Documenting a media revolution
BY KELLY ARTHUR GARRETT/THE HERALD MEXICO
El Universal
Lunes 14 de agosto de 2006
Miami Herald, página 1

The Mexican news media is enjoying its moment in the sun. That moment started with the first stirrings of these endless 2006 elections, and it's still in full flower. Even if you take your Mexico news in English, what you read and watch - what you know - is influenced by an energized national press that has risen to this particular occasion (that is, the snarled election) with massive, multi-perspective coverage of a watershed event in this country's history.

It wasn't always thus, as Sallie Hughes reminds us in her thorough, insightful and very timely study of Mexican journalism's transition from lapdog to watchdog titled "Newsrooms in Conflict: Journalism and the Democratization of Mexico."

fascinating, a treasure trove of information

Review Date: 2008-07-04
Any reader interested in ghosts, witches, vampires, or any aspect of the supernatural in the Graeco-Roman world, will find a highly readable introduction to the subject in Night's Black Agents. Daniel Ogden, a well-known authority on magic in that era, has produced a well-paced account of things that went bump in the night. The book, a survey written for a general audience, is packed with fascinating detail and contains a thorough set of end-notes for those who want to pursue particulars in the works of the original authors. A comprehensive bibliography and index add to the value of this work.

A well-chosen set of illustrations shows how the ancients imagined the characters of their stories, inhabitants of that region of shadows where the world of the living touches the world of the dead. Not only did the protagonists of these tales consult hideous witches and raise ghosts, on occasion they engaged in sex with partners returned from beyond the veil.

The banquet and ghost story, the Roman equivalent of dinner and a movie, can now be revisited and relished. All the reader need supply is the food.

I read this book, and loaned it out... and it never came back. I bought it again, loaned it out... and it didn't come back either. Very fun, very entertaining, and far far better than the movie.

Early coverage of the field
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-30
This was a timely collection of twelve research articles on nucleoside / nucleotide analogues as antiviral agents by 1989. From these early studies the field has experienced significant growth over the years and offered some drug approvals.

Majority of the book covers nucleoside analogues although in many cases chemical or enzymatic phosphorylation is also described. It is believed these nucleoside "prodrugs" need to be phosphorylated for many protein / enzyme recognition.

More than half of the book is concerned about acyclic nucleosides analogues.

Also covered are pyrophosphate analogues and oligonucleotide analogues as chemotherapeutic agents.

Timely as it was in 1989, it is a book you should not miss if you work in the field of nucleosides / nucleotides / oligonucleotides / nucleic acids.

On The Rhizome

You may be like I once was, wanting to read some Deleuze & Guattari, and for cheaper than the price of Anti-Oedipus or A Thousand Plateaus. Then you happen to notice that On The Line is both 1) out of print & 2) for the cheap.

Take note though that On The Line consists of two portions that are reprinted elsewhere. The first, Rhizome, is the introductory chapter in A Thousand Plateaus. The version appearing in ATP is a bit of a re-working of it, and I find the translation preferable. The same goes with the translation of the second article in On The Line, Politics. Politics is printed as 'Many Politics' in the Claire Parnet & Gilles Deleuze book, Dialogues.

Oh, and if you're thinking of purchasing Nomadology: The War Machine, that's in ATP, too.

Dynamic expose a must read

Review Date: 1997-06-10
It's rare that a book comes along so so thoroughly captures the greed, perversity and intensity of a glamor life, the way it really is. Nikki Finke bares all in the Tinseltown expose that's sure to have studio execs running for cover. While it's true, I've only read the title, this clearly is destined to be one of the all time great books. Watch Tom Cruise, Eric Baldwin and Travolta bidding for teh righst to this one
