I loved it. I have referred to it many, many time for my sled dogs' problems, and it is a great source of information. It covers just about everything you need to know for mushing, choosing a dog, making supplies, running them, etc. I would reccomend it to anyone who is an experienced musher or a beginner.

Dog Driver by Miki and Julie Collins is a book all who have ever wanted to drive a team, who are driving a team, or who have drove a team should have. It has something for everyone.

While considered a 'beginners bible' it has much to offer the established dog driver. Any dog drivers who feel that they dont need it are the ones who do need it.

The Collins Twins are probably the two best known dog mushers in Alaska who arenot on one of the competitive racing circuits, they are known for their competence and ability in getting a dog team from point A to point B . This book is a distillation of their experiences in a wide range of situations, and they have presented it in a clear and straight-forward manner.

They cover the topics in a thorough and effective manner, from getting started to trekking and racing. If sled dogs are your interest, you will want this book.

This is an excellent book for beginners as well as professional. It is the most detailed and updated book on the market. Covering finding the right dog, proper gear and how to use it (detailed photos) quality of food, daily care, medical needs, breeding, training, recreational, distance and sprint racing. I reccommend it to ALL beginner mushers.

Although the title implies that the book is for the "serious musher", it should properly read "any musher". Topics include nutrition, training, health care, distance and sprint racing, camping, breeding, buying, skijoring, etc. Each is dealt with in a practical and understandable manner.

A great book for a horse owner

Review Date: 2007-12-27
This book was very much what my wife and I were looking for. My wife has years of horse experience but that doesn't mean she knows exactly the very best practices to follow in every emergency.

The book is organized by emergency and then details the situation, what you should be looking for, what different symptoms mean, what a Vet would do, what is important to the vet and then what you should do since you are not a vet. This is great because the focus is on full understanding and not making any mistakes that might make the situation worse and setting things up so when you do get to a vet (remember these are genuine emergencies) the vet will be best able to deal with it and have the best chance for a successful outcome. This includes things like the important information and proper terminology you are going to need to tell the vet on the phone. Things to look at and take note of before time passes or you start tending the problem so you can relate that to the vet as well.

The week I ordered this book our horse stepped on a nail and embedded it in his hoof. We didn't have the book yet so my wife and the folks at the barn where she stables her horse dealt with it as best they knew how. Luckily they did know the best way to handle things and everything turned out great.

They had a chance to have lots of interaction with the Vet about the incident and when the book arrived we looked at the section on stepping on something. Sure enough it was clear the book would have helped a good deal. It explained what our vet would have done and the vet had already confirmed the good and not so good that they had done as they dealt with it and it matched up exactly with what Dr. Hayes said in her book.

It make us feel a lot better that we will be able to deal with Emergencies properly should they occur. At least we will be able to deal with them in the very best way to help ensure a good outcome when we do get to the vet.

We found this book because Karen Hayes has a great horse medicine and horse keeping podcast on her personal website (http://www.integralhorse.com/). She gives great sensible advice on all aspects of horse keeping and horse health. After listening to a few dozen of those podcasts it became pretty clear she was a vet we could trust and buying her book was a no brianer. Listen for yourself and then see what I mean, I bet you will end up buying a few of her books. Even if you don't you probably can't help but learn a few things from her podcasts no matter how experienced you are.

I have quite a few "Horse" books. Many of them are medical references but give very little practical advice. This is the one book that gives practical, concise information on what to do specifically in emergencies. It is thoughtful and easily read. It is the best book I have ever read for actually useful information concerning medical problems with horses. It walks a great line between making sure that you understand that vets are still required, but that if you are somewhere you can't get to a vet, what to do. The author has a wonderful sense of humor and a no-nonsense approach. I highly recommend it to any horse owner. Keep this book in your trailer at all times!!

Most useful first aid for horses

What makes this book unique is the step by step walk-through of some typical horse emergency scenarios. And if you're around horses long enough sooner or later you'll be faced with a horse emergency--since horses usually live much further from their vets than city-dwelling pets, it's good if their handlers are well-prepared. It's a very readable format--I'd suggest reading it thoroughly ahead of time, get the recommended veterinary items together, and then get the book out again once or twice a year to keep fresh. Think of it as a course in first aid for your horse.

This book has revolutionized my teaching procedures. Bean shows us how to be more effective teachers without adding to the time we spend prepping and grading. The students are more engaged and writing better essays, and I am spending the same or less time preparing and grading. There are tips on everything from in-class exercises to constructing formal writing assignments. I recommend it to anyone teaching composition or any class with a critical thinking/writing component.

Excellent practical advice for the college teacher

Professor Bean provides the theory behind his recommendations but, as any teacher who has delved into this literature knows, theories about effective teaching aren't in themselves necessarily very helpful. What one needs is practical advice, and this book has it---lots of it. Bean identifies different writing activities for students; shows how to design tasks for active thinking and learning in the classroom; suggests effective ways to make use of small group discussion in the classroom; explains ways to increase active learning in a lecture course; discusses the mechanics of grading papers; and shows how to enhance learning in essay exams. Even for the experienced teacher, there's a good deal of worthwhile material here, and it's cogently presented. A highly recommended book for the professor who wants to increase active learning in the classroom and get more out of a lecture course.

John C. Bean presents a thorough, logical discussion covering issues that (may seem basic) but that I for one, still struggle with - successfully integrating critical thinking writing assignments into my courses.

Bean blends relevant research and studies to explain and justify what works and what fizzles. His text offers strategies and assignments - from short, informal writings to involved research projects. His work considers learning styles - (students and instructors). The author models rich critical thinking and writing - the discourse allows learners to make their own connections and discoveries (while absorbing the valuable resources and information provided) Readers, like students engage in the journey of sense-making.

In sum, this is not just a book of potential exercies - it is a rich resource for instructors grappling with issues of assessment, critiquing, and the fear of grading overload. These topics and more provided me with some wonderful "aha" moments.

It's the "aha"s that spark my spirit of inquiry - and this is what I strive to share with students.

Bean's text is a thoughtful and useful pedagogical "storehouse" of ideas that teachers can use in their classrooms. Not only does the text provide the theory _behind_ collaborative/cooperative approaches to teaching, but it provides such ideas for a wide array of subjects. Anyone who values the teaching of writing--whatever the subject area--will find good value in Bean's text.

I read it a long time after my relationship ended. Somehow I couldn't get over it, because I didn't have any closure at all. And I didn't understand why it had ended the way it ended, and many other things regarding this issue. However the book helped me a lot to understand many things and to focus on myself, on what to do to get past all that emotional nightmare. It also helped me to understand why I was feeling the way I did so long after the breakup. It's an easy read, and it can give you a new perspective of how to mend a broken heart with a few steps to follow.

For those of you going through a breakup this book will surely provide comfort. It is small enough to carry around with you so as to keep you positive during hard moments. It has many wise words of wisdom that are quite enlightening and thought provoking. It does have a Christian base in it but for those of you who are not, this element does not take away from the true value of the work. It is highly recommended.

This book really hits all the right areas that you feel during a breakup. As he said he has been there too. Therefore you can tell that his advice is coming from the heart. I am not a religous person, but this book allows you to explore what beliefs you have and feel the comfort that you are not alone in this battle. Try this book, its inexpensive so you dont have much to lose. The advice is down to earth and put in terms you can relate to. The very exact thoughts that went through my head are described in the book and how you can manage those thoughts. Good luck to all of you. I hope this will help.

When I first got this book, my blood sugar had leveled-out at about 300. I just couldn't lower my blood sugar, no matter how well I ate or how much I exercised. All my doctor could or would do was change my medication and order more tests for me. I didn't have medical insurance and I couldn't afford any more tests, or even doctors' visits; so I stopped seeing my doctor.
In this book, I was firmly advised NOT to exercise until my blood sugar was below 250; otherwise my body would react to the exercise by releasing even more sugar into my blood. After I stopped the exercise my blood sugar did start to slowly drop. I then carefully read the book from cover to cover, and gained a large amount of very useful information.
I also began doing "Tai Chi for Diabetes", which also appears to have helped.
Within a few weeks my blood sugar level dropped below 110. I then discontinued the medication my doctor had given me. For over a week now my blood sugar has been below 107; without taking any pills.
I've read a few other books on Diabetes, and they were all somewhat helpful; but "The Mayo Clinic on Managing Diabetes" was by far the most helpful and informative book I've read on the subject. I strongly recommend it.

This book offers an interesting and completely comprehensible overview of diabetes. It is not a "how-to" book, nor does it pretend to be. Rather, it gives you the background information you need to better understand your care plan that your physician, dietician, and whomever else prepares with you. While there are many other volumes on the subject, I recommend this one as an essential resource for any living with diabetes or a diabetic.

I read this after completing the American Red Cross Standard First Aid and Adult CPR courses. This book assumes some basic first-aid knowledge and takes you to the next step with a deeper level of material, specifically focused on wilderness first aid techniques. Traditional first aid courses and materials like those taught by ARC assume an urban setting where paramedics and hospitals are minutes away. This book is geared toward the care of patients where such help is hours or days away. It covers effective assessment, treatment and evacuation techniques, as well as assessing urgency of evacuation. Included is information on the frequency of various kinds of illness/injuries in the wilderness based upon years of experience at NOLS. In addition to the standard subjects like shock, soft tissue injuries, broken bones, venomous bites & stings, etc., it discusses diagnosis of difficult abdominal symptoms, gender-specific illnesses/injuries, and stress on the rescuer. The illustrations are clear and the text is highly readable. I recommend this book to any serious outdoor enthusiast or leader.

I love this book. The writing style is easy to understand, and carries the reader forward in a natural progression. It's a book that can be read straight through. It has great tutorials on VBScript and SQL (although I wanted more on SQL), and a lot of friendly ASP tutorials. Definitely a great book for the library. It's hard to find everything you need to develop a web application in one book, which is why I give this one 5 stars. I can get quick answers, or read through for more complete understanding. I have a lot of ASP books, but this is my favorite due to its completeness and easy, friendly writing style. I love Kris Jamsa books, and now I'm adding Rob Francis books to my Must Have list.

I have been trying to use PHP -- Francis makes ASP very easy to understand and shows how to integrate key objects to perform complex tasks. PHP even makes more sense now ... but I am going to stick with ASP.

I am not using ASP.NET yet, so I can't comment on that part of the book.

The ASP material is very good and very easy.

This is a great reference book. It is not meant to be read from cover-to-cover, rather each page addresses a topic (eg: encountering a strange dog, swinging, riding the bus, calling 911, request from an adult, just about any situation a child might encounter). It provides a scenario - and you can ask your child what s/he should do, and then turn the page for bullent-points to discuss with your child. When I purchased this book, I thought it might be too old for my oldest (4.5), but in fact she enjoys going thru the various topics.

We went through this book by reading aloud one topic each day. I love the format : each topic presents a safety hazzard; you brainstorm with the children for responses to the danger; then, by turning the page, the appropriate responses are revealed. My young children were really encouraged when they discovered that some of their reponses were right! Note : my 7yo liked the book so much that she read it through by herself after our first reading.

It's got cute illustrations and good information. Parents will need to adjust some of it for their child's specific situation. It is a comprehensive and well rounded book.

Every parent and young child should share this book.

This is a very good book to discuss many safty concerns without the lecture style that kids usually tune out. I feel much more secure about my children's safty since we went through this book togeher. One liked it so much that we went through it twice. The book is divided into seven chapters: At Home, At School and on the Way, At play, Out and About, First Aid, Just for Fun, and Pages for Parents. Each chapter has 12 to 15 sections which cover a specific issue such as "How to Dial 911". The section has one page that has an illustration and a one paragraph description of a situation. Read the paragraph and ask the child what they would do. The child then responds. This is a great way to get to know your child's maturity level, reasoning skills, and common sence. On the second page of the section there is a good discussion of the ideal response to the situation posed on the preceding page. My five year old had no trouble comprehending this and my 11 year old also seemed to be learning some things. AN IMPORTANT NOTE: My five year old didn't sleep well after we did the section titled "Prowler". She had just never thought of such a thing before and it seemed to unnerve her. Also, I liked the common sence response in the "Gun in the House" section. No hysterical political B.S., just leave the area and tell an adult.

In the book, Charles Darwin must convince follicle mites living in his left eyebrow that he is not their creator and that evolution happens. Even though that sounds psycho, Hosler manages to explain the basics of Charles Darwin, evolution, and get in some comments about the dangers of blind faith in an entertaining way. Hosler's drawing style is simple, well done, and was most likely strongly influenced by Herge's Tintin. Even though I'm a geoperson and a high school earth science teacher, The Sandwalk Adventures makes me want to take a couple of Professor Hosler's biology classes!

This is a charming graphic novel featuring aged Charles Darwin, his family, and a family of mites living in his eyebrow. One mite can speak to him, and so Darwin learns of the mites' myth that the Flycatcher(Darwin's nickname aboard the *Beagle*) is their Creator. Darwin must convince Mara and Willy (the mites) that evolution is real. Along the way we see the world through the mites' wild-eyed myths as well as the charming home life of the Darwins at Down House in England.
This is a great introduction to evolution as well as a nice gift. Hosler has done other comics as well. In any case, highly recommended.

Evolution is one of the most exciting stories in the history of our planet. It remains therefore a profound mystery as to why there aren't more graphic novels telling the tale. Hosler writes with a deep knowledge and appreciation of the life of Darwin and the history of evolution. Through the use of the graphic novel format and talking eyebrow follicle mites, Hosler communicates one of the most complex theories in a way that anyone can understand. While at times he moves towards poddy humor, it feels strangely appropriate, and Hosler has a profound discussion in the interplay of pedagogical and storytelling approaches with the basics of the theory of evolution. My only regret would be at times Hosler's arguments are slightly weakened through extraneous attacks on the development of religious beliefs, something certainly needing to be addressed within a discussion of acceptance and rejection of evolution, but Hosler's story tangents too far on this road at times.

I am grateful to Dr. PZ Myers for suggesting this book at speech he gave in Seattle. If you love evolution, read this book. If you don't really understand evolution, read this book, and you'll enjoy yourself, and finally get the basics of the theory. If you're a biology teacher, make this required reading, and enjoy the adulation of your students. If you completely reject the theory of evolution...you will get nothing out of this.
