Golden and Film
The Best Film Book for Teachers...EVER!!As a teacher, I get BOMBARDED with teaching guides, materials, books, etc. You name it, I've got one.
That said, this is simply the single best resource I have ever encountered for using film in the classroom.
Golden's point is simple and clear: It's not enough to just say "Movie Day!" and pop a tape into the VCR. We must teach our students to read film in the same way that we teach them to analyze and encounter any other kind of text.
Golden's book contains wonderful exercises, ideas, very specific clips from dozens of films, and teaching materials (age appropriate films, sample questions and assessments) for several grade levels.
As a professional collegue of the author, I have been fortunate indeed to have been using his materials for over 5 years now. My students consistently rave about the unit in their year-end reflections. They say things like, "I never knew there was so much going on in the film before." and "You've changed the way that I look at films forever!"
On behalf of all English/LA teachers: Thanks, John!!

Walsh is number OneHaving taken Richard Walsh, the text is a wonderful way to approach reading the Bible. It forces the student to think of the Bible in different ways. It forces those that believe in the Bible to see things differently and those that don't believe in the Bible too as well. Wonderful book from a wonderful, wonderful man
full of connections to movies, literature, historyRichard Walsh's introduction offers the student a literary critical approach to the Bible. The work's greatest asset is its connections to ancient, modern, and post-modern cultures with many references to movies, literature, historical figures, etc. Walsh's textbook speaks well to two audiences: the student who is satisfied with a reader-friendly introduction and the reader who is eager for a challenging in-depth approach. Walsh accomplishes this dual approach by isolating the more demanding (but also, more rewarding) material-->insets which appear throughout each chapter. They are a book in themselves!

This book is great!!I am currently studying to be a teacher and taking a course in teaching ESOL. Our class uses this book and believe or not, it's actually one of this textbooks you can't put down! The authors keep the audience interested by giving examples of real-life scenarios. I highly recommend this book to get a better view of how to make ESL students adapt to a new environment. Very beneficial!!
Supporting English Language LearnersPeregoy and Boyle have written an outstanding resource book for elementary and secondary school teachers who work with English Language Learners (ELLs). This book focuses on the literacy development for ELL students which is so critical to their success in education and in life. The book includes relevant research information pertaining to second language aquisition, literacy development, and cultural issues. Theory is transformed into practice with solid guidance for teachers working with ELLs in process writing, literature study, and content area studies. Background information, scaffolding techniques, in-depth teacheing strategies, and activity examples are seamlessly merged into a tremendously helpful resource guide which enables teachers to truly employ "best practices" in classrooms with ELLs. I first used this book while obtaining a Master's degree in education, and as a classroom teacher, have found it to be an invaluable resource. It is well worth the (relatively small) monetary and time investment for any teacher who cares about offering ELL students the bast instruction possible.

A Balanced, Thoughtful CollectionUnlike some of the popular works on Reagan, which are all too often uncritically fawning (Peggy Noonan, Dinesh D'Souza) or overly polemical and extremely critical (Haynes Johnson), Paul Boyer's collection of speeches, articles and essays presents a wonderfully balanced and fair look at Reagan. An excellent text.
An unbiased look at President Reagan...*Reagan As President* is one of the few works about Ronald Reagan that is written without bias. Though the book is a collection of close to 100 articles and essays that were written by various propents and opponents of the Reagan Presidency, its purpose is to compare different thoughts and ideas. In the beginning of each section, Paul Boyer gives a brief history on the covered topic and then allows the writers to present their views. At the time of the book's publication, Boyer was Merle Curti Professor of History at the University of Wisconsin and a senior member of the Institute for the Research in the Humanities at the school. His work is written in a scholarly manner and will undoubtedly be used as a reference for historians in the years to come. Though not written in a chronological manner, *Reagan As President* begins with Boyer's recount of the 1980 campaign and election, which is followed by the president-elect's acceptance speech at the Republican National Con! vention and Reagan's first innaugural address. The book then covers articles critiquing the Reagan Era, to include the president's persona, his second election victory, economic and tax policies, welfare and the poor, national defense, the Iran-Contra Scandal, Central America and Reagan's relationship and attitudes toward the Soviet Union. For the student of the Reagan Presidency, Paul Boyer's work will eliminate hours of research. Key issues are presented by reprints of various leading journalists and writers of many different newspapers and other media. For the interested reader, *Reagan as President* provides an exellent comprehensive one-stop reading.

book to a happier jewish lifeThis book is really illuminating and spiritually uplifting. It helps you find more spirituality in traditional Judaism. It will definitely open your heart as his other books also do. The book is written in a simple and clear language. Enjoy it.
a deceptively short book with a wealth of teachingThis book is easy to read and user-friendly. The ideas presented are easily incorporated into any life-style and type of prayer. The author's approach is non-threatening, open-minded, and modern and traditional at the same time. The suggestions are specific, concrete, and well-defined, although the subject matter is highly individual and hardly ever discussed. I recommend it to anyone looking to connect to a higher power through prayer and meditation.

Payne as an interpreter of the spirituality of C.S. LewisIn the REAL PRESENCE, Leanne Payne explains the spirituality of C.S.Lewis as revealed in his fiction and nonfiction writings. Payne is in part an interpreter of C.S. Lewis; in part a Christian apologist to the philosophical community; in part a spiritual director (telling us how to 'grow our own spiritual life'). She is also a minister in her own right - she has an international ministry of spiritual (emotional) healing. She has a somewhat arcane writing style which takes just a little bit to decipher. But her understanding of Lewis is great. His spirituality was foundational to the development of her own, and she articulates it very well. She explains it in light of classic, historic Christian doctrine, especially that of the early church. This book is very helpful in understanding her own subsequent books, all of which I highly reccommend, esp HEALING PRESENCE, RESTORING THE CHRISTIAN SOUL and LISTENING PRAYER. She has a tremendous understanding of (as she terms it) 'Incarnational Reality', the essential Christian assertion that, through the Holy Spirit, God comes to live right inside the believer. It is in listening to and collaborating with the Holy Spirit, who indwells us, that we are healed and caused to grow. Lewis wrote much about this concept (in large part symbolically, in his fiction); and it is from him that much of Payne's own understanding comes. It is to this concept that she refers in the title of this book - THE REAL PRESENCE. The book is a tremendous help in understanding the complexity of Lewis' writing, especially his fiction. Without understanding his underlying spirituality, it is hard to appreciate any but the most superficial aspects of meaning in the imagery and characterizations in his fiction; it also informs much of his nonfiction. Payne does an excellent job of explaining that spirituality and does so with frequent quotes from and references to Lewis' writings. (Perhaps you thought that the Narnia Chronicles and his outer space trilogy - PERELANDRA,OUT OF THE SILENT PLANET,THAT HIDEOUS STRENGTH - were simple children's books. They are, in fact, profound works, if one only knows what is meant through the imagery.) Payne taught at Trinity Seminary in Deerfield IL USA, and had access to a large body of Lewis' unpublished writings and correspondence. She has taught, there and elsewhere, on an undergraduate and graduate level, the writings of Lewis, Tolkein, Charles Williams and others. I give this book five stars (" ... and two thumbs up - way up!")
A superb study of CS Lewis's worldview. This book is a excellent study of the worldview of CS Lewis - one of the most influencial christian writers of the twentieth century. It is aimed at those who have either read or are contemplating reading Lewis's work. Unlike some books which deal with worldviews this is very readable, and far from being dry and abstract. The author demonstrates throughout her book a profound understanding of Lewis's writings and communicates this in a lucid and readable style - showing how Lewis's whole system of thought is centred in what she terms "Incarnational Reality" - the reality of God, present in and through His creation.
Later chapters in the book look at how Lewis understood the role of an artist, the nature of imaginative experience, and Good and evil (the author contrasts Lewis's views on this with those of the psychologist CG Jung and fellow writer Charles Williams).
Well worth reading for anyone even slighty interested in Lewis.

A Great Children's Church ResourceOur church's Christian Education Department used this book to teach our 2-5 year olds the 10 commandments. In 12 weeks, the children not only could recite the commandments in order, they could also tell you the commandment indiviually by number - out of order. The book made the memorization of the 10 commandments fun and easy for the children. I recommend book this to every teacher in children's church.
Great idea! This is an excellent and simple presentation of the 10 Commandments for children. Using the very creative illustrations - created to work the way a child's mind works - my 5-year-old son memorized the 10 Commandments in 15 minutes with no previous training. And even more powerful - he still remembers each and every one at will months later. The greatest benefit, however, is that he not only knows what they SAY, he knows what the MEAN.

Professor of Jesus and Culture, Emory UniversityI found both new to me and completely convincing:
1. The establishment of the gospel's genre as midrash
2. The establishment of the true ending of the gospel and the right translation for the witnesses' awe. (I'm also glad to have the snakehandler's text exercised).
3. The immersion of the evangelist in the tradition of Wisdom.
4. The role of the women as the wise.
5. The interrelation of the sower parables and also their interrelation to the mustard seed parable. (One example of many such effective expositions).

Professor of Biblical Studies, Cornell UniversityThe doyen of New Testament scholars of the past five decades, the late W.D. Davies of Duke University, said of Sabin's book that, "in a complicated field, the author writes in an admirably lucid, uncluttered style and draws upon the vast pertinent sources. The Gospel of Mark is one of the most scrutinized of all the Gospels. Dr. Sabin recognizes that it has been treated theologically, literarily, liturgically, and cathechetically; but she is innovative in suggesting a fresh approach to that Gospel.... After a very illuminating chapter in which she sets forth the meaning of the term Midrash, she examines Mark as a midrashic document. To show how such a midrashic approach leads to new insights, she juxtaposes her midrashic exegesis of Mark with one of the early Church Fathers and that of a contemporary exegete.... The result is a presentation of Mark which is often provocative and enriching: it may prove to be seminal."
I align myself with Davies' judgment and would add that her aim when countering longstanding standard approaches to the interpretation of Mark proves most successful. Time and again she produces novel insights and her criticism of major scholars in the field is both sophisticated and persuasive.

Great Stats guide for SLA and Applied LinguisticsThis guide will be invaluable to anyone who is planning to do any quantitative research. All the examples are taken from the fields of applied linguistics or second language acquisition. However, the thoroughness and clarity of the writing make this a great book for anyone who is thinking about research design and statistical analysis. The authors do a great job of anticipating difficulties and tying new information to what's already been presented. The book is suitable as a textbook/workbook (exercises are integrated into the text) or as a reference book.
The only drawback is the layout. It looks like it was just typed up in a word processing program and then printed out with no thought to page boundaries or layout. However, the outstanding quality of the contents more than makes up for this minor inconvenience.
a comprehensive guide to statistics in language researchIf you want to understand more about why second language researchers use certain statistical procedures rather than others, and how they go about it, then this book is a must for you. Divided into four parts, the main areas of focus are; i) planning a research project, ii) describing data, iii) comparing groups and iv) describing relationships. Part 1 deals with defining the research question, stating hypotheses and constructing research designs, as well as giving good advice on how to write the research proposal or report. Part 2 is a basic introduction to statistical concepts such as mean, standard deviation and z scores, and is written in a clear and logical style. Part 3 is a little heavy going at times, but the authors have a knack of being able to anticipate the reader's frustrations and go to good lengths to be made understood. T-tests and ANOVA in their various forms, and their non-parametric equivalents such as the signed rank test and Friedman are all covered in detail, with worked examples, as in the other parts of the book. Part 4 deals with correlation, such as chi-squared and Pearson, regression, and principal component analysis and factor analyis. In addition, the appendices contain lists of all the formulas and statistical tables you will ever need should you wish to compute by hand. This is a very thorough and useful book for anyone with an interest in linguistics, or for those who are contemplating doing their own second language research.
This book is very instructive and extremely interesting. It is definitely the best I've read. Teachers of all grade levels should read this book to, perhaps, interest their students in the literary arts. It's great for the move into the age of technology.
