Breaking Away From the Textbook
I purchased this book several years ago. I used it quite often to come up with lesson ideas to teach specific historical concepts. This book is especially useful if you use portfolios or authentic assessment.

I lent my book out to a fellow teacher and it was never returned. Thus, the reason for attempting to obtain a new copy.

I love this book!
I am a new high school history teacher, and this book has been invaluable to me. Using Breaking Away from the Text Book, and a bit of creativity I was able to come up with lessons that were productive, educational, and fun! My students were able to be active and enjoy history. I came to the site looking for a World History edition! None yet, but I keep hoping!

A great way to help teach your child to clean up!
My three year old daughter loves Caillou. Caillou started out as a kids tv series in france. It is now a pbs series here in the USA, and it focuses on the trials and tribulations of a young boy. The books are written in the same narrative form as the TV series. This one in particular has Caillou picking up his toys before being allowed to eat some chocolate pudding. My daughter enjoys this book and has started helping me pick up her toys. Good for a boy or a girl!

An excellent, colorful book
This is one of the best books I have ever read! It made me and my little cousins (12 and 6) want to clean up for no reason! This is a great book if you want your kids to cean up!

For people who are wondering whatever happened to romance
_Come Here, Go Away_ is a book for adults who find that they are unable to have intimate relationships. It seems to go a little too far in that the author attempts to cover both people who *have* relationships but aren't able to communicate fully with their partner, and people who haven't had relationships for many years or have never had a relationship. And I feel these are two quite different problems. It also deals with diverse issues like drug addiction and memories of childhood sexual abuse... like I said, it tries to do too much.

What's good in this book, if you're a person who hasn't had a relationship in years, is that it uncovers the lies you may tell yourself and the games you may play to avoid being close to other people. It also tells how to overcome these difficulties. If you're a person who hasn't had an intimate relationship in years (and over 1/3 of the U.S. adult population hasn't, by the way) then this book is definitely worth reading.

Come Here/Go Away
This book is very profound! I read it when it first came came out in 1992. I was in a relationship at the time and I knew it was the wrong one , but stayed anyhow. After reading this book, there were paragraphs that were such eye openers! I lost the book in a move and have always wanted another copy, so I am grateful I was still able to find one on Amazon.com! The book helped me to understand clearly the relationship I was in and what the problems were and why I shouldn't procrastinate anymore in leaving. Problems I didn't have the answers to! I found myself underling many areas in this book that so related to what I was going through. Some mine and some his! When we are in an unhealthy relationship, we don't always understand why we stay. Through reading this book, I also discovered that I was also afraid to commit, but never realized it at the time! Years later I found myself quoting things out of this book to others who were commitment phobics. The book left an ever-lasting impact on me and I hope it will for you to!

A useful source for children to learn about the world.
The color-pencil illustrations clearly depict the events and bring out a sense of appreciation for the work that is done. This book is a useful source for young children to learn about different parts of the world. More importantly, it teaches them that they can love more than one thing or person.

Lesson in Love and Letting Go
Children--and parents--will get a lesson in how letting go can be an act of love, in this lovely book about a girl who loses her doll. Mr. Sidney, a neighbor, rallies to Cara's side when she begins crying because she's lost her favorite doll, Monica. He tells Cara that Monica loves her but needs to see more of the world.

Monica has sent Mr. Sidney a note about this and will continue writing him to assure Cara that she is okay. Monica then takes a trip through several cultures--explored neatly and nicely through worlds and beautiful illustrations--all the while letting Cara explore the world herself and learn about the need to let go a little.

This is also a great lesson for parents because, instead of rushing out to buy another doll, Mr. Sidney comes up with a wonderful resolution to the problem.

Very good poetry
This is one of those books that makes me mad- for a good reason. Why is it that a poet like Kate Benedict is not recognized yet an Adrienne Rich and Sharon Olds are? To any lover of poetry, I highly recommend this book. The formalism is great- nice music, sharp images & unique turns of phrases dominate this book. Also, it has really no cliches & the approaches are fresh. Is this a perfect book? No. But the pros greatly outweigh any cons & for any new writer there is lots that can be learned from. I might place Kate Benedict somewhere among Kate Light and Elizabeth Bishop- though arguments could be made for who is stronger at what, etc. Read this & you won't be disappointed.

Energising
Accessible, versatile, accomplished, compassionate, yes. And in parts very, very funny. Benedict's 'Rienelle' was in itself well worth the purchase price of the volume to this mildly cynical reader:
No meaning, no import, no point, no wit.
I speak of nothing, not even weather.
I've nothing to say and I'm saying it.

Her elegy for the Iranian conjoined twins was vivid and touching without the least hint of false sentimentality.

The vignettes of life in a New York apartment building illuminate corners unfamiliar to those of us who know her city mainly through TV, film or popular fiction.

If, however, I was asked for one word to apply to the collection it would be 'energising'. Which is why I'm about to order a copy as a present for a good friend.

Wisdom from God's creation
This inspiring collection of interviews Gerry has done on his radio show reveals the foibles of all of us. Creatures from deer to skunks to bass and turkeys; and the attempts of hunters to harvest these creatures, are used to show that even the best and wisest of hunters needs the wisdom of God. Gerry regulary inserts Bible passages and Biblical truth to help the reader grasp the importance of eteranal values. The books entertains, instructs, and inspires. It is the kind of book a Christian could unashamedly give to an unsaved friend that would present the gospel clearly and effectively.

A gem of a book !!
This book is truly a work of art! Not only does it expose some of the funnier happenings of outdoor enjoyment but it also reveals that men and women that make a decision to serve God can enjoy life to the fullest. This collection of hillarious blunders is also a daily devotional useful for christians as well as a great gift for that unsaved sportsman that you know. Gerry presents the gospel in a practical manner in harmony with the "blunder of the day!!" This is a pleasant reading book sure to provide an uplift in your day! I can hardly wait for the next volume!!! REV.RICK

Natalie Goldberg is our girlfriend!
I feel as if I know Natalie!
After all, I have listened to all of her writing workshops and read most of her books. How cool is it to listen to a "Writing Workshop" while taking a walk in your neighborhood!?
And to listen to Natalie's (New York-Minnesota-New Mexico accent!) Loooove her.

"Old Friend from Far Away" is wonderful. Natalie gives the writer many ideas about how to get that pen moving, how to write that first sentence..."Write... I remember. My first kiss. My favorite meal is. My father was. My worse food. My favorite river."

And Details... People are really interested. Not the flower...what kind of flower. Not red...Ruby, cranberry, rose.

Get it???!!!!!! And what is Natalie's most amazing advice????

WRITING PRACTICE. If you know anything about Natalie, you would have realized that.

She reads to us from some of her favorite authors and poets. She says that "Ballad of the Sad Cafe" by Carson Mccullers is the reason she became a writer. She says that we need to name things... Spanish olive, Oak tree, Buttercup. Isn't that more concrete than olive, tree, flower!!????

Natalie tells us to get going, write, pick up the pen. And practice, practice, practice!!!!!!!

Well, what are you waiting for?!!!

Inspiring, motivating, and fun
This audio was a joy to listen to. I feel so motivated to continue writing my memoir. I took notes, but more than that I listened to Natalie's voice and felt encouraged. (Her voice made me homesick with her pronounced New York accent). She gives examples of other authors' memoirs as well as her own. She helped me keep going with my own story, which I stopped when the going got tough. Writing is the easiest activity in the world to procrastinate (easier to start a diet!) But I found myself welcomed and my life's story valued by listening to her. If you want a shot in the arm or a gentle nudge, to motivate your writing, get this tape. Thanks, Natalie!!

Siddhartha for the Grade School Set
This is the first children's picture book I've seen about the life of the Buddha, so I find it interesting for that alone. It is beautifully, though at times a bit garishly, illustrated but with the Mara depicted in it, this might have been what illustrator Fahimeh Amiri was going for. Regardless of subject, however, I sometimes think there are simply too many colors in a few illustrations when I believe a subject demands subtler colorings, but this is likely just a matter of personal taste. Besides that, the illustrations are fine except for the one of Siddhartha in his ascetic phase when he, in this picture, resembles one of those extra terrestrials I've seen in movies before. Also, in the illustration of the prophet looking at baby Gautama's feet, the feet look to be half the length of the baby's body. I say these things not to be picky but because they distracted me from the story, which I think is relevant. There are some perfectly beautiful illustrations too, that do not distract with either too much color or with distortions. One is of the Buddha meditating under the Bo Tree, when Mara is sending down fierce rains and the king of the cobras shelters Gautama from the rain. There's a color theme at work here, too, rather than the clash visible on other pages.

The story proceeds as is known--prince is born, mother dies, prophecy induces king to shelter prince from sorrow and pain, prince finds out anyway and, after a brief marriage, sets out to find the cure of suffering becoming, ultimately, the Buddha. No surprises here. Suffice it to say, however, that my 7 year old son is mad about this book, stares with wonder at the illustrations and listens intently to the story.

As an introduction to the Buddha for elementary school kids, it's a good choice.

Excellent Book!
This is one of the most moving and best books for children about Buddha's life. There are many other good books, but this one is really straight forward and clear in his life's details. I would use this books with others to teach about Buddha, but this book would be the cornerstone while teaching about his life on Earth.

Volume 4 of this manga version of Hayao Miyazaki's Oscar winning anime "Spirited Away," picks up the story as 10-year-old Chihiro is ordered by the sorceress Yu-baaba to take care of No-Face, who is disrupting the bathhouse that caters to the whims of weary spirits. Caught in the spirit world, Chihiro has seen things both wondrous and frightening. But the moody little girl we first met is slowly turning in a brave and resourceful little heroine (yes, for those of you keep score back home that would mean this is a bildungsroman anime). As she continues her adventures in these highly original wonderland Chihiro comes closer to unlocking the secrets that will help her rescue her parents and get them all back home.

This five-volume manga edition of Miyazaki-sama's masterpiece is no longer a substitute for seeing the anime now that it is available on DVD. But along with the volume "The Art of Spirited Away," these manga are another way of enjoying and cherishing this wonderful film once you have enjoyed seeing it for yourself. If you have gotten as far as volume 4 then you know the books are read "back" to "front" (i.e, right to left, like the above title for this review). The artwork consists of cells taken from the film, which will allow you to look for the little details Miyazanki puts into virtually every drawing. You can also study his use of color, which is certainly worth paying attention to as well. In terms of what you get "extra" with the manga version are the original Japanese sound effects. There is also a black wrap around cover to protect the book and remind you that "Spirited Away" is something special.

The Sister and the Golden Seal
Now that we are past the middle of this story (this is volume for of 5) the action picks up quite a bit. No Face, the spirit that young Sen let in earlier has turned into a disaster, determined to eat whatever food the bath house has to offer and paying in showers of gold. On the down side, however, the spirit has a tough time differentiating staff from the food, throwing everything into chaos.

As this is going on, Sen sees a white dragon being chased across the sky by paper birds. This is Haku, the young mage, who is badly wounded in his efforts to steal magic. Surprisingly, Sen shows fierce loyalty to her friend, courageously facing the dangers of the bathhouse in order to save his life. The girl has come a long way from the spoiled child who first happened into this strange work.

When I first found this series, the film was still unavailable to US audiences. As such they were the only option for English speakers who wanted to see Miyazaki's latest work and get a sense of the flow of the film. They do this quite well for what is essentially a still medium, spending a lot of frames building a chain of movement. This is done with cels from the film, so the normal comic approach doesn't prevail. When I look at the illustration, I think of a parent reading a book to a child and pointing to a string of pictures as, say, a dragon twists and loops in the sky.

Indeed, this set is perfect for that purpose. It is also a delightful memento of a wonderful film. Miyazaki's imagination is always stunning and unique. There are many good anime artists, but fewer great artists who happen to do anime. Film or no film, I intend to own the entire set.
