.

By the way, the large print and handy size should make it a good choice for beginning readers as well. Since it is a story with meaning, my age recommendation only starts at 3. It is definitely exciting enough to be read by older children (7-8). I would give the book itself five stars, one is lost for the price. Itfs just one story after all, even though in this version it was stretched over 63 pages.

Complete and well organized "healthy" vacation info
This was my first travel book. I wanted to find a vacation with structured outdoor activities where I could also keep up with my regular workout.

This book provides extensive information about many kinds of resorts and vacation programs. It is indexed by location as well as vacation/program type. It is very easy to compare one place to another. Each was described by a few free form paragraphs, followed by a list of specific info that was provided for every resort. Descriptions of the different programs were very useful. Pricing information seemed to be current (this year) and descriptions accurate when I contacted individual programs.

A minor detail, but this book is paperback, sized 5 by 9 inches. It was easy to carry around while I was deciding.

Some shortcomings are it has no photos - not one. It also doesn't list web sites, which many resorts now have. I used the book in conjunction with what I found on the web, so these inconveniences were minor.

This is a ! reference I will likely use for years to come.

Baseball and Sportmanship
The Hit-Away Kid by Matt Christopher is a story about baseball and tell telling the truth. Barry, the main character, is a good baseball player who stretches the rules a bit. He learns that he is not perfect at everything and this makes him feel better about playing baseball. We recommend this book a lot.

Growing up isn't easy
I enjoyed reading this coming of age book. Growing up with six brothers, I found that I could identify with the male teenage struggle to understand where one comes from and where one might be headed. The writing was simple, clear and humorous. As Murray Baum learns from his history teacher, he is a player as well as a researcher of life. Once he decided to be a player, he opened himself up to a few interesting adventures.

Home and Away: Chartwell Collection
Published in Paperback by Art Books Intl Ltd (January, 2000)
Author: William McAloon
Amazon base price: $42.95
Collectible price: $99.45
Average review score:

First-rate publication about a first-rate collection.
"Home and Away" accompanies an exhibition of artworks from the Chartwell collection, held in Auckland, New Zealand 1999. The collection contains major pieces of contemporary Australian and New Zealand art, and while there is nothing groundbreaking in this particular exhibition of the works, the publication is refreshingly straightforward. McAloon groups the works classically under 3 thematic headings - signs/place/indigenity, abstraction/expression/transcendence, and abstraction/material/signs. While these are not new themes, the publication concisely highlights significant issues in the recent history of Australasian art. The text is informative, yet very readable and the reproductions of the works are simply luscious! A highly enjoyable book.

An Amazing Life
This is the story of an amazing man who made --and gave away --millions of dollars practicing not just good business but good values. A non-religious conscientious objector in World War II and a lifelong rebel, Butcher pioneered socially responsible business practices and innovative entrepreneurship. . A maverick thinker who took up molecular biology later in life, Butcher writes with energy and humor about his forays into "the big questions" of science and life. And he tells how, last year, when he sold his family business, he gave away $18 million to his employees. You'll want to meet this man!
