"Biotechnology for Aerospace Applications" was the proceeding to a symposium on Biotechnology held at the US Air Force Academy in 1989. The personalities at the symposium were recognized experts in their specialities in Biotechnology.

The papers dealt with important issues such as alternative fuel resources, environmental remediation with microorganism, biosensors, biodegradable detergents, marine biotechnology, chemical processes with catalytic antibodies, optics, unique problems of biotech in space, etc. The only down-side of the symposium was BioSphere II, which was more fad than science.

While many of the attendees were involved in defense related work, the symposium more or less focused on a wider industry applications. Having attended this symposium, I found this book a good presentation of the discussions held.

This book is of great value. Kim takes a complicated matter like Semiotics and makes it very easy to understand. My thanks goes out to him. Dr. Kim, who teaches at Mount Vernon Nararene College, has lead his students on a easy to understand guide of Mass Communications and other classes that relate to this feild. This book is a must read for anyone who is interested in pursuing a career in the commuincation feild. Booknews, Inc. said he was a woman when he is really a man. I am correcting their mistake.

It's difficult to wrap one's head around some of the modern catylst chemistry. This book is basically a collection of papers from the 70's which was the springboard for catylitic converters. Many of the papers have nice graphs which show oxide reduction as functions of different things. A good read for anyone trying to make alternative NO2 reduction systems as it's much cheaper to get this book than pay for the articles online.

Excellent book on Categorization and Learning. It includes great examples of research in Cognition using connectionist models and neural networks. Two of the editors (Nakamura and Taraban) are well known from Texas Tech University. Medin needs no introduction. This book should not be ignored.

This is a fantastic book ca: 1994, printed 1996, which is still relevant for scientists in the year 2005. The book covers the minute details of cerebral ischemia mechanisms discussing glutamate excitotoxicity, calcium, IEG, c-fos, c-jun, hypothermia, LTP, LTD, spreading depression, steroids, free radicals and scavengers, ZN-SOD, NO and NO Synthase, and many other topics. There are over 50 chapters, making this a comprehensive coverage. The material is dated so that one must not rely on this book for everything. Wolfgang Walz wrote a more recent volume entitled Cerebral Ischemia by Humana which is worth looking at. Bo Siesjo and T. Wieloch are the editors so you know it is going to be good with excellent commentaries at the end of each chapter & section. Bo apparently moved from Lund so that contacting him could be difficult.

Dr. MacDonald has edited a brilliant reference on the etiology and pathophysiology of cerebral vasospasm. He discusses the roles of ionic and molecular mediators of the disease, such as magnesium, calcium, voltage gated potassium channels, and MAP Kinase. He looks at mediators such as phosphatases and protein kinases in detail. This is a fundamental great source for the neuroscientist working in the laboratory on vasospasm. The authors are well respected neurosurgeons and scientists with a specialty training in cerebrovascular diseases. Unlike the Cerebral Vasospasm text by Weir & MacDonald, this book goes into animal models in great detail. I have used this book many times for my own research.

Using methods of discourse analysis, the authors examine not only representative material from reading tests but also children's responses to that material. In short, they talk to children about why they chose the answers they did, and suddenly the reader is made aware of how biased toward an adult perspective the reading tests are. We see how convincing children's "wrong" answers are.

The book is particularly attentive to the role of culture in shaping children's understanding of what they read.

Besides all this, the authors' style is straightforward and easy going.

This book is as good as anything I've read by Crichton, Stephen King, and the like. Mr. Belcher has a good future ahead of him if he keeps at it. I challenge anyone to disagree with me.

His command of vocabulary is topnotch (and even better than most of his contemperaries), and his use of suspense and "what comes next?" is superb.

Karen Tracy, Ph.D. and professor of communication at the University of Colorado, Boulder, has done an extensive analysis of academic colloquia at two U.S. universities. The study uses discourse analytic methods to illustrate dilemmas of academic talk that arise between participants: senior faculty, junior faculty, and graduate students. As a graduate student myself, I found that Tracy's interview data and detailed analysis of talk at colloquia very much match my own difficulties in contributing to intellectual discussion: do I contribute now? How should I phrase my question to a senior faculty member? Is it appropriate for me to challenge someone's work since I'm of novice status in this community? Tracy's analysis brings these dilemmas to light and not only describes them in detail, but shows how intellectual discussion might be restructured to manage the conversational dilemmas. It will be an important book in discourse analysis, communication, sociology, psychology, and education, and scholars and students in these communities are likely to find it helpful, not only for the content, but for the way Tracy makes it look so easy to do discourse research
