Hello:

We are Sophia Kanaris and Fotine Sarbanis and we are passing the word.

"The Man With The Black Worrybeads gives the reader a vivid picture of a proud (Greek) people, struggling to retain their identity under appalling conditions." The New York Times

"It is a real joy to come across such a brilliantly presented novel amid today's torment of fiction. It is a fine example of intriguing drama at its very best." The Los Angels Times

"This is a really neat adventure yarn, set in World War II occupied Greece, aimed straight at the Hammond Innes-Alistair MacLean market. It hits right on target. Publishers Weekly

"A dramatic story of love, life and death. There must be a dozen better-known writers who have never in their lives done anything nearly as good" Fort Worth Press

THE MAN WITH THE BLACK WORRYBEADS by George N. Rumanes is one of the best books ever written about Greece and its people, a book that had to be written.

We are passing the word because the book reveals a part of Greek history that was never told before and we are proud of it.

I was fortunate enough to hear about Laura's book before I started in the notary business. The advice the author shares is honest, unbiased and valuable. This is no "get-rich-quick campaign". She provides step-by-step instructions on how to get listed in important directories, prepare press releases and more. What's best is that she responds to your email if you have a question about her book. I may have to buy another copy, I've marked up my first copy with underlining, arrows and other important notations. If you are serious about the notary business you will read this book over-and-over again because each time you do, you'll find some new information that you overlooked previously. Looking forward to her writing Part II of this excellent resource material.

I've been a notary for years and this book gave me lots of solid, useful, low-cost new ideas I could implement right away. It is direct and to the point: no fluff. The information can't be found anywhere else - I've looked. It's an excellent resource I know I will refer to many times in the future. Very helpful. Excellent resource.

Exciting true life adventure

Review Date: 2003-05-12
This excellent work, written 70 years ago, is a true story that reads like a novel. It is the account of the author's life in Russia both before and after its two revolutions. As the British Consul in Moscow, the author was acquainted with all of the main historical characters in Russia's great tragedy, from Tsarist ministers, to the men behind both the first and second revolts. He paints a grim picture of the life there after Lenin took power, but he doesn't spare either himself or others when he speaks of shortcomings in polcy. His personal life also comes under scrutiny, and he is honest about his failings. There is fear when he is arrewted by the Cheka, but it all comes out well in the end. One wonders how much more detail there would have been in this book if the author had waited to write it after World War II, or even a bit later. It is a thriller that is true, and well worth reading for its historical insights into the Russia of 1914-1918!

Insightful & Engrossing Look at Russia at Time of Revolution

When it was first published in 1932, "Memoirs of a British Agent" achieved bestseller status both in the United States and in Great Britain. R.H. Lockhart's account of the years he spent representing Britain's Foreign Office in Russia is still immensely entertaining and informative today. Lest the book's title mislead you, Lockhart was not an espionage agent; he was a diplomat. He was Britain's Vice-Consul in Moscow, then Acting Consul-General, then official "unofficial" representative to the new Bolshevik regime in Russia, between the years 1912 and 1918. In his memoirs, Bruce Lockhart describes his attempts at rubber farming as a young man in Malaysia and the circumstances that led to his seeking a career in the Foreign Office. Perhaps because he was a talented linguist, or just because he had gained the favor of his superiors in the Foreign Office, Lockhart was given the post of British Vice-Consul in Moscow shortly after joining the Service. In these memoirs, Lockhart gives us his insights into Russian culture and politics during the last years of Tzarist rule, the circumstances of Russia's participation in World War I, and Russia's descent into Bolshevism. Lockhart came to love the Russian people and consider Moscow his home while he witnessed the last Tzar unwittingly ensure his own downfall and the succeeding Provisional Government inevitably fail. Lockhart gives an honest account of the errors in British and Allied policies during these precarious years in Russia. We get a close-up view of the eternal rift between diplomatic knowledge and political imperative. And we witness history repeating itself when foreign policies are adopted for political, not logical, reasons, and so inevitably fail. "Memoirs of a British Agent" is a supremely literate and insightful first-hand account of the fascinating and turbulent time in Russia that gave birth to the Soviet Union through the eyes of a foreigner who knew many prominent members of both the Tzarist and Bolshevik regimes personally. Lockhart manages to convey great sympathy for Russians of various ideologies while at the same time speaking bluntly of their shortcomings. Rarely has a book that is so informative been so entertaining. "Memoirs of a British Agent" is a real page-turner. If Bruce Lockhart were still living, I would want to thank him personally for such an enjoyable memoir. Highly recommended.

An Insider's View of the U.S.S.R During the Revolution

This book was first published in 1932, fifteen years after the Bolsheviks came to power in Russia. It covers, not only the authors, personal experiences in Russia at that time but his earlier times in Malaya on a rubber plantation. The Malaya portion could have easily been ommited since Lockhart wrote a later account of these years in a book published in 1936. What makes this book worth reading is the Author's description of the chaos which abounded in the Soviet Union before and after Lenin seized power. As an official of the British Foreign Office assigned to their offices in St Petersburg and Moscow he gives a first hand account of the total destruction of old views held by most Soviets and the introduction of Marxist values. His description of the absolute incompetance which was rife in the British Foreign Office at that time and their refusal to accept the consequences of the Revolution is reminiscent of Jimmy Carter and the American Governments refusal to take Khommeini seriously in Iran sixty years later. While this book may be dated in some ways it is still worth reading and provides a reminder that we continue to ignore History' teachings.

This book presents an excellent collection of papers describing various forms of mobility. It would be useful for a wide variety of technical professionals. This would also be an invaluable resource for students and researchers who plan to work in this increasingly important area. The unique feature of this book is the width of its coverage. It covers all the important papers I can think of.

Three features make this book competitive

1) The three areas covered - although they have similar problems with similar solutions - are rarely presented together. 2) The editors have selected a nice cross-section of papers from the three areas, and 3) The editors make some key points about and draw some key parallels between the three areas in the introductions and summaries.

An outstanding collection!

This book is an excellent collection of research papers on mobility, and it serves as a good introduction on the topic as well as a reference for new work. It stands out for three reasons: (1) Its breadth - it covers all important aspects of mobility in a single volume. (2) Its depth - it pulls together papers from many different sources, including major conferences, but also hard-to-find, yet ground-breaking papers. (3) Its commentary - both by the authors and by the individual researchers (in the form of afterwords).

Superb book on OSS spies inside Nazi Germany
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2003-05-27
This is a superb book on a little-told aspect of World War II espionage -- the infiltration of OSS spies into Nazi Germany, and their tales of survival (or capture) while trying to collect intelligence, and send it to the Allies, from inside one of the most repressive police states during wartime. This book is FULL of fascinating tales and insights, providing enough detail to be rich, but not enough to be stilted. The book reads like a good spy novel, except fiction is bounded by realm of the possible, and these are real people.
This book goes well beyond "this happened, and then that happened." The author explains the relevant history and structure of Nazi Germany, and examines the political and psychological pressures on the various countries, spy organizations, and on the agents themselves. Worker activists and communists were helpful to the Allies as spies during the war, but dumped soon afterward.
One tale is of "Cicero," the Albanian valet to the British ambassador to Ankara, who stole volumes of critical information from the ambassador's safe and sold it to the Germans, including the "Overlord" code name of the Normandy invasion. Even after being warned, the British allowed Cicero to stay in his position for months. Yet another twist happens as conflicts and jealousies within German intelligence led the Germans to discount the actual intelligence Cicero provided. And as the final twist, the £300,000 paid by the Germans to Cicero was all counterfeit money.
One of the most fascinating stories is how the Germans came to build their "last stand" National Redoubt in Austria. It started as a wholly mistaken OSS intelligence rumor -- the Germans had no such plan. But when the Germans intercepted the American radio report of such "German plans," the National Redoubt idea was sent to Hitler and implemented. A lot of our scarce espionage capabilities were misdirected to examining enemy plans in the "National Redoubt" area during the war. American troops at the end of the European war left Berlin to the Russians, and turned to Austria to vanquish the very same almost-empty "National Redoubt" chimera we'd created.
One helpful insight of the book was on the issue of whether the majority of ordinary Germans knew the purpose of the concentration camps. One capable spy, doing his best to make observations, with an anti-Nazi bias (both characteristics unlike most Germans), reported that the only information most Germans had of the purpose of the concentration camps came from what they may have heard from American propaganda, which they dismissed, because Allied anti-German propaganda in World War I had been so exaggerated. The majority of Germans, if they knew of the camps, assumed they were places of confinement and not extermination. This did not apply, of course, to the minority of Germans involved with the camps, and perhaps those living near the camps.
The author goes into the psychology of what makes a good spy, in a very paranoid "papers, please" regime, who is always pushing the envelope, always at the the risk of capture and torture and perhaps execution, but yet must survive in order to pass his/her information back to the Allies. What was the right type of man or woman to send into Nazi Germany with an important and delicate mission? (One description: "The ideal candidate was honest and devious, inconspicuous and audacious, quick and prudent, zealous and cool.") Should the OSS recruit ordinary captured German soldiers? Was it ethical to make promises to potential spies which couldn't be kept? How could the OSS tell who was telling the truth, and who had contrary motives -- or determine who had the character to perform well in extreme circumstances?
I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in politics, history, or espionage.

Since Wesley wrote in a different era, his style requires some adjustment but once one gets past that there is a lot of edifying content in this book. The key point of this book is the issue of "perfection." He sees it as living what Jesus said was the greatest commandment and its accompanying commandment, i.e., to love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your mind, all your strength, and to love your neighbor as you love yourself. Wesley's life demonstrates that he reached the goal. He traveled extensively, read widely, wrote inspiringly, and influenced many people to believe in Jesus as their Savior. Thank God for his legacy in words and deeds. He truly practiced and preached.

A true Christian classic

Wesley's brief treatise on the important yet overlooked Christian doctrine of perfection is a "must read" for all Christians interested in growing in Christ. The fact that this book is not mandatory reading in every seminary and Bible school is a travesty, making a mockery contemporary Christian education. This book is excellent for anyone serious about their spiritual journey.

Christian Perfection and John Wesley

Review Date: 2000-05-17
John Wesley (1703-1791) firmly believed that God continued to work in the life of the believer subsequent to justification. In A Plain Account of Christian Perfection, Wesley provides an account of the development of his understanding of the doctrine of Christian Perfection. This short work contains a lucid explanation of the doctrine with special attention not only to the Biblical promises and commands that are the basis of the doctrine but also the practical way that "perfect love" works in the life of the believer. While this work was certainly intended to instruct those who were seeking "perfect love," it also attempts to answer those who would deny the doctrine.

The essence of Christian Perfection, for Wesley, was clearly defined by Christ when an expert in the law asked him, "Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?" He said to him, "`You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: `You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets." (Matthew 23.36-40 NRSV)

Here one sees that, for Wesley, the main point of Christian Perfection is "perfect love." "Perfect love" thus defines our relationship to God and others.

This book is essential for those in the Wesleyan tradition and a worthwhile read for those from other Christian perspectives that wish to understand what Wesley thinks Christian Perfection is and is not.

Thought-leadership on Personalization

Review Date: 2004-03-25
Today's digital technologies enable and empower organizations to collect, analyse and store vast amount of customer information. The ability to connect islands of customer information has led to better customer profiling and better marketing strategies.

Various personalization technologies and electronic agents, to some extent, assist customers to navigate the ocean of market information. With our bounded capability to process huge amount of information and to gather all the necessary information for decision-making at any one time, such technological advances are welcome. However, such personalization technologies may intrude and invade privacy. Such are the core themes when it comes discussing about personalization. Such are the challenges of personalization technologies, faced by corporations, governments and individuals.

In "The Power of One", Nirmal Pal and Arvind Rangaswamy has succinctly captured the essence of the current thoughts on personalization and successfully steered through the complex mosaic of the subject to deliver penetrating insights. Pal and Rangaswamy assembled a superb collection of thoughts and ideas together with researched materials on personalization.

Personalization is one of the core building blocks of the Real-time Organization - the ability to sense-and-respond and adapt in the emerging global, digital economy. As noted by Pal and Rangaswamy, "if a firm is fully personalized, it "rents" out to customer just the right set of its assets for just the right amount to serve their individual needs." It provides the basis for enterprise-wide integration. Successful implementation of personalization technologies enables organizations to redefine the meaning of customer-centric.

Overall, this book provides thought-leadership on personalization and is a must-read for business executives. Those who are assessing the impact of personalization and those who are planning to implement the initiative within their organizations can learn about strategic issues (Chapter 1 to Chapter 5) and the nuts-and-bolts of personalization (Chapter 6 to Chapter 11).

Researchers on the subject will value the diversity of personalisation-related issues being addressed in the book. Consumers, like you and me, can gain a lot from the in-depth discussions on privacy found in the book. Readers will find this book easy to read and grasp, as all the contributors have eloquently narrated complex issues into coherent perspectives.

Pal and Rangaswamy customized this book to address personalization and thumbs up to them. It's timely, as personalization technologies may well be the killer-app for the next generation e-business.

Having May 2004 finalised my Graduate Diploma in E-business with a thesis on Online Personalization, I'm happy to say that this book was one of my key sources.

There are very few well-founded books on personalization. This one includes a number of interesting articles on very different angles on personalization (business, technical, privacy, etc.). The first part of the book is on the more strategic issues and the second part on the more operational issues.

STRATEGIC ISSUES
One of the lead chapters is on "How to evaluate personalization initiatives". The book recommends two dimensions: External Customer Acceptance and Internal Business Value

Two sub-dimensions control External Customer Acceptance:
- The perceived value for customer; i.e. how well is the customer need fulfilled and does it happen timely for the customer.
- Ease of data collection; i.e. how much can be based on the knowledge the business already has - and how much must the customer type manually.

Two sub-dimensions control Internal Business Value:
- Customer's Share of Wallet, i.e. the business' ability to sell more of the same products and/or different products to the customer
- Ease of implementation, i.e. the classic trade-off of production flexibility and production efficiency. How easy is it to customize the offering to the customer and what are the marginal costs in doing this compare to the marginal revenue.

Another interesting chapter is on the evolution of website's personalization. We often talk about personalization as either or. It's too simple. There's a whole spectrum of tools to make a website continually more personalized. The degrees of personalization are from static sites over dynamic sites to global personalized sites.

The book uses the definition from personalization.org:
Personalization is the use of technology and customer information to tailor electronic commerce interactions between a business and each individual customer. Using information either previously obtained or provided in real-time about the customer, the exchange between the parties is altered to fit that customer's stated needs as well as needs perceived by the business based on the available customer information. The purpose of this information technology combined with marketing practices specialized for the World Wide Web is to:
1. Better serve the customer by anticipating needs
2. Make the interaction efficient and satisfying for both parties
3. Build a relationship that encourages the customer to return for subsequent purchases

If you're really interested in personalization, do also consider: Bruce Kasanoff's "Making it Personal - How to Profit from Personalization without Invading Privacy" (2002).

This text is well constructed to be user friendly and simplistic in terms. The foundations in respiratory care are drugs and the effects of their use, primarily the use of bronchodilators. This text was well rounded for the beginner, but also went into the realms of cellular biology, general physiology, along with biochemistry. The understanding of basic chemistry is essential for productive readers. The overall structure and concepts of this book are defined and analyzed in appropriate order and in great detail. The overall concepts are conveyed and specific in description, this text is an excellent addition to the the multi-skilled RRT or the beginner CRTT. -MJW
