Necessity for parents of high energy children.
Our son is very active and extremely bright. When he plays with others he stands out and unfortunately doesn't seem to understand that people have a space limit and prefer not to have someone in their's. He wants to touch almost everything and is very intuitive. The scariest thing is, he is a lot like me. come to find out, I am an active alert adult. The book covers adults briefly too. This type of child needs more positive reinforcement b/c they are hit with a lot of negativity b/c they are different - not in a better or worse way - just different. He gets up revved and ready to go and will never admit that he's tired - even as his eyelids are slowly closing while he says, "I'm not ..............." zzzzzzzzzzzzz. ha!! ha! I had to find something to better understand his and my behavior and this book helps you to see his skills/talents as gifts instead of as something negative. Our son is also very strong-willed and is a natural leader. This will serve him well in later life - however, as his parents it's hell sometimes. Appreciate your "little pistols" and see them for the wonderful people they are and will grow to be.

Thank Heavens this brilliant book exists
This book is a Godsend! I was at my wit's end in dealing with one of our twins. He was obviously intelligent, but just didn't get it together. A friend suggested this book, which we read voraciously. One of the things that became clear: I was active-alert, too! No wonder we clashed. I'm not sure that I am any better at things now, but I think I understand him a lot better, which is half the battle. We used the book to help us work with his kindergarten teacher, and that worked well; and we are blessed with a brilliantly understanding first-grade teacher, who can provide boundaries for his behavior without limits to his development.

This book will tell you if your child (or yourself or your partner) fits this category. If there isn't a fit, move on; this book isn't for you and you need to consult other literature. If you find a fit, this book is what you need. It explains why the behavior occurs, what is probably missing from the child's environment, and how you can work with the child's behavior. It lets you understand, as well as develop strategies so that you can work together for harmony in the family. You may never achieve 'peace', but harmony is a pretty good outcome.

For us, there are still bad days and weeks. But Jonathon no longer has to ask the terrible question he once did: "Does Daddy really love us?" And I know that my son does love me, despite all we have been through, perhaps because of what we have all been through.

As an adult 'active alert', life is not always easy. Being by nature a 'non-conformist' is a recipe for disaster in many areas. But this book has helped me see how to manage my life a little better and to use the gifts I have, while keeping an eye out for the effect of the weaknesses that this type has.

Invaluable, amazing, a god-send
When I first picked up this book and looked through it, I thought "when was this woman in my house?" We've clung to it like a lifeline. It was such a relief to know it wasn't us, there wasn't 'something wrong with him', and that there were ways to cope. I've recommended this book to several people who have been equally thrilled. I've been able to use things learned to help him in school, help him with transition times, and head off some of the explosions. Life will never be calm and peaceful with an active alert in the house, but that doesn't mean it's a bad thing!

We've been especially blessed to become part of Linda's client base and meet with her several times/year. Let me just say, she's amazing!!!!!! Buy this book!!!!

Precise and Informative
I have about 5 books (mostly ebook format) on ASP.Net from the step by step to advanced and Fritz's book is an eye opener. Most of the ASP.NET books fail to mention why some quirks/details with ASP.Net the way they are. EAN is like a pointer and half way through the book, I had so many 'aha' moments that I was left wondering WHO IS THIS guy? Don't expect explanations about variables and such (go refer ASP.Net Web Developers Gude pub. by Syngress) and thankfully so. You will have a better understanding of ASP.Net by the end of the book than syntax which you would be thankful for when you start writing ASP.Net applications in real world. I have yet to finish the book but I couldn't wait to put in my 2 cents about this book. A definite must on your bookshelf (www.safaribooksonline.com)!!!

Essential ASP.NET is an EXCELLENT BOOK!!
There are so many books out about ASP.NET it can be a very difficult task to choose one. To me there seems to be two types of books. One is the example intensive (at times over laden) book. The other is the "how it works" type of book. The market seems to be flooded with example intensive books, but appears light in the "how it works" type. This book is a fantastic "how it works" book. It has good examples but is not drowning in them. The book's strength is its explanations of ASP.NET core topics, and the little tips and tricks that readers will pick up along the way.

This book is well written and flows nicely. Without a doubt it is an excellent book for beginners and intermediate levels, but I would bet that even advanced users would pick up tips and tricks from the book.

Summary

Chapter 1: Architecture
This chapter explains the basic new architecture behind ASP.NET.
Compilation vs. Interpretation, Code-behind, new Page architecture, Shadow Copying, Directives, and new Intrinsic Objects (HttpRequest, HttpResponse, etc) are a few of the topics covered.

Chapter 2: Web Forms
This chapter is all about Web Forms. ViewState, HtmlControls,
WebControls, and Events are some of the items discussed. One section I liked the best was the "Day in the life of a page". It explained the step by step events that occur during a page's lifetime in a very clear and concise manner.

Chapter 3: Configuration
This is an excellent chapter that discusses the new XML based
configuration in ASP.NET. Web.Config, Machine.Config, and
configuration hierarchy are examined. processModel and other elements are also discussed.

Chapter 4: HTTP Pipeline
This chapter goes over the HTTP Pipeline, and all the actions that take place each time a requests comes in. It goes into great coverage of how that request is routed through the architecture. It also goes over Context, Applications, Custom Handlers, and a few other related topics. This is a great chapter.

Chapter 5: Diagnostics and Error Handling
This chapter shows us how to get out of the classic response.write method of debugging ASP apps by examining the new diagnostic and error handling capabilities of ASP.NET. Page Tracing, Application-level Tracing, Error Handling, and Unhandled Exceptions are all discussed.

Chapter 6: Validation
This is a chapter that explains form validation (client and server-side), validation control architecture, and the validation controls.

Chapter 7: Data Binding
This chapter starts by explaining the fundamentals of binding data to controls, and then goes into IDataReader Binding, DataSet Binding, and picking when to use a DataSet vs DataReader. The chapter ends by discussing templated controls (DataGrid, Repeater, and DataList).

Chapter 8: Custom Controls
This is the largest chapter of the book (69 pages). This chapter
covers custom control fundamentals, state management consideration when designing custom controls, composite controls, and user controls. Designer integration with VS.Net as well as validation and data binding within custom controls is also covered. This is an excellent chapter.

Chapter 9: Caching
This chapter discusses the new caching opportunities that exist in ASP.NET. Output caching and how it works is discussed. The
VaryByParam attribute is also examined, as well as page fragment
caching. The chapter also covers data caching, and consideration and guidelines for using it.

Chapter 10: State Management
Application state, session state, cookie state, and view state are all covered in this chapter. I think this is a great chapter because it discusses the pros and cons of each type of state, which will help developers be able to determine which type of state management would be best for their specific situation. Good discussion, with great insights.

Chapter 11: Security
A short chapter on security ends the book. Server and client

authentication start the chapter out, and then we go into ASP.NET security. The authentication and authentication elements in the web.config file are both discussed, as is role-based authentication. System identity is the last topic discussed.

I give this book a 9 out of 10. It would be a great addition to any developer's library. There is also another version of the book with examples in C# for you semicolon worshipers. Well done!

Simply Awsome!!
Excellent ASP.NET Book. My compliments to the author. Mo .net marketing, clear language and excellent chapters on configuration, validation, and especially custom handlers. My library is mostly Wrox, but lately thir books lost a lot of quality. I will take an extra look at .NET Developer Series from Addison-Wesley from now on

Action Learning for Executive Development
With this book, Marquardt has created the most exciting and practical model for executive development I have ever seen. Warren Bennis recently asked, poignantly, "Is there a future for leadership?" Marquardt is leading all management educators into the future of leadership. As director of an executive Master's program at American University, I am astonished at how powerful Marquardt's model is for developing "leaderly learners," in the magical phrase coined by Peter Vaill. Action learning is perfect for leaders who want to learn and learners who want to lead. Marquardt's chapter on the role of "action learning coach" is, by itself, worth a shelf of books of leadership. My executive participants are raving about how action learning has transformed their individual mindsets, allowing them to surface take-for-granted assumptions, as well as helped them begin to transform the culture or collective mindsets of their organizations.

The best guide for action learning practitioners
Overall, this book is invaluable in that it provides readers with great insight into the ¡°what,¡± ¡°why,¡± and ¡°how¡± of action learning. It explains key components and principles of action learning in great detail. In addition, the author explains how to apply the components and principles covered in this book by giving specific examples and procedures. The usefulness of this book is illustrated by the questions and checklists, which are very practical. I believe this book will surely serve as an action learning manual for HRD practitioners for years to come.

Fantastic How-to Book
Mike Marquadt has done it again! This book is an especially useful in that it lays out the process of Action Learning in easy to follow how-to steps. It makes an outstanding handbook for anyone looking to harness the power of Action Learning.

Excellent how-to instructions for Active Directory Scripters
Book Review: Active Directory Cookbook for Windows ® Server 2003 and Windows ® Server 2000

Rating: 9/10
Rater - Carlos Magalhaes - Active Directory Programming MVP

About the author - Robbie Allen has been authoring books for quite some time now. I have been following every release. Robbie has a wonderful writing style that allows for quick and enjoyable reading. This book is no exception. Robbie has a thorough knowledge of Active Directory; he recently was awarded the MVP award from Microsoft (well done, Robbie!) and is highly respected in the Active Directory community.

Hidden gems - Being a technical reviewer myself for many Active Directory and Windows Server books, very often are the technical reviewers forgotten in a book review. To Rick Kingslan, Gil Kirkpatrick, Tony Murray, Todd Myrick, Joe Richards and Kevin Sullivan: well done guys! Your efforts along with Robbie's have made this book a true gem.

Audience - I am among the fortunate few that have the job title, "System Developer and System Administrator" (both a blessing and a curse!). I can however confirm that this book is well suited for both audiences. There is no constraint on which scripting language to use either. Robbie provides both VBScript and Perl examples for most of his code samples, they are easy to follow and with the additional knowledge this book provides, easy to expand on.

What this book is not - This book is not an Active Directory Programming book. It does not go into the depth of detail about certain points (as it is not the objective of the book) like Active Directory Second Addition by O'Reilly does, but covers the points that are important very well.

Quick Overview of Inside the book - The book is comprised of 18 chapters. (The chapter headers below are my personal abbreviations for the chapters)

Chapter 1 - The stage is set.
This chapter covers the basics about what scripting languages and tools that will be used and any issues to take into consideration.

Chapter 2 - Core Architecture is important!
The importance of how to create and maintain your Forests, Domains and trusts is explained in this chapter.

Chapter 3 - Who Runs my Network Operating System (NOS)?
The servers that are regarded as the back bone of the network your Domain Controllers, Global Catalogs and FSMO's all important tasks that one has to do on a daily basis is covered in chapter 3.

Chapter 4 - Ohh objects where are you?
To me an important advantage (and there are many more) that Windows ® 2003 and Windows ® 2000 have over the older NOS is that the searching capability is enhanced and no object can hide. Chapter 4 covers Searching and Manipulating objects.

Chapter 5 - The Holding cells of objects
This chapter covers the creating and maintenance of Organizational units.

Chapter 6 - And of course who could forget the users.
Want to find out just about everything you can script for the user object? Then this chapter is for you.

Chapter 7 - How do I herd my users?
People live in communities (like Tony Murray's ActiveDir.org or http://groups.yahoo.com/group/adsianddirectoryservices) and active directory caters for these groupings by allowing users to create (no prizes) Groups. Chapter 7 covers creating and maintaining groups.

Chapter 8 - Computers
Chapter 8 is for you if you need to create and maintain your computer objects.

Chapter 9 - Rules, Rules, Rules!
And of course if you have ever managed a group of objects you have to apply some rules. Create and maintain your Groups Policy Objects with this chapter.

Chapter 10 - The big boss
With every wonderful creation there has to be a boss or in this case a backbone. This chapter is very important, covering important points to remember about your Active Directory Schema.

Chapter 11 - How do I build my site?
Network topology can be tricky. Use the scripts in this chapter to help you find out more about your sites.

Chapter 12 - Hey why don't I have that object on my directory partition?
Replication is such an important part of Active Directory. One of the most neglected areas with Active Directory. Chapter 12 provides some invaluable scripts.

Chapter 13 - Nice to meet you but who are you?
Domain Naming System (DNS), imagine we had to live in a world where there where no names. Ever wondered how to modify DNS server configurations using a script? Chapter 13 has your answer.

Chapter 14 - Are you really who you say you are?
This chapter can not be missed, with the internet pretending to be what it is not, this chapter covering Security and Authentication is a must.

Chapter 15 - "You network is as good as your auditing"
A famous person once said, "You won't know what's wrong until you ask". Dive into the world of logging, monitoring, auditing and setting quotas with this chapter.

Chapter 16 - Bang, now what?
How many times have I been called in to "fix" a very sick Active Directory installation and I find out backups have not been working for months! Please take time and read this chapter, the scripts and advice on Backing up, Recovering , important DIT maintenance and watching those deleted objects can save people like me hours of work.

Chapter 17 - I know about Domain Partitions but what are Application Partitions?
If you do not know what an application partition is or does, chapter 17 is for you!

Chapter 18 - But I use the .net Framework
This chapter is dedicated in explaining how to use the different technologies and programming languages with Active Directory.

My Verdict

A wonderful book for overworked Administrators that really don't have the time to go through the learning curve of scripting, the book provides the code snippets there ready to use. And if you don't feel like typing them out here is the download link for the entire source code for the whole book. http://www.rallenhome.com/books/adcookbook/code.html

Robbie, well done, this is a great book.

Wonderful Book!
I purchased my copy of the AD Cookbook last week from my local book shop. I just happened to find it as I was not looking for anything in particular but this caught my eye. It has not disappointed. Spent the first evening going thru all the vbs examples. Love how it has the web site so that you can cut and paste vbs examples. I've been dealing with Active Directory for over two years now and have done more than my share of scripts in that time. I've already added numerous snipets from this book. The recipe format is great in that it presents a 'problem' and then shows multiple ways of solving that problem using GUI, command line and scripting examples. This will be one of the few technical books that I read cover to cover. Yet the book will still remain on my book shelf afterwards for day to day examples.

I consider this a must have book and would be a good book for any range of experience, from beginner to advanced.

Very good help for administrators
I bought the book "Active Directory Cookbook" a few weeks ago, and it is G R E A T. It explains a lot of functionalities, most of them often used when automatically administrating an MS AD-environment. Nevertheless the examples do not only explain how to use the interfaces via scripts (thanx for the perl examples), it also yields to good explanations, how the ADS and its fields are used. So this book is a good teacher of using ADS via scripting.

Inner Work: Using Dreams and Active Imagination for Personal Growth
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins (April, 1986)
Author: Robert A. Johnson
Amazon base price: $16.95
Used price: $5.50
Collectible price: $9.50
Average review score:

The Introverted Intuitive's Dream!
It is difficult to imagine how powerful this small book is. Granted, it is probably most appealing to intuitives and introverts, like myself, but for us, it is like manna from heaven. Johnson has such a gift for putting things simply. The book can be read quickly but may well take a lifetime to permeate your consciousness. As a professional astrologer, VisionCoach and expert Tarot symbolist, one of the most frequent questions I am asked by old and new clients is this: "I had this dream, Nancy. What does it mean?" In spite of ongoing research on my part, personally leading dream groups and reading the new books that come out each year, I always return to Johnson's classic. He's said it all. I think "Inner Work" is, quite simply, the best book ever written about dream interpretation. Each of our dreams is as personal as our fingerprints. If you are an extravert, you may not dream often or you may dream the kind of dreams that are just processing the minute business of the day. At least once in awhile, though, even the most extraverted of us has a Major Dream, a dream that wakes us with a cold sweat or a warm pulse. What does this mean? What is communicating here? Why to you? And why NOW? Johnson's book puts all these questions squarely back on your own shoulders for answerung, for ... inner work!! But don't worry, he doesn't just drop you off in the middle of the nowhere without a map. This book contains all the information you need to become an expert at interpreting your own dreams. This is important because, as the great Swiss transcendental psychologist Carl Jung wrote, "God speaks in dream."

Practical, effective introduction (blows away the myths)
Before "Inner Work" I had read a few other dream interpretation books all of which basically described certain recurring dream images and labelled them with a limited definition: basically they were the "Teacher's Edition" to understanding your dreams with the answers in the back. I never understood how an image, say a snake or falling, could be interpreted in basically the same way by so many different people. Johnson explains why you can't. Images are personal and have to be interpreted by the dreamer and Johnson describes how to use "active imagination" to not only figure out what your dreams mean but how they can help along your life journey. This book really helped me tap into the "invisible" part of my consciousness and make practical, healthy changes in my life and prayer. His comparison of archetypes (universally shared images) and personal symbols was most appreciated. Complex ideas are explained in a way that any neophyte to dream analysis can understand and apply to your own life. Johnson explains how to make practical and physical changes by conversing with your dreams.

The Wisdom Inside
This wonderful book is clear and practical, and really goes to the point. It instructs you and helps you at two levels: first it explains how our dreams and imagination function as a link between our conscious and unconscious lives; then it goes on to instruct the reader on how to learn from this link and how to build a fruitful and lifelong dialogue between these two spheres of being. In order to achieve the latter, the author shows us, with clear examples, the way to understand our dreams and to use our imagination and so find the wisdom that we all have inside. Although this all sounds like any other self-help book, here the author never means to sound witty, empty or artificially triumphant. He promises nothing and makes sure we understand that what he is telling us is nothing new: many cultures use these same methods for the psychological, spiritual well-being of people. But we happen to be living in a time and culture that have lost the sense of inner life.Reading this book is like listening to the words of a loving teacher, who knows things because "he has been there before".Well-written and packed with no-nonsense spirituality, without losing touch with the world where we live or our common sense.

Useful and generally interesting
The experiences and explanations provided are primarily devoted to total hip replacement. Interesting combination of viewpoints - orthopedic surgeon, physical therapist and patient - makes book more helpful to those facing the daunting prospect of a total hip replacement. Helps somewhat to decrease anxiety about the surgery and recovery. Information is generally accurate.

Good info.
There's a lot of good information here for those who suffer from hip and/or knee arthritis. The book covers both conservative and surgical treatments for arthritis. Also highly recommend "Treat Your Own Knees"- based on research articles and offers the reader super-simple treatments for knee pain they can do at home.

need new hips, read this book
If you are young (or older and active) and considering hip replacement, read this book. It was instrumental in helping me prepare for the ultimate decision; and prepare for the surgery- exercise, exercise, exercise! The fitter and stronger you are going in, the faster and better you'll be going out. Get involved, don't let the surgeons and insurance companies make all the decisions...they are your hips. Great book for serious programmer
This book cleared up some gray areas not covered by other AD books, e.g. LDAP programming. The author has a thorough understanding of how AD works, not just the APIs on top of it. Each subject is covered in great depth but still readable. The last few chapters about LDAP programming are especially valuable. I highly recommend this book to serious AD programmers.

Excellent book
The book starts off with several concise and informational chapters on AD fundamentals before diving into detail on ADSI and LDAP programming. Very easy to read and logically organized. Code samples and explanations are well thought out and easy to adapt. I've had my copy almost 2 years and it is a great reference.

Excellent book
Very good book, extensively covers LDAP programming
unlike others.

Developer's Workshop to COM and ATL 3.0
Published in Paperback by Wordware Publishing (April, 2000)
Author: Andrew Troelsen
Amazon base price: $34.97
List price: $49.95 (that's 30% off!)
Average review score:

Simply put, Toelsen is the Petzold of ATL.
At first, when I read this book I had absolutely no knowledge about COM (minus VB's implementation); However, the book itself was so thorough in explaining the basic concepts of COM from the ground up that it didn't matter--it explained COM in the best detail I've ever seen in any book. The author explained things so well, in fact, that I was able to start working with COM libraries (such as ADO) within just a few days of reading the book! I remembered looking at ATL code just a few days before I read this book, and I said, "I can't read this at all!" Almost about a week later, after reading the book, I looked at that same chunk of code, and to my sheer amazement, it made perfect sense.

This one is DEFINITELY a keeper, right up there with Jeff Prosise for MFC, and Petzold for Win32. This is the best ATL/COM book I have read, hands down.

Simply the best COM/ATL book out there
The book is not perfect. I did run across a few mistakes; I had some trouble with a couple of the examples. But this book is far and away the best tutorial on COM and ATL that is out there. It is more than a simplistic introduction. The author starts with simple concepts, usually in straight C++, and progresses in a very logical sequence to an intermediate level using ATL. Many subtleties are covered but in context of the overall presentation. There is none of this inexplicable, out of context pandering to fellow COM gurus that seems to motivate so many software authors.

This book is easily superior to "Beginning ATL 3 COM," "COM+ From the Ground Up," and "Creating Lightweight Components." The other ATL book that is good is "Active Template Library," but this book is better and more recent. For example, it does a far better job of explaining ATL internals. Amazingly, the explanations of ATL are in many ways superior to a book on the market that purports to be solely an ATL internals book. Of course, the difference is that one author can write, the other cannot.

In any event I do not hesitate in declaring this book at this time to be the one book that is best at explaining and conducting a thoroughgoing learning session in COM and ATL. I applaud the author for rising above the mediocrity that so typifies programming books.

Detailed, complete, well-explained
This book is perfect if you have some knowledge of C++ and OOD. In fact, chapter 1 is an excellent nutshell of OOD with C++. The book covers both the low-level detail, but quickly, and the high-level ATL view. Also, it doesn't get all wrapped up with OLE, MFC, and Windows programming.

Lots of great information
It's almost overwhelming. There is no way you can spend this much time teaching everything, but it's nice to be able to pick and choose fun things to do with your baby. It's easy to use in a well thought out layout from birth on, divided by sensory perception.

What do you do with a baby?
As a first time mom,of a child with special needs to boot, I had no idea. This book and the others in the series are great resources for finding things to do with your child other than watching Teletubbies for the thousandth time. If your child needs extra help in a certain area, like fine motor or listening skills, you can easily find a variety of exercises to help here. The later books in the series (Threes, Fours, and Fives) would also be a great resource for a homeschooling parent.

Active Learning for Infants
Not just for daycare! I am a first-time, stay-at-home mom and needed a way to tell if I was "doing all the right stuff" in regards to play, development, speech, music, etc. This book gives you exercises that are so easy for each stage of the first year of life. There is not a lot to read like a typical baby care book, but each section outlines what the child should be accomplishing and gives you exercises to ensure that your child reaches those development milestones. If you can look past the idea that it is written for daycare providers, you will find this book extremely helpful. I knew I was giving my child all he needed because I had these exercises to use as a handy guide. Good luck to you!

Wonderful introduction!
By using this simple book you too can get a toe into the ASP waters. Keep in mind the fact that this is a beginner's book. However, sometimes assumptions are made that might not be accurate for a beginner.

Nevertheless, an excellent book. It is small enough to be fully read (and exercised) in a weekend. At the price, it's a real bargain. And while I'm not the "book learnin" type, I found the sparse yet understable text to give me the information I needed. It's no bible of info, but just an introductory course...

very good book
This is book for beginners, from precocious teenagers to first-graders at IT college. The material is original and well thought out and the book is so easy to read that, without really realizing it, you can suddenly program in ASP. I really like it.

A Godsend
This book makes the teachers life easy. After a couple of days preparation you will be able to deliver an excellent course. The innovative instructor will be able to strech the material to a 12-week semester, but the beauty is that the book is so [inexpensive] you can use it for any length of course, right down to 2-day courses!

Why waste your time developing your own stuff when this is 100% foolproof and ready-to-go? This book is simply a Godsend for the overworked instuctor!
