COULD HAVE BEEN MUCH BETTER
I have little UNIX or Solaris experience, so for me this book provided a spotty overview of the Solaris 8 O/S. It didn't provide an overall perspective of Solaris, tying all the pieces together to form a complete picture. It would have been great if the authors listed out the applications that come with Solaris (there are a truck load); it would have been even better if they detailed some of them. For those of us that don't have time to read through an author's opinions, this text leaves much to be desired.

Great Book for beginer's and a Excellent reference for Pro's
Great Book for beginner's and a Excellent reference for Pro's.
The chapter to chapter sequence is just right for the topic(Solaris).

Like a good expresso
Hi

If you have basic Unix knowledge and If you want learn to how to manage a Solaris box, you have to buy it.

Good introduction for Solaris Administration.

ASE Automobile Test Readiness Series : Brakes - A5

A good book for most
This is a good book for anyone who already has a fair understanding of the hydrolic break system and how it works. It has a margin at the edge of the pages for writing notes, about 2 inches. There is a vidio tape that acompanies this book for those who can't visualize any given break component. (YOU MUST BUY THIS SEPARATELY!) I did'nt see where to buy the vidio. However this did not make the book any less usefull to me. I may have more initial subject knowledge than some who will buy this book. There are only a few diagrams and illustrations. It's still a good book.

When is a 2K page > 2048 bytes?
Come on guys.... "Each chapter has passed through the hands of at least five experienced database administrators." [in Preface]
and I only have to get to page 12 to find none of you can explain the true page sizes for 2K APL & DOL pages......

Could the remaining chapters pass through your hands again after the editors had their chance? Please don't be like the so called Oracle book writers - you are better than that. Sure it is rather picky, but can I trust the rest of the information?

An excellent resource
This book answers all the really tough questions in very clear and simple ways. Much of the info in this book is the sort of stuff you're only lucky enough to get if you happen to have a Sybase performance expert onsite. If you've ever found yourself with a really tricky performance question you know what a good thing it is to find information about Sybase monitoring tools and performance troubleshooting all in a single book. This book appears to have been written by people with much experience in troubleshooting performance problems and the advice is about the best you're going to get anywhere.

ASE Test Prep Series -- Automobile (A2): Automotive Transmis
I found this book very poor in that there are numerous typographical errors, cross referances to non existing paragraphs and referances from the sample test questions to paragraphs that had no information that pertained to the question! The book does not appear to have been proof read at all and was of poor quality and limited content. I would stay away from this book if you are taking the ASE certification test as it was not as helpfull as I expected.

Excellent Guides
All the Delmar ASE test prep books for Automotive/Light Duty exams are excellent! I answered at least 90% of the questions correctly on every exam for which I used the Delmar guides. As an automotive instructor, I recommend this guide to all my students who plan to take the ASE Automotive exams, and I use some questions from the guides in making my own exams for class. Great study guide!!!

ASE L1 Preparation Guide
This book will help with the test. Do be cautious when reading the explanations, I have found some holes in the explanations. Some of the problems presented in the questions are out there and in my opinion are probably once in a career type of encounters. The majority of questions are very helpful and the author is knowledgable.

Just like the test, but no theory to study
This book has a bunch of questions, just like the actual test. It will give you the answer to each question along with an explanation. Down side is there is no theory on emmisions operation. I do not reccomend it for someone who has yet to pass the test. Thoery is the key to passing the L1 test. This book will not provide that service.

The book has several faults, no answers for questions, wrong or left out wiring diagram information. The book just does not reflect the true ASE test.

Below expectations
I just took the A7 test and found myself unprepared for some of the questions. This book gives you a decent overview of the basics, but there are some diagnosis senarios on the actual test that this book does not cover. The book is organized by the ASE task lists with many redundancies in the text when the tasks require similar knowledge. I expected this new edition to give me sample questions very similar to the current test. The practice tests in this book seem based more on the book than the real test. One might do well taking the sample tests if they read the book, but have a problem with some questions on the actual test that the book did not prepare you for.

Beginner and Worthless Book
The problem with Sybase is you have to wait 5 or 6 years before a book is released unlike Oracle which releases books every month or so. After years of waiting we get this worthless book

There is nothing meaty in this book. The author did a much better job in the Sybase 11 book.

Read the Sybase manuals since that's your only source unfortunately because no publisher is excited about Sybase :-(

Yes, useful for sybase starter
As an Oracle DBA, I simply want to find something to start, like Oracle's online Concept book or handful of other books out there. But there isn't anything in Sybase documentations nor many choices of books: DBA guide written like ref manual, replication guide however is OK to start. This book at least can get me started as one piece, more systematically, not one bit here and the other bit there. Although it is skin deep and probably should call Sybase Administrator 202, I still find it very useful to start with. Output and query results really helps me sit and read through the book, focuing, not having to type while you read

Very Useful
Unlike the other reviews I have read, I found the book to be useful and informative. Some of the newer features (eg, dbccdb) are covered in some detail while others are not. To be fair, the book isn't supposed to be just about brand new 12.5 features, rather an administration guide to 12.5. The difference may appear small, but it is large enough to commend the authors on a job well done.

The book does cover database administration of Sybase very well. My one complaint is that some of the formatting of figures is off, which might lead a newer DBA to be confused over some of the results. Nevertheless, I have found it an excellent reference manual, as well as a teaching tool, having discovered some things about ASE that I was not aware of. While online manuals are good, there's nothing better than having a book in front of you to read from cover to cover.
