Pretty helpful
This book is helpful for people with chronic pain and especially for those with fibromyalgia. Gayle Backstrom writes this book with the idea that all parts of our body are connected (mind/body/spirit), therefore she gives helpful suggestions that include all areas.

Fair warning though, this book is a bit on the technical side. So, if you have 'fibro fog' it may be hard to get through and/or understand sections. I recommend reading it on days when you are clearer. Or, do what I did - have someone else read the section and then explain it to you. I had to do this with the research portion of the book.

Subjects covered in this book include, symptoms, latest research, physical treatment, cognitive therapy and support systems.

There are also many appendixes such as: a list of arthritis chapters, a list of resources, surfing the web and a list of fibromyalgia researchers.

I found this book to be helpful, though it wasn't one of my favorite fibromyalgia books. For my favorite ones you can check out my 'about you' area and look at the ones I have reviewed and my self-help book listmania list.

I read this book for more help dealing with fibromyalgia, but I found that I was giving my mom advice from the book, since she suffers from chronic pain in her back/neck, hips and wrist/thumb.

A good resource book for Fibromyalgia.
Defintely worth reading. A good reference book for those diagnosed with Fibromyalgia or those wishing to have a better understanding of FMS. I found the personal account of the author's experience very true to life. (I have Fibromyalgia.) This is real life, and those looking for a miracle storybook ending won't find it here. This book deals addresses the fact that Fibromyalgia is real and won't just go away, however it also deals with the many aspects of how people can deal with Fibromyalgia.

YOUR NEW BEST FRIEND
I read this book a few yrs. after being diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I cannot begin to describe the sense of relief and companionship this book brought to me. When friends, loved ones, & acquaintances are "diagnosed", This is the first "therapy" I recommend and/or purchase for them as a gift. It gives the reader a sense that she/he is not alone. The authors have a way of "validating" the person suffering, and helps the others in their lives understand and offer compassion. I have lived with fibromyalgia, and several other autoimmune disorders for 7+ yrs now. I still consider this book the best first step in treatment! Well worth the investment and time. The only thing I disagree with in the edition I still own, is that the use of narcotic pain medications is highly admonished...so often, and to a degree that can make the reader/sufferer that must rely on such medications to function feel guilty. Since fibromyalgia is so often accompanied by other rheumatic-like conditions, I would never want ANYONE to add GUILT to their endless list of problems and symptoms. There is a place for narcotics in the treatment of fibromyalgia. Many people (myself included) are unable to take NSAIDS, and the only other medicinal alternative is maintenance narcotics.(In addition to antidepressents, muscle relaxants, etc.) Research is finding that within the FM population, NSAIDS (non steroidal anti-inflamatories) are not well tolerated by the FM patient. This is one of the best FM companions available!

The Boy Who Went Away

Set in the suburbs of New Jersey in the summer of 1967, The Boy Who Went Away is a skilled debut novel that tells the story of one boy's maturation and the change a single summer visits on his troubled family. Denny is a sneak who begins the story playing domestic spy: listening in on phone conversations, steaming open the mail, and interloping on his mother, father, and his autistic brother, Fad. His Eddy Haskell of a friend Derwent helps usher Denny into an adolescent world of sex and irresponsible actions, and his spying uncovers a set of circumstances that teach him even more about adult life, namely his mother's infidelity and the looming institutionalization of his brother, who is prone to rocking in place and uttering comments like, "I want to be a wooden world that stays in one place so I can touch it whenever I want to." Together, the combination of his mother's love, his father's wits, and the simple love of a bothersome brother creates a moving story about the basic components of family life. The youthful prankishness and frank language keep the story moving and honest, and the book perfectly captures the way a single summer changes and seasons a young man's life.

Amazing
This book is amazing my daughter is autistic I love her dearly I would never let anything bad happen to her . She means the world to me.

Ever had a difficult brother?
Sad, and yet at times almost hilarious, "The Boy who went away" sheds new light on the life of troubled families. Absolutely remarkable. A must read

An excellent novel
This is a touching and beautifully written book about a troubled young man and his family. The author succeeds brilliantly at two very difficult things: 1) he manages to write believably from the point of view of a disturbed teenager, making him both sympathic and--at times--difficult to take; 2) he creates an honest portrait of motherly love, with all its hopes and despairs. It's one of the best characterizations of a mother in modern American fiction, in fact. I highly recommend this book.

A bit of this, a bit of that.
This book is targeted on people who are suffering from something and want to do acupressure on themselves. Personally, I was looking for a book about performing acupressure on someone else!
First of all, this book includes Acupressure, Shiatsu, reflexology and a little bit of yoga (Very briefly). For a 386 page book, it is just too many topics to cover, and it's understandable that nothing is in depth. Secondly, the pictures are just as brief as the writings. Finally, the A-Z guide covers a lot of topics from Acne to tinnitus to impetance to PMS, it takes up the book from page 78 onwards.
My conclusion is, this book is no where detailed enough for someone who is serious about acupressure, and for someone who wants to do a little acupressure on themself, unless you suffer diseases from A-Z, you'll only find 10 pages of this book useful. Hope this information is more useful than the book.......

Perfect
When I bought this book, I was looking for a book that would teach me how to perform accupressure on myself or others. Jack Forem's book does this, and more: it also covers basic reflexology, Shiatsu, and contains sections with "additional suggestions" to speed recovery. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants something practical about accupressure on their bookshelf.

A "user friendly" guide that belongs on every bookshelf
This is a complete, well balanced and easy to read guide on the subject. I have used the book's "A to Z" guide several times in the past few weeks to "self treat" localized symptoms. The illustrations make it very easy for anyone to figure out where the important points are. The authors walk you through the whole process step by step. Ahhhhh! Temporary relief from localized pain every time I tried the book's recommendations. And the "energy tune up" section alone is worth the price of the book. There is even a section on beauty secrets! I also found the "additional suggestions" section that follows every topic area particularly helpful. Finally...the perfect holiday season gift for all my achey breaky friends.

its fun, but don't try to make sense out of anything.

Screenplay
Hard to find and fun to read, another addicting tale by Anton-Wilson. Intoxicating and bizarre turns of event that will tempt you to read it backwards to see how it all ends.

Oh, STOP please!
I laughed until I started coughing up blood. This is without question the funniest script I've ever read in my life, but if I told you why, I'd have to kill you.

Greed and power conflicts in a religious movement
An attractive, well-thought-of minister's wife in Philadelphia, a woman who grew up on the water, is missing. Her sailboat, with two close friends aboard has gone unreported. Now her widower, Dr. Carl Houseman, wants some answers. He turns to private investigator Terri Blake-Addison, a scrappy woman who pulls few punches and has a clear understanding of her limitations. No superwoman here, just real folks.

There is a problem. Terri is locked in a distracting process with members of her church because she wants to teach Sunday school and there are apparently some who object. Other problems occur. Dr. Houseman is the head of a vast and growing media ministry that's finally worth a whole lot of money. And, the case is already old; his wife died five years ago.

Blake-Addison takes the assignment and follows the trail to a remote Maine village where Ellen grew up and where she apparently died. The more the investigator probes and peels back old and new secrets, the more complex becomes the picture. Author Hall has done a first rate job of balancing two interesting threads and keeping the reader aware of their intersections. Why did Ellen Houseman become unhappy in her role in the Houseman Empire? How much antipathy and jealousy were present in the second rank of executives? How did the secret relationships among residents and visitors in the tiny Maine village affect Ellen and her friends? What really happened to Ellen Houseman?

The exploration of religious empire building and the very human intercepts played out against the tiny but important individual crises and triumphs in Maine is enthralling and constantly interesting. Hall has done a fine job with this book.

A Great Introduction!
I cannot wait for another mystery with sleuth Teri! Pamper yourself: pour some fresh-brewed tea and curl up with Linda Hall - sure not to disappoint!

Wonderful!
This was such a fun book to read! I was hooked from the first line. I like the fact that Ms. Hall uses some actual locations in her stories. This was a great mystery story and I'm looking forward to the next book of the series.

Where rock scribes are concerned, you've got provocateurs of the Lester Bangs school, academics of the Greil Marcus variety, and the nuts-and-bolts sorts who, while perhaps less colorful wordsmiths, excel at capturing their subjects by putting them at ease. Early Rolling Stone contributor/editor Ben Fong-Torres may be the best known and most durable member of that third school. Not Fade Away gathers 34 Fong-Torres profiles and interviews ranging from Woodstock-era pieces centering on Sly Stone and Janis Joplin to '80s articles on Eddie Murphy and Tom Hanks. Despite the occasional foray into film writing, Not Fade Away centers around rock & roll. Solid journalist that he is, Fong-Torres can stretch from James Brown to Neil Diamond, from Bob Dylan to Iggy Pop--all without straining. Vignettes update and add color to Fong-Torres's out-of-the-archives articles. --Steven Stolder

A little disappointing but maybe it was my fault
I bought this book after seeing Cameron Crowe's "Almost Famous". That was an exceptional movie and I thought I would relive the era through Ben fong-Torres, who was featured in the movie.

The book is really a reprint of many of his stories in Rolling Stone which the reviews probably stated and I didn't focus on. I would have preferred his story of being close to the Rock and Roll scene. Reading some of the articles that were over 20 years old became somewhat boring and outdated. I did learn quite a bit in some of the stories and Fong-Torres does provide some narrative on each story although it is limited. Overall though, I'd take a pass on this one and look for another if you are looking for a good book about rock in the 70's and 80's.

Title Says It All
If you weren't around in the 70s, or you want to "relive" this era, Ben Fong-Torres' book is a good place to start. It's a collection of many of his Rolling Stone feature articles, along with a brief update of the personalities involved. Having "come of age" in the 70s, it brought back memories of my own and it gave me insights into some of the most famous rock personalities of the 70s and early 1980s.

Fong-Torres has an excellent writing style and "captures" a little bit about what made a lot of these musicians "tick." His articles are enjoyable to read or re-read if you've seen them before. While part of the title (A BackStage Pass to 20 Years of Rock n Roll) may seem cliched, it fits here. Fong-Torres in his Rolling Stone articles managed to catch a glimpse of an era now long gone.

The Best of Ben Fong-Torres
A better title would be the Best of Ben Fong-Torres. This book is a collection of articles he wrote for "Rolling Stone". Some of the people written about in this book are Jim Morrison, Bob Dylan, The Jackson 5, Janis Joplin, Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye, The Jefferson Airplane, The Rolling Stones, Santna, Ricky Nelson, and many others. What really makes the book worth reading is that he gives information on what he had to get the interview and what happened after. Sometimes, the behind the scenes information are as good as or even better than the article.

Run Away From Fat

Not for the really unfit
This book looks like a great plan to follow to get fit - if you're young, or fairly fit to begin with. On day 1, for example, you're supposed to run to 10 minutes. Well, if I could run for 10 minutes, I wouldn't need a book to get me in shape! If I could run for 10 minutes, that would probably mean running for more than a mile, since I can walk a mile in under 15 minutes.

The author, in the preface, explains that he came upon the running-keeps-you-fit realization while in graduate school, after having gained 7 pounds (horrors!) over the course of a semester. So, if that's the kind of weight problem you have, this book is probably great. But if you're middle aged, have been inactive for years, and have a weight problem that's a little more like that of mosy Americans looking fro diet books, this book won't work until you get a lot fitter first.

Terrific guide to running!
I love this book. I could barely run two minutes without stopping, but somehow being told to run 10 minutes gave me the mental push to actually do it. I soon learned that the first 10 minutes are always the hardest. Once you get past those 10 minutes, your body is warmed up and your breathing becomes more relaxed, and you can go a lot longer. If you expect it to be easy, then maybe running isn't for you. But if you're serious about becoming a runner, this book is for you. Although I was close to 50 pounds overweight when I started the book, I was able to follow it religiously. I just wish he had another one for the next 90 days. I guess it's time for me to start his 4 hour marathon book!

Start Running!
This book is so great! I was looking for a book that didn't start you out with a walk/run combonation (because i already did that). Instead I wanted a book that would start you running right away. I think this book was just what I was looking for. It takes you through each day and it gives you tips for each day and also acts as a running log. To those who are seriously out of shape right now I would recommend you start with even a smaller segment of time or try 10 minutes of walk/running first, because the first day you are suppose to run 10 minutes straight (which can be a little tough at first). I challenge anyone to give this book a try, it's really awesome!

Stop wishing and just read this great book![.]
I read this entertaining book on Thanksgiving Day and am so thankful of the message the Author tries to deliver. Sure, the story can be edited down in some places, but maybe the wacky sense of humor keeps you read on. Well, some people like shortcuts while others prefer the scenic routes. Bottomline is you can finish this book in about 3 hours. And that's not a lot at all if that 3 hours spent will improve the quality of your life. At the end of my reading, I (a typical procastinator) actually took some action just exactly as the Author advised. And I'm confident that the future me will be more successful, more passionate and definitely happier (just like Mack, Monica and George in the story). Buy this book, read it, AND DO THE EXERCISE AT THE END. Your wish shall be granted!

I was impressed Again
I'm a fan of Jon Spoelstra's work since I accidently picked up Marketing Outrageously. This is the second of his work, and again the author grabbed me in the first chapter. Three hours later, I finished the book. It was full of insight, similar to Who Moved the Cheese. I highly reccomend this.

Success Is Just One Wish Away
I thought Writers Group review was a little snotty. I read the book and I really loved the story and it jolted me into doing some new and terrific things. As for it being short, I liked that. I've lent the book out and people have read it in one sitting, got inspired and thanked me for it. My review isn't as a professional critic but one from somebody where a book made a real difference in my life.

The Way the Family Got Away: A Novel

A weird read
I absolutely hate to give bad reviews, but from my viewpoint this story was awful. Maybe I was just repulsed by the whole storyline, or maybe I couldn't STAND the irritating drivel coming from these poor children's mouths, all I know is that the whole thing drove me nuts! Perhaps, that was the point! I think the author wanted to write something very different and engaging. As I can see, some reviewers loved the book. I found it draining and exasperating. For some great surrealism, read The Waves by Virginia Woolf or 100 Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez - fine writers.

The Linguistic Universe
Kimball speculates brilliantly on the linguistic and imaginative universe of childhood. The games that the children play with their string and paper dolls represent bizarre yet moving attempts to come to terms with the death of their little brother and the new pregnancy of their mother. Inner and outer worlds are blurred in a series of strange symbolic exchanges as the difficulties the children have in coming to terms with the experience of death, sex, loss and birth are presented. The imaginative challenges of writing about childhood using only the intellectual resources of childhood are formidable. Kimball meets them head on and has written a visceral, wrenching and compelling account of a family's collapse. That the formal challenges are met with determination and success, that the novel appears to have been wrested whole from a landscape of devastation and pain allows the reader a certain exhilaration as well.

Truly a Redefining of American Literature!
And it couldn't come at a better time. You've never read anything like this book. Buy it and read it now. After you've read it, read it again. Michael Kimball is one of the most promising writers of the new millennium. One hundred and sixty pages of finely-crafted genius--Kimball is a master of rhythm and melody, delivering a story as powerful as a hammer blow to the soul. If you have a weak heart, suffer back problems, or are a pregnant woman, step out of the car to the left. If you are ready to experience something bold, new and exciting, then this ride is for you.
