As the leading civilian authority on the U.S. Secret Service, I was greatly suprised and impressed with this "kids" book about the Secret Service. Some very good information about the modern Secret Service is captured in good detail. In addition, there are several nice photographs included. Buy it!

Advanced treatment of advanced topics
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2002-06-02
This three section collection of papers is for advanced architects who are exploring contemporary security strategies. The collection is divided into foundation material, concepts and implementation. The book has a fourth section, but it's an appendix that lists the author bios.

The papers in this book are based on presentations given at two ECOOP'98 workshops: the Workshop on Distributed Object Security and the Workshop on Mobility: Secure Internet Mobile Computation. Unlike many books that are based on workshops and lecture notes, this one is more practical than academic. I like the fact that XML and Java are covered, and found the papers that deal with access controls filled with useful information. The paper by Blaze, Feigenbaum, Ioannidis, and Keromytis on the role of trust management in distributed systems, and Roth's paper on mutual protection of cooperating agents gave information that me and my team used to solve a design problem.

Like most collections of computer science lecture notes the writing is vastly different from more popular books, but the information is there if you're willing to dig through dry writing. Also, this book is not for programmers who either don't have a computer science degree or are not familiar with computer science and software engineering.

Pulp Fiction Rises Again ?
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-07-15
Published in 1986, this book wouldn't appear out of place in 1936. An even 20 years later the book is still a good read ! It has the feel of a Spider pulp (not the PB reprint, though), with a few chapters of air battles like G-8. It is well-written and moves along at a quick pace. It is recommended for anyone who enjoys the hero pulps.

A Trip Down Memory Lane

I grew up in Honolulu during the early sixties and Tom's book brings back so many memories. The British Invasion shows at the HIC, Led Zepplin at the old Civic, the crater concerts, the Golden Hibiscus Contest, the Poi Boys, each is a gem. My father worked for the competition at KORL and KULA. What a hoot ! Thanks Tom for all the great entertainment over the years. This book is a must buy for all music fans in the Aloha "state of mind.

Classic text on this topic, a bit old, but essential reading
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-08
Excellent reference book. Essential reading for any chemist or student working in the the field of bonding polymers to glass. Assumes degree level chemistry, so not so accessible to engineers hoping to get background on sizing. Does not discuss micromechanics nor fiber/matrix interphase in mechanical terms. Main focus is bonding glass fibers to thermosetting resins, but also looks at thermoplastics, elastomers (not much detail) and Chapter 8 briefly covers various non composite applications such as water repellent surface treatments, silica packings of GLC (chromatography), etc. etc. Book shows it age in places, but well worth having on your bookshelf.
