Necessity for parents of high energy children.
Thank Heavens this brilliant book existsThis book will tell you if your child (or yourself or your partner) fits this category. If there isn't a fit, move on; this book isn't for you and you need to consult other literature. If you find a fit, this book is what you need. It explains why the behavior occurs, what is probably missing from the child's environment, and how you can work with the child's behavior. It lets you understand, as well as develop strategies so that you can work together for harmony in the family. You may never achieve 'peace', but harmony is a pretty good outcome.
For us, there are still bad days and weeks. But Jonathon no longer has to ask the terrible question he once did: "Does Daddy really love us?" And I know that my son does love me, despite all we have been through, perhaps because of what we have all been through.
As an adult 'active alert', life is not always easy. Being by nature a 'non-conformist' is a recipe for disaster in many areas. But this book has helped me see how to manage my life a little better and to use the gifts I have, while keeping an eye out for the effect of the weaknesses that this type has.
Invaluable, amazing, a god-sendWe've been especially blessed to become part of Linda's client base and meet with her several times/year. Let me just say, she's amazing!!!!!! Buy this book!!!!

Precise and Informative
Essential ASP.NET is an EXCELLENT BOOK!!This book is well written and flows nicely. Without a doubt it is an excellent book for beginners and intermediate levels, but I would bet that even advanced users would pick up tips and tricks from the book.
Summary
Chapter 1: Architecture
This chapter explains the basic new architecture behind ASP.NET.
Compilation vs. Interpretation, Code-behind, new Page architecture, Shadow Copying, Directives, and new Intrinsic Objects (HttpRequest, HttpResponse, etc) are a few of the topics covered.
Chapter 2: Web Forms
This chapter is all about Web Forms. ViewState, HtmlControls,
WebControls, and Events are some of the items discussed. One section I liked the best was the "Day in the life of a page". It explained the step by step events that occur during a page's lifetime in a very clear and concise manner.
Chapter 3: Configuration
This is an excellent chapter that discusses the new XML based
configuration in ASP.NET. Web.Config, Machine.Config, and
configuration hierarchy are examined. processModel and other elements are also discussed.
Chapter 4: HTTP Pipeline
This chapter goes over the HTTP Pipeline, and all the actions that take place each time a requests comes in. It goes into great coverage of how that request is routed through the architecture. It also goes over Context, Applications, Custom Handlers, and a few other related topics. This is a great chapter.
Chapter 5: Diagnostics and Error Handling
This chapter shows us how to get out of the classic response.write method of debugging ASP apps by examining the new diagnostic and error handling capabilities of ASP.NET. Page Tracing, Application-level Tracing, Error Handling, and Unhandled Exceptions are all discussed.
Chapter 6: Validation
This is a chapter that explains form validation (client and server-side), validation control architecture, and the validation controls.
Chapter 7: Data Binding
This chapter starts by explaining the fundamentals of binding data to controls, and then goes into IDataReader Binding, DataSet Binding, and picking when to use a DataSet vs DataReader. The chapter ends by discussing templated controls (DataGrid, Repeater, and DataList).
Chapter 8: Custom Controls
This is the largest chapter of the book (69 pages). This chapter
covers custom control fundamentals, state management consideration when designing custom controls, composite controls, and user controls. Designer integration with VS.Net as well as validation and data binding within custom controls is also covered. This is an excellent chapter.
Chapter 9: Caching
This chapter discusses the new caching opportunities that exist in ASP.NET. Output caching and how it works is discussed. The
VaryByParam attribute is also examined, as well as page fragment
caching. The chapter also covers data caching, and consideration and guidelines for using it.
Chapter 10: State Management
Application state, session state, cookie state, and view state are all covered in this chapter. I think this is a great chapter because it discusses the pros and cons of each type of state, which will help developers be able to determine which type of state management would be best for their specific situation. Good discussion, with great insights.
Chapter 11: Security
A short chapter on security ends the book. Server and client
authentication start the chapter out, and then we go into ASP.NET security. The authentication and authentication elements in the web.config file are both discussed, as is role-based authentication. System identity is the last topic discussed.
I give this book a 9 out of 10. It would be a great addition to any developer's library. There is also another version of the book with examples in C# for you semicolon worshipers. Well done!

Excellent how-to instructions for Active Directory ScriptersPages: 622

Rater - Carlos Magalhaes - Active Directory Programming MVP
About the author - Robbie Allen has been authoring books for quite some time now. I have been following every release. Robbie has a wonderful writing style that allows for quick and enjoyable reading. This book is no exception. Robbie has a thorough knowledge of Active Directory; he recently was awarded the MVP award from Microsoft (well done, Robbie!) and is highly respected in the Active Directory community.
Hidden gems - Being a technical reviewer myself for many Active Directory and Windows Server books, very often are the technical reviewers forgotten in a book review. To Rick Kingslan, Gil Kirkpatrick, Tony Murray, Todd Myrick, Joe Richards and Kevin Sullivan: well done guys! Your efforts along with Robbie's have made this book a true gem.
Audience - I am among the fortunate few that have the job title, "System Developer and System Administrator" (both a blessing and a curse!). I can however confirm that this book is well suited for both audiences. There is no constraint on which scripting language to use either. Robbie provides both VBScript and Perl examples for most of his code samples, they are easy to follow and with the additional knowledge this book provides, easy to expand on.
What this book is not - This book is not an Active Directory Programming book. It does not go into the depth of detail about certain points (as it is not the objective of the book) like Active Directory Second Addition by O'Reilly does, but covers the points that are important very well.
Quick Overview of Inside the book - The book is comprised of 18 chapters. (The chapter headers below are my personal abbreviations for the chapters)
Chapter 1 - The stage is set.
This chapter covers the basics about what scripting languages and tools that will be used and any issues to take into consideration.
Chapter 2 - Core Architecture is important!
The importance of how to create and maintain your Forests, Domains and trusts is explained in this chapter.
Chapter 3 - Who Runs my Network Operating System (NOS)?
The servers that are regarded as the back bone of the network your Domain Controllers, Global Catalogs and FSMO's all important tasks that one has to do on a daily basis is covered in chapter 3.
Chapter 4 - Ohh objects where are you?
To me an important advantage (and there are many more) that Windows ® 2003 and Windows ® 2000 have over the older NOS is that the searching capability is enhanced and no object can hide. Chapter 4 covers Searching and Manipulating objects.
Chapter 5 - The Holding cells of objects
This chapter covers the creating and maintenance of Organizational units.
Chapter 6 - And of course who could forget the users.
Want to find out just about everything you can script for the user object? Then this chapter is for you.
Chapter 7 - How do I herd my users?
People live in communities (like Tony Murray's ActiveDir.org or http://groups.yahoo.com/group/adsianddirectoryservices) and active directory caters for these groupings by allowing users to create (no prizes) Groups. Chapter 7 covers creating and maintaining groups.
Chapter 8 - Computers
Chapter 8 is for you if you need to create and maintain your computer objects.
Chapter 9 - Rules, Rules, Rules!
And of course if you have ever managed a group of objects you have to apply some rules. Create and maintain your Groups Policy Objects with this chapter.
Chapter 10 - The big boss
With every wonderful creation there has to be a boss or in this case a backbone. This chapter is very important, covering important points to remember about your Active Directory Schema.
Chapter 11 - How do I build my site?
Network topology can be tricky. Use the scripts in this chapter to help you find out more about your sites.
Chapter 12 - Hey why don't I have that object on my directory partition?
Replication is such an important part of Active Directory. One of the most neglected areas with Active Directory. Chapter 12 provides some invaluable scripts.
Chapter 13 - Nice to meet you but who are you?
Domain Naming System (DNS), imagine we had to live in a world where there where no names. Ever wondered how to modify DNS server configurations using a script? Chapter 13 has your answer.
Chapter 14 - Are you really who you say you are?
This chapter can not be missed, with the internet pretending to be what it is not, this chapter covering Security and Authentication is a must.
Chapter 15 - "You network is as good as your auditing"
A famous person once said, "You won't know what's wrong until you ask". Dive into the world of logging, monitoring, auditing and setting quotas with this chapter.
Chapter 16 - Bang, now what?
How many times have I been called in to "fix" a very sick Active Directory installation and I find out backups have not been working for months! Please take time and read this chapter, the scripts and advice on Backing up, Recovering , important DIT maintenance and watching those deleted objects can save people like me hours of work.
Chapter 17 - I know about Domain Partitions but what are Application Partitions?
If you do not know what an application partition is or does, chapter 17 is for you!
Chapter 18 - But I use the .net Framework
This chapter is dedicated in explaining how to use the different technologies and programming languages with Active Directory.
My Verdict
A wonderful book for overworked Administrators that really don't have the time to go through the learning curve of scripting, the book provides the code snippets there ready to use. And if you don't feel like typing them out here is the download link for the entire source code for the whole book. http://www.rallenhome.com/books/adcookbook/code.html
Robbie, well done, this is a great book.
Wonderful Book!I consider this a must have book and would be a good book for any range of experience, from beginner to advanced.

Simply put, Toelsen is the Petzold of ATL.This one is DEFINITELY a keeper, right up there with Jeff Prosise for MFC, and Petzold for Win32. This is the best ATL/COM book I have read, hands down.
Simply the best COM/ATL book out thereThis book is easily superior to "Beginning ATL 3 COM," "COM+ From the Ground Up," and "Creating Lightweight Components." The other ATL book that is good is "Active Template Library," but this book is better and more recent. For example, it does a far better job of explaining ATL internals. Amazingly, the explanations of ATL are in many ways superior to a book on the market that purports to be solely an ATL internals book. Of course, the difference is that one author can write, the other cannot.
In any event I do not hesitate in declaring this book at this time to be the one book that is best at explaining and conducting a thoroughgoing learning session in COM and ATL. I applaud the author for rising above the mediocrity that so typifies programming books.
Detailed, complete, well-explained

Wonderful introduction!Nevertheless, an excellent book. It is small enough to be fully read (and exercised) in a weekend. At the price, it's a real bargain. And while I'm not the "book learnin" type, I found the sparse yet understable text to give me the information I needed. It's no bible of info, but just an introductory course...
very good book
