This book was interesting from the start. I couldn't put it down. I laughed and cried with the main character and was totally taken into the personal problems of the family and the cultural climate the story was written in. The main characters growth and struggles as a young boy touched my heart and opened my eyes to a totally different world of poverty, discrimination, and what it must have been like growing up in the South during the years before world war 2. I passed this book along to many friends who all are waiting with great anticipation for another book from this author.

I thought this was a fantastic book. The end of each chapter makes you want to read the next one. When the author writes another book, I'll be first in line to get an autographed copy.

I first came upon this book in a senior seminar in college. At the time I apppreciated it for the varying voices of women. I was able to see women like and unlike myself and be warmed by the fire of this sisterhood. I had no idea that when I wrote my Master's thesis how important this text would be. Unfortunately there are few anthologies like this one that covers so many bases so effectively. Madison has collected well known and lesser known talents into an invaluable research tool. It should be required reading for anyone interested in stepping into the world of writing by women of color.

Lang-Peralta points out that novels of the 1790s have extravagant and marvelous shapes. Many of these novels are only now being treated to scholarly editions (and expanded readership). For someone with no formal instruction in philosophy this is a very good book to begin with. Schopenhauer avoids the use of pretensious "philosophical" jargon and writes in a predominantly literary fashion.

The main value in this book is its ideas. Its basic premis is simple, yet the range of topics that Schopenhauer delivers treatises on is quite astounding - art, gambling, contract theory, sexual love and ascetic renunciation, to mention but a few. Only a man of his genius could have found a thread to link these diverse topics together. One does, however, sense at times that he distorts his philospophical beliefs in order to express his revulsion about his least favourite types of human activity.

I found the discussions on art the most insightful and rewarding. The book is a good dissection of the blind striving and willing of our world and has the potential to alter the way you view the nature of things.

WWI is a pure joy to read. Scopenhauer tackles metaphysical questions with clarity, wit, and style. His insights are both profound and illuminating, but patience is needed. Several readings may be necessary to fully grasp his ideas, but it is worth the extra effort. Schopenhauer is the rare thinker who can change the way you see the world.

While it is not necessary to have read Plato, Hume or Kant before reading WWI, I would at the very least, read some secondary literature on those thinkers before starting a journey with Schopenhauer.

The Everyman version is a great introduction to WWI. It cuts the fat but leaves the substance of the ideas intact. Prepare to meet pure genius!

A friend showed me this book AFTER I had already done a tour as a teacher in Korea. I wish I had read it before I went. Powell gives a lot of practical information on the process of getting a job without getting scammed but the parts I enjoyed most were the stories he told about the people and situations he has experienced. He has taught in several countries and some of the cultural comparisons are downright profound. I came back to the states after a tour but reading this book makes me wish I had made a career of it.
This book would make a perfect college graduation present- give it to that young man or woman who you fear is about to do something really boring with their life- it may plant a seed in their head and give them a lot of memories

I should have read this book BEFORE teaching English in Taiwan. This is the best guidebook about teaching English in a foreign country. I am from South Africa and I did a lot of research before coming to Taiwan. I have travelled before, but I didn't know anything about teaching, working hours, contracts, recruitors, etc. If I had read this book beforehand, I would have been better prepared for my teaching experience in Taiwan. (Believe me, I've learned the hard (and expensive) way!) Everyone interested in teaching English in a foreign country MUST read this book. This will save you a lot of trouble and money!

This is must reading (or gazing) for any serious student of Proust's IN SEARCH OF LOST TIME. Photographer Paul Nadar was a photographer for whom at one time or another virtually every member of Proust's social set and family sat for at one point or another. The value of this volume for someone reading Proust is twofold: allowing one to see high quality photographic reproductions of many of the actual models for Proust's characters, and providing a vivid picture of the way these people dressed, how they wore their hair, some of their cultural preoccupations, and what their favored accessories were.

I am not a fan of any method of reading Proust that degenerates into a study of Proust's life, that is more concerned with figuring out who the "real" Odette or Albertine or Saint-Loup was. The "real" Odette was a fictional creation by a literary genius of the first rank, and she cannot be found in any of these photographs. Not even in gazing at a photography of Robert de Montesquiou do we see Baron de Charlus, despite our knowledge that he was Proust's most important model for Charlus. But looking at these photographs breaks down the distance between Proust's world and our own. Odette may be based on several real life models, but it is helpful to know what the women that Proust knew looked like in forming our own mental picture of Odette or Gilberte or Oriane or Saint-Loup. I also find it much easier to imagine visually Proust's world after seeing precisely how those members of his social set dressed.

The book also has a great deal to teach about portrait photography in late 19th and early 20th century Paris, at least in an upper class studio. The range of photographs is fascinating, not merely in the posed photos with the subjects dressed in their finest clothes, but in the ones where various individuals appeared "in costume." This includes not merely a series of marvelous photographs of Sarah Bernhardt dressed as various characters, but men and especially women appearing in amateur theatricals. One section features a many of the more celebrated individuals of the time whom Proust either met or loosely based some of his characters on, such as Bernhardt (La Berma), Anatole France (Bergotte), Faure (Vinteuil, though only musically), and Claude Monet (one of several models for Elstir).

Physically, the book resembles a well-produced art book, with a cloth binding, high quality paper, and the highest quality reproductions. It is easily the most attractive book on Proust I have in my rather large collection of Proust titles. Not just a great book on Proust, but a beautiful one as well.

This is a must for any fan of Proust--you get to see not only what the originals for his most memorable characters (the Ducehsse de Guermantes, Swann, Charlus, Mme. verdurin) looked like, but also the interior of one of the great fin-de-siecle chateaus where one couple (the Prince and Princess Radziwell) lived. The Nadar photographs are sharp, startling and magnificent. I've wanted a book like this for years.

I was most pleased to find this book. Though I am a believer in the Puritans being the pinnacle of christianity I knew that they couldn't be perfect. Mr. Ryken has written a most readable and enjoyable history of the Puritans. He does not shy away from clear problems that they had.

What caught my interest most was his demonstration through his scholarship that society under the Puritan "Ideal" had problems, but was infinitely better off than most other areas in western Europe. John Calvin and his followers in Switzerland were clearly extreme in their use of scriptural discipline. The American Puritans were fanatics of control and discipline. The English Puritans were more well rounded in how they were to effect their society.

With all that said, Mr. Ryken has shown that the Puritans were not only good people, but may have been the true moral fiber of their different cultures. There seems to be an underlying truth that where the Puritans had the most influence, the people were the most safe and taken care of by the clergy.

Were there mistakes in the Puritan movement? Yes, and again I say YES. A mistakeless society or movement is the figment of a deranged imagination or science fiction. The Puritans were human. They did wrong. When they were shown the wrong, from a biblical perspective, they repented and made the change.

Modern revisionist historians have made much of the Puritan intolerence's for many things. If these historians would just read Mr. Ryken's book they would see, if they are honest, that the Puritans were very honorable and did stick to what they truly believed to be true.

I liked this book because it made me admire the Puritans afresh. I now believe that when someone insults me by alluding to my "Puritan" ethics that I am being complemented much more than I deserve. I would hope to live up to such a statement.

This book gives the reader an excellent introduction to ideals of the Puritan movement. It is packed full of quotations since the point of the book is to let the Puritans speak for themselves on selected topics.

This book is an introduction to Puritan thought as a whole, so it does not touch on specific situations. It is very broad and deals with both English and American Puritanism. Though this book is excellent, it should be known by all of you potential buyers that it deals with historical Puritan thought and not with the hard history of facts and events.

Another bonus of this book is that it presents the Puritans in clear light. Dr. Ryken celebrates the Puritan culture but at the same time recognizes that they had clear faults. He includes a whole chapter on things we can learn from the negative examples within Puritanism.

I found inside information in this book that other writers seem reluctant to give out. Mr. Gregg shares it all with his reader. I seriously could have been stuck in my salary range for years if I hadn't taken his advice. Do yourself a favor and buy this book!

It's an excellent resource, particularly in ESL, where writing theory and pedagogy is so poorly documented and researched. I'm sorry that it's out of print.
