Does Your Dogma Bite? Probably!
In today's society it is common place to be forced to suffer through an extremist's babble about their causes and religions. "Does Your Dogma Bite" takes an anti-special interest group approach to the differences of some of the hottest push button topics we face as a society. It gives a hypodermic injection under the topical skin of peoples belief's and forces one to think outside their own "soapboxes". Read it and experience the rush of freedom from complacency. IT IS A MUST READ FOR TODAYS MOVERS AND SHAKERS!!!!

Does Your Dogma Bite: Artifacts, Metafacts, and Symbols
I am a public speaker and a trainer. After about forty pages, I was already recommending this book to audiences, and by the time I was finished I would place it in the top ten books that I've ever read (with the likes of Zig Ziglar, Stephen Covey, Robert Schuller, Tony Robbins, and Shad Helmstetter). This is not a self-help book, nor is it written to entertain. It pushes the reader to examine long-held beliefs only to find that those beliefs might be grounded on false assumptions. It had me laughing one minute and scratching my head the next. The author has an incredible ability to lay out a theoretical framework and at the same time, through HUMOROUS footnotes, convey complex ideas in the simplest terms. As a former Social Studies teacher, I wish that I had read this book while I was teaching; it would have made it much simpler to explain complex concepts in everyday language, and to teach students to look beyond the surface. For example, Aud draws parallels between the temperance movement, Communism, and present-day education in a way that the similarities are obvious.

This is a must read for anyone interested in change, religion, prejudice, the affective aspects of decision-making, etc. If you are going to use it as a book for group discussion, be aware that some references are borderline risque, but in the context of the subject matter, it lightens the content nicely.

My hat is off to the author!

Have read it three times and never wanted to start it!!
This book reads like a novel although it can be Biblically supported. The footnotes are hilarious. What is it about?? Our concept of God, religion, and practical rules for decision making on everything we encounter and struggle through in life, love and our decisions (which we may not have made on our own). I am a cradle born Episcopalian who frequently gets "turned off" by the locked in thinking of some Christians who are more interested in defining "sin" than by looking at the real point of Christianity and our creator's plans for us and our happiness. Just read it and see . . .even and especially if you hate religion. Author is a talented writer, methodical, humorous and a born teacher. Do yourself a favor and read it . . . .entertaining, informative and food for thought. I've never read anything like it, but my copy is already dog-eared! Beware: this is NOT a self-help psychobabble book and you can discuss it at all the holiday parties!

wow
In middle age, life can seem to drag to a halt. Marion Woodman and her coauthors demonstrate that the richest part of inner work is possible when we no longer are focusing most of our energy on the outer world of our families,or our careers. the stories these women tell of their own dream journeys are almost beyond belief, and inspired me to resume dream work i abandoned years ago. the journey never ends, and Leaving My Father's House begins a whole new ring on the spiral to wholeness. my only complaint is that at times the book felt too wordy.

Required Reading For Women (& Men)
If life had a reading list, this book would certainly be on it. Woodman does a supreme job of linking the women's narratives -- clarifying and filling in their experiences in archtypical and Jungian terms -- without dimming the spotlight on their individual experiences.

How long will we live our lives unwhole and blaming others (or even ourselves!) for our unhappiness? Until we all read this book and others like it, I'd guess.

An honest and heartfelt look at woman's path.
With this book, Marion Woodman guides us through a complex and difficult journey. Her work with women through the often painful and lonely process of coming into their own life is shared with wisdom, compassion and deep love. I have found this book to be fundamental to my growth and my process. The women who shared their stories have enriched my life and have helped guide me on my way. I've given this book as a gift to many women friends, and I feel it can be a helpful and useful tool for anyone embarking on the inner journey.

This book has been my daily study guide for 25 years
I rely on this book, it has been my companion for many years everywhere I go. I have given away dozens of copies, in various printings, to friends and foe.

What makes this 'pocket classic' edition special is the package: it is tiny. It really does fit in a small pocket; it is about the size of a deck of cards (I think - it has been a long time since I have seen a deck of cards!). But despite its minuscule size, it is easy to read, the print is clear and simple.

The content, too, is clear and simple. The Path of the Warrior is a way of being in the worl. It is not a religion, but a path to spirit. It is said to be very old (from well before Buddhism) and it is completely contemporaneous.

If your eyes are not as good as they were or as they should be, you should buy the more normal size book. But, definitely, buy it! It will change your life.

If you are reading this now then your search is complete.
"The Shambhala teachings are founded on the premise that there is basic human wisdom that can help to solve the world's problems. This wisdom does not belong to any one culture or religion, nor does it come only from the West or the East. Rather, it is a tradition of human warriorship that has existed in many cultures at many times throughout history". - Chogyam Trungpa

The book looks at the principles of warriorship, and this is non-aggressive, no swords and daggers here.

I read this book and it was like having spent my whole life walking from place to place. Then one day being given a bicycle to travel around. And one night, whilst asleep, dreaming of the awesome speed I was now able to travel at, someone sneaks into my garage and fits a turbo charged, jet powered, rocket engine.

I would recommend this book to anyone, and have been doing, if you are reading this now then your search is complete, there is no need to go any further. Put it in your shopping basket and get ready for the rollercoaster ride of your life.

Shambhala--The Sacred Path of the Warrior+++
"In this practical guide to enlightened living, Chogyam Trungpa offers an inspiring vision for our time, based on the figure of the sacred warrior. In ancient times, the warrior learned to master the challenges of life, both on and off the battlefield. He acquired a sense of personal freedom and power--not through violence or aggression, but through gentleness, courage, and self-knowledge. The Japanese samurai, the warrior-kings of Tibet, the knights of medieval Europe, and the warriors of the Native American tribes are a few examples of this universal tradition of wisdom."+++

Wisdom from the inner life in Jung's own words
These writings come straight from Jung's own inner experience and it is his last book before his death in 1961. I have read and re-read this work because at different times in my life I needed to re-evaluate where I was and where I was going. Other books by Jung are more intellectual and scientific, whereas, this autobiography has the wisdom of a person in the later part of life and it was written not so much to teach but to leave with us his legacy. Having myself had a near death experience, I was especially re-affirmed by Jung's own near death experience and his dealings with this phenomenon. His acceptance of his own humanity and his returning from this state to share with us his knowledge and vision is a gift to all of us. It is not easy to return to our humanity and deal with the sufferings we encounter but growth is the only evidence of life. We have to come down from the mountain top and work in the valley. This brings to mind two books written by Hannah Hurnard called Mountains of Spices and Hinds Feet in High Places. Allegories about living our lives with others and not in solitude. Solitude is a wonderful place but if we stay too long we become self-centered, afraid to reach out to others. Another author who gives a good perspective on life is Henri Nouwen and his books Out of Solitude and Reaching Out.

This is it
If you're going to purchase one book about the Swiss psychologist C. G. Jung, this is it. Jung takes the reader on a journey through an ambivalently painful and inspired life, and shares a mine of accumulated learning and insight along the way. Jung is a multifaceted person. The age-old quest for meaning through self-knowledge isn't new to him. The account reveals how thoroughly Jung acts as a bridge between the ancient and modern, esoteric and scientific traditions. But above all, it's Jung's sincerity that places this highly readable book at the top of our list.

Pure Genius
When I first started reading this book, I was highly naïve as to what my possible reactions could be. I never realized that this book would spark an internal flame within me, causing me to yearn for more knowledge and a broader insight into many subjects. It even lead me to come to many realizations about myself and my actions that I could never explain, but turned out to be so true and conclusive.
The extremely difficult vocabulary content did not discourage me one bit, it just made my curiosity grow. Jung amazed me with the beauty of his language choice and writing style and further astonished me with this extensive knowledge on so many various subjects and interesting way of interpreting them. Jung constantly referred to literary works and ideas of other authors and always stressed his references. This was perfect because this was the first book that I've ever willingly read from cover to cover in the psychology field, and it gave me an idea of other books like this one that I could read on topics that I liked and could hand-pick.
The book was most interesting knowing that it was written in autobiography-style and at the end of Jung's life, thus giving myself (the reader) his life-experienced and life-proven philosophies. It was a very difficult read but it was well worth it. I could honestly say that sometimes I just couldn't put it down; and no other book has been able to do that for me.

Interesting to the lover of Asian history.
In history most nations are always taking ideas and beliefs from others, even when they don't know it. Japan is no different. Much of the Far East classes in American colleges spend much of their time teaching students about where Japan gets much of its culture, language and traditions.
The Art of War is like everything else that came to Japan. They took it, made it Japanese and used it in the way THEY felt was best. The Art of War soon spread into areas of business and philosophy. The ideas were soon adapted and proved to be useful rules for every walk of Japanese life. It could guide a warrior or help a baker do his best.

Really, a commentary on "A Book of Five Rings"
This is a great book if taken for what it really is, a commentary on Cleary's translation of "A Book of Five Rings" and other material that Cleary has handled. I wish I had read this directly after I had initially read "5 Rings". The latter book is an extremely cold-blooded and dispassionate look at the art of killing. Nevertheless it has had great influence in some Japanese circles. I was extremely put off by it.

"The Japanese Art of War" puts "5 Rings" into its cultural context and compares it with works by other Japanese writers of the same era. It examines the thought and cultural patterns at work during this period and delves into how these patterns have carried over into the present.

If you're looking for a good book on the Samurai, this isn't it. Try Westbrook's "Secrets of the Samurai". But if you want an interesting journey into the realm where Zen and the traditional martial arts of Japan meet, this may be what you're looking for.

What A delight, Clear and concise.I carry it around in my shirt pocket.Do the authors give individual sessions about their book?

"BEAUTY ARISES FROM PRESENCE OF MIND AND SIMPLICITY."
"THOUGH OUR MINDS MAY BE COMPLICATED, BEAUTY IS NOT. WE DON'T HAVE TO STRIVE TO MAKE BEAUTY IN OUR LIVES, OR LOOK FAR TO FIND IT. WHEN THE MIND IS STILL, WE CAN SEE A MAGNIFICENCE IN EVEN THE MOST ORDINARY THINGS--THE VIVIDNESS OF A SUNSET, THE WARMTH OF A SMILE, THE SIMPLICITY OF SERVING A CUP OF TEA. WE CAN SEE NEW LIFE AND GROWTH. EACH THING IS DIFFERENT FROM ALL OTHERS, EACH MOMENT IS UNIQUE." [from page 152.]

Here are the chapters: 1) Discovering the Heart of Meditation 2) Meditation Instructions 3) Difficulties and Hindrances 4) Suffering: The Gateway to Compasion 5) Integrating Practice. (Each chapter is amazing but chapter five to me is the best. I have probably 85% of it highlighted!)

This is a life-changing book. It's small enough to carry on your body and profound enough to envelop in your heart. I will cherish this always. My wish for all who read this is on page 170, paragraph one.

Thank you Joseph and Jack!

A Classic
I was given this book when I was very young and it sat on my shelf for years before I became interested enough to read it. I wish I had picked it up sooner! But then perhaps I needed to mature more before I could appreciate it. I was utterly fascinated (I read this in my teens) and even the historical "textbook" portions captivated me. I love to learn history from fiction, and this did an excellent job - Dutch history and culture came alive. I have re-read it several times since, and no Disney move can do justice to the book. (Well, I don't believe any movie can really do justice to a book.) The characters are real and we easily empathize with them, the adventure is exciting and the climax of the race does not disappoint. It should be in every child's library.

a wonderful book
Hans Brinker or the Silver Skates is one of the best books I've ever read. It is one of the only books that has ever made me cry. This book uses some Dutch words. Next to the word there is sometimes a small 1 telling you at the bottom of the page is a definition. For example in one sentence it says: Lets go get some 1. Tiffen. At the bottom of the page it says something like: 1 Tiffen - lunch.

Hans Brinker and his sister Gretel have been living with their mother who has spent the last ten years caring for their father who got what you could kind of call amnesia while out on the dykes. He has no memory and has sometimes done awful things without realizing it.

Suddenly the Brinker's luck begins to change and they have happiness as well as some pain.

An American Masterpiece!
I first read this book as a boy in the fourth grade more than forty years ago. I loved it then and I love it more even now. Skating on canals is always great fun! Frankly, it was a new book that got me thinking about this old classic. "Santa & Pete: A Novel of Christmas Present and Past" came out last year and it is a wonderful retelling of the Saint Nicholas story, which is also an important part of "Hans Brinker." And so Santa and Pete got me thinking about Hans and those silver skates. I don't want anyone to touch Mary Dodge's work but can't we find some way to get "new" writers to revive these great old stories.

Um¿
Hey, I'm an archetype anyway you slice it. Prodigal, jester, shaman, wanderer-it's all in there. I have made millions of dollars from ideas that come to me in dreams. Jung would laugh at this book. Believe me. Look inside yourself. And laugh.

Loopy cubed
Jung is loopy. Jungian psychology is loopy. Jungian psychologists are loopy. It surprises me that people take this stuff as seriously as they do. Maybe there's a good Jungian explanation for that too. That said, Jung was, in my opinion, the Wagner of early psychology, and, like Wagnerian opera, there's a lot to be learned by mulling over some of the ideas presented therein. But remember, Jung was more of a Romantic philosopher than a psychologist. Colorful stuff. Just don't take it too seriously.

Woodman at her best
This book has gone a long way toward helping me bring some key issues in my life and dreams to consciousness. Having read a lot of Woodman's writings, I'd have to say this may be her key book.

After reading the review written by the reviewer below I'm reminded of the fact that the Jungian way of thinking is not for everyone. Those who tend to take life events, stories, dreams, and personalities literally will probably think this book is loopy. However, I have found that the use of archetypal images and themes in exploring my life goes a long way toward getting at the depths of who I am without explaining away the mystery or reducing myself to a one-dimensional being.

Woodman is a brilliant archetypal thinker. This book is so dense with good stuff that it is impossible to absorb it all in one or even two readings. Well worth having around to read over and over again

Not complete, but still useful
Contrary to the impression its packaging may give, this book doesn't present anything like a complete guide to developing communication skills for children with autism. Instead, what it describes is one technique to build simple interactive games to help begin communication with children with limited language.

However, this can be valuable for many children, and the book is clear and helpfully illustrated with photo examples of real-life games. So I'd recommend it on that basis.
