Les Aventures de Tintin: Tintin au Pays de l'Or Noir (French Edition of Land of the Black Gold)

Watch out!
Note that this is the 3rd edition, which had deleted the historical references to 1948 Palestine which were in the 1st (B&W) & second (color) editions. This makes it less interesting. The earlier eds were more interesting because of their historical content, like the Blue Lotus. Unfortunately, I don't know where to find them.

Tintin is just wonderful
This is a splendid book. Beginning with the slightly dimwitted but highly amusing antics of Thomson and Thompson, and ending with one of Abdullah's pranks, it is filled with all the adventure and humour characteristic of the Tintin books. It's wonderful and I recommend it to all.

Tintin heads to Tibet to rescue his friend Chang
Tintin and Milou were created in 1929 by Georges Remi (a.k.a. Hergé). In 1934 Hergé met a young Chinese student, Chang Chong-Chen, at which point Tintin's creator became convinced of the importance of having a soundly built storyline and getting the facts straight. In short, Hergé started taking his craft very seriously. After the Communists took over China, Hergé and Chang lost touch. In 1960 "Tintin Au Tibet" ("Tintin in Tibet") was published and it was immediately clear that this was a very personal story for Hergé, who was writing about his friendship with a friend he had not seen in decades.

Tintin has a dream about Chang, the boy he made friends with in China in "Le Lotus Bleu " ("The Blue Lotus"). Chang is lying in the snow, half buried, holding out his hands and calling to Tintin to help him. When Tintin gets a letter from Change he is surprised at the remarkable coincidence, but then he reads in the newspaper that Chang's plane has crashed in Tibet. Tintin, convinced his friend is not dead, goes off to save his friend.

There are none of the traditional villains in this rather special Tintin story in which our hero is aided only by Milu and Captain Haddock (with a brief appearance by Professor Tournesol). "Tintin Au Tibet" is a fairly straightforward rescue adventure, with the determined Tintin overcoming any and all obstacles placed in his way by man and nature. This is arguably the most poignant Tintin adventure, focusing on the power of loyalty and hope overcoming all obstacles and Hergé places a lot of obstacles in Tintin's way. I think what I like most about this story is about how Hergé keeps what are essentially a series of cliffhangers going and going but in a realistic manner, while still working in the series trademark humor with Milou and the Captain. "Tintin Au Tibet" is an atypical Tintin adventure, but that just makes it all the more special.

How did the real story end? In 1981 Hergé and Chang Chong-Chen were happily reunited.

OF COURSE !
Tintin au Tibet is one of Hergé's best books. Full of suspense, emotion, beautiful drawings and the abominable Yeti. Do read it, and, please, try to read it in French : Hergé's language is both precise and easy to understand. Enjoy !

Hi Mom! Great book!
Hi, I'm Lisa, Ms. Grecos daughter. I designed the cover.(hope you like it!) Anyway, I think the book is good, it has hard facts and great tips to help you in getting the right nanny.

Joyce's Review
I have read other books on how to find childcare help. This book totally covered every aspect of this process for me. The author discusses things in her book that I never would have even thought of, some of which are so crucial in my search for the best childcare for my children. Before reading this extremely informative book, I thought I would ask some basic questions of my perspective nanny. After reading this book, I realized that all I had to do was open this book and follow what the author said. Ms. Greco has completely covered every detail for me.

First you're probably going to want to read the first book in the series (Pont-Au-Change: Resurrections). Then come back and read this. But, if you've found this page because you like Les Miserables (the original novel or the musical), or you like historical fiction and are wondering if the books is worth buying, yeah, it is. Particularly for anyone who 1) loves the story of Les Miserables and its characters, and 2) doesn't mind some respectful, good-natured revisionism, similar to that found in other "spin-off" books such as Micholas Meyer's Seven Per-Cent Solution. Not only are many of the original's characters around (and still recognizably themselves and in character), some of Hugo's themes--revolution, conscience, forgiveness--are, too. In other words, if you've suffered from Cosette, the rotten 80s Les Mis "sequel," fear not; this ain't another Cosette. The novel takes place in France, where Marius and Cosette find themselves learning about Cosette's past in Montreuil-sur-Mer, the town that Jean Valjean was mayor of years before; in England where Jean Valjean and his traveling companion, Javert (whose "resurection" the first book is concerned with), have fled to avoid their pasts; and in French Canada, where the two eventually wind up. In Quebec they run into a fledgling rebellion against the British and become embroiled in it when they aid a brother and sister who were orphaned in the fighting. The novel's original (non-Hugo) characters are engaging--in addition to the two children, we meet a priest who is forced to take sides in the rebellion and his nephew who gets to fall in love. The historic backdrop is well researched and feels authentic, and there are both quieter, thoughtful moments and exciting, suspensful sequences. Overall, a most enjoyable read.

Pont au Change, Book Two: Sanctuary
This book is a must read if you've read the first book! It is very well written, a lot of research has undoubtedly gone into this book. Definitely keeps the reader "on edge of seat"! This book does no disgrace to Victor Hugo.

Au clair de la Lune, mon ami Simon...
With a good rhythm and a simple text, Gilles Tibo introduces us to the worries of the little Simon who sees his beloved moon disappearing... Will he be able to save the moon? The young ones will love this book which translates so well the emotional turmoils of a 3 to 4 years old boy.
The text is simple and short and thus readable by young readers.
The illustrations are beautiful and translate the story really well. The graphic evolution of the moon is obvious throughout the book and shows well the moon cycle, a good pedagogic opportunity. This is also an excellent book to use in English as a foreign language classes. The illustrations are good support material that can be accompanied by the acting of a parent or of an instructor.
The intervention of Pierrot is also a good opportunity to introduce, if it's not already done, his very popular song "Au clair de la Lune, mon ami Pierrot..."

Sweet, Simple Book about the Phases of the Moon...
Young Simon notes that the moon is changing, and with his friend Marlene he tries to 'rescue' the moon. When it disappears, he writes the moon a poem, and watches as the moon returns.

This is a sweet, simple book about a boy who is fascinated with the waning moon. The text is easy and has an almost lyrical quality which is enhanced by the artwork. The illustations are magical with a full-size colour page on each right hand side, and on the left a small frame of the same pulls together the text and pictures.

A wonderful book for children who are naturally drawn to the moon, as many children are (my three year old son among them!). A good book for those families who celebrate the lunar cycle.

Au Bonheur Des Ogres
Published in Unknown Binding by Editions Flammarion ()
Author: Pennac

Average review score:

Great style, great suspense, wonderful characters.
This is the first of four books, all built around Benjamin Malaussene, a man whose job is to be blamed for everything that goes wrong at work. Every time a client complaints, the staff somehow blames it on him: he is known to his coworkers as a professional scapegoat.

However, when the store he works at is the host of a bomb, then another, people start to point fingers, and this novel develops around this plot made of bombs and scapegoating.

This novel is worth everyone's full attention: the characters are very believable, and the way they relate to each other is nothing short of sublime. Also, Pennac's frequent use of sarcasm and bitter wit adds to the punch of the novel, where it comes to a point where, even though you want to know how it ends (just like every good police intrigue novel), you can't get enough of the dialogues and discussions.

Open this book and sit back, because this book is like no other whodunnit novel. (In fact, it's almost insulting to call it that.)

Au Chateau d Argol

Author: Julien Gracq
Amazon base price: $15.00
Average review score:

Traveling without moving.
For whom would like this experience of traveling without moving, this book seems the most appropriate device. Jump into the mysterious world of Argol, a mix of a Gothic Novel atmosphere, of medieval remembrances, of a modern tragedy in a both contemporary and oriental design. This three characters drama - a "huis-clos", we should say - takes place in a world which could't be identified as of any time, neither space. Nevertheless, one can't help a feeling of knowing this place - but where ? In this setting, three characters, two men and a woman, meet. Of their relationship, nothing is clearly established. These three friends, two of which are visiting the other for an indecise amount of time, seem to interact through electric fluids, in a surrealistic sort of communication that overwhelms dialogue and creates a delightful sensation to the reader, both surprised and attracted. I myself felt this magnetism that surounds the characters. It is a disturbing strangeness, without any of the obviously violent treatment of a ghost story or of a thriller : just the sweetness of Britany and a total absence of worry, like in a dreamed holyday time.

Au Naturel: The History of Nudism in Canada
Published in Paperback by Federation of Canadian Naturists (25 April, 2003)
Author: James Woycke
Amazon base price: $19.95
Average review score:

a fine overview of the history of Canadian nudism
Woycke's book is the only developed discussion of the history of Canadian nudism available in English. He provides a detailed account of the development of nudist clubs and clothing-optional beaches across Canada. Not a naturist himself, he has no particular agenda, other than to present a scholarly and readable history of non-sexualized social nudity in Canada. The footnotes took up nearly half of the original manuscript, so the publisher decided to place them online free of charge, rather than to include them with the text. "Au Naturel: The History of Nudism in Canada" is on a par with Cec Cinder's "The Nudist Idea" from Ultraviolet Press. Together, they give an accurate and informative portrayal of the quirkly world of nudism in North America.
