A GREAT & TOUCHING TRIBUTE TO THE MAN WHO TOUCHED OUR LIVES!
This book has it all. Stories from fans, DeadHeads, personal friends, associates, etc. Touching anecdotes. Humor. Love. Peace. And of course...THE MUSIC! No matter what your story is or how you "got on the bus" you deserve to have the oppurtunity to read this book. I promise you, whatever your connection to the Dead is, there is a story in here expressing your feelings. AMAZING. Please buy it, it is well worth it. All DeadHeads need to read this book (although I feel even someone who didn't even like the Dead would find this book equally amazing). I cannot say enough good things about this book. When I got through with my copy, I gave it to a friend because I was so touched I had to do something generous. Keep the "Unbroke Chain" alive my friends. Peace!

Provides concrete Bible-based steps for Christian living
With On A Hill Too Far Away: Putting The Cross Back Into The Center Of Our Lives, John Fischer explores the centrality of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ to the Christian faith. Drawing upon the image of a 15-foot cross bolted front and center inside a Connecticut church, Fischer provides concrete Bible-based steps for Christian living. Other very highly recommended Fischer titles for a Christian readership include Ashes On The Wind; Saint Ben; The Saints' And Angels' Song; 12 Steps For The Recovering Pharisee; and True Believers Don't Ask Why.

Rare insight from a modern Framer
Few living Americans can claim credit for the Constitution in the way that Birch Bayh can. Bayh, then a first-term senator from Indiana, chaired the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Constitutional Amendments at the time of President Kennedy's assassination. Vice President Johnson's succession to the Presidency left a vacancy in the vice presidency--a situation that had occurred after the other seven vice-presidential successions, but that was suddenly far less acceptable in the nuclear era, with a Cold War on. The crisis was exacerbated because the next two successors in line for the Presidency were 71-year-old House Speaker John McCormack and 86-year-old Senate President pro tem Carl Hayden, who had been chosen for reasons other than their fitness as Presidential successors.

The crisis was solved (up to a point, at least) by the twenty-fifth amendment, which was proposed in 1965 and ratified in 1967. "One Heartbeat Away" tells the story of the amendment's drafting, proposal, and ratification, which Senator Bayh presided over and shepherded. This book offers a rare insight, practically unique in modern times, into successfully resolving a structural dilemma of modern government by means of amending the Constitution. Presidents Eisenhower and Johnson, who were both very engaged in the issues and the process, contributed prefaces.

If you are interested in the twenty-fifth amendment and its legislative history, I also recommend "The 25th Amendment" by John D. Feerick. If you are interested in Presidential succession and disability generally, I recommend "Presidential Succession" by Ruth C. Silva and "From Failing Hands" by John D. Feerick.

I really liked this book. Although I don't like the way it turned out. Jessica finally finds the perfect guy and then an old flame that was a jerk comes a long and screes things up. But the sad thing is I think Jessica still has a thing for Will even though she has Jeremy, the perfect boyfriend!

Excellent Book on Paul's view of Perseverance
Anyone who is interested in a more balanced and Biblical understanding of "eternal security" or "perseverance of the saints" should consult this book. Gundry-Volf does an excellent job presenting the traditional Reformed view of perseverance and security through the writings of Paul. The exegesis and detailed analysis of difficult warning passages are outstanding. The book is divided into four sections that deal with Paul's perspective on how believers continue in the salvation already given to them through faith in Christ. The first section deals with the various passages that speak of Paul's understanding of soteriological security. Passages that are examined include: Romans 8:29-30; Philippians 1:6; 1 Corinthians 1:8-9, and several others. According to Gundry-Volf, Paul strongly argued FOR eternal security throughout his letters. The second section deals with how immoral conduct affects Christians' security according to Paul. According to Gundry-Volf, ethical failure among true believers does NOT jeopardize their salvation as proven by passages in Romans 14:1-23; 1 Corinthians 8:7-13; 11:27-34, but can lead to spiritual impoverishment and divine chastisement (even leading to physical death). However, certain more "grievous" sins practiced as a lifestyle can call into question the reality of salvation among certain members of the visible church (1 Corinthians 5:1-5; 6:9-11; and Galatians 5:19-21). Therefore, sin cannot interrupt the continuance of a believer's salvation, but serious sins practiced as a lifestyle demonstrate an unregenerate heart. The third section deals with Paul's understanding of Israel's election and how Israel fits into Paul's understanding of eternal security, and how professing Christians show themselves to be unsaved by abandoning the true Gospel. Gundry-Volf does an excellent job showing that Paul believed that Israel as a whole would someday convert to Christ before the Parousia (Romans 11:26), and that Paul doesn't hold out hope for salvation to those who turn away from or resist the Gospel presenting by him (Galatians 5:1-4). The last section deals with how Paul understood his calling as an Apostle and how his readers would be affected by his Apostolic mission. According to Gundry-Volf, Paul wished to "win the race" for approval, not for salvation (1 Corinthians 9:27). He wanted to successfully bring as many people into the Kingdom so that he may receive an eschatological reward on top of his salvation. He didn't question his salvation, but only his effectiveness as an Apostle. However, he feared that his labour would be in vain if his readers didn't respond to the Gospel he presented in a favourable way. Yet, he didn't question the salvation of those who responded positively; only those who rejected the Gospel and his Apostleship were in danger of proving themselves as unregenerate. Gundry-Volf's book lacks the shallow proof-texting of some who have written books on the same topic (e.g., Dan Corner). This book is very scholarly and thoroughly exegetical. Every difficult passage is examined and explained. However, I would recommend readers to learn some Biblical Greek and modern German before tackling this book since Gundry-Volf tends to use many Greek phrases and cite many German scholars. Overall, this is an excellent book for those wanting a better understanding of this very important issue.

growing up when you are not young
I haven't finished this book yet, but have found a lot of helpful insights into my behavior and the behavior of others and why we act the way we do at times, especially when we don't want to act the way we do. I recommend this for anyone who is trying to figure out some of the whys in their lives.

New Stories and Solutions
When you pass a person on a corner asking for spare change, what do you think? After more than thirty years of working with poor children and their families in DC, Fred Taylor has a pretty good guess. Either you tend to have a "liberal" response and blame society, or a more "conservative" response and blame the individual. But neither view, Taylor believes, helps us get closer to the goal of saving more children from growing up to be that person on the corner.

Taylor has written a book, Roll Away the Stone: Saving America's Children, to present an alternative model for responding to the plight of poor children and their families. The paradigm he presents focuses on what's best about people, and seeks to build partnerships with communities that capitalize on the life-giving potential of the people who live there. But he doesn't ignore the worst either: one of his chapters focuses solely on the complications of drug addiction, and he frequently addresses tangles of dysfunctional behaviors. By including the good, bad and ugly, Taylor is able to come up with a holistic model that offers a potential way out of the persistent poverty that is life for 1 in 5 children in America.

Taylor tells great stories, as any good Baptist preacher should, which fill and enliven the book. The Biblical story of the title -- Jesus calling Lazarus up from death -- is reinterpreted throughout. The real-life story of Taylor and his allies' work to close Junior Village, a institution that housed 900 of DC's poorest children in the 1960's, provides the hope of success and the reality of continued struggle in our own backyard. Marcus's story, and the stories of many other DC children and their families, help drive the book's urgency. Other stories of Taylor himself on Outward Bound adventures exemplify the challenges and the risks of new thinking and acting.

Perhaps as valuable as the new paradigm is Taylor's candor about mistakes made and his own human struggle to reject despair. The organization Taylor founded in 1966 and still leads, For Love of Children (FLOC), has tried many things to save the poor children of DC and has learned many lessons. FLOC's apartments, for families who need the housing to fend off homelessness and keep their children out of the foster care system, has had a change in management policies to ensure a balance between compassion for uniquely vulnerable tenants and tenant responsibility for rent and property. Some of FLOC's other work, such as policy advocacy, has faded, while new ground has been broken -- notably, in the outdoor education program and camp.

Taylor's experience of going where he is led to experiment, fail, succeed, learn, despair, and persist ultimately makes Roll Away the Stone an inspirational tale. For the millions of Americans involved with community outreach efforts, the book provides interesting possibilities for how to work in new ways with poor children and their families. And for all of us, it gives us something new to think about next time we give some spare change.

Rosie Runs Away

a sweet, wonderful book for any child
My 3 year old found this especially interesting when she was feeling a little jealous of her baby brother the way Rosie was of "Fat Mat". When Rosie tries to help her mother she causes her more problems so she decides to run away. In the end she realized that she is still loved and needed in her home and that she wants to be there, even with Fat Mat. This is a sweet little storybook, just right for child with a new brother or sister and the illustrations fit the story perfectly. Rosie and Fat Mat are precious! as is their stroybook home and garden. I highly recommend this book.

This is the most touching book I have ever read.
Run Away little girl is about a little girl who is born with Cerebral Palsy. It is told from the point of view of her mother. It records the first few years of her life from birth and ends as her condidtion is looking up. I guarentee after reading this book you will have a new outlook on supposedly crippling dissabilities. It is a shame this book is currently out of print.
