"Eric Sterling: Secret Agent" Smugglers on Grizzly Mountain, by Ernest Herndon, is a charming book for children aged 8-12. It is about three pre-teen special agents for Wildlife Special Investigations (WSI), who are assigned a case involving mushroom smugglers. The three children, Eric C., Erik K., and Erik's sister Sharon, are sent off to Alaska where they meet with Martin Bull who shows them what they are to do. After a brief overview of their case, the three are sent to climb Bear Ridge Mountain armed with camping supplies, a telescope, and bear mace. As soon as they reached the summit, the three detectives spotted the mushroom smugglers and radioed down to Mr. Bull. Mr. Bull told Eric to come back down the mountain first thing the next morning. As soon as Eric woke up, he packed up his supplies and headed down the mountain. After his long hike down the mountain, poor, tired Eric was greeted by an unfamiliar man who told him that there was an emergency and that Mr. Bull had to head home. However, Eric smelled something fishy, he knew something was not right. But I won't tell you what it is, you will have to read this book for yourself to know what the exciting ending is to this great book of outdoor expeditions.

Great overview book on hot subject

I eagerly waited this book, and was not dissappointed. This book covers in 15 chapters one of the hottest topics in computer advancements - intellegent agents and their important role in future comm based systems. The first two chapters are an introduction to the subject, begining with the low level details, so each can find his/her way and feel right at home. The rest 13 chapters introduce different problems by various groups of authors and researchers and their approach to the presented problem. This book is an eye opener and provocator. I like the diversity and approch, as well as always having the pleasure of reading such excellent work. This is not a technical book, and as such is a great starting point to the exciting area of intelligent agents. If you are starting your way, or would like to have a good look around this is definately the book for you. If you want a more technical book, the "Multiagent Systems : A Modern Approach to Distributed Artificial Intelligence" by Gerhard Weiss is a better resource. But All in all, I love this book!

The Spivey Assignment is proof that Truth is more exciting than fiction. Larry Spivey went from one dangerous situation to another with a mission.....Catch the bad guys. He proved to have a natural talent for catching drug smugglers. His record speaks for itself, no narcotics officer has ever beaten his record for arrests of major drug smugglers. This book will keep you up late!

Visionary look at artificial intelligence

Review Date: 2006-10-05
Sport Death was written 20 years ago, but it's as fresh and insightful as if it were hot off the press.

The title refers to a curious term used both by pilots and high-level computer hackers in reference to pushing things as far as you can - and what happens when you go over the edge.

In this story, the plot line involves the now-defunct Soviet Union, but the political intrigue and corrupting power of... power still ring ture.

The true genius of this story, however, is the development of Chuck the metasynthesizer, the computer brain inside the Raven aerospace plane, and the friendship and other feelings that grow between "him" and the Cathy woman test pilot who teaches him how to fly, think and love.

This exploration of machine versus human consciousness and thinking ability remains unparalleled in literature and goes beyond the work done in this area by Heinlein, Clarke, and even Asimov. As Chuck says to Cathy once when she wonders "whether soul can exist inside an artificial intelligence machine:" "What exactly is artificial about my intelligence?"

If you like the idea of intelligent systems evolving into beings capable of human and extra-human thinking and perception - and all the philosophical/religious ramifications thereof, Sport Death will make you laugh, learn and think.

This book is wonderful. The characters are very well thought out and the development is great. The battle at the end would keep a skinny man sweating naked outside in alaska during winter. yes its that good. But if you didnt read the 11 books that came before it, you will miss out on some of the books finer points. its a shame these books never caught on here in the states. They'd blow harry potter out of the water.

Get Your Spy Kid Fix!
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2004-06-22
My kids (7 and 4) absolutely love the Spy Kids movies. We watch them over and over. The kids frequently ask me when the next movie is coming out, and are quite dismayed when I can't promise them that there will be a "Spy Kids 20". I was thus quite excited to discover that there are Spy Kids books! This is the only one we've read so far-- chapter by chapter over a period of a week or so. It's a little advanced for my kids' age group-- my 7-year-old would frequently have to stop me to ask what a word means, and my 4-year-old would get pretty wiggly (there are no pictures), but they were both always anxious for the next installment. The story is classic Spy Kid action and humor. We got a good Spy Kid fix and a vocabulary booster all in one. My only problem with it was trying to come up with a Spanish accent for their dad's speaking parts... Practice makes perfect though, so we'll definitly be trying the next book too!
