J.P. Lintz, Sr. takes the reader on a journey filled with mystery, intrigue, action, romance and food. (Yes, food). Anyone who has ever dreamed about leading a secret life of international intrigue and adventure will love living vicariously through this dynamic duo, JJ and Elena, as they drive, fly and eat their way back and forth between Mexico and the United States. Equally satisfying is the food for thought that is served up through the real-life contemporary socio-political issues underlying the page-turning action . I'm anxiously awaiting a sequel in which JJ and Elena might taste adventure in faraway exotic lands...

Very revealing.

This book covers mainly the fifties and sixties of last century, when the author was an important CIA agent in Indonesia, the Philippines and Central and South America.
It clearly shows how the CIA (the author) tried to influence directly the political situation in those countries. It supported financially the political party, that it thought would best represent the anti-communist and /or business interests of the US / transnational companies, and it tried to intervene in the composition of govenments.
Contrary to other sources, the author denies vehemently that the CIA was behind or committed assassinations.

The author explains distinctly the real seasons behind the Vietnam War or the Bay of Pigs disaster and reveals some famous names as CIA creatures: Nasser (Egypt) and Frei (Chile).
We meet some very well known people at the beginning of their (in)famous career: Ferdinand Marcos, Sukarno, Lee Kuan Yew, Howard Hunt, Han Suyin.

At the end, disillusioned, Joseph Smith turns his back on the Agency; firstly, for personal reasons (people got promotion for their incompetence), and secondly, because of the Vietnam disaster, Watergate, the bureaucratisation of the CIA (at one point drifting to a Gestapo status) and its spying on US citizens (the CHAOS program).

This work contains also some comic scenes of how the CIA tried to lure KGB agents in their nets.
Fundamentally, it confirms the statement of an old Englishman in Malay:'There are struggles for money, for power, for lust, for greed, because of just plain meanness. But there is no such thing as the ideological struggle...'.

A must read in order to understand the ploys of a secret agency.

I really liked this book because it takes a chapter or two toget into it but after it gets into it you star with it. This book was kinda like the movie the matrix because it has some action in it and it takes about half of the book or more to understand it. This book is great because it will boggle the most advanced mind.

the face of XX century
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2001-02-03
This very short century, that begins in 1918 and ends with of Berlin's wall, has its most formidable days pictured in this "saga" about the struggle between totalitarian and democratic states. Still very much mistaken about the former URSS and "socialist paradise" as the tactical alliance imposed at the time of WW2, the facts depicted in these books bring back times that should not be forgotten. The plot is good, although it takes, I believe, some kind of previous knowledge about those days to be followed. All in all, it is perhaps the best and more comprehensive novel, or sequence of novels, about an era that makes the main part of the last century, and will certainly be an important part of future appreciation of our time.

My 6 Year Old Young Reader Loves Olivia!
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2005-09-06
I was in a book store looking for books that would be interesting and appropriate for my 6 year old daughter when I stumbled upon Olivia Sharp. I flipped through the pages and when I brought it home, my daughter loved it.

Olivia Sharp is a detective, and in the "Princess of the Fillmore Street School" she must deal with how to appropriately approach a girl who wants everyone to be perfect. While the story does teach some valuable lessons, they are not preached as to drown out the story. The story is interesting, and with the topic of "princesses" is sure to capture the attention and imagination of young female readers.

The story is an entertaining read, with 14 short chapters covering 73 pages. Some pages have a lot of words, some less, and there are generally pictures on each page. Olivia has to solve difficult people problems that stem from her cases. In the book, the focus is more on helping people. There is nothing obnoxious or crude. Just a quality, down to earth good story.

This book is perfect for a young reader who is venturing away from children's books. There are some challenging words, which is good. My daughter often comes up to me and asks me to tell her what a word is.

We will be getting more from the Olivia Sharp series!

The leading civilian Secret Service authority approves
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.

As the leading civilian authority on the U.S. Secret Service, I was most impressed with this fine book by Dennis (no relation to Tim) McCarthy (with some help from his co-author, Philip W. Smith). It reads very well, it's funny, informative, and even has a nice photo section, to boot. The Secret Service were NOT pleased with this book...further reason to get it asap! ;-) Seriously, although, in hindsight, although he received a medal, Dennis McCarthy's role that fateful day on 3/30/81 was relatively minor, especially in comparison to the bravery (and bloodshed) of Jerry Parr, Tim McCarthy, Drew Unrue, and Ray Shaddick, among others. In fact, on the video "Inside The Secret Service," an actor portraying a threat to the President is shown reading a copy of this book (!) and, if that weren't enough, a still photo of the four agents decorated for valor for their heroics---Parr, Shaddick, McCarthy, and TIM McCarthy---is depicted with DENNIS McCarthy cropped out and not even mentioned! All that aside, a fine book. Get it!!!
