The book contains good material for learning and is a good reference to go back to again and again. I like that it covers rock as well as snow and ice climbing in one package. Good photos and clear drawings illustrate points.

I have been climbing for 3 days! And I starting looking for good books after my first climb. I've seen this book in person.

The cover on this book makes it look like the perfect resource for climbing. Look at it, it's all right there! I thumbed through this book last night at Barnes and Noble... and I picked two other books that were smaller and, I believe, better for beginners.

I don't think this book is useless. It has lots of good information in it. But I think there are better options for the beginner.

The first book I bought (read) and love is: Rock Climbing (Outdoor Pursuits Series) The second book, that I've only thumbed through so far, but looks perfect is: Rock Climbing : A Trailside Guide (Trailside Guide Series)

I normally don't review against a book, but THE COMPLETE CLIMBERS HANDBOOK struck me when I saw it as having a great cover that was not matched by the contents. Buy what you want, but remember - you can't judge a book by its cover. I would recommend either, or both, the books I finally bought over this one ANY day.

I don't think this book is useless. I'm sure it has great information in it. But I would recomend these other books for a beginner.

Decent look into Fibonacci Trading
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2003-12-20
There are some interesting fibonacci patterns and concepts in this book, but the examples were well chosen and looks great in hindsight. Problems with these types of "line" studies is that if enough lines are drawn on a chart, then sooner or later price will bounce from one of them. My recommendation is to purchase Fibonacci Applications and Strategies for Traders by Fisher. Its a good read and gets to the core concepts. This book is just a variation. Average at best.

Outstanding to the right trader

Blends heavy influence of Dinapoli with some Pesavento and Robert Miner. I did notice he used Dynamic Trader for his charting examples, yet failed to mention a thing about Elliott Wave in his methods. The book is simple to read, very much like a Larry Connors style of book. Presents 8 methods, many of them overlapping each other in theory and setups. Basically, trades off confluences of a particular fib retracement (essentially a Wave 4 retracement) and then gives simple fib targets. A trader would gain the most from this book by having an EW background and then interpreting the setups to incorporate with wave counts. Otherwise, I think a new trader might look too hard for a "higher high" and so forth, just to match the setup.

This book will help you do it. It's amazing to me how many so-called "traders" do not know this information. Mr. Hobbs does an excellent job of presenting the material and even has his own Fib patterns included.

Finding reversals in trading
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2004-01-27
Understanding and applying Fibs to trading is essential to my trading now. Fib numbers help me find likely reversal zones in both day and swing trading. The institutions are programming their computers for the common Fib levels, so the private trader needs to know where these levels are to play off the institutional traders.

Hobbs does a good job of illustrating how Fibonacci can be used to find likely reversals setting up. The interesting thing is that Fibs can be added to almost any trading strategy to make that strategy more powerful. It's one more tool for justifying trading decisions and giving you a little extra edge.

We just returned from a trip to BC where we used this book in conjunction with others. Some of the information is useful, but time and time again we were disappointed, especially in the area of lodging. Several B&Bs and Lodges that were given very positive reviews were either very ordinary, motelish or were just plain dreadful. There is a good reason why these are hidden, and should remain so.

Websites, walking tours, scenic drives, and both weekend and extended getaways are covered in Hidden British Columbia, which specializes in byways and lesser-known attractions and which deserves ongoing recommendation as a top travel choice for the region. From Fan Tan Alley, Canada's narrowest street, to tiny cafes, Hidden British Columbia provides a quality travel experience to any heading to the region, and makes for a perfect tote as well as a at-home planner.

This book was wonderful -- we did a trip along the Yellowhead using it to direct us to lodging and the "hidden" best places -- and the only time we went wrong on our trip was when we didn't consult the book. We're planning another trip this year, because we didn't get to all the places the book directed us to.

BTW -- Louise's Kitchen in Smithers has what may arguably be the best food in Western Canada!

I bought this book without really looking inside of it. The cover was colorful and it was in the journaling section of the bookstore. That seemed like enough to me.

I could have saved myself some money if I'd taken a minute to skim through it. The majority of the book is about picking up things you find on the ground and starting collections with it. She goes on at length about how if you are bored with your surroundings you just aren't looking hard enough. I have to disagree. Sometimes a location is just boring and telling me I'm not trying hard enough isn't going to change that reality.

This book will probably be appreciated by fans of her other books, but for those who aren't familiar with her work, if you are looking for eye candy or deep thoughts, this isn't the place to find it.

How to "Be" Guide for Artists
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2008-11-13
Smith's newest book is the most recent installment in her passionate, ongoing process to distill life and the art process (indistinguishable to most artists) down to it's bare matter. If you can embrace playfulness, open courageously to the idea of art as life, are willing to turn off the television and look around you, love to challenge yourself to learn to BE and create from essence as opposed to trend or fancy, Explorer is for you.

As an author, she seems to live her life exactly the way she writes (as one can easily pick up when visiting her blog The Wish Jar Journal).

As an artist, she is apparently very well read on the subjects of art and life and willing to push beyond art school rules to find her own voice among so many artsy voices that seem to blend together these days. For an insightful, modern perspective on gathering the fodder to create amazing experiences, I was not disappointed with this book.
I completely disagree with other reviews which state that this book is not for deep thinkers. I find her simple, freshened concepts to be timely and revolutionary, just what artists have been missing from our creative processes.
I also recommend Wreck This Journal and Guerilla Art, also by Keri Smith.

Review Date: 2006-06-15
I was taken aback by how convoluted and overreaching this text was. I guess I expected more. I found myself having to read and reread certain paragraphs and sections of this book just to understand what Telford was attempting to say. I found his open hostility toward the traditional position of inerrancy troubling. One reviewer says that Work "shows how the paradigm of inerrancy is fatally flawed." He shows no such thing. He approaches the discussion and falls flat in his efforts. One way to make your point it to denigrate your opponent. This he did do. He seemed to imply that all who believe in inerrancy are lowbrow fundamentalists. Ultimately, Work's overhaul (i.e., paradigm shift) for viewing the Word of God was simply over the top and without warrant. I note that this book came out in November 2001, but I have yet to see Bible colleges and seminaries adopting Work's new paradigm and dialect, and with a sales ranking of 711,096, his book is likely not going to usher in his "new paradigm."

a challenging and thoughtful "work" on Scripture
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 2003-03-09
telford work's first book (originally his doctoral dissertation from his fellowship at duke) rightly challenges the paradigm and dialect used by Christians to speak of their Holy Scriptures. rather than a simple reaction to recent scholarship on the doctrine of the Scripture, work (who modestly insists that his undergraduate students call him by his first name, telford) narrates the Bible's conception, mission, canonization, and ongoing life within the Church through the lens of the history of the Triune God's chosen community. to do this properly, telford work interacts with each of the many stages involved in Scripture's formation, including the beginnings of the Tanakh through the Sepuagint, as well as in the life and formation of Jesus through the post-ascension Church. by locating the use of Scripture in the life of God's Community - what he terms "the gathering" - he shows how the paradigm of inerrancy is fatally flawed. thus, telford fittingly presents a new ontological paradigm for the discussion of Scripture. he works alongside the giants of doctrine, including (but certainly not limited to) athanasius, augustine, barth, and barr. this is a profound and substantial book that will soon become a staple in colleges and seminaries, written by a man who is shaped not simply by ivory towers reaching into the sky, but infinitely more importantly, by the God to Whom such towers unknowingly point.

The book is well-written and edited. Content seems a bit 'thin' in areas (as with a similar book for prep for this exam), but that is probably due to the nature of the exam and its material. The practice exam included with book may be helpful, but there are others that are much better.

The exam covers quite a bit of material and skills, so plan to include other study materials in addition to this book.

Even with its weaknesses the book is a good value.

After reading both this book and the 70-297 Sybex book, there is no comparison. This book does not cover anything that you don't already know if you are on the MCSE track. It seemed to be more written for someone that is just taking this exam... and hasn't studied anything for the other 6 exams in the MCSE track. My advice, spend the extra $ and get the Sybex book by Brad Price... it will be money well spent, and you may actually learn something you don't already know... I know I did!

The previous reviewer doesn't seem to understand the concept of exam cram books. They're written specifically to give you an idea of what's covered on the exam. They shouldn't be compared to $60, 800-page books that go into great detail about every little nuance of the technology. Crams are $30 and overviews. Let's make sure we're comparing apples to apples here. If you want more depth, sure, go buy a $60 book, but don't unfairly criticize a book because it doesn't do what it never claims it's supposed to do in the first place.

I thought the book did a good explaining all the technologies needed to pass the exam. This along with Transcender or some other practice test software you should be ready for the exam. One thing about the book that I found odd - the book ended the last chapter (chapter 10) with this... "In the next chapter, we are going to take a look at how you will implement an efficient IP addressing infrastructure." Huh? My book only had 10 chapters. Maybe Chapter 11 got axed at the last moment??? Poor job of editing whatever the case.

This is a good book, it will get you studying in the right direction. The contents do cover what you will expect in the 70-297 test however I strongly suggest that in addition to this book you use an online test preparation tool (I used Self Test). You will need the practice when facing the verbose (-vv) questions on the test.

So after using this book, Self Test software and lots of studying I squeaked by on my first try!

Amira Hass is a wonderfully perceptive and deeply humane reporter. This book is a collection of her reports from the Occupied Territories, in which we meet individuals who daily experience the humiliations, abuse, violence, frustrations and injustices of living under conditions in which every aspect of their lives is controlled by an occupying military force, while also having to deal with the corruption and injustices of their own civil authorities. Ms Hass spares neither the IDF nor the Palestinian Authority nor the radicals of both sides from criticism, while always revealing the cost of occupation: the lives and dreams of ordinary people shattered, the suffering, the struggles, the anger and yet the human spirit that shows through, hoping and yearning for justice and peace. I was so moved by this book that I bought several copies for friends and asked them to pass them on to their friends after reading it.

No matter where your loyalties lie in the Israel-Palestine conflict, this book will almost surely make you angry. It is a selection 37 articles and op-ed columns written by an Israeli journalist who was during 1997-2002 chief West Bank and Gaza correspondent for one of her country's leading dailies, Ha'aretz. Her observations of life in the occupied territories cover the years following the Oslo accords and the first two years of the second Intifada. As investigative reporting, her stories focus - sometimes in stomach-churning detail - on the collapse of law and order under the boot heel of Israeli security forces, the negligence and corruption of the Palestinian authority under Yasser Arafat, and finally the obsession for revenge among armed resistance fighters, young, undisciplined, and beyond the reach of reason.

While many may justify the heavy-handed actions taken against Palestinians, and carried out by the IDF (Israel Defense Forces), Hass points out over and over the devastating impact on noncombatants - the bulldozing of homes and businesses, the roadblocks, the building of Israeli settlements and the bypass roads for the exclusive use of the settlers, the confiscation of property, the poverty and unemployment, the curfews, the unending disruption of everyday life, the tanks and helicopters, the observation towers, and the "collateral damage" of unarmed civilians wounded and killed.

In one account, a contingent of IDF soldiers invades the apartment of a family to use their home as an observation post for days. In another, the Palestinian Ministry of Culture is taken over by IDF troops for a month, leaving behind not just destruction of its contents but a wasteland of human excrement, urine, and rotting food. A chilling interview with a young IDF sniper reveals the unofficial policy of shooting to kill children as young as 12. While none of this justifies a single suicide bomber, it goes a long way to account for the rage, humiliation, and despair of a people with little or no right to self-determination in their own land. Not objective, Hass admits, but a fair appraisal of Israeli policies that she regards as totally counter-productive.

Can this be true?

As an individual who has taken a life-long interest in Israel and the Zionist movement, I was shocked by this book because it has forced me to realize that many of my firmly held beliefs about Israel and Zionism were mistaken. Specifically this book shows that the Israeli government is in many respects guilty of mistreating its Arab citizens, and in doing so creating a type of hopelessness and despair, which explains their suicide attacks on Israel. At the same time the book explains that the Palestine Authority itself is riddled with corruption, and therefore equally unable to satisfy the hopes of its own citizens. This is an important book which should be widely read.

Whether you are a top local racer, high-school or college harrier or just log a few miles every day, this is a diary to seek out and stock up on for the next several years.

The color photographs are fantastic and there are 56 weeks of diary pages, so you won't run short, as what can happen with some other more famous publications. The information/tips and inspirational quotes are impressive, with a great balance between serious racing and fitness running.

RunLog does not just lead the large pack of diaries, it blows the race apart and captures the gold medal with ease.

I discovered this log book 'new' at a used book store back in 1998 and since then I bought two more for the next couple of years. It not only allows you to log numerical data, but subjective data as well. It also contains a fill-in linear graph for weekly mileage, race results entries, a pace chart, and basic training information. I love the color and black and white photographs of runners inside. It's a very well thought out design as far as log books go, and the most highly-evolved. I don't look for any other runner's log book but this one.

I was curious to see if anyone had read and reviewed "The Social Contract". I began reading Ardrey, Konrad Lorentz, Anthony Storr, and others in the late 60s. My background is physics so I had no preconceived notions that would cause me to reject outright the ideas expressed in the book. The Social Contract was published in 1970 and is one of the most thought-provoking and influential books that I have read. Among other things, Ardrey accurately predicts and explains our defeat in Viet Nam, and explains why housing projects are failures. This book provides a foundation for understanding what we do and why we do it; both the positive and the negative, based upon inherited traits that are common to all social animals. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with an open mind who likes to think.

using examples of social behavior among diferent types of animals ardrey posits that the human animal is no different in the trade offs he makes in his community to ensure the survival of himself and the species, and that much relig, philos teaching is counter to man's basic God given instincts. E.g.ardrey maintains that animal mothers will kill intruders, or even excess offspring who threaten her ability to ensure the survival of all her off spring. This is the natural law and opposition to prenatal or post natal population control is contrary to natural law. The book contains many other thought provoking facts, such as that when a community of animals see that they are becoming too numerous for the resources to survive, they will begin dying of stress related illness, or like the lemmings be driven by stress to run into the sea. a well researched and persuaive book by the author of AFRICAN GENESIS and THE TERRITORIAL IMPERATIVE."... excitingly argumentative...bound to provoke and stimulate..."
