American Business English

The best business correspondence book around!
I bought this book three years ago and haven't found a better book to teach business writing with. Ms. Bartell covers everything from from from pre-writing to writing long reports. The writing is clear and concise, as good writing should be, and presents old information in new and interesting ways. When I have grammar questions, I look here before I pull out my Strunk and White's, because Ms. Bartell's explantions are more reader friendly. I recommend it to all of my business English students. Not only can this book be used for business writing, it would benefit any student of English writing.

The title of the book is a little misleading. It doesn't deal with other business English topics, such as telephoning, meetings(except for minutes and agendas), negotiations, or social English. But it is The Best Book I've seen on business writing. If I could have given it more than five stars, I would have.

A Pleasant Surprise
I have received my graduate education in the United States. Certainly, I've been exposed to various aspects of American history; however, I've never taken an American history class. Therefore, I was looking for a book that could connect the facts, fill in the gaps, and give a coherent overview of the history of the United States. This inexpensive book has exceeded all my expectations. It can be read in a few afternoons, and it presents facts in such an engaging way that they stick in your mind almost effortlessly. Most importantly, it builds an instant conceptual framework. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who came to the U.S. from another country and wants to consider himself/herself an educated person, but has no intention to study American history in detail. I'm not sure this is the author's fault, but I found the description of the last few decades depressing. I thought it was only the last three years. Anyway, I'm optimistic that one day this country will again be the world's beacon of wisdom and truth.

American Legal English: Using Language in Legal Contexts
Published in Paperback by University of Michigan Press (November, 1999)
Authors: Debra S. Lee, Charles Hall, and Marsha Hurley
Amazon base price: $14.95

An excellent advanced course in legal English
This is one of the finest ESP books I have used. The book provides not only a basic introduction to the American legal system but also a large number of advanced language exercises based on real cases and legal texts. The exercises are intellectually engaging and the presentation of language problems is thorough and honorable.

A Nation of Riflemen
This NRA publication is a collection of articles reprinted from the NRA's American Rifleman magazine during WWII. The articles deal with the various rifles used by Americans as well as her allies and enemies. Several articles dealt with actual combat situations in Europe and the Pacific where riflemen rose to the occasion to lead the way to victory. Other articles emphasized the fact that many US soldiers were so effective because of their pre-war experiences with rifle shooting and hunting. If you want to experience wartime patriotism at its finest, this reprint collection is just the type of writing to read.

American Women Playwrights, 1900-1950
Published in Paperback by Peter Lang Publishing (December, 1995)
Author: Yvonne Shafer
Amazon base price: $34.95
Since the 1950s a whole generation of women playwrights has come to the fore--three won Pulitzers in the 1980s. But lest we mistake the time before that as a boys-only wasteland, Women Playwrights reminds us of 35 important female dramatists. Editor Yvonne Shafer puts the obvious--Edna Ferber, Lillian Hellman, Gertrude Stein, and Dorothy Parker--alongside such idiosyncratic talents as Claire Kummer, who wrote absurdist comedies, and Josephine Preston Peabody, who wrote in verse. The book cries out for a production list for each author, but we do get perceptive biographical essays that put their work in the context of their lives, and their lives in the context of their times.

Much Needed & Lively Resource
There are not many (maybe none!) other books on the subject of American Women playwrights from the first half of the last century...so this is a much needed and very valuable guide to some overlooked talents. The text is filled with interesting and lively anecdotes, as well as solidly researched facts that would be invaluable to scholars, teachers or anyone with an interest in the subject matter.

A beautiful companion to the 1976 film
ANAIS NIN OBSERVED is a companion to the 1976 film of the same name. It is 115 pages of dialogue from the movie, text from Anais Nin's diaries, and black-and-white pictures of Anais Nin and the people in her life, as well as her greatest influences (Henry Miller, Antonin Artaud, Martha Graham, etc.). We also get pictures of Nin from her early childhood up to her days in the limelight as a famous diarist, author, and college lecturer. And that is my favorite part of the book: the portrayal of Anais Nin as a popular college lecturer. One of the first pictures we get is a full length portrait of her standing on stage before an audience at UC Berkeley in the late 1970s. This is a woman who began her literary career in the 1930s in a small town outside of Paris. She was ignored by the literary world for three decades. Finally, she got the acclaim she'd always desired. I find that very moving. Oh, how I would have loved to have been one of the dozen or so students who got to visit her home and sit on the plush pillows on her livingroom floor and talk about literature (picture enclosed). The pictures of a solitary Nin in her Zen garden are equally poignant.

BLOODSUCKING GHOULS
This is the first book in Mr. Doherty's Canterbury Tales type stories. The Knight tells a tale of vampires and strigoi(shapechangers) set in the city of Oxford, England. Students come up missing, towns people are found dead with their throats ripped open and the King sends out his Knight Sir Godfrey and his clerk Alexander McBain to ferret out the evil doers. Sir Godfrey comes up against an ancient evil that had supposedly been taken care of two hundred years earlier.

This novel is full of enough medieval history, blood sucking monsters and mystery to keep the most ardent reader of historical mysteries engrossed.

Africa
Having moved from Africa to New York I miss the lyrical poetry of Breyten as much as sunsets, dust and moskonfyt. A true South African hero and visionary he deserves the every accolade. I wish more readers could read him in Afrikaans, the language in which his poetry is elevated to the sublime.
