Reading Tim Lydon's book is like being inside the head of a long-distance paddler who is an expert in the nature and history of the area he's traversing. That's a good place to be, as Tim is not only intimate with the Inside Passage, he is gifted with ample self-awareness, humility, and a good sense of humor.

Passage to Alaska is about the people and stories of the Inside Passage, its natural history and ecology, as discovered through a personal journey. Vivid first-hand descriptions and accounts alternate with background information much as one might paddle and hike by day and read explorers' and naturalists' journals in camp at night.

It's the reader's privilege to share the fear and excitement, the adverse weather, the uncertainty and doubt of this challenging adventure as well as the rewarding beauty, wildlife, camaraderie, occasional hilarity, and sense of accomplishment that make this a true story, well told.

I highly recommend Passage to Alaska for anyone who wants to know about the Inside Passage and what it's like to travel through it under one's own power, whether or not they would consider doing so themselves.

This is a gem of a book. The author does a wonderful job narrating an adventure story while providing valuable information about the geological and ecological background of this ever evolving part of Alaska. It made for an entertaining and informative read. Having had the pleasure to explore this part of the country by kayak myself, I enjoyed how this book's descriptions of the ocean and landscape captured the experience of exploring the Inside Passage.

I agree wholeheartedly with the other reviewers about this book! I loved the adventure story of kayaking through rough water and harsh weather for two months. The author really brings to life the forest, glaciers, mountains and wildlife of the Inside Passage. The information about the nature and history of the area separates this from a mere adventure story. It's really the story of the coast told through a gripping adventure. And the many sidebars that contain tips for sea kayakers are a great plus. I highly recommend this book!

This is a terrific book. The author does an impressive job of weaving together not only his personal story of his kayaking to Alaska, but also accounts of Vancouver's voyage, the explorations of John Muir, and a lot of natural history regarding the region. It's quite well-written and makes for a book that is very readable and often even riveting.

This is a great book!

Wow. What a great read. This is a top-notch adventure story that inspired me like few others. The author and his companion really took on the challenges of the northwest coast and came back with a story of high seas, wildlife and terrible weather. The descriptions were so good I actually felt WET after some of the passages. But it is more than an adventure story. The author weaves in fascinating information about the nature and culture of the Inside Passage, providing an informative look at this fascinating place. I've been to the Inside Passage on three different trips and always learn something new. I think Passage to Alaska would be a great companion for anyone traveling the area or simply wishing to learn about one of the wildest places remaining in North America. And it's a great adventure story, too!

The authors have done a very good jobs of explaining several complex matters. More importantly, the authors have clearly shown that they have trenmendous amount of real-world experiece. It's good to know that we still have some authors like that instead of too many professional writers, who have no real world experience and who just paraphase what M$ says about their product on the online help.

Thanks.

This book is very helpful if you are planning a Windows 2000 Active Directory design or already have one and need to get the most out of your AD. The authors have organized the book very well making it easy to find the information you need. The book is very useful as a quick reference. Additionally, material is presented in a logical order making it easily readable cover-to-cover if you need a comprehesive understanding of AD.

The authors stress the importance of a solid DNS design and drive home the point just how critical DNS is for good AD operation. There is a good description of forests, trees, and domains as well as much helpful information on planning sites and site replication. The book also goes into detail on printers and scripting.

I found the book very useful for setting up and administering different features of Windows 2000 such as group policy. There are good chapters on Group Policy Architecture and Managing Group Policy.

As an MCSE+Internet certified analyst assigned to the AD design team for a Fortune 500 company, I highly recommend this book. It makes a good operational reference for your bookshelf. Although not geared specifically for Windows 2000 certification tests, it is worth reading if you are preparing for the exams.

This books starts with a simple explanation of the basics in the first chapter and builds from there. The thorough index allows you to quickly find the topic your looking for and the exhaustive examples allow you to quickly review the pertinent material. A thorough treatment of active filter design is covered by the time the reader finishes the last chapter. This book not only serves as an excellent introduction to the material for the novice/beginner, but also serves as an invaluable reference to the seasoned engineer.

Active filter design was my favorite class when I was in graduate school, which uses this book as the text. I enjoyed it very much since it is well-written and I really learned a lot from it. The contents are organized so well from basic concepts to comprehensive theory and then to the various practical examples. I like this book not only because it is a good text book for study, but it is also a must for your reference collection as an engineer since this book is a complete theoretical and practical guide for active filter design. Now, I am working as an Electrical engineer focusing on Digital Signal Processing, and I am so glad that I have this book in hand because I always need to refer to it during my work. As a real cookbook for success in filter design, this book will benefit the lay person as well as the experienced engineer.

A definite text in active filter design.

Chapter 1 of this book introduces the engineer/student to all the basic concepts throughout the book. Many novel concepts are introduced here, as well as some little-known techniques that are still quite relevant today. Everything is tied together towards the end of the book. The final chapter dealing with components is a must-read for anyone wishing to understand components: MIL rating, reliability, drift, etc. This book presents a thorough treatment that is useful to the student as well as the practicing engineer.

This is an excellent book for the signal processing community as the stress is mainly on algorithms and implementation. A reseacher who wants to work in this field without much background in acoustics, finds this book very useful and it enables him to get to know how he can apply his adaptive signal processing skills to active noise control. This book provides in a simple way the active noise control field and its associated problems. As the book provides only required amount of acoustical details and explains the filtered LMS algorithm very clearly unlike other books, for a beginer it is a very good book. I didn't know any thing aboout ANC when I started, but to day I am able to contribute even to international journals and conferences. Further I have under taken projects at national level from government agencies to develop ANC systems. I feel this book is really well written and it makes the reader keen to know about the subject and provides him high level of confidence. I sincerely recommend this book for any person who is new to this field and has signal processing background. It is a very very very excellent book.

This is an excellent book for persons with signal processing background. The book provides only minimum information about acoustics for a signal processing person and does not confuse with too much of details. In this way, the book makes to reader comfortable. Also many aspects of signal processing which can improve the performance of an active noise control (ANC)system are explained and hence the reader feels more confident that he too can work in this field. This is very much essential as the adaptive algorithms play a crucial role in the ANC implementation. The FXLMS algorithm and its problems are well described. To start with I did not know any thing about ANC, but this book has helped me to get good understanding about it. Presnently, I am able to do research contributions to international journal and to conferences. Further, I have taken up projects at national level in ANC. I feel this book has presented the subject in a simple way retaining all the intricate details. This background enables a reseacher even to follow new developments taking place in this filed. This is a very very useful and excellent book.

This excellent text is written for advanced study and practicing engineers who need to design controllers for active noise control systems. The emphasis is on the algorithms that are usually implemented in a Digital Signal Processor. The book's treatment of acoustics, sensors, and actuators is not as in-depth as texts by Fuller or Nelson. Included in the book is C and assembly code for the most popular adaptive control techniques, but beware of bugs and patent issues. One of the algorithms covered in detail is the Filtered-X Least Mean Squares technique that one of the Authors (Morgan) help to make popular in the community.

I received the book on a Friday and by Saturday evening I had completely read this book. Not only is this book easy to understand, it is motivating and uplifting. I think its the concept of goals-- why should we approach our "Wellness" plans any differently than our financial plans. They both require short-term and long-term goals. Over the last three weeks I have followed the program, which I customized for myself, and I have lost about 4 pounds and I am now going to the gym three times a week and doing cardiovascular workouts for 45 minutes (that was unheard of for me a month ago), but I realize to reach my goals I've got to do these things. Active Wellness teaches you to realize this and helps to give you the inspiration you need to get going. I am truly pleased with this book. It has even taught me how to manage my stress in my daily dealings through meditation and visualization. It truly is an mind-body-spirit connection to achieving any goal for yourself. Definitely worth the read and implementation into your life.

Excellent resource for women engaged in exercise, sports, or an otherwise active lifestyle

Review Date: 2006-08-08
I exercise regularly (average of six days per week), and I was looking for a general reference manual that would supply information on a variety of topics such as nutrition, anatomy, and injuries. Happily, this book, designed specfically with women in mind, fit the bill perfectly; author Nadya Swedan provides details on virtually everything the average active woman needs to know. She begins by offering an overview of the body's major internal systems, focusing in particular on how problems in any of these areas might impact exercise. She imparts similar information on stress/emotional health and nutritional health; regarding the latter, she presents very basic guidelines for maintaining a healthy diet and coping with weight/body image concerns.

In the second half of the book, Swedan concentrates on anatomy, breaking down the major musculoskelatal areas of the body (Neck; Shoulder; Elbow, Wrist, and Hand; Back and Abdomen; Pelvis, Hip, and Thigh; Kneel; Leg, Ankle, Foot). For each of these areas, she reviews the muscles involved, discusses common pains and injuries, and provides information on evaluation and treatment. Finally, she ends each section with a series of simple, clearly illustrated exercises designed both to strengthen the area and to prevent/rehab injuries to the area. So far, I have found this part of the book to be particularly valuable, and I frequently refer back to it when questions arise.

The final part of this book is intended to help maximize your workout and fitness performance. Here, Swedan addresses general exercise problems and injuries (ie, not limited to an individual muscle group), discusses fueling/refueling for exercise, and finally, tackles more specific issues such as pregnancy fitness and sports-specific problems. Throughout the book, Swedan has a underlying focus on self-empowerment, encouraging women to be strong, confident, healthy, and happy. Her positive, optimistic attitude lends an authentic, caring quality to her writing, making her message all that much more effective. I am extremely happy with my purchase of this book, and I would not hesitate to recommend it to other active women like myself.

I love to write. But honestly, I've been fearing having to teach writing skills to middle school or high school students. Yet when I found this book, my fears vanished. Golub delicately instructs teachers how to stimulate students of all grade levels to write. His focus is to shift the process of reading and writing from a solitary activity to an interative group activity. He gives WONDERFUL illustrations of interactive group activities that are both fun for the teacher and the students. He questions the traditional classroom setting where the teacher simply gives students a "hand-out" with formulas and patterns for writing a paper. He challenges teachers to take on the role of designer and director in the classroom. In this way, knowledge is construted, not transmitted. This interactive classroom concept is the intstructive approach all teachers should adapt to. Golub's ideas for teaching students to write are both refreshing and creative. Without a doubt, this is a wonderful book which educators of all grade levels should have.

English teachers who are moving with the standards and performance models of change are sure to appreciate Jeffrey Golub's book because it has practical suggestions about how to set up a positive and supportive climate and teach skills. As he gives practical ideas on teaching discrete listening and writing skills, he also imparts his main ideas on the interactive classroom, a place where students make meaning as they develop their language skills. I found the book to be full of content, clarifying ideas, and a philosophy of teaching that matches and furthers my own practice. The added plus is that the style is lively, humorous and easy to read. A delight!

This is a good beginning book. Not great but good. It provides good step by step instruction for some of the most common tasks and good explainations of what you are actually accomplishing. The only complaint I have with the book is in the chapter on creating a module. When he has you accually go into the SQL database to design the tables and stored procedures, he follows a path that is not always available in every DotNetNuke hosting environment. Still, if you have some SQL knowledge, you can modify what he does to create a workable installation.

In a way, the module deficiency is not really serious. DotNetNuke is such an extensive product that most things are possible right out of the box. If you start thinking you need to write a module, you should first make sure you understand fully the ones that are already available.

This book will take you from absolutely no knowledge of DotnetNuke and get you well on your way. Simple to follow. Like any good intro book it will help you to understand how DNN works and gives you enough information to know where to go to learn more. For example after you are shown what a skin is and how to use it you are then shown how to make one of your own. You should then understand where you want to go from there. My experience level is 1.5 years as an ASP.net, VB and C# Developer with SQL server 2005. I have no previous knowledge of DNN. It will be very helpful if you know a bit about Visual Web developer, Light Coding, CSS, XML and some graphics program knowledge such as Fireworks or Photoshop. However, this book will get even the non programmer where he needs to be to use DNN. In short - if you are new, Start here.

This is a very good introduction to DotNetNuke. It will help you install DNN on you own machine and guide you through building a simple website.

If you know a little about programming in VB and know something about HTML and CSS, this book will show you how to write your own DNN modules and create your own DNN skins and containers. You won't learn how to write complex modules or elaborate skins but you'll learn the basics.

If you already know how to install DNN and how to create DNN modules and skins, this book is not for you.

If you know nothing about programming in VB and know nothing about HTML, then you should probably learn about them before you tackle this book.

It's not for the complete novice and it won't teach you how to code. But it will get you up and going with VWD and DNN. Well written with good screenshots. He also takes you through the process of creating modules. It's a good primer and was what I was looking for.

This book is comparable and would help anyone become better organized to deal with daily and unexpected situations. I bought this guide for myself, then my mother was diagnosed with cancer and passed away within seven months. The workbook pages really helped me to know what questions to bring up with her. It saved a lot of time and aggravation after she passed away when I wasn't emotionally able to handle tough decisions. There are so many extra tips in this workbook; it is helpful even if you are going on vacation and someone needs to housesit. This workbook is helpful if you're 25 or 75. I highly recommend it.

The Beneficiary Book is an icredible resource for organizing one's estate. It is well-designed and easy to use. And, it seems to cover all of the bases, so you don't have to rack your brain to figure out what you've forgotten! I also really like the hardcover looseleaf format, as it's easy to pull a page out, fill it in, and replace it. Well worth the cost.

EXCELLENT BOOK!
