Historical Lessons of Marginal Practical Value
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-12
When I purchased this book, I went in with my eyes open knowing that it is a collection of campfire stories and old "best way" methods. I had hoped, though, that I would gain a little insight into some practical tips and suggestions for today's nature enthusiast. And though there were some, there were very few. The redundancy and laughable suggestions (use a 8'- 10' fishing pole for pike; the best fishing poles are bamboo) eroded the practical application of the remaining insights. So if you're looking for a lesson in firearms (35% of content) or entertainment of how things used to be done before technology entered the outdoor world, the book has real value. If you're looking for tips and suggestions on how to survive in the bush or to support a true roughing-it camping experience, look elsewhere.

This is like owning your grandfather's Boy Scout handbook.

Everything's in this book, from two pages on how to predict the weather without a weatherman to how fast a duck flies to how to build a campfire. A worthy addition to a man's library.

Classic stuff for all outdoorsmen - and outdoorswomen.

Some people may say that the practical things in this book are out of date. I completely disagree. While the technology of camping and fishing has changed, the basic things haven't and that's where this book shines. One of my favorite books is Buzacott's "Sportsman's Encyclopedia" and there are plenty of selections in here from that book, along with bits and pieces from other old-timers' books I've never seen but wish I had! If you want all the latest on outdoors gadgetry, go someplace else. But if you want what really works and what's tried-and-true, then this is the book for you.

Get off the dieting failure treadmill forever!
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 2006-10-20
I saw Dr. Yavari on CNN and knew right away that he could help me with my medical problems. I bought his book and discovered new information on problems I had dealt with all of my life. I made a life-changing decision to move to Connecticut from California to go to Dr. Yavari's clinic. His program as described in this book has changed the course of my life. I have lost weight and am close to being free from insulin dependence. I hope that other over-40 women and diabetics who are battling stubborn weight gain, particularly in the stomach, will take advantage of this book and finally find relief.

Current medical coverage on television and the Internet supports the newly-discovered existence of metabolic syndrome where excess body fat causes diabetes and heart disease. Cross-talk between fat cells, appetite and stress centers in the brain and metabolism are discussed in an easily comprehensible style for the lay person. Both Parts I and II of the book have plenty of material on meal planning, food choices and exercise. You will learn why stress reduction is so important, why skipping meals or crash dieting shuts down your metabolism and why abdominal fat accumulates because of changes in your hormones. Do yourself a favor and become an advocate of this system. I and other patients of Dr. Yavari are living proof that it's not "our fault" and that there really is a way out of the "repeated failure" system of dieting. Good luck!

I found this book incredibly helpful for I finally understand why the fad diets just don't work. This book is not just another diet book nor is it a weight loss book; so don't expect to find weight loss tricks here and there. I have used this book as part of the program offered at the Doctor's center in Connecticut. For the first time in my life I am losing weight while I am eating plenty of healthy foods. I feel satisfied, calm, and much happier, plus I am exercising and enjoying it too! I feel great and have more energy than ever. The best part is that my health has dramatically improved. Finally, I am learning that it is not about dieting as much as it is about my lifestyle that needs to change to maintain good health.

I personally found the discussion of how stress and fad dieting can cause weight gain very insightful. The book also has excellent and easy to read chapters on metabolic syndrome, a pre-diabetes state that causes heart disease and full blown diabetes if not reversed. The recipes, meal plan and the six-month clinical program in part II of the book are the same as the plan I have followed at Dr. Yavari's center. I recommend this great book to anyone who is tired of fad diets and is interested in living a healthy lifestyle while preventing diabetes

Overall, the book is full of not so interesting background information rather than useful tip for weight loss. I travel 100% of the work week. I live in hotels and eat in restuarants except for the weekends. This book was not particularly helpful to me.

Trail and camp tested recipes

I have made quite a few of the recipes out of this book, and they were all great! More than just recipes, the book inspires you to think creatively about what food you can actually take and make while camping.

The most valuable part of the book is the product reviews; the recipes, however, have little or nothing to do with the products or with "baking on boat and trail." I mean, I don't know about you, but I don't need a recipe that makes 3 loaves of bread when I'm camping. The product reviews are available on line; save your money.

Comprehensive and easy to read, this book explains the various techniques and equipment available for camp baking, and gives wonderful recipes. The Chinese steamed dumplings were a revelation on our trip, and we *loved* the fresh bread. If you're a cook who camps, you need this book.

This textbook is quite easy to read. From chapter to chapter it flows very easily. I hope this book sticks around in the college system text requirements for the next semester's students.

This book uses humor and slang to present the points needed for Human Communication and the classes it is used for. Between using quotes and comics (Calvin & Hobbes, especially), the points come across, as well as a chuckle here and there.

I can see quite clearly what Sam Cook is aspiring to here and that is the only reason I gave even two stars. In my opinion he fails to evoke the true feeling of this wonderful part of the country. He also has the irritating habit of refering to himself as "he" or "the man". People interested in the north woods will be better served by reading Sigurd Olson.

Great to bring on trips and read the stories.

Sorry, but I just can't think of much nice to say about this book. It's a little bizarre (lemons? lemon land?), and tries to be too many things to many categories of special needs kids.

My son actually got up and walked out of the room on it.

The two other books I bought were way better: "Eagle Eyes" and "Shelly the Hyperactive Turtle".

Writers take note, there's more room on the market for quality kids' books about ADD.

Don't assume it is ADHD

My neighbor's child was overly active and went the route of ADHD drugs which didn't help at all. They finally did a complete (I mean really complete) physical and found out he has blood sugar problems causing the swings in behavior. Now that his blood sugar is keep under control, he is a different child.

This book rightfully doesn't label the child and even suggests finding the cause of the behaviors by getting help from the school psychologist and the teacher. It also suggests a memory cue to help. It points out the need for a well balanced diet too. This child in the book might have ADD, ADHD, behavior problems, blood sugar problems, etc.

The book is more useful if it is used with Little Lemon: Activities for Developing Motivation and Memory Skills. The choice of the lemon puppets makes more sense that way than just reading the sequel (this book). The book about memory skills has many practical suggestions, discussion questions, and there are more on the author's website. The site is listed at the end of both books. You can type Learning Abilities Books into a search engine to find the site.

This book is right on target for helping overly active children to gain self-control. It is a realistic memory cue that fits naturally into the story line. Other help is also given. The discussion questions help the overly active child and they help his or her peers. They talk about nicknames, helping others, and other things that help parents and teachers with a good discussion. I'm glad they do not use words like ADHD. Overly active children can be that way for lots of reasons besides ADHD.

Firstly, I wish there was a way to give a 4.5 stars than just making integer assignments. Anyways, I like this book a lot. I am quite familiar with the work of the authors (at least from a few of the papers that they have in sound and vibration journals). One thing that impresses me a lot of this book is that, it is very nicely written and is easy to understand. They have tons of references to excite any reader. There are a few minor glitches sometimes in the equations (e.g., a minus instead of a plus sign in the exponents, etc.), but nothing the reader can't figure out easily. The coverage of each of their chapters is substantial and you never feel that you are left hanging midway. They give a good amount of basics of DSP/filtering early on to understand the subsequent chapters well. It would be nice if they had a background chapter discussing passive techniques (and their shortcomings). I would strongly recommend this book to people who are interested in sound field/noise control.

This book covers a broad range of Networking Security. Topics that are generally overlooked in most cases. This book is very general in terms of Overall network security and makes you take a step back and review your security procedures and policies. Easy to understand and follow. A great reference guide to go back to also. The reason I gave this book 4 instead of 5 stars is because I feel that a few of the topics should've been covered a little more deeply. A few topics that were covered left me with an incomplete feeling. Like I need to learn more about it. I guess that's what guides usually do. It's a compromise between buying a book that covers one subject/topic very well or something that enlightens you to all subjects/topics that you may have overlooked. All in all.. Great Book. I would buy it again if I lost this copy.
