The Ones Who Got Away:Women Who Left Abusive Partners
This book is pretty much the "bible" of Domestic Violence Survivors. I want to personally thank Ginny Nicarthy, it was this very book that gave me the push I needed to take a stand and leave my abusive husband. This book opens the door to self-empowerment. It gives real true to life stories of the brave women who have endured such herendous abuses at the hands of the very men that claimed to love them. This book also kept me focused on what lie ahead, a long journey of self-discovery necessary to empower myself so that I would not be destined to attract the same kind of mate. I learned that as a strong independant woman, I am somebody! I can make a difference in this world and I can teach my daughter to value her thoughts and feelings, so that others will too.

This book gives great insights and help to women
I read this book and found that it gives great encouragement and insights into the problems that women in abusive relationships have. It gives women courage. You can also see that you are not necessarily doomed to repeat past failed relationships. I recommend it highly!

What a Useful Book!
As a busy business traveler, I've frequently found going on business trips to be very stressful because of all the planning involved with leaving my children behind. This clear, concise book gave me wonderful, non-patronizing instructions on just what to do when I leave my children at home. I imagine this book would be very helpful to military families right now.

A must for parents who travel!
What an easy read with good ideas. I enjoyed the style and even though our two children are five and seven years old, the parts about older children and teenagers should be helpful, too. I've already told a couple of friends about it. The military part was interesting, but there's plenty for non-military parents. I especially liked the stories in Chapter Ten and the checklists and the empty-nest chapter was amusing. I think I'll try one of Charlie Hudson's novels next. Thanks for a quick and practical book!

When Ramona's adventure begins, she is wisked away to a time in America's history when pirates ruled the seas and struck fear in the hearts of citizens. Putting Away Childish Things: The Virgin Birth, the Empty Tomb, and Other Fairy Tales You Dont't Need to Believe to Have a Living Faith

Wise and witty
In a well-researched and thoughtful way the author explores those aspects of Christian belief that are difficult to accept on face value (like the virgin birth, the tendency to blame the Jews and excuse the Romans for the crucifixion, very different Christmas stories, and miracle stories) and peels away layers of theological presentations and pious fantasies to give us a glimpse of original worship and spirituality. Her writing is provocative and at the same time it is funny. I laughed out loud as I read sections of the book. If you are open to questions about Christianity and the development of religious beliefs you might enjoy this book very much.

An exciting, challenging read.
If you are looking for an analysis of basic Christian beliefs that will most likely make you take a second look at all you were taught in church, than this is the book for you. The author is relentless in her deconstruction of so much of the Christian myth that has been misconstrued as history. She urges the reader to get beyond the literalization that has dominated Christian thought since the enlightenment and to see the Bible for what it is...a theology book. This is a highly readable and, dare I say, "fun" text to delve into and would make for great discussion in a study group. If you like the writings of liberal Episcopal theologian John Shelby Spong, you will enjoy this text immensely.

A River Away
Published in Paperback by Arcane Books (25 November, 2003)
Author: Marilyn Dungan
Amazon base price: $16.00
Average review score:

A River Away is an historical fiction that comes to life!
Dungan's concise and descriptive language breathes life into her main character, Valentine Dalton. I keenly felt his love and passionate dedication toward his country, his wife, Hannah, and their children. Although this novel is considered a work of fiction, the author's portrayal of this man and his life made me feel that I was given a "true and accurate" glimpse into the heart and soul of this historical soldier and hero. It also shows the research that the author must have done to so clearly illustrate the period of time in which this story took place. I have enjoyed reading all of Marilyn Dungan's novels (The Laney McVey Series) and this book has piqued my interest so much that I would love to ask Ms. Dungan if she is going to make this into an historical fiction series. I sure hope so and I can't wait for her next publication!

Great Book!
I really enjoyed A River Away and read it in less than a day. I was really intrigued by author Marilyn Dungan's writing ability. I would recommend the book to readers that enjoy American history and adventure laced with a tender love story.

Wonderful story!
This is a wonderful story, and the beginning of a wonderful series. Megan is a young woman whose family background has left her emotionally scarred and fiercely independent. When a friend offers her the use of his summer cabin in the Utah mountains, Megan unexpectedly encounters there the only man in her life who has shown her true affection--and who loves her still--but who unknowingly betrayed her trust ten years ago.

Doug is extrordinary! He shows great patience and love as he helps Megan overcome her fears. He longs to be a family with Megan and their nine-year-old son, Jason, but first must help Megan let go of the ghosts of her past so she can learn to love and be loved.

I like the way Jennie Hansen set up the next story in this wonderful series by referring at the end to A.J.'s move to Alaska to work on a documentary film--and then at Megan's birthday party Doug's telling Megan that A.J. was not able to attend because he had promised to drive a friend's truck from Alaska to Utah for him, and it would take a couple of weeks. Throughout the book, I felt a bit sorry for A.J., since it was obvious he wanted Megan. Thank you, Jennie, for telling us A.J.'s story in this wonderful series. (Read them in order: Run Away Home, Journey Home, Coming Home)

A keeper!
Run Away Home will remain one of my all-time favorite books. The plot and characters are fanastic yet believable, and the reader becomes feels they are a part of the story as much as any of the characters. I read this in one sitting, forgetting about everything else. It is such an intriguing story, it can be read and re-read and not "get old." It deserves and easy 5 stars.

Sail Away!

Practical Advice for cruising
Boats are complex, cruising is fun, Paul & Sheryl show how everyone can get past the complexities and into the fun of it. I found this book valuable because it addresses how to make things simple. A cruising sailboat has many confusing systems that seem too difficult to understand. This book is like having a helpful friend there lending encouragment. This may not be the most complete and comprehensive of guides but it traveled with us on a five year voyage. Shelf space it tight on a boat and there was space for this book.

Good advice from people living the sailing life
Paul and Sheryl Shard built their own boat and sailed it to the Bahamas. That was the original plan, and then they kept on going! They sailed to Europe and back to Toronto via Brazil, and the Caribbean.

They have been cruising for 10 years now, and are living the dream of many. Rather than a week here and there, or even a year sabbatical, they manage to cruise about six months a year, writing, and filming for their TV show.

This book has been updated and reflects the kind of knowledge that is only gained but doing again and again. They have the right attitude and obviously have found something that works. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to turn their dreaming into reality.

Searching for Charmian : the daughter Charmian Clift gave away discovers the mother she never knew

Very good indeed
This book is a lovely journey of discovery - a mature woman's search to find her place in the world through learning about the mother she never knew. Charmian Clift was a gifted writer, and we learn much about her, but we also connect at a very 'here and now' level with her unknown daughter.

I plan to re-read this when I have some time.

Riveting and moving
Suzanne Chick's book is wonderful on several levels. It is an essential companion to the writings of Charmian Clift, but perhaps more importantly, it is the story of discovery. She allows us to accompany her on the search for the real Charmian Clift, with all the intellectual and emotional turns on the way. There are many books about the search for a birth mother but few people find that their natural parent was a wellknown writer with a legacy of work, both fiction and non-fiction, as well as having been interviewed. Extremely well written.

A Londoner in Texas
My Husband and I visited Houston, San Antonio & Austin, we only had a couple of weeks in which to fit in as much as we could. This book was a brilliant way to get the most from a short time. It helped us to enjoy our visit to the full. We hope to visit more of the USA and shall certainly use this type of book again.

A fun way to plan a one day or weekend vacation!
I really enjoyed using Day Trips from San Antonio and Austin to plan several recent weekend excursions. I found the book very helpful and used it to plan a trip to Corpus Christi and another to the Hill Country. Even though I have lived in this area for over 20 years, I found many hidden treasures thanks to this guide!

An Enthralling Collection
I'm very interested in the powerful tapestry of the US homefront during WWII. This book provides a wide variety of first hand accounts of what was happening and more importantly how people felt about these events. The power comes from the fact that the words were written at the time rather than as later rememberances tainted by subsequent experiences. The only selectivity is in the letters people chose to save. But I think the authors have done a good job in trying to mitigate this natural bias by drawing from a wide variety of sources.

AWESOME - EMOTIONAL - REVEALING - INFORMATIONAL - THE BEST
This book of letters is so revealing of that period in time. It lays the emotions of the women left behind during war time right out in the open for all to feel and experience. This book has become a part of my life. I work at a college and when we have a program that needs a reading done I am always called on to read from "my" book of WWII letters from home. I feel like these letters are my children and each one is crying out to be heard and I really do hate to have to pick only a couple to read. This book is that good. I feel that this book should be read by everybody especially young people. I get very good response after my readings and some very emotional responses as well. This is a truly wonderful book and I recommend it to everyone.
