If you've been keeping up with the Amazing Agent Luna manga, you have a lot in store for you in this latest volume. Writers Defilippis and Weir (Destiny's Hand) and artist Shiei (AOI House) return to the incredible world of Luna Collins, as she once again struggles between her school girl cover and her secret agent double-life. However, in this installment, Luna must focus more than ever on the kidnapping of Principal Ohlinger at the same time trying to balance the trust between her friends.

Things definitely heat up in this volume as the characters' motivations surface in a torrent of fury. Luna questions about Francesca's "friendship" with Jonah while Oliver lets his jealousy get the best of him and winds up on the wrong side of the school's behaviorial conduct system. Mr. Dreyfus closely follows the trail to Nobel High's mysterious female ninja, and Luna can't risk having her secret identity exposed. Meanwhile, Count Von Bruken makes arrangements for our amazing agent to be silenced once and for all.

More evil henchmen, massive amounts of humor, a ton of high school drama, and a pinch of Luna's charm creates a deeper, darker, and much more spectacular Amazing Agent Luna. So don't let it slip by you, folks, because this is certainly a volume you don't want to miss out.

Amazing Agent Luna strikes again!

Authors Nunzizo DeFilippis and Christina Weir along with artist Shiei (AOI House) have given fans of Seven Seas Entertainment's Amazing Agent Luna series a third volume that more then satisfies expectations. Opening with a flashback that foreshadows events to come Amazing Agent Luna volume 3 shows there is no fear in taking Luna down a new excitingly darker path as the story progresses. Though some fans might worry that this path, which could seem far different from the lighter path seen in volumes 1 and 2, is too abrupt a change, the excellent artwork by Shiei and the wonderful story telling abilities of Nunzizo DeFilippis and Christina Weir keep Luna true to herself despite the new path she is taking. Amazing Agent Luna Volume 3 picks up where the story left off in volume 2, with Luna trying to discover what Professor Tromperie is doing for Count Von Brucken and if whatever he is doing has anything to do with the mysterious "Project Scion" which might involve the giant cloned owls. The last giant cloned owl is still being sought while Luna also attempts to discover what happened to Principal Ohlinger. However, these are not her only worries as it becomes clear Mr. Dreyfus is coming close to finding out the identity of mysterious "ninja girl" which would ruin Luna's cover and ability to stay in the school if she is discovered. If that possibility of discovery wasn't enough, Luna's feelings for Johan and her friend Francesca become far more jumbled as she remembers who Johan is, and sees him spending a lot of time talking to Francesca, all while Oliver is making it obvious he likes Luna a lot and is even willing to fight Jonah to show how much he cares for her. Add to this the event that was foreshadowed in the first chapter and Luna is left having to make a decision that will alter her life forever, and leave her more uncertain about herself and what she does then ever before. Amazing Agent Luna Volume 3 leaves the reader very eager to see just how deeply a key decision Luna has to make has hurt her and if Count Von Brucken can truly carry out his desire to have the identity of "mysterious ninja girl discovered" before she messes up his plans again. The final plot twist though, is enough to have this Luna fan longing to see what will happen next. This is a great read for fans new to Luna and fans returning to this wonderful series and this volume. This entire series, is a must for any manga collection.

I bought this book mostly for the artwork but the story behind the pictures also seemed--and is--very interesting. I came across it through a New York Times article and read more about it on Peter Malkins website. This is such a wonderful book. Every page is printed in georgous color and the artwork is fantastic. If you like the sketchbbook style paintings you see here and on his website, you won't be dissapointed. If I had to complain about anything it would be that the pictures run too far into the binding of the book (to help show the original sketchbook) and is sometimes difficult to see the pictures in all their glory.

After reading the memories and looking at the woderful paintings in the book, I realize how important life is. And how woderful it is I live in a free country where things like this do not happen. Have read thru this book 2x now just got it a while ago. I like the way everything is laid out in a logical progression. Plenty of photographs, very clear, shows a lot of close ups. It is hard to find good material on this subject except for some of the early stuff like Applegate's book and Tear Gas Munitions by Swaerengen. Those books are dated though, this one is up to date.
Plenty of info!!! The pepper spray chapter is worth the price alone.

Chapter on gas masks makes things clear as well.

This was an excellent book! It is a vivid, comprehensive and sweeping biography of a most important and influential man of the early American West. At the age of twenty four, Thomas Fitzpatrick started out with Ashley's expedition of 1823 as a fur trapper going up the Missouri River. The following year he discovered South Pass, then was part owner of the Rocky Mountain Fur Company. After the fur trade declined, he guided the first wagon train west over the Oregon Trail, then acted as guide to Fremont, Kearny and Abert on their expeditions. Later,he was appointed as an Indian Agent for the government and in this position he was most significant in facilitating relations with the Plains Indians. Leroy Hafen's writing is to be commended. He was an excellent author/historian. This is an easy book to read, and there is so much history to this remarkable man, Thomas Fitzpatrick.

This book is the result of a historian's dissertation on this little known now, but once well-known figure in the expansion of the west. Fitzpatrick discovered the Southern Pass, mentored Kit Carson, and is buried in the Congressional Cemetary in Washington DC. I'm not a fan of historical novels, or much of a student of history. But, this book described the way of life of the great western explorers of the 19th century in fascinating detail. Chock full of facts that I never learned in school history, this book sheds light on a poorly represented but important part of US history by tracing Fitzpatrick's life as reconstructed from historical documents and interviews with surviving ancestors. I highly recommend this book.

One of the colosal figures of the old West

Review Date: 2005-12-03
Most historians of the fur trade period of the old West regard Thomas Fitzpatrick as perhaps the greatest of all the Mountain Men, certainly among the top three or four along with Jedediah Smith and Jim Bridger, or perhaps Joseph Walker or Kit Carson. Hafen thinks of him as almost a god and writes glowingly of his exploits and character.

Fitzpatrick was born in Ireland (quite a few Mountain Men came from Irish or Scots-Irish descent) in 1799. He came to America by the age of 17 and was a member of Ashley's first venture up the Missouri in 1823. As a trapper he led parties into every region of the Rocky Mountain west, returning frequently at the end of the trapping season to St. Louis with that year's catch, only to return again a short time later with the supply trains for the designated rendezvous. He was owner for a while of the Rocky Mountain Fur Company, which he later sold to the American Fur Company. When the fur trade fell victim to a change in hat styles, Fitzpatrick became a guide for emigrant wagon trains and in the trade that existed along the Santa Fe Trail. He injured his hand (so the story goes, Fitzpatrick never gave a full account himself) in an encounter with the Blackfeet in 1836, and it was by the name Broken Hand that the Indians ever after called him. In 1843 he was guide with Fremont on his second expedition to Oregon and California, and guided Kearny to Socorro, NM, at the beginning of the Mexican War the following year. He became Indian Agent for the Central Plains tribes and organized many councils with them (including the famous Ft. Laramie council of 1851). He died in Washington, DC, there on Indian affairs business, in 1854.

Leroy Hafen was one of the greatest of the "old school" historical writers of the old West. He was an "on sight" researcher, tramping the same ground his subjects did, seeing what they saw. His footnotes, which often identify locations of vague references found in trapper journals or clarify and correct old diary entries, are often as fascinating as the text itself. He is a thorough and careful historian; nothing gets by him without the greatest of scrutiny. His admiration for Fitzpatrick comes through loud and clear: he calls him "an epic figure - unique and incomparable." Hafen is out of the old school of narrative historians (Parkman and Lossing come to mind), and he is a joy to read. History is never so enjoyable as in the hands of these writers. It's an excellent book, informative and entertaining. Highly recommended.

Advanced enough to be a textbook, basic enough to be a primer

The field of cellular automata (CA) is one that appears to be finite, yet unlimited, although it is a point of major debate. Where the ultimate conclusion lands depends on the fundamental origin of complexity, in particular that of intelligence. Some very sound thinkers argue that the universe itself is a complex CA, all of the phenomena we see are fundamentally explainable by a set of simple rules whereby actions are a consequence of state changes based on those rules. The apparent complexity that we perceive is due to the enormous number of objects that are involved and the number of different interactions that take place between them.
Cellular automata became an area of mainstream study when the Game of Life was developed. The fascinating feature of the game is that a small set of such simple rules can lead to what appear to be complex individual and collective behaviors. Schiff begins with the definitions of basic cellular automata, steps through the appearance of complexity and closes with some of the major arguments in favor of the literally universal applicability of CA.
The level of mathematics is fairly low; the most complex areas are the recurrence equations that define the next state and a few partial derivatives. With some additional explanation, the material is within the grasp of the second year math major. Most of the more complex mathematics can be skipped and the reader will still be able to understand and appreciate what CA are and some of the ways they can be used to model complex activities. This is the text I would use if I were to ever teach a special topics class in CA.

Outstanding overview of the field

This book provides an excellent overview of the field of cellular automata. It brings together a broad range of concepts and ideas which have been percolating over the past 70 years. In many ways the field of cellular automata and its offshoots remind me of the principles and ideas expounded on in Thomas Kuhn's book `The Structure of Scientific Revolutions'. For this field is truly revolutionary in its ability to easily show the power of emergent properties from simple rules.

The flow of the book is easy to understand and the documentation and references are excellent. The prose is well written and the author's ability to clarify basic ideas is exceptional.

I highly recommend this book. The first chapter `Preliminaries' clearly shows the author has brought a rich scope to the presentation of the material.

Although I have been nebulously aware of the term "Cellular Automata" for about 25 years, it was not until I read the book Cellular Automata that I really understood what it entails. As a result, I have become enamored with the field and its mathematical elegance. It is unfortunate for this fascinating field of study, that it is called Cellular Automata -- a marketing disaster if you ask me.

Though Cellular Automata probably has a strict definition, you can think of it as how simple rules governing a cell (or a neuron or an ant or whatever) through time can give rise to complex ordered systems. People often think that there's some intelligent design behind the complexity we see in nature, but as this book demonstrates, all it takes is a few simple rules about what happens in a local neighborhood to give rise to systems that order themselves into amazing complexity.

The book is a comprehensive survey of the history and current state of Cellular Automata. I wish I had the time to follow through on the amazing panoply of interesting paths, papers, web sites and ideas presented to the reader, but this could easily require a lifetime of study (and computer time).

In spite of having no background in Cellular Automata, I found this book to be extremely accessible and clearly written with many illustrative examples. I read the book cover-to-cover and understood it all, which for a textbook is really saying something. For the layman, it helps to have a strong mathematical background as well as a keen interest in number theory, but none of this is necessary. One of the nice things about this book is that if for some reason you don't understand a topic such as say, the Sierpinski Triangle, the rest of the book is not predicated upon it, even if it is called back on occasion.

The only possible issue I had with the text is that complex theoretical concepts were on rare occasion difficult to follow. Such concepts were introduced in order to give readers a complete primer on the current state of CA research, but the reader has to trust that the results are as stated in the book, and that an army of Grad Students carried out all the dirty work. Step-by-step implementation is (and should be) beyond the scope of the text, although for math weenies like myself, it may have clarified certain concepts.

Highly recommended.

Chemical and biological warfare is very much a real concern in our world. In the aftermath of 9-11, I found this book to contain very clear and easy-to-read information about how I can best protect myself and my family in the case of exposure to these toxic agents. The descriptions, symptoms, treatments and prevention are presented in a way that allows ordinary people like me to assess potentially dangerous situations quickly enough to possibly even save lives. The truth is that in many instances knowing the facts can reduce fear and keep damage at a minimum. The information in this book is presented in a way that is factual, concise and not sensationalized. I think in our current world situation that this book is a must-read for positively everyone!

This book is perfect for our times. It is my experience that churches, pastors and congregations are totally confused and uninformed regarding music for their church. Mr. Miller gives a fair and complete explanation of all kinds of music and what it means. The objective view is based on the Bible. I think before we can argue about the "Comtemporary Christian Music Debate" we need to be well informed on every level. Mr. Miller does just that. The book helps to clarify what is true and what we have heard from others. Every Christian needs to be informed on this subject. His research is both fascinating and extensive. This unique treasure of information is a must for anyone searching true answers on Christian Music.

Great Historical Background to a Current Debate
By "Book Heaven" (Georgia)

There is nothing more divisive than the type of music used in churches across the country on Sunday mornings. Yet, do we need to quarrel? Author Steve Miller provides a biblical framework for deciding what type of music will speak to the hearts of people. What other criteria should we use? The best sections of the book deal with the history of church music. Great lessons are here! Can't wait for an updated version to be written by this writer. Coping with Chemotherapy: Compassionate Advice and Authoritative Information from a Chemotherapy Survivor

Bruning covers aspects of curing Cancer that no one is prepared for, in a factual, non-pitying way. This book is a departure from many "I Survived the Big C" books that gloss over how to contend with symptoms and side effects that do have remedies.

As she covers each topic, you may find her own personal experience tucked among the information. But her recovery is not the subject here. It was the variety of information, some outside the traditional approaches with their risks, besides what foods may be helpful.

When I joined CANSURVIVORS, a help group through American Cancer Society, I knew that a factual help book like this was immensely important to ease people through their illness. I refer to it all the time, but often have given my copy away again!

After my treatment, with many bumps along the way despite the best of care, I was determined that a different book was needed. I would write it. I organized the topics, and was searching for professionals to interview. I was startled to find that Bruning followed my outline in "Coping with Chemotherapy" two years earlier. She had written my book very well! I thank her again.

My mother is currently going thru chemotherapy and this book is incredibly helpful. Nancy Bruning, the author, is herself a breast cancer survivor and went thru chemotherapy.

"Coping With Chemotherapy" covers every physical symptom I have had to look up as well as the emotional aspects of cancer and chemo. In the beginning of the book Bruning also provides information on the "basics" of how cancer and chemo work...WITHOUT using too much jargon. And because Bruning has been thru this HERSELF, you know she's not blowing smoke up your butt. Bottom line? If you or a loved one are currently getting chemo or trying to find out about some options, this book is a refreshingly honest and caring help.

Very helpful tool for those facing chemo.

Frankly, I've never thought much about astrology. It's never been a hobby of mine or of much interest. However, when I apply the information this author provides about my Black Lab, it all makes so much sense. Though Alex (my dog) is a purebred, I didn't know her birthday (or, her sun sign). By following the author's recommendations, I've been able to determine Alex is a Pisces. Now, we have a new birthday to celebrate in our household. This is a fun book! I would recommend it to any dog lover. And, I think Ms. Barnwall has made people think about what they have to offer dogs as companions, rather than what dogs have to offer humans as servants. Very interesting!

It is amazing, that after so many years raising and training dogs, that something has come out that makes sense of so many questions on dog behavior that I have had over the years. It isn't even in print yet and I am waiting to see what is next from Ms. Barnewall.

"Cosmic Canines" has solved at least a half dozen my Christmas shopping problems!
