The School as a Safe Haven
Published in Hardcover by Bergin & Garvey (30 May, 2002)
Authors: Rollin J. Watson and Robert S. Watson
Amazon base price: $77.95
Average review score:

Original and interesting book
This fine work of scholarship not only provides a history of the intrusions into the work of American schools, but it offers new insights as to why social problems and social changes have such an impact upon the school, which is treated as a microcosm of society. The book is very well written. It is an extraordinary book.

American Schools
This history of the American school raises profound philosophical questions about American culture and the direction it is taking. The authors keenly perceive the relationship between social movements of the latter half of the 20th century.

This is a fine, well-balanced, and thought-provoking work. I recommend it to anyone interested in western culture!

Brilliant analysis
The author is the leading light in naval writing. He lives up to every expectation in this book, which uses brilliant historical and technological analysis to explain the nature of naval strategy and the utility of navies.

'The key, and the theme of this book, is a very old idea,' Friedman writes. 'About four centuries ago, Francis Bacon wrote that "he that commandeth the sea is at great liberty and may take as much or as little of the war as he will."'

With his customary clarity Friedman describes the relationship between naval powers and land powers, the naval strategies of the world wars and the Cold War, the impact of technology, and current US naval strategy. Like many naval theorists, he relies heavily on discerning lessons from British experience. He applies those lessons to the United States' situation.

No naval enthusiasts will regret reading this book; it will at least clarify their thoughts. Students of geopolitical history are very likely to find it useful, too.

And the Naval Institute Press, as usual, has turned out a handsome volume: you can see your money in the excellent editing, printing and binding. I have no connection with the publisher.

Solid thinking from someone in the know
As one of the most intelligent writers on modern naval affairs, Friedman was the ideal person to write a book on this topic. The book looks at the crucial role of sea power in determining the outcome of conflicts from the Crimean War through the Cold War. His observations about the current state of U.S. forces are well thought out and very insightful. The reader might be surprised to find that Friedman actually agrees with much of the current structure employed by the U.S. Navy. This book serves as a very important addition to the body of literture on the strategy of Sea Power.

See Yourself as God Sees You
This is a very good book. It teaches how God transforms us to really walk in the lord. It teaches what God's love it all about.
It teaches how God loves us. It teaches how the Holy Spirit helps us to transform to really be loving and forgiving in our walk with the lord. I recommend this Book to every Christian.

strongly recommended!
Wow, God has really helped me through this book! Anyone who's had problems knowing God for who He really is because of an unfulfilling childhood should read this! The author relates personal experiences as well as real-life situations to the context that God wants us to see ourselves as we really are in Him: lovable, valuable, and competent. So often the world, and often our influences in childhood, tell us otherwise, but this book tackles the subject of proving those lies fase w/ the truth of God's word. A true blessing!

A century of wisdom, distilled
Janet Lewis was an extraordinary poet. She was still writing into her 99th year. Though best known for her excellent novels of historical fiction (i.e. The Wife of Martin Guerre), Lewis' poems are written with a strong, gentle touch, utterly unpretentious. Find the time in your busy life to take a walk with Janet Lewis.

Simplicity becomes complex
Ohio University Press/Swallow Press, located in Athens, Ohio, has put out a handsome collection of Lewis' poems, ranging from 1918 to 1994. Poetry was her first and last love, and this is obvious in Lewis' writings. Her diction is clean and spare; this is the real Poetry Mc-Coy - no extra words whatsoever. It isn't high-minded either; there aren't any of the tricks or thorny obscurities that often drive newcomers away from poetry. Lewis focuses on nature; animals and natural settings. Even the things she writes on that are not strictly "nature" are infused with the essence of it; her piece, "The Tennis Players," includes notes on the changing of the sunlight at dusk, and, after all, they're playing tennis on the lawn. All poetry, I think, should be read out loud, but especially poetry such as Lewis'. She is not dogmatic about rhyme, yet it's in there, as subtle half-rhymes, or those that skip a few lines before chiming in. These words work best when they're read, and left to float and settle in the air, like a pregnant pause about to give birth. Lewis' poems stretch for no more than, say, twenty lines, and usually they number less than that, being potent as they are. Barth's notes on each poem are a lovely addition to the book; they help explain an obscure reference, or whom or what in Lewis' life inspired a specific poem. Lewis wrote a number of elegies for relations and friends; these notes are helpful, to understand why these people were important. These notes round out the poems, making them fuller and more enjoyable.

Good Book
I want to kkow how as a servan leaders to implementing the christian leadership

Perhaps the only book and aspiring or current leader needs t
This very small book takes only and hour or two to read yet a lifetime to digest. Mr. Greenleaf's compelling insight into the essence of true leadership based on the servant perspective shows how true leaders lead from the front...and the back.

The reader will quickly grasp the servant leader model at work in the true great leaders of the 20th century such as Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela, and Gandhi. These people who made enormous differences in their own country and the world at large through leading by service.

The book is not in any way a religious treatise but a thought provoking, energizing investigation into what may be the only leadership paradigm that the upcoming generation will respond to.

Fantastic book on Shakespeare
This winter break I went on a Shakespeare buying spree, and this book is one of the fine gems I found. A large, but fascinating book, this work of great scholarship and excitement takes the reader on a whirlwind tour of Shakespeare, even into rather obscure corners of his works (Trollius and Cressida, Timon of Athens). This book is a must read for any would be deep thinker about Shakespeare.

The New Shakespeareans
Shakespeare as Political Thinker is a must for everyone interested in the political thought of William Shakespeare. This reprint will finally allow new comers to become familair with a commonsensical approach to Shakespeare's plays. The introductory chapter by John Alvis is worth the price. Perhaps the best Shakespearean critic alive, Alvis has an uncanny ability to show Shakespeare's moral seriousness without making the bard an unquestioning adherent to any political school or theological creed. Many of the essays that follow are also well done: Jaffa's chapter on Shakespeare's entire corpus, Laurence Berns' meditation on Lear etc.

The second printing of Shakespeare as Political Thinker gives hope to those interested in relearning ancient wisdom and pays tribute to its inspiration, Shakespeare's Politics (Allan Bloom).

Words from Diana Saenz, playwright
Since the publication of Shattering the Myth, the plays in this anthology have enjoyed greater awareness and subsequently been produced throughout the United States. It is read throughout American universities and is the book that directors and actors look towards when they are looking for subject matter on the Latino Experience. I give it five stars because it addresses the needs of theaters in search of material that will represent women, and in particular, Latina women. Of the authors included in this anthology, I have personally known Ms. Lopez and Ms. Moraga. Their depiction of the characters in their plays, Shaddow of a Man, and Simply Maria, is told with love, sincerity and the truth in translating their personal experience into art. My play, Dream of Canaries, has been produced in A&M Texas University, University of Amherst, MA, Portland University in Maine, as well as other theaters. The individuality and complexity of this play has been revealed in each production in the interpretaion of each director according to his or her vision. These visions, give testament to the life of the theater. Published works such as these need to be made available to all so that we may be allowed to portray all facets of American Culture.

It's an important book for Chicano/Latino theater students.
This is an anthology of plays by six Latina playwrights: Cherrie Moraga, Migdalia Cruz, Caridad Svich, Josefina Lopez, Edit Villarreal, and Diana Saenz. It is a must-have reference book, especially for anyone studying Chicano theater specifically. Moraga is a high-profile academic who is not only a prominent voice for Chicanas but for lesbians of color. Here you will find her script for "Shadow of a Man." Lopez is the most widely produced of Chicano and Chicana playwrights. Her first play "Simply Maria, or The American Dream," which is in this anthology, was produced when she was eighteen. And an earlier draft of Villarreal's semi-autobiographical memory play "My Visits with MGM (My Grandmother Marta)"--the third most produced Chicano play in the United States today--is included, too.

Loved it
This book should be considered required reading for any parents sending kids off to college. Funny and poignant, it articulately deals with the difficulty of reconciling the pain of loss with the pride of sending your child off into the world. The love that Ms. Jones has for her children shines through like a beacon, reassuring us that even though giving your kids up to the growing pains of burgeoning adulthood feels almost impossible, wiht patience and communication relationships can become even stronger. I highly recommend it for parents--or kids--who want to understand each other a little better.

This book helped me feel normal
After leaving my 18 year old daughter at a college 9 hours away from home this fall, I didn't anticipate how hard it would be. I was excited for her to have this experience in a great college town. I was unprepared for how I would feel like I had lost a body part, how I had to keep reminding myself that she didn't die, she's just away at college. This book verbalized many of my exact feelings about this experience. It was very helpful to me and made me feel better. The daughter in the book reminded me of my own vegetarian, jewelry wearing, intelligent, independent daughter. I recommend this book to other parents going through this life passage.

Get "Snug" with your little one!
This book is a delightful read when you are getting your little one "snug"-gled in for the night! Add a few stuffed animals in with your reading time and you'll enjoy the response from your children. My kids love to be tucked in with their bears, fish, and other beanies that happen to be this story! Unlike some of the other bedtime books - I still enjoy it after the 50th time. One word of warning: you may find yourself scouring the shelves of local stuffed animal stores for all of the critters that you find in the story line! Enjoy!

A very highly recommended bedtime book for ages 4 to 6
Author Amy Imbody and artist Mike Gordon successfully collaborate to combine clear word pictures and humorous illustrations in Snug As A Bug?, a 24-page picturebook story about a child who decides not to sleep in his own bed. His mother narrates some of the different ways animals sleep and why it's best for God's child to sleep "snug as a bug" in their own bed. An ideal and very highly recommended bedtime book for ages 4 to 6.
