Excellent (and Much Needed Just Now)
There has never been a time when interreligious understanding was more needed. And I don't have in mind only the atrocities committed at the Pentagon and the World Trade Center and what seems to be, as I write, an impending war. It's trite to say, but true, that the vast geographical distances that once separated the great religions from one another have vanished, both figuratively in the sense that modern transportation and communication technologies have rendered them insignificant and literally in the sense that, given modern immigration patterns, Hindus and Muslims and Buddhists and Confucianists and Sikhs are very likely to be living in the same neighborhoods with Jews and Christians. It is imperative that we learn to understand one another better.

This book is an important step in that direction. By presenting academically serious, reliable, but still sympathetic portraits of the five great religious founders, it provides a basis for genuine dialogue between the faiths. It is an excellent book. The authors are first-rate, and the writing is generally clear and occasionally even quite good.

I wish it weren't so expensive, but I hope that it will nonetheless have a large readership. I recommend it enthusiastically.

An excellent contemporary review
Contributions from the best contemporary thinkers provide explorations of the lives and beliefs of the five founders of major world religions: Moses, Buddha, Confucius, Jesus and Muhammad. These essays provide new insights into the careers of these individuals, blending biography with spiritual insights. An excellent contemporary review.

Wonderful, touching and amusing.
I loved the book. I love birds and have zebra finches that i allow to fly free in my home. They are entertaining and cute. The book was great. I really enjoy hummingbirds and miss them. I moved to Bend, OR eight years ago and hardly see any. I used to live in the SF Bay Area and hummers are plentiful there. Arnette's book was definately touching and I admire her love for the little birds. My favorite part of the story was her account of how little precious Rosie loved to bathe. I was truly amazed how Arnette was able to provide ample food for Rosie. Her experience with the hummingbirds is a rare life event and something that she'll never forget. Although I was saddened at Rosie's spring release, it was for her best and I can only hope there are more people out there with the resources and love to care for stray or wounded creatures.

From Squeak to Rosie....More joy.
She got me hooked on the story of Squeak. Then she slayed me with Rosie. More information, all well researched and documented, very interesting and then the killer....more wonderful photos that make you wish you were there. I can't wait to read her next book. Yes, I'm still feeding my hummers. I'm up to 15 feeders now. I'm also getting my family into it too. Thank You Mrs. Heidcamp!

A "Silents Majority" review of "The Royalscope Fe-As-Ko"

Randall Beth Platt, author of this brand spankin' new novel of silent era Hollywood, The Royalscope Fe-As-Ko, has captured the spirit of 1910s Hollywood and has displayed it like a glowbug in a mason jar for her to show off and for the reader to admire. While perusing this funny and entertainingly paced "Fe-As-Ko," one could easily begin casting all of these wily, early Hollywood characters for the movie version. Platt drops famous names of the era, like Mary Pickford, William S. Hart, Theda Bara, Mack Sennett, Thomas Ince, and D.W. Griffith, into her chuckwagon stew of fictional characters. I swear, if her fictional characters aren't composites of the real movie folks - they coulda been!

Cowpoke Royal C. Lectner has his hands full following his movie-struck wife and daughter all the way to Hollywood. While he has one eye on them, he has to keep his other eye on his two rambunctious sons, aged 8 and 10 - full of the devil and partners in pure mischief. Royal's wife, E.M., and their 16-year-old daughter, Elsie, have been bamboozled by one Marco Magellan into thinking that they will become the next Theda Bara and Mary Pickford (courtesy of Royal's bank account). As far as Royal is concerned, Magellan is a no-account, but what can he do? Royal, the confused cowboy, spends some time at Inceville and the lines blur between real life and the movies - real-life ranching becomes scenario material for the screen. With the help of Bill Hart himself, Royal will learn to love the movies he has no use for and have himself one helluva good time in the process. So will the reader.

This upbeat book will lead you right along the bridle path. Be prepared for tongue-in-cheek humor, wry cowboy philosophy and a heroic lump in your throat. That Platt woman has gone and done it. I'll be danged if she didn't pull off the whole danged shootin' match (shootin' a movie, Fe-As-Ko style, that is!). The Royalscope Fe-As-Ko is a highly recommended read for its funny foray into my favorite world - old Hollywood's silent gold rush.

A Great Comic Talent bursts from the Northwest.
Randall Platt's ROYAL ROYALSCOPE FE-AS-KO is a crazy, hilarious trip from the Northwest back to early-time Hollywood, and exactly the sort of tickle you'd expect from Ms. Platt, one of the funniest writers to romp through Hollywood's early history, and into her readers' hearts

Russian As We Speak It

Excellent - but you need a foundation in Russian
This is a really good book, given to me by a Russian instructor at DLI. You must have a fairly good foundation in Russian to make it worthwhile - don't get the book and expect it to teach you the cyrillic alphabet - you need to already have that and some pretty good vocabulary. The emphasis is on conversation (of course) but there are bits of grammar put in now and then. Overall, a really good book

Excellent entry to the language for those who know some
This book really works you into the idioms and ways of expressing things. Once you know some grammer and the alphabet, this shows you how to say commonly used expressions. Its probably the next best thing to having someone who speaks the language with which to practice (which of course is the best way to grow in a language).

Interesting and Practical Approach to Change
"Sacred Psychology of Change" helps you realize that no matter what kind of personal or world changes you may encounter in life, what's most important is your awareness of your soul and your higher self and your ability to observe and listen from your heart. The exercises at the end of each chapter are helpful and encourage you to look at your difficult past and present situations from a different perspective so you can take steps to change what can be changed and come to resolution with what can't be changed. The Questions and Answers in the back of the book are just as interesting and helpful as the the book itself.

A perfect book for our changing times!
If you are looking for a book to help you get through the chaos of the changing times, look no more. With everything going on in our nation, especially after September 11, this book is like a handbook or guide to help you get through these times. Dr. Barrick gives keys on how we can transform ourselves through the process of change. After reading this book, instead of dreading the future and change, you start to look at it in a way that is exciting and makes you more eager for the journey. The metaphors and case histories are fascinating. I highly recommend this book.

Sacred Trust: The Medieval Church As an Economic Firm

Ground-breaking and paradigm-shifting
Ekelund and his team of microeconomists have put together a convincing argument that the Catholic Church operated as an M-firm during the medieval period. Although the book comes in at just under two hundred pages, it contains several excellent examples of the Church making decisions and opperating in this capacity. Much recent economic scholarship has been aimed at using contemporary microeconomic models to analyze organizations that do not fit into the traditional boundaries of economics; Sacred Trust follows this trend, but takes it to a new level. Rather than look at modern institutions (e.g. the U.S. Army and the Soviet Union) Ekelund and his team have gone back over a millenium to examine an institution which most people (historians included) have virtually ceased to analyze. In doing this they have not only broken new academic ground, they have shifted one of the most rigid paradigms in academia. The authors state throughout Sacred Trust that their work is by no means comprehensive, but that they simply wanted to show what could be done with the latest economic models. Hopefully the work will be incouraging to other economists and historians, who can indeed take the work further. Sacred Trust is well worth your time and your money.

Note to historians: do not be discouraged -- it is possible to ignore the annoying MLA format.

An Excellent Exploration in Religion and Economics
A fantastic book that should not be missed by anyone interested in the study of religion or institutional economics. See also Anthony Gill's RENDERING UNTO CAESAR: THE CATHOLIC CHURCH AND THE STATE IN LATIN AMERICA, and Rod Stark's THE RISE OF CHRISTIANITY.

Saw this book in a gift shop in Savannah and wished I hadn't wasted my money on a camera. Her pictures are exactly as the real thing. What a great gift for anyone who has been there.

Saying Kaddish : How to Comfort the Dying, Bury the Dead, and Mourn as a Jew

"In the past, when a Jew died, no one asked, 'When should we schedule the funeral?' or 'How much would you like to spend on the casket?' or 'Where will she be buried?'"

The law and the synagogue had ready answers to all of these questions, as Anita Diamant notes in Saying Kaddish. Yet today, Jews must grapple with dozens of questions that make the process of grief difficult to understand in religious terms--questions such as, "How can I, as a Jew-by-choice, mourn for my Catholic father or my Baptist sister?" Diamant's book guides readers to make responsible decisions about how to honor the dead with integrity. Her practical advice is complemented by personal reflections and historical explanations, in a book that will help readers find their way, and make them feel less alone, in the excruciatingly lonely process of grief. --Michael Joseph Gross

Average review score:

Easy to read and helpful during a tough time.
Anita is an excellent writer and relates Jewish custom in an understanding way, always acknowledging that different types of Jews chose to celebrate/mourn differently. She is never condescending and does not Judge. This is extremely informative and I would highly recommend it to anyone. I personally have been comforted by the book as it has explained my role during the death of a loved one.

Comfort for Jews of all types
This is a wonderful book written from a generally liberal point of view. It explains the traditions surrounding Jewish death and mourning and gently encourages the reader to follow them, without being judgmental of those who choose other paths. As I await my mother's death, I am learning many things about my faith... and as the author points out, expanding one's knowledge of Judaism is a mitzvah for the mourner.
