A MUST for understanding the phenomenon of the USSR
This book provides a detailed insight into how Soviet leaders used their internal intelligence agency as an instrument of ultimate oppression. Lots of well-documented detail. The present tense only gets in the way for a bit (remember it was published while this was still going on -- before the fall of the USSR) and does not alter the facts as they were under the Soviet system. There is no other book which gives one quite the depth and insight this one does. Definitely a MUST for anyone interested in how things really worked in the USSR. Its a lesson to all of us. You want this book.

Unique insight into what was an unequalled repressive syste
The book reveals the unique qualifications and inside knowledge of the two authors. There is no better description of the systematic repression of a modern population. Its appearance just before the fall of the Soviet Union invalidated its present tense, nevertheless, for anyone interested in how Soviet power survived for 70 years, this is the definitive work. A must for students of this subject.

a sexy, thrilling novel.
Pat Booth does it again with a sexy, thrilling romp about life in the Sin City of the '90s. With plenty of double-dealing rascals and hard-hearted heroines (who always happen to be beautiful), Booth takes us to places we've always wanted to go, and occasionally, to places we'd never want to. The dialogue is as sharp as a scythe. Characters, although glamorous, waver between the self-absorbed and just plain cruel. Although Booth's novel takes us far from reality, isn't that what we most often want a book to do? The perfect escape.

A Must!
For all you Pat Booth fans, Miami is a must. If you loved Palm Beach, then go south to Miami. Pat Booth's ability to articulate in words the sights and sounds, heat and passion of Miami makes this book truly a piece of art. If you can't afford to take that vacation to Florida, then bring Miami to you. You'll be whisked away to a place you'll never want to leave. Enjoy.

Sherlock Homes Suspense
David, it's me Bruce Lee - email me at bruce@davismicro.com 10/12/9

Revealing, sensitive study of a disturbed, charismatic man
Barry Rothman was indeed an enigma to those who thought they knew him. Radiating charisma, creating his own world, burning like a "candle in the wind", adults and children alike responded to the spark within him. David B. Rothman took the time to examine the twists and turns of the brief life, a feat that only a determined, heartbroken child could accomplish. Mr. Death stands not only as a biography, but as a work of art in itself. Only those who knew Barry can realize the strength it took to examine his life with a critical, yet caring eye. David has accomplished this. No one else could. Everyone else was either too angry for what he was not, or too caught up in the myth of what he was.

Good job David!

Well written - highly informative
David Wise displays his through knowledge of the CIA and the business of intelligence in this excellent book. Well written, highly readable.

Perhaps the most disturbing element of the story is the refusal of CIA leaders to consider the posibility that someone ( or perhaps more than one) as damaging as Ames was deep inside with access to some of the most potentially damaging secrets.

Highly recommended

A must for the definitive cloak and dagger collection...
Not only is this a masterfully written book, but Wise (I suspect) reveals tidbits that many within the ranks of the CIA were surprised to read. Best read in one sitting.

Organizing Empire: Individualism, Collective Agency, and India

Postcolonialism, yes, but with a materialist edge to it...
In her first book, "Organizing Empire: Individualism, Collective Agency, and India," Purnima Bose musters strong archival skills, rhetorical elegance and theoretical sophistication to reveal (powerfully) the ways that colonial and anti-colonial forms of political discourse and historiography created domesticated models of "rogue individualism" and "heroic individualism" to explain away, disavow and sublimate into accomplishment the epistemic, legalized, and routine domination of the British Empire in India and Ireland. Modes of "feminist nationalist" and "heroic nationalist" forms are also exposed in relentless critical detail to show the makings of elite-subaltern forms of agency, narration, and resistance. Everywhere, the mode of analysis here is informed, engaged, fully situated and complex in its vision of agency, discourse, hegemony, and the state; no easy or comforting model of "postcolonial hybridity" is offered by her here to assuage the analysis of culture and discourse, as subjected individualism, under the enlightenment regimes and discourses of British empire.

Prolific pages for diverse audiences
Bose's beautiful prose style is exceeded only by the sharpness and originality of her insights. A must have for anyone interested in post-colonial theory, historical analysis of the region, or just curious thinkers interested in a great read.

The documents speak for themselves
As a intern for Dr. Newman on this particular book, I spent countless hours searching for documents in the National Archives - I know first hand the length he went to provide accurate details. Dr. Newman recounts the interesting story of a dark point in our nation's history. He is very careful not to speculate on the assassination of Kennedy - he deals only with the facts before him - CIA and FBI documents that display what they knew about Oswald. He leaves the rest to the 'assassination buffs'

Oswald and CIA: was there a connection? Author thinks so.
This is an important book in the Kennedy assassination genre. It contains the text of CIA documents not previouslypublished, attempting to establish a CIA connection withLee Harvey Oswald and subsequent efforts on the part of the CIA to conceal this connection through tampering with itsOswald files. The book is flawed by poor editing, andfrom time to time the author makes great leaps in his logic, but for all that, it is well worth the time spent reading. The book breaks off after Oswald's death. One can onlyhope that Mr. Newman writes another volume addressing post-assassination events, including the controversy surroundingthe bona fides of KGB defector Yuriy Nosenko and his claimto have been the KGB officer supervising the Oswald file inRussia

The Peace Corps Experience: Challenge and Change, 1969-1976

The Peace Corps in the 1970's
The Peace Corps in the 1960's under founding Director Sargent Shriver and later under Jack Vaughn has been well chronicled in such books as "Come as You Are" by Coates Redmond, "A Moment in History" by former Deputy Director Brent Ashabranner, "The Bold Experiment" by Gerard Rice and more recently by Cobbs Hoffman's "All you Need is Love."

Less well known is the history of the Peace Corps in the 1970's when Richard Nixon tried to dismantle the agency. Recent scholarship by Professor Hoffman has shown that Nixon's Peace Corps Director Joe Blatchford fought a rear-guard action to save the Peace Corps by supporting its merger into the ill-fated Action Corps. Director Blatchford's other contributions to the Peace Corps have never been adequately recognized, among them his "New Directions" policies to re-orient the agency.

David Searles, who served three years as the country director for the Peace Corps in the Philippines, and two years at Peace Corps headquarters as a Regional Director for North Africa, Near East, Asia, and Pacific (NANEAP) and as Deputy Director under John Dellenback, provides an insider's look at the Peace Corps as well as a revisionist history of the Peace Corps in the 70's which emphasizes the political imperatives that drove many of the decisions made.

The recounting of the Action Corps' shortcomings and problems is especially timely as history repeats itself with President George W. Bush's Executive Order in February, 2002 creating the USA Freedom Corps with the Peace Corps as one of the main components.

Highly recommended.

Interesting and informative look at the history of the PC
I enjoyed the first hand experience by Searles and his family in the Philippines. A great history lesson of those times and experiences. A wonderful account of a successful business man who took to heart the words of JFK. Ask not what the country can do for you, ask what you can do for your county. P. David Searles embraced that philosphy and volunteered and moved his entire family to a different country. A first hand account of all the adventures the family had while there. JFK would have been proud.

Dream State
The errors in book description were corrected by the time I looked, but it is somehow appropriate--Burkard's symbols are transmitted from across great distance, from alternate universes, at least alternate states of mind. Imagine drawing with a pencil and slowly drifting into sleep--the pencil continues to get more erratic, and with a lighter touch...

The book is misattributed, there are errors in electronic transmission, the book, the book,

One of Burkard's best!
It is a shame that such a beautiful book is listed by Amazon with such carelessness. Myronn Hardy did not co-author this book, and Burkard's name is spelled incorrectly. There are also electronic transmission errors in the text of the book description, such as apostrophes being replaced by question marks. Amazon should get its act together

Regulating Covert Action: Practices, Contexts, and Policies of Covert Coercion Abroad in International and American Law
Published in Hardcover by Yale Univ Pr (February, 1992)
Authors: W. Michael Reisman and James E. Baker
Amazon base price: $47.50

The Clearest Exposition Available
Reisman and Baker bring much needed clarity to an legal area which is controversial and a moving target. Superb exposition. Useful "take aways" for a national security practitioner. Have always enjoyed Reisman's clarity of thought particularly in his analysis of Law of the Sea issues - - he does it again in the area of covert operations.

I hope a second edition is written which analyzes the law of covert operations as it applies to current U.S. Government policies and practices. An analysis of how information operations fits into this overall scheme would also be interesting.

Well done!

Best analysis of covert action policy-making available.
This book is the best analysis of covert action policy-making I have read. Surprisingly, it is written by two legal scholars, and not by political scientists. It's primary purpose is to analyze the international legal status of covert actions. However, it contains a detailed and thoughtful analysis of the goals and objectives of covert action. In addition, it has a good list of covert actions carried out by a number of countries.
