A BEAUTIFUL LOVE STORY
How an older husband and father held his family together when his wife became terribly ill is gratifying. It, indeed, makes the reader see the love of an older couple. When trying times hit this family, they face reality with love and courage. The head of the family walks by faith and is most often at his wife's side during the long years contained in this must-read book. It serves as an inspiration to readers who may someday be faced with the day-to-day trama that faced this family. Details of the human brain and medical science are of educational value. It is truly a great read.

"Aren't you even going to knock?"
Having little or no will power, I have succumbed to the temptation to pick up more of these little specialty manga created from the cells of Hayao Miyazaki's latest anime creation, 'Spirited Away.' This film has been a runaway bestseller in Japan, and is due for release in the US shortly. When I bought the first volume as a novelty, my greatest concern was that the books would 'spoil' the plot. However, after reading two volumes, I find I'm even more interested in seeing the film, which looks every bit as remarkable as 'Princess Mononoke,' another Miyazaki hit.

These are the story of Chihiro Ogino, a young girl whose parents have inadvertently wandered into a bathhouse for spirits and been turned into pigs. Chihiro is determined to rescue them and discovers that she must find a job in the bathhouse or suffer the same fate of her parents. This volume is the story of her quest for employment, starting with the spider-like Kamaji who runs the hot water system to the giant Yubaba who is the matron of the resort. One has to admire Chihiro's determination, even though she is actually a bit irritating in a little girl way. Of course, I might be a bit self-centered and panicky if I found myself in the comic version of Motel Hell.

The styling is classic Miyazaki, with great work on the expressions of both the human and non-human characters. These last come in every shape and type imaginable. The dialog is minimalist. Often, the plot is moved forward by the visual story, full of both menace and sight gags. Another thing I like is, since the sound effects are in Japanese, someone has gone to the immense trouble of providing a frame-by-frame translation of them. Just the thing for an adult who wants to read these aloud to a child.

One warning. These manga done in Japanese order [right to left, top to bottom]. At first, this is a bit confusing, but after a while, it gets to be fun. In addition, it preserves the effect of the original manga page layouts, which really is the best way to present them. If these manga aren't over-distributed, then they may very well be eminently collectable.

This was a very interesting book for me to read because Edward Lee Howard's son lives by me and goes to school with my sister. I also think it was very informative on how he got away.

An excellant western
I have loved all the books about Tap and Pepper. I am exceptionally grateful that Mr. Bly did not leave them at the altar. A person could be forgiven believing in the Cinderella syndrome the way most authors leave their characters. Mr. Bly does an excellant portrait of women. It is the rare male author I read that does women well. Of the Western authors I have read, I have to go back to Zane Grey to get a satisfying heroine. Usually I want the shake the heroine or the author, but Pepper comes across as a brave, level-headed woman, in keeping with the times. I look forward to the next series.

Watts' hero Randall Davies, although a burglar and a robber, is really a sweet guy and a sucker for women. Once again it is a sexy, if mean, woman who gets him in trouble when she demands that he dispose of her husband. But Randall finds he has to take a number, for the nasty husband has other enemies, including a mistress and her psycho boyfriend. Despite this sordid scenario, Watts writes with humor and wryness, and his crooked hero is still too decent a man to get drawn in to the darker depths his siren is calling him to.

Excellent noir.
Timothy Watts is one of the literary community's best-kept secrets. His other books Cons, Money Lovers, and Feeling Minnesota are all excellent

Steal Away

Steal Away is about a girl named Susannah that teaches a slave named Bethlehem how to read. They runaway and become good friends, but when they reached their destination Bethlehem dies. Now Susannah is alone.

Susannah is one of the main characters along with Bethlehem. Susannah helps Bethlehem runaway to go to Vermont. They dress like boys; so they will not be captured; by Susannah's uncle. If Bethlehem gets caught she will be beaten to death and Susannah will be punished for running away and teaching a slave how to read.

Susannah has a problem because she is trying to keep it a secret that she is teaching Bethlehem how to read. Slaves where not allowed to learn how to read. Susannah also, is trying to return to Vermont where she lived with her deceased parents were, also because everyone is equal.

Susannah solves the problem by running away and taking Bethlehem with her. Once they reached Vermont Bethlehem died. Susannah was sad because she became very close to Bethlehem and now she was gone.

I think this book is good because we learned that it doesn't matter what color you are everybody is equal. I would recommend this book to other people because it teaches you that it doesn't matter what color you are you can become good friends. Another reason why I would recommend this book is because we are not anyone's property. This is a good book it kind of gives you a summary of how the civil war started. Also, how slaves were treated in the 1800's.

Poetry worth reading and studying for years to come.
The most touching collection of poems I've seen in nearly 25 years. The author is able to arrange words and transform text, lifting images, scenerios, and emotion out of the page and into the readers imagination. The depth of the writing is quite fulfilling.
