I liked the descriptive writing
J.T. Fitzgerald Is a great author! I loved his first book too! This book was a bit more like a mystery/action book. I like to picture the story happening in my mind and with the way J.T.Fitzgerald writes that's easy because hes adds all the good detail! I'm looking forward to another CIA/Military war book he comes out with. If yu enjoy a nice action/mystery book this one is great!

Mesmerizing
For the generations that did not exist during the Vietnam era, this book weeds out the rumors and tells the true story of what this war was really like. I could not put it down, I read it in one night. I did not think that J.T. Fitzgerald could ever top his first book Operation Stagecoach Red but I was delightfully surprised! Traitor in White Laces is the perfect sequel and a thrilling ride!

Tells it like it really is
This book is facinating. I was totally imersed in it and sorry that it ended. Maybe the author could write a sequel since ATF is now under the Department of Justice with a new mission of fighting worldwide terrorism.

The Most Accurate, True To Life Crime Book I Ever Read
This book gives readers a graphic look at the REAL world of crime, investigation, and the inner world of law enforcement, along with fascinating facts and interesting stories.

Pinkerton Points to a Better Way
I must begin my review by admiting I am biased. James Pinkerton wrote the foreword to my book "Empowerment to the People" (Free Congress Foundation). It is difficult to compare Jim's book to others out there on the subject because there are only a handful that exist.

Jim wants the reader to abandon all of the old ideas of governing that have proven unworkable and pursue a new approach (or paradigm) to big government problems. Unlike traditional liberals who place big government as a sacred cow that should not be touched, he believes every program should prove its worthiness in order to continue to exist. But Jim is not a traditional conservative either, that wants to gut every government program because they are just that -- government programs. Jim proposes a new way, approaches that bring government and power back into the hands of the people. He wants to pursue ways in which incentives are restored for government programs to work and programs that actually hurt people are eliminated or, at least, dramatically changed.

What Pinkerton offers is a fantastic, yet realistic, challenge to the status quo that every serious student of government would appreciate. It is filled with common sense that will force the reader to say, "its about time someone said that."

In sum, it is an extraordinary book which should serve as a framework for developing policy as we enter the 21st century.

Whistleblowers: Broken Lives and Organizational Power

No Time for Heroes: Feeding the Saints to the Beasts
If the 20th century was the era of totalitarian states then it was also the era of many isolated and unsung individuals attempting to withstand particular instances of cruelty, brutality and inhumanity. Surprisingly, the institutions of oppression associated with Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia, and the People's Republic of China resonate to one degree or another in larger modern organizations found in contemporary North America: multi-nationals, municipal entities, Federal corporations and agencies. The methods for destroying individuals are vastly improved over the knock on the door at midnight and the train ride to an Arctic concentration camp. Now, dissidents are eliminated cleanly, quietly, even "legally."

The point of this book is that the forms of ethical resistance associated with the incredible heroism of figures such as Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Oscar Schnidler, and Harry Wu occur under different appearances today.

Unfortunately, the effect of resistance to evil ordinarily produces futile results - the walls seem to specialize in falling in on the individual resister while the public good and general interest is hardly advanced following the episodes. In a sense, this is a dark book perhaps of neo-Gothic horror since the reality is that the doers of evil escape thanks to enjoying the presumption of right and virtual invisibility. Repressive organizational technique includes "learned helplessness" (the bureaucratic ability to appear innocent while invariably smashing the box marked "fragile"), the employment of lawyers skilled in turning statutes into injustice, and the exploitation of the inherent ability of modern organizations to avoid accountability and, even, recognition.

Who needs this book?

Professor Alford's book has particular value to would be authors, instructors, and playwrights. These will find the book muse-like for its stock of great and gory chucks of raw reality. In its pages new ideas, vistas and themes to inspire the imaginative writer, even the artist. One can readily imagine a contemporary Arthur Miller carefully taking notes as he or she turns the pages.

For the discerning reader, this book is even collectible for its future scarcity - like a copy of Freud in Hitler's Third Reich. Prim organizational librarians and censorious officials will recoil at the ghastly truths and pitiable realities described within its pages. One may rest assured that the book will never found in the libraries of Federal agencies - unless the agency's business involves harassing whistle blowers. Those few copies placed in public libraries will certainly be culled out and disappear from sight when the real meaning and significance of it become known to the authorities.

For the general consumer, entranced with the illusory world purveyed by the mass media - luxuriating in consumerism, searching for impressive books to place on the coffee table, Prof. Alford's tome is apt to be baffling, improbable, and irritating.

Moreover, and worse of all, it has no pictures and does not even come with a music CD.

Who Stole the News?: Why We Can't Keep Up With What Happens in the World and What We Can Do About It

Understanding the news
For anyone who wishes to understand the process of news gathering, this book is the best available. I use it in all my international news classes at Scripps School of Journalism. Rosenblum extracts from his lifetime of journalism a clear, logical and comprehensive explanation of how the story you read got there, and what influences affected its selection and presentation at every stage of the process. It's also a fascinating and exciting read, by one of the world's most prolific and professional journalists. He introduces you to individual correspondents, both as individuals and as types. He explains how geography, economics and sheer prejudice can determine what you learn about the world. He tells great bar stories -- the kind of thing journalists tell each other over a beer. And he does it all with skill and style. Worth reading by anyone -- a must for anyone interested in news.

Speak up!
A great book. Even though it focuses primarily on american media, it's lesson can be applied in all parts of the world: We need to start making demands on the media, instead of letting it dictate what we need to know. An eye-opener.

Act of Treason: The Role of J. Edgar Hoover in the Assassination of President Kennedy

The Final Chapter on the JFK Assassination
This book is one of the most important books that I have read on the JFK assassination - and I have read over a dozen since 1964. It is the "final chapter" as it provides the "big picture" answer.

It uses the information that came out since the 1970s. The Congressional Investigation in 1977 resulted in a number of books afterwards.

If you read Curt Gentry's "J. Edgar Hoover, The Man and the Myth" you would know that Hoover had been filing false expense reports for decades, and built up a small fortune. (He stayed at hotels and ate at restaurants for free, then collected expenses as if he had paid.) If he ever left office, he would have been convicted for fraud, and died in jail. He had no other option but to die in office, since he could not (or would not) get a "get out of jail free" card. (The Watergate Burglary came apart when one of the burglars did not get this, as promised.)

You should know that this GOOJF card is not just an invented scene in the movie "Clear and Present Danger". Back in the 1940s the four-star General who headed the CIA went to President Truman with a complaint about an assignment: it clearly crossed the line into a felony. But Harry just wrote out a signed but undated full Presidential Pardon! Read the biography of Allen Dulles, "Gentleman Spy" for more details.

And LBJ's crony was implicated in various frauds, some of which were said to be in complicity with organized crime. LBJ was likely to be dumped as vice-president, and would also face prosecution, disgrace, and jail.

Mark North has collected a number of letters that passed between LBJ and JEH. Surely no one would expect either of them to put their plans in writing?

This book helped us adopt our daughter
I initially found this book in our local library in early 1994. I then ordered a copy of my very own so that I could write notes in the edges and make notations in the margins. I used this book to find agencies that had parameters that we were looking for: location, price for adoption services(we are not rich), and average waiting times. I mailed many of the agencies in the book and we recieved many, many referrals. One of them lead to the adoption of our daughter in October 1994. She is now eight, and the joy of our lives. My only regret is that there has been no updated version of this book as we are tring to adopt another child and updated information would be sooooo helpful.

Analytical and Crisp
I am basing my comparison on the parts that I have read, for it is a very detailed analysis of the industry. I would recommend it as a source book for anyone involved in media planning or investment banking tracking the industry. It is the best reference guide I have seen so far. It is less interesting for those seeking a career in advertising, for this audience I would recommend Wet feet's "A Guide Careers in Advertising". Keeping in mind that predicting future market scenarios is a difficult task this study is a must have.

I would like to have an opportunity to thank the authors myself for this great work of analysis.

Scholarly Insights About Advertising World
This book is to the meaning production world of advertising what Howard Becker's book "Art Worlds" was to the world of art production. The articles in the collection are fascinating thick descriptions of the processes, negotiations, intentionalities and symbolic actions of ad agencies versus client companies versus end consumers as new marketing programs are produced and evolved in the US and around the world.
