Thinking outside of the box
Great book on really being intentional in reaching the unchurched of your community. Paul Nixon gives some great practical staffing advice - areas such as hiring, etc... You can really sense the passion for seeing the church become the focal point of the community through these pages. If you feel called to be a "community" church - or a church FOR the community, this is a must read!

Community Outreach at the Organizational Level - Brilliant
This book is incredible. The ideas that Nixon conveys are brilliant and challenging, yet written so that the reading is enjoyable and fun. You cannot help but have several "aha" moments as you turn the pages of this book.
Paul Nixon demonstrates how to give the church away to the community so that it becomes a focal point for community life. This engraves community outreach into the very being of the church. It creates an avenue (or even a freeway) to share Christ with the unchurched and reestablish a relationship with those who have not been to a church in some time.
Successful churches in the 2000's MUST Fling Open the Doors and establish a true relationship with their community. Nixon is right on. I highly recommend!

NEW PARADIGM
This is the wave of the future, a book that invites a church to be, not just for the membership, but for everyone. Any church that adopts this philosophy of ministry will be a 21st Century church.
Nixon writes in a clear, easy to understand way, modeling his teaching that the church must speak in language the unchurched person can comprehend.
One of the best books on church organization that I have ever read!

A Book for Young Dog Lovers Everywhere
This book is written in short, simple sentences, using high-frequency vocabulary that's sure to make young readers successful. It tells about a dog who wants to play and the little boy who wants that dog to go away. This little dog will win the affection of very young dog lovers and little boys everywhere with his antics and determination!

Playful Pup Persuasively Pounces
A boy who is afraid of dogs meets a friendly long-haired barking fellow looking to play. He tells him to go away, but the dog insists on being friends. The dog instantly loves the boy, but the boy isn't so sure.

Your child will learn how dogs are fun to play with, and how some things aren't quite as scary as they might first appear.

The colorful, warm drawings have endured through the years, and will help bring a smile to your face.

I fully recommend "Go Away, Dog."

My "most favorite book"
I have the original version (1963) and mine has the following inscription written by my mother:

"This was a library book I checked out for Lisa when she was 4 and 1/2 years old. She loved it so much she kept putting off taking it back and one day 'could never find it again'. Later, she told me she hid it and by then I had paid the library for it. Her most favorite book then and for a long time."

I cherish my copy of Go Away Dog and am buying the new version for good friend's baby shower.

Karate "Bo" take-aways

Karate bo takeaways
Although, Mr. Trimble may not be the most acomplished writer, this book is short on doubletalk, long on realistic technique and a must have for the serious student of martial arts.

No nonsense
Guy has studied and aplied karate to a rare extent and writes to help other students see what we've been practicing all along and so very many of us didn't even realize the very practical technique "hidden" in our kata. Reading this book may make your world a bigger, richer place. See if a light doesn't come on for you in your practice.

Karate 'Bo' Take-aways
Mr. Trimble has given his time and expended his effort to the student, so the student has a practical interpretation of the hand techniques from the Shotokan Karate katas: Jutte, Empi, Hangetsu, Gankaku - Den and Kanku - Sho.
His presentation clearly leads the student through defensive and offensive applications of the hand techniques found in the Shotokan kata. Better than theory, the concept of Ma covered between an unarmed opponent and an armed opponent gives the student a taste for the real time application of the demonstrated techniques.
Karate 'Bo' Take-aways is the guide to brighten the students interest in the Shotokan Karate hand techniques used against the long staff.

Great for adults too, especially if you retire early!!
I am 29 years old and read this book when I was a child...I am building my own internet business and plan to "escape" the employee world. When I retire early, I am going to give a copy to my employer as if to say....."the little fish that got away...."

I can't believe I found it.
I'm 35 years old and this was my favorite book as a child. I've looked high and low thinking that it was a Crockett Johnson book, because of the unique drawings. Turns out, he only illustrated it.

This is an easy read for beginning readers and a great story-time book for the younger ones. What a great time we live in that a person can go on a computer and find several copies of a book that was last printed in 1969. It would've taken me years to find it in book stores. Thank you Amazon.

An excellent beginner book!
I remember my mother reading this book to me and recently found it to read to my children. THEY LOVE IT!!! It is full of repetition and has a great predictable storyline. The illustrations are tri-color and wonderful. I highly recommend this book!

Where Have You Gone, Jim Marshall?
One of America's pre-eminient rock photographers surfaces. Jim Marshall's work was a fixture of the '60s and some of the '70s, especially when it came to the Summer of Love and SF. But then like Flower Power & the '60s, Marshall indeed "faded away." His later output in the '70s and '80s is devoid of post-'60s icons as Springsteen, who had a huge pre-Time/Newsweek magazine following here, as well as others. I first met him 12 yrs ago when he sold me one of his photos. I was familiar with his work with Life (Stones 1972 tour) and before and was thrilled to be able to meet the man. At the time I wondered why he hadn't published a book yet. Now here it is and for the most part it delivers bigtime. Great insights delivered via the photo captions; sometimes when Marshall compliments an artist ("so-&-so was the greatest") it might come off a bit on the light side but you can't really complain. His work speaks for itself. It was powerful and awesome. Also in the book are photos of recent performers such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Maybe it's the Times...maybe it's the Subjects...but these recent photos didn't belong in this book at all. It's great to see Marshall's more current work, but I think quite a bit of the magic was missing. Marshall himself acknowledges this. If anybody can conjure this old feeling back through the art of photography, he can.

music photographs in the highest regard
a beautiful music book from a very opinionated photographer. both text and images are the top shelf material.

This incredible photo book should get 11 Stars!
So MUCH ink has been spilled about the 60's & early 70's, most of it overblown or off base in someway. Marshall's black and white photos (most of them taken by a Leica without flash!) get to the heart and soul of the times in ways most writers can only dream of...I can't wait until the color volume comes out. Powerful stuff (like a shot of great whiskey), a must have for any music fan. The HIGHEST recommendation!

Far Away and Long Ago

Authors: W. H. Hudson and Stephen J. Bodio

Childhood in the Pampas
Hudson is a wonderful writer, and this is a first hand account of his childhood in gaucho land, with invaluable glimpses of Buenos Aires at the setting of Rosas dictatorship and after.

A neglected masterpiece
We badly need to have this book once more available. Full of insights into the meaning of human life in nature, it also chronicles the passing of a virgin landscape in S.America with the coming of a predatory civilization. Hudson came of age with little schooling but endless hours of observing life (especially birds) and reading. His friends in England, where he went in his 30s, often wondered why he was habitually sad. This profound reminiscence explains why.

Simple pleasures are the best
"When I hear people say they have not found the world and life so agreeable or interesting as to be in love with it...I am apt to think they have never been properly alive nor seen with clear vision the world they think so meanly of...".

The author says it all. I picked up this book in a little Gloucester bookshop a few years ago, but I've finally just had a chance to read it in its entirety. What a Joy! It reminded me that the stresses and travails we encounter in our daily lives are so trivial at best, compared to the world we pass by everyday. The author's recollection of his boyhood on the Argentinian pampas and his adventures with snakes and birds and vizcachas made his words come alive, and I felt I was there with him. A treasure and one I would read to kids who have the gift of spirit in them, and to remind them that all of what he wrote is disappearing.

Good for retiring abroad only
Can't add much to the previous reviews, but be very clear that this book is primarily aimed at people who want to retire OUTSIDE the U.S. It also seems to assume that everyone has lots of money laying around (or own and can sell a home)and they can put that money into CD's and live off the interest. Not all bad, but seems to focus on the few areas of the world that they're most familiar with (France, Portugal, Mexico)

The Well Traveled Book...
Wow! The cover of this book is tattered from all the passing around. It has gone from one family member to the next. Those of us who were not patient enough to wait our turn have purchased it. Three copies in all are circulating. I found it inspiring because she speaks to the adventurer inside of me, not my fear. Her approach is gentle, liberating, and comprehensible. She spells out the complex issues. The chapters cover the all important steps and questions about going abroad for an extended stay and whether or not it's right for you.

Solid, Nuts-and-Bolts Advice for Adults
Filled with practical advice covering both the philosophical ("Don't you love your country?" objections) and the practical (a recommended cat carrier), Knorr breaks a complicated, life-changing idea into specific, do-able tasks. Anyone who has thought about living overseas for months or years must read this book.

Beginning with a personality assessment for the would-be expatriate, Knorr guides the reader through a step-by-step analysis of moving overseas. As the title implies, this is a book for adults who may be encumbered with houses, aging parents, life-long living patterns and other apparent obstacles to making a major life change.

Knorr's cautious approach and practical information are designed to produce either a successful sojourn overseas or the avoidance of what might turn out to be an impulsive mistake.

Ignore Your Teeth and They'll Go Away: The Complete Guide to Gum Disease

better late than never!!
All I can say is I wish I had seen this book a few teeth ago!
Fortunately there is still time to save the rest of my teeth with the clear advice of Dr Sydney. I take the book with me to my periodontist to make sure he is up to date!

Fear has always kept me away from the dentist, but no more!
When I was told that I had gum disease, I got really scared and of course wanted to ignore the advice of my dentist and the obvious signs in my mouth that something was wrong! Fortunately, I read Dr. Sydney's no-jargon guide and now I know that most of my fears were based on fiction and not fact. RECOMMENDED reading for cowards and the enlightened who want to save their teeth. The easiest visit to the dentist I ever had!!

Ignorance Is NOT Bliss!!
I thought I could ignore my teeth and the would NOT go away...I was wrong! After loosing two teeth, I went to my dentist and he said "you need a periodontist!". Fortunately, I read Dr. Sydney's book BEFORE I got there. What a relief to find out that even though I had lost two teeth there was still time and modern therapy to save the rest. My treatment is almost completed now and the guide and my periodontist showed me that while ignorance is not bliss there was still time to get my gums healthy when you have the true facts presented. I recommend this book to all the cowards among us. It's easy to read, comprehensive and according to my periodontist accurately represents today's state of the field. I have given the book to a number of my friends who told me their gums were bleeding but thought that was normal. This book is an eye-opener for those who have had their heads in the sand. Take it with you on your professional visits it really helped me to understand all the treatments.

First time to read a Marylyle Rogers book
When I purchased this book it was nothing like I thought it would be. I enjoyed it but found a few errors in names and got a little confused. I think I would have enjoyed it even more if I had gotten to read the books prequal. It kept me entertained and I found myself not wanting to put it down.

Fabulous/marvelous stories of magical romance!
The 1st story to this marvelous tale began in a short story found in two books called "Sprinkle of Fairy Dust" & "Emerald Enchantment" when we first meet fairie King Comlan's sister Lissan and his brother Gair who fall in love w humans.

Followed up by the marvelous story of King Comlan and his beloved human Amy in "Once Upon A Time" and their daughter Lissan's story in "Happily Ever After."

In "Long Ago and Far Away" we have the concluding story of Lissan's human husband's daughter, Hildie, who, it turns out is the descendant of King Comlan's sister, Lissan. As his neice, the King sends Kieron from his fairy realm to be her guardian.

As Hildie grows in age and beauty she has fallen in love with Kieron, who has taken an oath to protect her and that means he must not fall to her charms. The problem is he is already falling for her and she is to be betrothed to another for the sake of her father's kingdom.

As things go, an ancient evil has befallen both fairie and human lands and only Hildie can save the two worlds. If she fails, both worlds will be destroyed by the impending danger. But can she accept her destiny and risk loosing the man she loves in the trying?

All of these stories are wonderful and I was sad to see them end, but joyed for having read all of them.
Marylyle Rogers' writing is pure joy. Please read all of these books. They are marvelous!

A magical love story
This story is about Hildie, half mortal and half fae, growing up in the mortal world with Kieron her faithful fae guardian. He watches her grow from a child into a young woman and each fall in love with the other knowing that because of the laws they can not be together. However their destiny steps in when Kieron realizes that Hildie is the key to disspelling the curse that could destroy both the mortal and fairy realms and keep them apart for all time.
