I'll fly away
A spirtual & inspirational man, who wrote over 3000 gospel songs, including "I'll fly away". I could not swear to it not knowing the man personally but doubt that he ever stole anything in his life, my grandfather knew him & the man he spoke of would not steal a song. Read the book ...

The perfect guide for all stages of a gay man's relationship
This is a MUST for every gay man's library, despite their religious background. It covers how to meet guys, what types to avoid, how couple dynamics work, when to end a bad relationship, and how to deal with the loss of a beau.

All of this is done with wit and humor that makes you laugh out loud on one level while identifying with it on another.

A Humourous Book Still Pertinent to our Time
This book, while written in 1971, still has lessons for our time--perhaps a depressing thought for us today, or a testament to Burton's writing and forward-thinking. She talks about basic issues of how to divide housework, how to deal with difficult issues of gender differences and divisions, and how to raise a family with positive values. This book is a good, quick read, and I recommend it highly.

Great book even if your not a designer
This book doesn't discuss the "how's" of design, but rather the "why's". A question I'm always asking. He inspires the designer to restore quality to life using our best ammunition, Design. My favorite chapter was on his fight for the plain old brown bag. Why should we be a walking advertisement everytime we carry a bag? (or wear a t-shirt?) He entreats designers to recognize the social power they have and to respect that power. A great book!

:: Guidelines to fulfillment ::
"Keeping your kids in touch with God" is a information filled book written by Robert Laurent for parents and anyone working with youth. The author discusses many of the reasons children turn away from the church, and suggests ways to prevent this. Some of the topics include, self-esteem, peer influence, the media, parental relationships, and lack of family harmony. Many of the topics have application guidlines which could be used in non-Christian homes, making it a book useful for all families. I love the way Laurent designed the book. Using questionnaires and other research, he goes inside what teenagers today are feeling to give readers a kid's perspective of the big picture. The big picture being, why kids turn from God. This book is a very practical one. Each chapter ends with some suggestions as to how we can build our children up and towards God. The book is easy to read, using very down to earth, day-to-day examples of family life. I would recommend this book to any person who will be in contact with children whether in a family, in ministry, or in any potential relationship building environment. It gives sound advice on how to walk along side your kids and guide them towards a fulfilling lifestyle.

Kicking Away the Ladder: Development Strategy in Historical Perspective (Anthem World Economics Series)

An iconoclastic and sophiscated work
According to Michael Lind's book review in Prospect (Jan 2002), this book is "the most important book about the world economy to be published in years." And the author received the 2003 Myrdal Award for this book, which is awarded annually to a great academic achievement in the field of development/institutional economics following the late Swedish economist's name Gunar Myrdal who was a Nobel Prize laureate.

Prof. Ha-Joon Chang of Cambridge argues in this book that developed countries used many measures for promoting their economy in their earlier days of development, which they are now blaming for making the economy in developing countries worse and that in the world unfair. But, the author reverses this logic. According to his arguments, such suggestions from developed countries are in fact making the economy in developing countries lagged behind and such a rule of game in the world economy now is rather unfair to them because developing countries even can be punished due to their using of the very same methods which developed ones used in the past.

As a critique of neo-liberal market fundamentalism preached by establishement economics and its institutions, this book is very iconoclastic because it gives readers sophisticated understanding of the real history of industrial development as well as pleasure of reading an academically original and creative work.

BOOK DESCRIPTION -- from the book's jacket
"I read with great enjoyment the delightful collection of vignettes which you have compiled. Your refreshing wit and candor provide a unique glimpse into the training and life of a physician. You have demonstrated the importance of the ability to laugh not only at our frustrations, but at ourselves as well.

Your thoughtful and entertaining book performs a great service to the medical community by removing the mystery which the laity commonly associates with the art and science of medicine. Your descriptions of the life of a caring doctor serve well to demonstrate the victories, the minor defeats, the embarrassments, and most importantly, the overall satisfaction we receive from the practice of our calling.

On a more personal note, I found that the accounts of your experiences mirrored many in my own life, although I never could have described them so eloquently. I especially appreciated the frequent mention of your wife's contributions to your practice since, as we both know, a physician's most loyal and knowledgeable partner is often his or her spouse.

Your vignettes provide your readers with an entertaining and enlightening way to "laugh away your tensions." This book should appeal to all readers from every walk of life."

-- Eugene P. Johnson, M.D., President, Illinois State Medical Society

"A bond of collegial fellowship has existed between physicians from the age of Aesculapius and Hippocrates to this time of antibiotics and electronic technology. It is an indefinable something that makes the medical profession so satisfying and rewarding.

"Laugh Away Your Tensions" is a sensitive presentation of the jovial twinkle in a mature physician's eye as he listens and cares for a fellow human being, recognizing and accepting the human limitations.

A physician is allowed an intimate view of his/her patient, stripped of all pomp and circumstance and lacking all resources save the dignity of the human being. Many people never mature to the point where they can observe the human race and condition in such a light.

Dr. Whittaker has seen mankind with all its faults, and the laughter is the gentle acceptance of our world with all of its pain, sorrow, and joy, and recognizing all its potential.

The reader must have an open mind and heart to fully sense and appreciate the depth and candor of Dr. Whittaker's writing.

This book not only makes one proud to be a member of the medical profession, but makes one proud to be a member of the human race."

-- Alvin L. Watne, M.D., Professor and Chairman, Dept. of Surgery, University of Illinois College of Medicine
