Teaching US History as Mystery
Published in Paperback by Heinemann (06 March, 2003)

History is Mysterious!
In "Teaching US History as Mystery," two distinguished education professors, David Gerwin and Jack Zevin, outline a unique way to teach US history. In their approach, students examine primary sources (much more vivid than textbooks) and, like detectives, follow a set of clues to draw conclusions and make observations.

In addition to being pedagogically sound, this approach is FUN and will capture the attention of students in grades 7-12. As amateur detectives (or professional historians!), the students are compelled to think of history as part of a dialectic, a puzzle that needs to be solved. What fun!

In some ways, "Teaching US History as Mystery," is part toolkit and part methodology. It contains classroom activities and decision-making exercises for easy implementation within the classroom, but also reveals a pedagogical methodology that merits exploration in other realms. As a teacher and corporate executive, I've integrated this approach in a number of creative ways.

Buy this book! It belongs on every teacher's bookshelf.

Theology As the Road to Holiness in Saint Bonaventure (Theological Inquiries)
Published in Paperback by Paulist Press (May, 1999)
Author: Charles Carpenter
Amazon base price: $23.95
Average review score:

"Important, clear, and of notable merit for spirituality."
I recently wrote this book as a doctoral dissertation at the Gregorian University in Rome. It was rewarded a "pluma gregoriana" on May 13, 1997. My thesis moderator, Charles A. Bernard, S.J., had this to say about it: "This book is important, clear, and of notable merit for spirituality." One of the defense judges, John Navone, S.J., wrote the following: "This is an original work that masterfully treats a topic of perennial interest for both spiritual and systematic theologians. It offers a healthy antidote to contemporary tendencies to eliminate the cognitive or doctrinal constituents from considerations of religious experience in general and from considerations of Christian experience in particular. Father Carpenter's work reminds us that the mindless approach to God is not the Christian approach. . . Fr. Carpenter's intelligent use of Bernard Lonergan's transcendental method contextualizes his study within the mainstream of contemporary theology."

A Masterpiece!
This book belongs in every seminary. A perfect guide to how one combines the intellectual pursuit of theology with deep spirituality. This thesis should be carefully studied and highlighted liberally as it is a book one can pick up again and again, leaving the session closer to God each time. A masterpiece for every Catholic student!

All You Need to Know for Surviving as a Screenwriter
Wonderful book on the business of screenwriting, contains everything you need to know and then some. Tips on what pros look for in scripts they want to buy and sell, info on the business, points to make in the deal. Ron Suppa is a screenwriter, producer and teacher, and what he's learned can be transformed into valuable lessons for you. It's a great book for professional writers as well as beginners, to understand more of the process of selling not only your scripts but yourself in Hollywood.

Best book on this subject in print
Do yourself a favor, READ THIS BOOK and forget all the junk telling you platitudes and wishful thinking and not hard, business reality, which is what we all need. I work in the business and I read scripts for almost 2 years and I've written 3 specs and I know stardust when it's being blown in my face. Not this book. This is the truth, like it or not, but it really tries to help you find a way into this closed club. Practical tips fill every page, conveyed in the clear, assured, tight prose of a working screenwriter-- with an easy, conversational style that probably came from all the teaching experience. About a third of the book covers the art of actually being a writer and surviving in Hollywood and crafting the kind of script that will attract industry attention, and the rest tells you how to protect your work (goes way beyond the register or copyright advice most books offer) in submission, all about agents and writing partners and the WGA and gives you a whole war chest of inside info that can really turn someone from a novice to a working writer. At least you'll know what the business is really all about. God, I'm sorry, but just flipping through the pages now, I have to tell you: I LOVE THIS BOOK!

Superb tribute to an unforgettable poet
"This Waiting for Love: Helene Johnson, Poet of the Harlem Renaissance" is an anthology of Johnson's work with a rich collection of supplementary materials. The book is edited with an introduction by Verner D. Mitchell.

This book includes the following: a foreword by scholar Cheryl Wall; 65 pages of Johnson's poems; a chronology; black-and-white photos of Johnson and her literary and personal circle; a selection of letters by Johnson and members of her circle (Zora Neale Hurston, Dorothy West, etc.); an afterword by Johnson's daughter Abigail McGrath, and a 2-page bibliography.

All the supplemental material is fascinating, and helps to put Johnson's life and work in historical and cultural context. But the centerpiece of this book is her marvelous body of poetry. Publication data is given for each poem; included are a number of previously unpublished pieces. Johnson was a true technical master of poetry, skilled at using rhyme, meter, and alliteration. She is as effective with a sonnet as with free verse.

Her work is passionate, witty, and bold. She is a keen observer and has some poems that really appeal to the senses. She is adept with vernacular language, as well as with more traditionally literary language. These poems cover an impressive range of subject matter: nature, religion, oppression, Black pride, urban life, war, growing old, etc.

I fell in love with Johnson's amazing voice years ago when I encountered her work in an anthology. I am glad to see a volume devoted to her legacy; I highly recommend this book for individual reading, classroom use, and book clubs.

A must read for anyone who loves poetry...
Verner Mitchell's book is long overdue. Helene Johnson was a brilliant, up and coming poet of the Harlem Renaissance when she left the poetry circuit to make a living. Langston Hughes, among others, praised her poetry. Mitchell's book gives us previously unpublished poetry as well as further insight into her life. I highly recommend this book to one and all.

You're back in 1912 reading the headlines!! Wonderful!!
This book is great reading, informative and historical. Since the author uses the actual headlines and articles from the newspapers of 1912 you can't help but feel you are traveling through time. The accounts of survivors are heart wrenching and the survivors of those lost, even more so. The inquiries are most interesting and politics never change, do they? I love this book!

Read the history as it occured more than eighty years ago.
Many books have been written on the Titanic. Most of them describe the event like an historical fact, with the advance knowledge of the events and its outcome. Nevertheless, few describe to the emotions and the opinion of the people who lived those moments and how they were observed by the public. Through journalistic notes of the British press, the author of this book, Dave Bryceson, presents a compilation of the news about the wreck and the events that followed it(the rescue, the trials, the support collects for the victims). This it is an excellent book that makes you feel the disaster in all detail, in the human perspective provided by the newspapers. Definitively a book that must be in the collection of every Titanic fan.

To Stand As Witness: Three Arthurian Tales

The Myths of Avalon
If you think the Arthurian legend has been done to death, think again!

Lee Martindale has re-imagined the well-worn myth of Camelot into three stories that make everything new again.

My one complaint? I want more! I want a full novel! More please!

To Stand As Witness...
Lee Martindale has managed to do something few authors can claim in this chapbook, she's managed to turn one of the most well-known legends on its ear. In each of her three stories, she makes you think about everything you've ever read or assumed about the legend of King Arthur. She gives new ideas for the forging on Excalibur; to the challenging of the whole identity - and even gender - of Merlin; and even brings into question the whole legendary chivalry of Lancelot. Her ideas, though untraditional and even unconventional, are clear, creative, and completely plausible.

Anyone interested in the Arthurian legends needs to have this in their collection

Worth the Price for the On-Line Support
This program does not include a CD-rom--not even audio tapes. It has no practice exams. But the on-line support that is included in the cover price was extremely useful for me. I didn't have time to take a course. But I never felt that I was studying alone because all of my questions were answered via e-mail. They even responed to my questions that were asked in Spanish. This is a great program--I suggest you supplement it with some practice exams and the free CD-rom available from ETS.

The Perfect TOEFL Prep Course for Me
This book really helped me get the score I needed to get a scholarship to study abroad. I started with a relatively low level, but I only needed 500 points on the TOEFL. The explanations not only for Spanish speakers, but actually in Spanish were very useful. And the program was focused on the Grammar section--exactly what I needed! I highly recommend this book to Spanish-speaking students.

Hilarious!
I fell in love with this book the first time I read it. Its a hilarious example of satire, and when I started reading it, I couldn't stop laughing. It had the same effect on my parents.

My mum: That was better than any dope I've ever smoked! *laughing*

Yeah. O_o

I didn't think they'd sell it in the US
When I first saw this book, I didn't think much of it. But my friend (being Canadian and thus disposed to this sort of thing) bought it and we read it, and I did not stop laughing. If you don't take your politics too seriously, I heartily reccomend this book for every possible reason that books are good. Even if you do take politics seriously, uh... Well dunno then, but this is a fine book and I want you all to read it. Because that's really the only way you can understand the genius between the covers.

Level Appraisal
The criticisms I can aim at this book are few: there's some needless reiteration of points made early on and some loss of context in the wash of events described. Both are stylistic and really just matters of taste.

Knowing only what an outsider can glean about MSF, this seems a wholly objective, balanced assessment of the group(s), its membership(s) and the circumstances, compromises, and pervasive questions attendant to both. The very real limitations and dangers of international aid are presented frankly, as is the selfless dedication of the MSF staff. Individuals are not squeezed into comfortable categories; the complexities, even the occasional flashes of swagger or ugliness, of each participant are served up with relative detachment.

As an introduction to the politics and human costs of genocide (admittedly from a singular, but coherent political perspective), it's hard to beat.

The photographs, which portray a parallel narrative, are likewise honest, and both stories are rendered with sufficient feeling expose what is truly uplifting about MSF.

The clearest explanation of "why" aid workers do it.
Of all the texts I have read concerning Africa and its political/economic problems, this is the best contribution to understanding the motivations of those involved in providing humanitarian assistance. It represents ultimately a message of hope which counters the many pessimistic texts covering this area. The hope is neither misplaced or naive, but is a product of a level of understanding on the part of the authors rarely grasped I think by similar authors. Highly recommended.
