An excellent book for those who know some calculus already.

I teach a course for junior-high and high-school teachers of mathematics, who are getting advanced degrees--either their masters' degree or what Alabama calls an advanced certificate. These students have all had calculus at one time or another, but it may have been a long time ago for some of them. If they haven't been teaching the subject -- and most haven't -- then it's likely that they have forgotten most of it.

This book is ideal for this particular population. It takes a highly graphical approach; almost every unit calls for some graphing work. Moreover, it asks students to interpret the graphs in physical or real-life terms. Then the unit asks the students to match up the verbal descriptions with the graphs.

The book is divided into short units of three or four pages each. Each unit is intended to present some short project that is designed to help the students gain a better understanding of some topic in calculus. For instance, there are several units that show graphs of functions and graphs of derivatives and ask for matches. Later on, there is a unit that asks students to look at the derivative of 2 to the x power -- using the definition of derivative as a limit. The unit then helps students to understand why the base e= 2.71828... is easier to use. At the end of the book there are longer projects for the students to do. There is also a nicely wry sense of humor that pervades the book.

I wouldn't use this book as a *textbook* for a college calculus course; it is designed to be used as supplementary material. I also couldn't use it very effectively in our regular engineering calculus course. For one thing, our course at the University of Alabama has too jam-packed a syllabus -- I always have trouble finishing the assigned topics, much less any extra things. However, with the class of high-school teachers I can be more relaxed. Many of these students remember at least a bit of calculus, but they, too, probably learned it in a course where every topic was covered at breakneck speed. Very likely, they didn't spend enough time on their own to get the clear understanding that a math teacher ought to have. In this course, we have enough time to talk about *interpreting* graphs, limits, derivatives and integrals instead of just manipulating them. This book is excellent for gaining that kind of experience. I usually split the students up into groups and let them present most of the topics in ways that they might use in their own classrooms. I'll usually present some of the harder topics; for instance, I may give an hour lecture on why some elementary functions don't have elementary antiderivatives, and how we could prove such a thing. (This topic is not in the book under review.) If you teach a calculus course whose syllabus isn't already bursting at the seams, you ought to look at this book for ideas for supplementary topics. It's well-thought out and nicely presented.

This book taught me everything I know...about canoeing, anyway.

In 1999 and 2000--as a young, adventure-crazed hippy--I spent six-and-a-half months circumnavigating the entire 1,960-miles shoreline of Lake Powell, in Utah and Arizona, in a beat-up Old Town-Tripper. I canoed the shores of every river arm, every bay, every canyon, and every cove. I lived mainly on brown rice, experienced terrifying waves and windstorms, spent weeks of the winter in crushing solitude, and months of the summer dodging drunken jet-skiers.
For over six months, canoeing was my life, and this book was my only instructor. I had no clue what I was doing, but in a matter of days, studying this book and following its advice, I was able to meet every challenge nature could offer.
My next planned trip is a long kayak paddle along the entire chain of Aleutian Islands...and I'll be taking a Laurie Gullion book with me then, as well. Probably her book on coastal sea kayaking--and next time I'll practice more.
If you're interested in canoeing, get this book. It will tell you all the basic strokes you need to know, and give you good advice on safety and equipment.

Good for Basic filters, Well Written, And Easy to Understand

I have read a another book from this author, but find this one to be most comprehensive and easy to understand. Saying that, I wish more authors take notice to the structure, and presentation of his technical series books that he has written for continuing education. I find this book to be a treasure of good mathamatic formulas for designing higher order filters.Among that, his experiments inside the book complete each chapter in describing active filters for each example given in the book. Even though this title is out of print, I can tell that some of the best books written, not just for active filters, but for electronics engineering have been out of print for many years. So for anyone interested in designing active filters, this book is exceptionally good, and easy to understand from cover to cover.

Embracing Change
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-17
In this book, Tony Buzan, as usual, reiterates his favourite techniques like Mind Maps, TEFCAS, Radian Thinking, etc. If you've read other books by Tony Buzan, you may find parts of this book monotonous, uninteresting and not engaging readers' interest. However, there were valuable thought worth consideration in the other parts of the book.

Everything changes around us. According to Darwin, neither the strongest nor the smartest species will survive but that will be able to adapt to the changes of the environment. If we resist changing, we will be at a loss. Procrastination is a form of resistance to change. The body may be the first thing that we postpone taking care of. If we are unfit and our nourishment is poor, all our energy levels will slide. We will become stagnant: in the sense of becoming unmoving, unchanging, our changing towards becoming more unchanging! A body that is stagnant will eventually corrupt itself, It will disrupt the immune system, lose its ability to self-heal, will have no freedom of will, no ability to act to preserve its goal and its ability to change.

"I can't afford to" is the common cry is often used to explain why action is impossible. Money is often seen as a reason or used as an excuse for not being able to change; for remaining stuck in a job, a relationship, a home that you prefer to leave. In fact, them main capital for bringing about change is not financial capital; it is intellectual capital: your thoughts, your will, your knowledge, your determination. By automatically saying the words "I can't afford it" your brain stops working. By asking the question "How can I afford it?" your brain is put to work, and you are becoming to change.

Consider a tree while you are at the center, with branches that represent basic categories such as Home, Friends, Love and Sex, Family, Children, Work, Hobbies, Creativity, Finances, Health and Fitness, Spirit, or others, that suit your needs. To maintain healthy balance it is essential that throughout periods of time where the emphasis of your life changes you keep the overall balance stable. As once branch of your life grows (e.g. Work), take care to keep the other basic branches strong also, so you do not neglect the roots of your stability that nourish your ongoing growth.

Please consider reading books by Margaret J. Wheatley in addition to this book. She writes much about change. "Our old views constrain us. They deprive us from engaging fully with this universe of potentials", she writes.

I just wanted to say that it's a shame that someone would take advantage of people like this seller is. I am quite sure that Pastor Bob Coy would be outraged at the pricing on this item. Two hundred dollars for a 6cd sermon? Am I missing something here? You ought to be ashamed.
