Great companion to the CWIM

This is a great book offering guidelines to publishers and agents and is an excellent companion to the CWIM. If you write kidlit and want to be published, get an agent or find out the latest guidelines for magazine and book publishers, this book often has more in its listings than the CWIM. It's great to confirm editor's names and other pertinent info. too. This is the first time I've ordered this book and I'm glad I did. In some ways, I like it even better than the CWIM (Children's writers/illustrators markets)

Writers rebel against the publishing establishment

Expatriate authors on the Costa Blanca set up the Left Bank website to publish books on the Internet and print-on-demand. To Bertie's dismay, Jade refuses an offer of £20,000 for her historical saga. The insulted publisher ceases negotiation with another memeber of the Left Bank and seeks revenge.

Hannah moves to Barcelona and meets Crispin, a well-known but disenchanted fashion designer. They are good friends but feel obliged to reveal their pasts to each other. Hannah is the mistress of a man she cannot marry and Crispin has a genetic disability.

Damien works for an expatriate author in Majorca. Lorna discovers that a diving accident has brought his research at the Sorbonne to a halt. Her niece, Belinda, because he is gay, accuses Damien of knowing nothing about straight love - if he is to write a stunning blockbuster, he must have sex with a woman. He feels angry and insulted.

Through the Left Bank website, the Majorca writers present eight publishers with a Magna Carta of the grievances of ignored authors - the friendship of these writers is compelling.

This is a daring book that bites the hand that feeds.

I love this book. It is the bible for upcoming or established writers. The articles from successful writers from various genres are excellent. I've just started to take my writing seriously and I found this book to be extremely helpful and it will prevent many common mistakes that writers make.

Accidental reference material

Yester-Knights is a memoir inspired by one man's desire to record his varied life experiences for his descendants. It is a very honest account of Myles Knight's memories first as a young man in rural South Carolina, then as a paratrooper in the U.S. Army and finally as an agent for U.S. Customs during the 1970's and 1980's.

Although Knight muses on everything from government bureaucracy to fond memories of his two sons, readers will likely find that the tales serve as pleasant backdrop to a more practical purpose. Knight may not have noticed, or maybe he is too humble to point it out, but the pages of Yester-Knights are littered with valuable references, contact names and nuggets of primary evidentiary experiences that rival the most researched thesis paper. He made a career enforcing anti-drug laws and he has almost by accident become an authority on the subject. At the same time, he addresses competition shooting, martial arts, the Sky Marshals and his boyhood home town with the same detailed perspective. There is even mention of a stint on security detail for the family of Al Gore in which he ponders the amount of pizza the clan ordered.

Knight intones a simple, strait-forward voice, probably the same voice his career has forced him to adopt. It employs none of the biased literary devices so common in memoirs, but instead puts the reader point-blank in front of Knight's life as though it is the voice-over for a silent movie. Certainly, the focus of the book is heavy on the heart-warming family and childhood memories, for that is it's stated objective; and while there is not a moral, there is still plenty for a reader to learn.

Excellent book about how to REALLY find a REAL job in the REAL world. Especially helpful in this economy. Even though it's geared toward college grads, it's extremely helpful advice for everyone of all ages. I have my own copy and now am ordering as gifts for lots of other people I know.
