this book got me through college
OK, so it wasn't the published version....as a former high school student of the author, I have referred to my tattered and torn copy numerous times over the years. The lessons I learned from this book enabled me to write solid papers not only for undergraduate literature courses, but for graduate business courses as well. It is a highly useful reference for both formal and informal writing -- I find myself referring to the book's principles when writing anything from personal e-mail to office memos. Anyone who follows the guidelines set forth in this book can exponentially improve their writing.

ok--so--i wrote this book
this book is the product of nearly 20 years of teaching high school and college students to write--it is for students and teachers alike--but mainly it is a reference guide for any trying to learn to write--a thing that can only be done by writing itself--and not in a vacuum--i hope you will run across this book in a class--if not--give it a read--by the way--this book about writing is recommended only after you have read great writing--like vonnegut--like kundera--like dickinson--

Highly Recommended
I have been teaching ESL to Spanish speakers and Hebrew speakers for the past 3 years. My students love this book. The vocabulary points are clear and detailed. The exercises are directly relevant to all of the explanation. It is great for teachers in the classroom and for students who want to study on their own.

Exceptional, only by reading you'll believe it
Is an uncommon book that gives you an advanced introduction to most common vocabulary used among the students in North America, giving very good results for those who are learning the english as a second language to access college and studies purposes, enhancing the speech and personal vocabulary.

For many people, Walker Evans's name conjures up visions of the rural American South of the 1930s, where the photographer made some of his most notable images. But signs--marking buildings; advertising grocery prices, churches, and cabarets; communicating political messages--transfixed him throughout his life. Evans was interested in all aspects of signs, from the typography and graphic layout to the messages they conveyed and the objects themselves. He collected nearly as many of them as he photographed and often exhibited actual signs alongside his photos. Andrei Codrescu, in the essay he wrote to accompany the images in Signs, offers a concise explanation of the power of this subject matter. He writes that Evans's era was, "the time of popular writing, of huge advertisements, of lettering that invaded every nook and cranny and even wrote the skyline. America wrote big, with bold new alphabets, in lightbulbs, in neon, in smoke. One could follow the text of twentieth-century America from coast to coast...."

This small book is beautifully designed. The 50 gelatin silver prints selected from the Getty Museum's collection are reproduced on full pages with little or no cropping, and are meticulously documented at the back of the book with notations on dimensions, dates the photos were shot, and printing dates. A wide range of images, from the Photographer's Window Display, in which miniature portraits are displayed behind a pane of glass on which the word studio is painted, to a pair of commercially produced movie posters advertising a double feature of The Man from Guntown and I Hate Women, offers readers perspective on the breadth of Evans's vision. This focused look at an element of Evans's photography helps broaden the understanding of his entire body of work.

Graphics / Black & White fans MUST BUY
Another beautiful collection from Walker Evans, showing his greatest photos of billboards, movie posters, newspaper headlines, theater marquees, graffiti, street signs, hand-painted shop frotns, covering 1920-1975. You will discover variety of ways to interpret the different layers of meanings from his photos with striking impression. It provides an excellent documentary about American culture. Walker Evans also collected and exhibited signs, sometimes next to his photographs, which brings his work into another level. From letters to graphics, from graphics to signs, sometimes people is becoming helpless under the mass media. Highly recommended for graphics / black and white fans.

Just Beautiful!
Walker Evans SIGNS are unique and wonderful. These images glow in there black and white surroundings. Some of the images are simple and delicate and other are busy and loud...a great mixure.Codrescu's essays give you a delightful walk through of Evans life.Andrei has an original insight... description of these signs from our past. There is excitment in these essays...energy in which Evans must have had as he photographed these images. As you read on you will see Evans attraction to signs. I also enjoyed the layout of the book. The images have room to breath and the text is perfect. I was very happy to add this book with my collection of photography books.

Faith, Culture and Intentionality.
Craig Gay has penned one of the most penetrating analyses of the mutual reciprocity involved in the interplay between faith and culture. He is especially astute in delineating the subtle effects popular culture has on faith and practice. Even though he analyzes the faith-culture milieu through the lens of Christianity, many of the conclusions he makes are valid whenever faith clashes with the tidal wave of culture, such as we have in the West. This book is the total package, as the author makes suggestions concerning what correctives are needed in order to draw people of faith back from the shores of practical atheism. Of course, these suggestions are consistent with the Christian suppositions he employs throughout. Gay is very thorough in his examination of the instruments-sociology, psychology, theology, anthropology, epistemology, and others- which pop culture has co-opted so deftly in the process of trivializing faith's role in our lives. If you liked Richard Weaver's "Ideas Have Consequences" or Kenneth Myers' "All God's Children and Blue Suede Shoes", you will like this book. Tolle Lege.

Brilliant and incisive critique of post modern world
Wide ranging and delightfully erudite but enlivened with a deft and engaging style, Gay gives fresh insight and thoughtful nuggets on every page as to "why it's tempting to live as if God doesn't matter" For so very long after C. S. Lewis, Christian scholars couldn't seem to put pen to paper without sounding like Jeremiah. Gay--and a few others in recent years--show that there need not be anything scandalous about the "evangelical mind."

Bytheway puts dating phobias to rest
Trying to find the right companion, struggling with the dating game, or even thinks about marriage, John Bytheway knows how to fight the good fight. In his book What I Wish I'd Known When I Was Single, Bytheway teaches readers to see past the game and look for what is important in an eternal spouse.
This well-known motivational speaker for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and author of LDS youth books such as What I Wish I'd Known When I Was in High School and Dating 911 uses his extensive knowledge of gospel doctrine and personal experiences to put common marriage phobias to rest. Bytheway communicates with singles after spending the years following his LDS mission in search of an eternal companion. Bytheway currently works as an institute teacher at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.
Using the format of a piano concerto, Bytheway starts with the "Program Notes" and continues until the "Finale: Crescendo." The nine movements give advice on everything from who you should and should not date to dealing with a failing relationship.
Although this is not a work by a church authority and is, therefore, the author's own ideas, readers can easily relate to the straightforward tales of love and relationships.
The insightful words of ecclesiastical leaders, parents, and entertainers combine to form a guide for readers who are clueless about single life.
Through humor and common sense, readers will be thrilled to learn that hope exists for all of us who are sick of that four letter word: Date.

What I Wish I'd Known When I Was Single- How To Do LIfe As A
John has done it again. This is full of humor and good advice for anyone who has been there. His parable of the piano is one we can all relate to. John lends his credibility to the subject and does so in a manner that will have you nodding your head in agreement and rolling with laughter!

Who Count as Persons? Human Identity and the Ethics of Killing

Worth and Personhood
Kavanaugh is a fine writer and thinker who, regrettably, begins from the premise that it is always morally wrong to intentionally kill another. Without exception. He even anticipates an "attack on the infrastructure of New York" by terrorists and argues that it would be wrong to kill them in order to protect innocent citizens. There is more than a little of false moral symmetry here, such as, "After all, would we allow an Iraqi-controlled United Nations to inspect our munitions and bases?" Yet Who Count as Persons? is much more than a pacifist tract. It is a convincing argument for the intrinsic value of every human life and for the idea of the dignity of the person, severely marred by pacifist abstraction from the frequently sad duties of protecting lives. From a First THings REview

Necessary and nourishing
This compact volume is a substantial contribution to our understanding of our common humanity, shared with all persons, especially those on the margins "of society, of economy, of health," and, I might add, of attention. John Kavanaugh has forged a consistent ethic of life that calls all killing into question, out of respect, reverence rather, for our wounded humanity, whether we are unborn, despairing, calculating of "worth," or legally condemned to death. Particularly noteworthy is Kavanaugh's analysis of our soulless consumer mentality that has degraded our humanity to a mere commodity manipulated by market forces. The price is outrageous (Georgetown prefers to supplement basketball rather than philosophy, I guess!), but you will certainly want to share this good news with your fellow human persons.

Recommended reading for animal rights activists
Written by an experienced animal control handler of exotic wildlife Tim Harrison, Wild Times: Tales From Suburban Safaris is an amazing collection of true life anecdotes and candidly personal stories. From rescuing alligators, to rehabilitating birds of prey, to dealing with lions in city streets, and more, Wild Times is the fascinating true chronicle of a man with a unique love of wildlife, and is charged with the sometime difficult duty of protecting both humans and wild animals from one another. Wild Times is very entertaining and especially recommended reading for animal rights activists and wildlife enthusiasts.

The Next Jack Hanna
This guy and his stories are great! He's a firefighter, policeman, paramedic who, for the last twenty years, has been called to remove bears from apartments, lions from city streets, pythons from worksops, and cougers from backyards. He has met, and rescued, alligators from local rivers and farm ponds, pet stores and basements. His wildest captures are in this book. But his goal is to let people know of the growing chance that they'll be coming across an exotic, wild animal as their population increases in suburbs across the country, and to discourage people from buying and keeping this animals as pets!Excellent (lifesaving) snakebite protocol in the back of the book. Great stories for all ages.

Interviews with women from a variety of backgrounds
Binnie Shusman Kafrissen and Fran Shusman successfully collaborate in Winning Roles For Career-Minded Women: Understanding The Roles We Learned As Girls And How To Change Them For Success At Work to reveal the underlying psychological issues that lay the foundation for women's success or failure in the workplace. The authors draw upon interviews with women from a variety of backgrounds to identify six roles women commonly assume in the workplace (Peacekeeper, Maverick, Pleaser, Caregiver, Survivor, Entrepreneur). By becoming aware of the family/social dynamics that give rise to these workplace roles, women can re-evaluate and discard distorted beliefs, recognize their strengths, and improve their situation in their own workplace. The informative text of Winning Roles For Career-Minded Women is enhanced with worksheets and exercises aiding readers to create their own individual, personalized, hands-on paths to change, drawing upon their own particular strengths to create a successful and fulfilling career in today's competitive, often discriminatory job and career environments.

An Important Book for Any Woman In the Workforce!!
If you are a woman in the work force, if you hire women, or if you are a woman who is thinking of entering the work force then this is the book for you. I am a doctor, a mother, and a wife. I was able to read this book over the weekend which is important with my busy schedule. This book was easy to understand as a lay person. The book really got me thinking about how I may come across to my staff and to my patients, what parts of my personality work and what parts I may need to change. I have enjoyed the exercises because I have become so much more aware of my thoughts and what I tell myself during the day about different things. I have become more aware of what I perceive and believe and what may actually be true. I have become more aware of other people's roles and personalities which has helped me understand where they might be coming from. I believe I will refer to this book often. I also know I will refer this book to others.
