Helping Someone with Mental Illness: The Newest Advances in Research and Treatment
Published in Hardcover by Times Books (May, 1998)
Author: Rosalynn Carter
Amazon base price: $24.00
Rosalynn Carter's "Helping Someone with Mental Illness" is a powerful tool that anyone--families, social workers, doctors, consumers--can put to good use. There are other such books on the shelf, such as Surviving Schizophrenia: A Family Manual, but Carter's is by far the best. She has managed to weave the deeply moving stories of many individuals into a cleanly organized discussion of every salient issue: diagnosis, treatment, scientific research, stigma, advocacy. Her descriptions of the different mental illnesses--schizophrenia, depression, manic-depression or bipolar illness, and the anxiety disorders--are particularly cogent, and her 20-page list of references is alone worth the price of the book.

Carter never sugarcoats a hard truth or omits a painful statistic, but somehow her voice--warmly personal but also respectfully reserved--comes through so strongly that it is almost as if she is in the room with the reader. Coauthor Susan K. Golant, whom Carter thanks for her organizational skills--among other things--has done her work in a particularly unobtrusive way. This is much more than a book; it is a companion.

Reading Carter on mental illness is like reading Dr. Spock on child care. Having advocated for the mentally ill for most of her adult life, she is an acknowledged expert by now, and she writes with the authority one might expect. But her special status as a mother also subtly informs her text. Discussing caregiver burnout, she writes, "Having dinner at 6:00 p.m. each evening, going to church every Sunday, or watching a favorite TV show every day are all simple ways of maintaining a sense of control. Routines can create structure and a feeling of safety." Readers will be particularly grateful for Carter's constant, explicit suggestions for beating the stigma that often surrounds mental illness. Perhaps no book can be perfect--Carter writes little about post- traumatic stress disorder, a common affliction--but Helping Someone with Mental Illness comes very, very close. --Peggy Moorman

Very Educational
This was one book I did not hesitate to buy as I know so many people with the mental illnesses.

I must applaud Rosalyn Carter one of the former First Ladies for her help in understanding Mental Illness and for trying her utmost not to see it as a stigma in this twenty first century......but for us to learn that getting help is the priority here.

From Depression to Panic attacks......Paranoia to Schizophrenia, caregiving with lots of love and understanding can go a long way. Buy this book to assist you if not now, sometime in the Autumn-time when friends and love ones will be taken under that dark umbrella. The treatments for each mental illness is remarkable.Thank you Roslyn Carter with help from Susan K. Golnat for a book that's going to help millions.
Congratulations.

A caring and compassionate work
The former First Lady's book is a very compassionate effort which can help a person who has to deal with mental illness for the first time no matter what the setting. Mrs. Carter gives a good over-view of the "whole picture" concerning all mental illness with enough detail to give the reader a good foundation in the subject. I think the really profound thing that I read in every line of the book was the real sincerity that Mrs. Carter has for her work. She really is serious about changing the way some in society look at individuals with mental illesses. I applaud her for her work and her book.

facing the difficult challenge
An excellent resource for family members and friends who wish to help a person with mental illness. I especially appreciated the book's emphasis on biological *and* social risk factors for various forms of mental illness.

The section on building resiliancy in children at risk for mental illness is reason alone to purchase this book. It is a wise, compassionate, humane treatus on a very important topic.

A Singular book
Curran's "In Advance of the Landing..." is a singular book that explores the mythological basis of the UFO phenomenon. Less concerned with the 'proof' of whether or not UFOs exist, Curran sets out to show that the impact of the belief in flying saucers and extraterrestrials (all of them much more clever and wise than mere earthlings) is pervasive and sits entirely within the continuum of Judea-Christianity beliefs.
A revised mythology for a new technological age is beautifully rendered through Curran's photographs and words.

One of my all-time favorites!
I've read virtually every UFO book that's come out over the past 40+ years, and this remains one of my all-time favorites. I have the original softbound edition, which has become a cult classic and now goes for something like $100. This is more of a sociological document than a UFO book. It perfectly captures the entire spectrum of quirky characters involved in the UFO field, and the photographs are an absolute hoot. I return to this book time and again just for a laugh and to remind myself that there are nuttier people in the UFO field than me. There's nothing condescending about the authors' treatment of their subjects, however. They obviously have a genuine fondness for them -- and you will, too. This is a "must have" for anyone with an interest in UFOs.

A wondrous, kind-hearted compendium of modern seekers
In 1983, as my wife Fayaway and I were travelling through Patagonia, I met a man with a penetrating but pleasant gaze, and an inviting grin, in a small village in the middle of the pampas. We shared a table and conversation for an afternoon, discussing a variety of subjects of common interests. I was myself in Argentina on business about which I was rather reticent to speak: my wife and I were travelling to Lago Lacar in the Andes foothills, following reports of a plesiosaur-like creature, which I then believed (and believe still) to be a gigantic species of the long-necked protozoan _Trachelophyllum_ (Kudo, 1966). I was, however, rather shy about admitting to holding such seemingly daft ideas at the time, but the gentleman had such a convincing and genuine air, such a gentle and open manner, that I soon told him my entire plan, and of my hopes of capturing and naming the creature _Trachelophyllum fayawayi,_ after my wife and companion on this and many other journeys. He never laughed at me, never let slip any hint that he considered my dreams to be less than rational, less than realistic.

Thus do I imagine Douglas Curran, the author of _In Advance of the Landing: Folk Concepts of Outer Space_. Judging from the material in this book, he has a way of drawing people out to discuss their dreams and hopes about outer space and extraterrestrials. These stories reveal individuals who hold that humanity's salvation or doom might live in outer space, and that flying saucers are the craft of any number of entities: angels, devils, saviours or invaders. A skeptic might see these folk as possessed by an obsession, but Curran views them as adherents to a variety of new religions, all taking their cosmogonies from the outer dark. Most of these people find hope and salvation in that darkness. Though it is difficult to pick a favorite, I think that the book's representative figure is John Reeves, the gentleman who was taken on a trip in a flying saucer to Venus, and who subsequently erected an obelisk marking the spot where the spacecraft landed. Those readers concerned only with scientific truth might laugh at such a narrative, but Curran's portrait reveals a man full of conviction and dedication to the cause of informing the world about visitors from outer space. The book is full of such unique individuals, all convinced completely of their own particular truths. Curran's journey across Canada and the United States produced a wide variety of charming, fascinating, and unique portraits of adherents to their a new mythology for the Space Age.

Though Mr. Curran would probably deny it, one of the most interesting characters in this work is the author himself. Driven by curiosity and a sense of adventure, he set out on a glorified road trip to discover what people thought about outer space. In doing so, he came to believe that humans need order and hope, and that many of us look to the stars for these normalizing abstractions. It would be interesting to see what sort of book Curran would produce today, now that alien abductions have replaced hopeful messages from space angels as the most common UFO event. Perhaps Curran could not write such a book, since the most important elements in his character seem to be hope and joy, ideas which are rare in the abduction phase of our vision of outer space. There is a real need for voices like Douglas Curran's, and I hope that this book comes back into print soon.

Dr. Francis Rises To The Top with this book
It is always nice to find a book which does what it sets out to do. It's even better to find one which not only accomplishes it's goal, but does it well. This book does it very well! In a clear, yet informative manner, this book provides the reader with insight into the issues faced by women in family businesses. Then, it helps the reader move from understanding to practice, in a way which is quite accessible. This book is particularly relevant to women in family owned businesses, but is also a useful text for anyone working in, or with people working in, family owned businesses. I highly recommend it.

AN INDISPENSABLE TEXT!
I bought this book because I am interested in all facets of the business world. To my great enjoyment, I found it to be an excellent glimpse into business from a new and unique angle. It is an indispensable text for women and men alike.

A compass for women in business
This book, the first of its kind, is a no-nonsense compass for women in business and the consultants and therapists who work to help women succeed. Excellent!

The latest in Forensic Anthropology
This book does not contain a full overview of forensic anthropology, as a result it can't be used as an introduction text. However, it deals in depth with certain topics in forensic anthropology, which makes it perfect for advanced students in this field.

Cuts Straight To the Bone...
This is probably one of the best textbooks available on identifying human remains. I have found it to be fascinating reading plus I recently had the honor to meet Dr. Reichs. She most graciously took the time to autograph my copy of the book although she did mention that was the first time anyone had asked her to do so.

Forensic Osteology (Reichs)
This book was given to me as a gift and it is probably the most indepth book I own for the identification process. Little did the gift-giver know that the chapter Reichs includes on Human Rights is extraordinary, and is paramount in showing how Forensic Anthropology has grown over the years to include the aspect of international affairs and the impact human rights play in the field of forensic anthropology. I especially enjoyed the section on Trauma Analysis and Race identification, the latter in being that there have recently been questions as to the accuracy of the tools used to determine race albeit it has often generated controversy. Reich's has a host of contributors, each unique in their field who go in depth to examine traditional techniques and specialized methodologies which result in an exceptional book. I give it five stars and a high recommendation to add to any collection.

The Aconceptual Mind: Heideggerian Themes in Holistic Naturalism (Advances in Consciousness Research, Vol 11)

Authors: Pauli Pylkko and Paul Pylkko
Amazon base price: $49.95
Collectible price: $85.00
Average review score:

A radical and highly important book
The earlier reviews fail to do justice to the depth and importance of this work. Pylkko's notion of aconceptuality, of nondogmatic, anomalous, or a-onto-theo-logical naturalism is highly complex, poetic, brilliant, relevant. It goes entirely against the standard ("dogmatic") scientific positions, although he does see quantum theory as harboring the possibility of moving beyond such dogmatic naturalism.
Just what all this means simply cannot be summarized. One needs not to read, but slowly and carefully study, this rich work itself.

Well written combo of abstract Martin & grounded cogsci.
Pauli engaging, converstional writing style makes the application of Heidegger's toughest themes to current cognitive science research clear and exciting.

A very controversial book!
This is a very controversial book, one which is not frightened to deal with some of the mind blowing consequences of holistic naturalism and quantum theory. The most controversial chapter deals with Fascism. Pylkko blows open wide the present debate on whether or not Martin Heidegger was a Fascist - a point that Pylkko says is obvious - by asking us not to simply re-review Heidegger's writings but asking us moreover to ask what Fascism REALLY is. For Pylkko, Fascism isn't merely about anti-semiticism and war-mongering - although they were 2 of its later consequences - but about a radical conceptual relativism! In a word, cultures can't ultimately understand one another; and this is more complex than Wittgenstein's notion of "forms of life", according to which one needs to understand the lifeworld of people not just their language. But the driving force behind Pylkko's argument isn't mere opinion, or yet more phenomenology, but a scientific view, a sort of meta! physics, or ultimately anti-metaphysics, based upon notions within the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum theory.

New Age bookstores are full of shelves devoted to developing social models derived from quantum physics, but Pylkko's book is the only book on this issue which is based upon a highly sophisticated philosophical argument. I highly recommend this book.

An excellent reference
I have used this book in two separate research presentations and it remains an invaluable library reference. Even the beginning forensic explosives researcher can glean surface information on the categorization and analysis of explosives and residues. The price is indeed steep; obviously, it would best fit into a library utilized by many people.

well
A person who wants to know about detecting explosive

Oh my god!
Who in their right mind would pay that much money for a dumb book

Dr. Scott Fehr has done it again!
Dr. Scott Fehr has done it again! Brilliantly written and skillfully crafted, his breadth of knowledge, keen insight, and experience permeate from every page. Introduction to Group Therapy is the most comprehensive and practical guide on the subject of group therapy. A must have for aspiring and seasoned clinicians.

Bravo Dr. Fehr
Dr. Fehr never disappoints. His down-to-earth, no nonsense approach makes his knowledge and experience extremely accessible, not only to students and professionals, but for anyone with a keen interest in understanding human behavior. His honesty is as refreshing as his insights are brilliant.
What's not to recommend!!!!

Clarity where clarity is sorely needed.
Every once in awhile, a book comes along in our field that sheds new light on an important topic in a clear, understandable manner without diluting the information. Dr. Fehr's practical guide to group is one such example. He has provided something for everyone, from the beginning group therapist to the experienced clinician. His real life vignettes highlight technical aspects of conducting group therapy, provide the reader with often poignant, sometimes funny, and highly illustrative examples of various group phenomena, and bring to life what too often in our field is dryly presented. Dr. Fehr's communiction style challenges us, makes us laugh, take pause, reflect, and ultimately come away feeling revitalized in our work with groups. His review of the history of group therapy is the most compelling I have ever read. A must read for graduate students and senior group therapists alike.

Nonfiction Book Proposals Anybody Can Write: How to Get a Contract and Advance Before Writing Your Book

I know: we all want to write a Great Novel. But in the meantime, don't you have a few terrific ideas for a nonfiction book, too? The subtitle of this book is "How to Get a Contract and an Advance Before Writing Your Book." Doesn't THAT sound better than competing with John Grisham and Tom Clancy? Eighty-five percent of all new titles are nonfiction. So dust off those memoirs, dig up those recipes of Aunt Edna's. Lyon takes you step by step through the process of how to discover and pitch your nonfiction book idea to the best market.
Average review score:

If you want your non-fiction book published devour this book
If you are interested in receiving an advance or contract before you write your nonfiction book, then Elizabeth Lyon's Nonfiction Book Proposals Anybody Can Write is a bookshelf-must you will treasure! Lyon has demystified the process of writing proposals in simple How-Why-What steps. An editor, writing instructor, and "book doctor" she wrote this best-seller after observing her students and clients struggle to understand the basic steps of proposals. Her book is organized in order of reader need, packed with practical and easy-to-use information and interwoven with examples of proposals. Peppered with chapter goals, it will keep you in writer's mode until your book is assembled, polished and ready to market. The recipe in this book gives you the tools to be taken seriously by the publishing world. "Elizabeth Lyon knows proposals the way a surgeon knows anatomy" best-selling author Gary Provost. "You helped me create a tightly written, well-organized, and great-looking book proposal from concept statement to appendix" Bill Buzenborg V.P. of National Public Radio's Morning Edition and All Things Considered.

This really is the best advice for writers
As a literary agent, I endorse this book and recommend it to my clients who are working on nonfiction book proposals because, in my view, it is the most thorough and clear book on the subject. A number of the titles listed on E. Lyon's website are books I represented and sold. They were developed following these guidelines. It is one thing to tell a writer to develop "a great hook" or "write a strong concept statement" and quite another to actually explain what these things are and why they are needed. It is important for the writer to understand the purpose of each piece of a proposal and how it will be used by the agent and editor to grasp why the approaches explained in this book are so valuable. Beyond having a strong salable subject and good writing skills (or a good co-author or ghostwriter), in today's publishing world even smaller publishers want to see a solid marketing plan and publicity ideas. Elizabeth provides guidance to develop one. There are quite a few books on this subject offering a broad range of expertise, but this one is the best. As someone else pointed out, the errors in the previous edition were the responsibility of the original small press-- a reminder that many things like title and cover design and certainly page layouts are not left up to the author! Natasha Kern

The Best of its Kind
Elizabeth Lyon has identified a need and then filled it, with "Nonfiction Book Proposals Anybody Can Write." She states clearly in the introduction that she noticed there were no good resources available to writers who wanted to craft a nonfiction book, so she set to researching the topic and this is the result. I understand this is the second pressing of the book, as the first contained many publishing errors (table of content errors, pagination errors, etc.). These are all corrected in the current edition.

The book delivers what it promises. Lyon simplifies the process of writing the book proposal to its individual parts and provides an outline for anyone wanting to write a nonfiction work on any topic. She tells you exactly what editors will be looking for and outlines how to give it to them. Some of the major points of surprise to me were... 1) A nonfiction publisher actually prefers a proposal to a completed work, and 2) the editor will expect you to have researched the market and identified the need for the book you are writing.

If you are tinkering with the idea of writing a nonfiction book, you need Lyon's manual on how do it. She will save you an inestimable amount of work on the front end, and show you the steps to take to have success your first time out.

If you want to know why it is so difficult for presidents to keep their pants zipped, buy this book. It's not all about power. Some of it's about being just plain crazy.

Union mysteries explained, take a number machines exploited
Fericano breaks down how horrible union work is in his classic One Minute President. His views on the way our country should run are spectacualar. More people should write moving books like this.

A brilliant satire on leadership and politics in America. .
The One Minute President is a political satire for our times. It not only sets the record straight about what the Reagan administration did to further the cause of buffoonery, but it's a primer for anyone who wants to learn the ropes about what it takes to be a successful leader. Brilliantly parodying the successful One Minute Manager bestseller, the One Minute President is a real classic and an excellent read.
