Jill Ker Conway (The Road from Coorain ) edits this sterling selection of autobiographical excerpts by 25 American women. Among them are artists, scientists, doctors, writers, and reformers, all well chosen though not necessarily well known. Physician Anne Walter Fearn writes of decades dispensing Western medicine in China and struggling with her husband, a God-fearing medical missionary who was "born to give orders just as definitely as I was born not to take them." The heart-rending narrative of former slave Harriet Ann Jacob, who tells of abortive and finally successful attempts to free herself and her children segues into Maya Angelou's more widely read contemporary account of doggedly soliciting sex as a teen uncertain of her sexual identity and hoping to be ushered into "that strange and exotic land of frills and femininity."

Powerful and inspirational

I discovered this book on my own, no one told me about it. I bought it mostly on the strength of Jill Ker Conway's writings. I trust her judgement.
This book is now at the top of my favorites. It is a compilation of twenty-five autobigraphical sketches, written with truth, genius and verve, each one of them. I had to take them one at a time, letting each one digest before I went on. Each time I thought, phew, the next one won't match up and yet it did. The voices and stories are extraordinary. I am going to buy it as a gift over and over again. It is more than a jewel. It is a necklace of gems.

Brilliant compilation of women's stories

Jill Ker Conway is a good writer and editor. She has collected here a group of American women's stories, all of which are fascinating. Before each memoir, she writes a short explanation, but it is the women's stories that stick with you. The ones that stuck with me most were the one of the escaping slave woman, who hid in an attic crawl space for almost a year, so desperate was she for freedom -- and the one written by Margaret Sanger. I give this book frequently as a gift to young women -- for Bat Mitzvah, graduation, to mark some important milestone in their lives. By reading about other women's struggles to define their lives, you learn more about your own.

I CAN FINALLY UNDERSTAND AMERICANS!

I've been a student studying English for many years, but had difficulty understanding American people and American Movies and TV.This book really helped me to understand real American English. The stories are fun to read, so I don't feel like I'm studying... Just having fun. Anyone who wants to understand real American English should buy this book.

Fresh ESL fun!!

I have used most of the slang/ idiom books out there in the market, but none of them have been as up-to-date, well-organized and informative as this! My students loved all of the conversation questions. They keep begging me for more. The dictionary section is especially helpful as it contains info about any and every question students may come up with! I also love how straightforward it is.

Thoughtful Education

Even though the title of this book indicates an emphasis in early childhood education, any teacher can find useful, thought provoking ideas. It is well written, to the point and for teachers who believe that children construct their own knowledge, very supportive. I believe the ideas in the book can apply to any area of teaching.

A Science Teachers Dream!

This book is perfect for an elementary school teacher or science teacher. The book talks about the underlying processes that enable each child to learn in their own unique way. Teachers can take the information presented in this book and prepare science lessons that support the learning capabilities of the children. This book also presents numerous case studies and scenarios that give readers a variety of lesson plan ideas while at the same time explain HOW AND WHY the lesson plans best support the children. I am an education major and have found this book to be a wonderful resource for my studies. I know that I will also use this book when I become a teacher and need to put some wonderful ideas into practice.

A Young Patriot

I am 13 years old and i absolutly love this book, Murphy (the author) describes the American Revolution so clearly that u actually feel like you are in the story! This book is about a boy named Joseph who signs up to be in the Continental Army, he goes through hard times and good times as well! I would say any history fan would love this book!!!!

This is a great book!

I'm 12 years-old and I thought this story was very exciting. My older brother read it also, and he said it was great. It is about a fifteen-year-old boy who is eager to go to war. However, it ends up being the most horrifying life a young man could have. I would give six stars if I could. Since I can't, I'll write it down: six stars!

Best book on teenage pregnancy

What a subtle, beautiful, thought-provoking book. Indispensible for understanding how teenage pregnancy shapes the lives of young people. Offers a poignant view of a variety of American teens facing parenthood, of different classes, different races, different religions and regions. Would be particularly valuable for high-school researchers, or as a complement to drier, more statistical or policy-oriented analyses.

This book was written in an easy to read format and answers most of the common questions anyone would have upon buying an iguana for the first time.I would recommend purchasing this book if you are thinking about buying an iguana.

Raising my iguannas

I am a proud owner of six iguannas. I had a hard time finding a book that was as infomative as Ms. Dolly Ellerbrocks book. This book has helped me raise 6 healthy iguannas ranging in size from 5' to 3'. The training section in the book was great, everyone doubted me, that this couldn't be done, but I did it with the help of this book. This book helped me to diagnose and treat symptoms of the iguanna. I have not been able to find another book with as much information as this great book. Thank you Ms. Ellerbrock for your wisdom, and Rosie, Destroyer, Iggy, Pluto, Jupiter, and Mercury thank you too!

Great for Brainstorming Profitable Ideas

Lilly Walters has assembled a collection of terrific ways to create new income streams, get more bookings, generate publicity and more. The book is a series of short tips and ideas that got my brain popping. A quick perusal left my copy dotted with sticky notes marking pages containing ideas I can use now and in the future. I am currently working through the book, a section at a time, putting the tips into action.

Although absolute beginners may want more detail for some tips, wherever you are in your speaking career you will certainly find some gems to help you become a better, more successful (and profitable!) speaker. Beginners looking for more information should also read "Speak and Grow Rich" and other excellent books on building a speaking career.

A good source for tests on grammar for the ESL student

This book contains 1000 Grammar Tests that are easily reproduced for classroom use. These tests follow the sequence given in the authors series of Clear Grammar books but can easily be adapted to any lessons given on grammar. Each chapter has tests on a particular grammar point and at least two types of tests. (Multiple choice, fill in the blanks, sentence writing etc) This book and his series are designed for the beginner and intermediate ESL student but can easily be used in any school setting. Tests follow the same chapter sequence as the Clear Grammar Series but you can also look up tests by the grammar point you wish to test. This book does not teach any grammar points, it is simply a book of tests to help the teacher evaluate and re-inforce the information taught.

Helpful for ANY age new Christian

A friend of mine lent me this book. I am a new Christian, and I didn't understand how I should feel different. Although the teen context didn't interest me, the content did, and I really started understanding. For instance, that faith is a decision, not a feeling, based on knowledge. The feeling of faith comes in time, but its absence at any time does not indicate you do not have faith. This book has really helped me sort through and understand what my expectations should be, especially in the beginning of my walk with the Lord.
