I did a TON of research on my own to attempt to find an agent. I picked up this book, hoping to add to my knowledge and list of available agents. I discovered I had wasted some of my precious writing time. Some of the agents I wrote are not accepting queries in 2001. This book would have saved me time, money and efforts had I bought it first.

I'd like to get published.

It may seem strange to say that you love a big listing literary agents but I do. I've been writing my whole life. Just recently I decided to look into getting an agent for a book I wrote. I bought this book, sent out six queries, and already have an agent requesting to read my book. This book is indispensable. Read it if you are even thinking about looking for an agent.

Jane Stuart is busy planning her sons birthday party, when the body of a young woman is found hanging from a tree. Dead. By a group of kids playing an innocent game of scavenger hunt. Immediatley everyone turns to Jane, Shady Hills, New Jersey's very own private detective. As a recent story in "People" stated. Much to Jane's chagrin. Before she knows it, another murder takes place. This time editor Holly Griffin is murdered. But not before she can sign Jane up to be the pop star Goddess' literary agent. Before Jane knows it, she's in over her head. What with murder, kidnapping, book parties, weddings, funerals, and cheating. Who would have ever thought that a small town like Shady Hills could be so full of mystery?

I found this book enjoyable and fun, yet lacking in the mystery department. "Hanging Hannah" is more of a book that deals with relationships. Whether it's between Jane and her son, Jane and her boyfriend, Jane and her co-worker, etc. Still, it's a nice cozy read when you've got nothing to do.

He's done it again!

This second contribution by this wonderful author outshines the first, if that is possible. I read the entire book in one night because it was so wonderfully written and suspenseful that I could not stop. Needless to say, I was very tired the next day but it was completely worth it. Anyone who enjoys mystery books (I like the Kay Scarpetta series and the Stephanie Plum series) should definitely check out this talented writer. I am anxiously awaiting the third book in this excellent series.

HANGING HANNAH is the second mystery in this enjoyable series. Our sleuth is Jane Stuart. She is a sensitive widow and mother of one. She is also a literary agent, which adds some interesting elements to the story for those who love to learn more about the book business. Winky is her cat. She helps Jane to solve mysteries in the most unusual ways.

During a birthday party Jane is throwing for her son, there is a gruesome discovery. When the mystery begins, everyone reminds Jane that she is the new Miss Marple and expects her to get involved. One of the perks for getting involved is meeting a handsome returning detective. Jane juggles her job as parent, friend, agent and sleuth with more grace than she realizes. She is a strong, nonsense character surrounded by other well developed and yet to be developed secondary characters.

I enjoyed this cozy so much I plan to follow the series in the future. Besides some terrific series characters, the mystery itself was fascinating. It blended in with Jane and other characters lives without loosing ground. It took a turn or two that I wasn't expecting and the ending was a remarkable surprise.

People's Magazine heralds Jane Stuart as North Jersey's Miss Marple for solving the case of the missing nanny. Owner of the Kenneth Stuart Literary Agency, Jane has no aspirations to a sleuthing career, but her reputation makes her a crime magnet. When a stranger is murdered, the shocked citizens of Shady Hills expect their local "private investigator" Jane to uncover the truth. Jane has a personal interest in this crime since her son discovered the body and the victim was seen hanging around the inn owned by Jane's friend Louise.

When the police question Louise's philandering husband Ernie, the innkeeper asks Jane to help solve the murder. Reluctantly, Jane agrees to conduct some inquiries although she is becoming romantically involved with the lead investigator. Her professional job also turns complicated when she agrees to handle Goddess, a female Fabio, as a client. However, Goddess' editor is killed during a publishing bash given for another of Jane's clients. Jane realizes she now needs to solve these homicides fast or she will become a media event again.

Life parallels art in this amusing and entertaining amateur sleuth mystery. The author, like his protagonist is a literary agent residing in a small New Jersey village and knows first hand how to deal with authors and publishing houses. This experience is firmly focused in Jane's professional life so that readers have an up close and personal look into the publishing world. Winky, the feline owner of the Stuart family, provides humorous relief from the high-tension environment and will be adored by animal lovers who read this mystery. HANGING HANNAH is a humorous who-done-it that captures the essence of modern day living in a small town amidst the BosWash megalopolis.

Real fedora and trenchcoat nostalgia!!

Review Date: 2007-08-07
Larry Evans transports his spellbound readers backwards in time to the long-gone world of chrome-sided diners and stale cigarette smoke... the pay phone...the number to call...the hard-boiled protagonist's roving eye for skirts. He doesn't mention it once...he doesn't have to...but you can see the eighty-nine cent blue plate special scrawled on the chalkboard. Rich imagery in the classic film noir tradition abounds in this story.

This is true crime thriller nostalgia, seen through the eyes of a solitary hitman, moving from place to place...one as good as the next...always in the service of the 'company'.

The reader is beguiled by this kind of crime drama nostalgia...and finds himself straining to see beyond the next name on the list...you know something is out there...on those rainy streets with their iron grate fire escapes...even on a steamship enroute to Lisbon. Larry Evans' hit man is as comfortable the one place as the next...it's a business...

And then the jolt! If you were chewing on popcorn you likely dumped half of it on the floor! Nicely done, Mister Evans! My kind of nostalgia! Five Stars!

Amelia Bascome thinks she is the better half of a nefarious team, her adopted husband, Gerry, the other half. Amelia is right but the one minor detail she doesn't know about the plan could kill her. The pair board a steamer headed to Lisbon to ply their deadly trade. All goes well, business, after all, is business.

I am a fan of this style of first person writing and the author pulls it off beautifully. I hope to read more of Larry Evans.

Larry Evens comes up with a chilling tale a cold blooded contract killer that is told in the first person. This story was well written and his characters were well thought out. The word usage and descriptions were awesome. When a woman partner is brought into the loop to help with the next assignment, the killer isn't happy, but he learn very quickly she is just as cold hearted as he is. This author introduces a twist to the end that is fitting. This story makes me wonder at who is out in this world walking around among us. You never know what is in the mind of someone beside you who may have no heart.

I was blown away by this short piece of literature. Mr. Evans is very effective with his first person narrative style. I also appreciate the author's command of imagery and description. The use of words like "dame", "skirt", as well as the reference to the nickel phone booth takes the reader to a specific time without actually saying 1929, or whatever. I thought Mr. Evans short, The List, is well written and I recommend it with unbridled enthusiasm.

This book is straightforward and seems complete comparing it to the vast information currently available online. The only problem is that it was published in 1988 and it is difficult to have confidence that you have "covered all the bases" with respect to negotiating a current book contract. It is a fine starting point and will help give a grasp of the terminology and major issues involved.

For lawyers I recommend supplementing this book with some online continuing education courses. For lay people with a book deal pending, it is worth reading but should not be your only resource.

As a contracts attorney myself, I used it to analyze the contract submitted to me by a mainstream publisher, only to discover that they were trying to "fleece" me.

This book is indispensable for any author interested in getting a fair deal. I cannot recommend it highly enough. It is well written, easily accessible and virtually timeless in content. Mark is very attuned to the industry and his advice amply demonstrates this.

From the author of 'People's Names':

I didn't know how much my library needed this. It may at first seem a relatively brief book, but you more than get your money's worth.

The prose is clear and simple, but the information is densely packed. No marshmallow padding to let your brain relax. Plan on reading no more than a chapter a night to absorb this, or you'll start getting foggy from information overload.

If you have not faced a contract, this will prepare you for most of what you are likely to be offered, and what you might ask for or change. If you have signed contracts, you may want to kick yourself for not reading this sooner. (I did. One or two light kicks, not bad.) The next contract I go over, with a new agent or not, is going to give me a lot more than the last one. It will also help me double-check my new agent.

O wishful beginners, agents are not only not omniscient, they are often looking out more for their interests than for yours. This means that some will try to keep the publishers real happy with them and not push anything you don't demand. If you don't know what to push for or adjust, the agent won't necessarily rock the boat by making suggestions. Some day I'll get one of those agents who is a writer's best friend, but until then this book helps me be my own best friend in the business.

This book is genuinely eye-opening. It is an advanced text focusing on five-phase acupuncture models. It discusses various phase types, and also utilizes case studies to clarify his perspective. It is highly psycho-emotionally oriented, and therefore useful to add to the more standard library of acupuncturists. Along with Jeremy Ross' book, I use this book most frequently.

Lonny Jarrett is one of the few authors who provides a complete analysis of the five elements that can be applied to everyday practice. I found as I read his book, which I did several times, various patients came to mind (others were not so clear...). Patients also related to the descriptions of the five elements as it affected their lives. The approach provided me with the extra information I needed to better treat an energy imbalance, rather than symptoms alone. The way Lonny combines the things we learn, the way we interpret the world, and the make up we bring to it, was practical and applicable. He seems to be more from the Worsley school with its emphasis on the psychological rather than the cosmological school. If more books like Lonny's come to print, I believe Western Chinese Medicine will really have come of age.

The author gives a good introduction to the different ethnic groups in the US today. Differences cultures and approaches are discussed however I found certain mistakes (basically for the Hispanic segment). He generalized most of the population,, maybe it wasnt his intention but it's true. However, it is a good book for newbies. It helps you in you already are in the real estate business dealing with emerging markets today. I recommend it.

I'm an emotional intelligence coach with an international clientele, not a realtor, but this book helped me tremendously. I would recommend it to anyone with a multicultural clientele or consumer-base. Concisely, and with great empathy, Mr. Lee describes cultures in a way that saves you reading tons of others books to get the same information. It saved me a lot of grief as I coached my first Pakistani client to know the difference between Pakistani and Indian, and explained to me why clients from certain cultures never seem to quit negotiating. Since emotional intelligence involves social skills, relating and empathy, it's crucial that I have a working-knowledge of how other cultures differ. One culture's "love of negotiating" is another culture's "pushy." One culture's "affiliative" is another culture's "not-sticking-to-business." And now I know not to cross my legs with a Middle-Eastern client. It's broadly applicable. If you have an international clientele, or do business on the Internet, you can't afford not to read this book. Really outstanding.

This is a well-researched and insightful book for anyone in real estate, related fields or home sellers who find themselves doing business with buyers from outside the American culture. This book helps you understand people from other cultures and their beliefs as they relate to real estate. The author not only explains what multicultural people do differently but also the reasons behind their unique practices and superstitions.

I found the sections on beliefs and negotiation to be particularly valuable. I always wondered why some groups continued to negotiate after a purchase contract had been signed or which were lucky addresses -- now I know.

Also, the background information on people from Asia, Mexico, Latin America, the Middle East, and Europe was extremely enlightening. Get this book if you have any contact with people from other cultures - it will save you not only time but frustration as well. It could also be useful reading for people in industries outside real estate which do business with other cultures.

Panama declared its independence from Spain in the 1820s and quickly allied itself with Gran Colombia. Big mistake. Colombia treated her not as a co-equal state but as an unimportant province. It was a place for the Bogata upper class to make money. Of course health conditions in Panama were horrible so they stayed in beautiful and healthy Bogota. Overseers took care of their investmentz. Absentee ownership, with all its negatives, led to further abuse of Panamanians. Not at all differnet from how Spain treated Panama during the colonial era. A colony to be expoited. In the 80 plus years that Panama was a province of Colombia, there were 83 uprisings on the Ithmus. Many were put down by the USA under a treaty with Colombia. Then came along Theodore Roosevelt and he allowed the November 1903 uprising to succeed. He wanted a canal buiilt and he was a very impatient person. The rest is history.
This book is accurate in that the urban and the rural poor in Panama have a very difficult existence. They always have. No government has really had their best interests at heart. Since separating from Colombia in 1903, Panama, with few exceptions, has been ruled by 50 families. They are the masters of the country. The best education, the best jobs, and government patronage goes to them. They are the ones who have kept the poor, poor and downtrodden. Hopefully it will change some day. This book provides useful insights into the reality of the poor in Panama, but a viable solution has yet to surface. Must the poor wait another hundred years?

If you are interested in the rural poor of Latin America, or have anything to do with Panama and improvement projects here, this is the bible. I have been in areas like the ones the author describes in her book, and even as a Panamanian, I was appalled to see how poor the poor can be. Evertyhing Rudolf said is true. Even so, the humanity she portrays in the lives of her characters, prevent them from being caricatures. They are real people, living their lives.

Rudolf shows us the complexities of life for Panama's poor.

Rudolf gives us a unique look at the forgotten voices of Panamanian politics, society and culture. In the 1980s, we were led to believe that somehow, someway Panamanians were not well-suited for democracy. In Panama's Poor, we learn that the weak and poor of Panama have been struggling for a voice for countless years. When much of the writing on Panama focuses on the United States, the Canal and the elite in Panama City, Rudolf opens our eyes to what we should really be looking at: the authentic Panamanain.
