The Phonology of English as an International Language (Oxford Applied Linguistics)
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (25 September, 2000)
Author: Jennifer Jenkins
Amazon base price: $25.95
Average review score:

Indispensable and insightful
This is an indispensable and insightful book that uses groundbreaking research to address how the changing roles of English in the world affect language teachers' decisions to teach pronunciation. The book argues that, for most users of English in the world, neither achieving a native speaker accent nor having an accent that is understandable to a native speaker is an appropriate goal. Because most users of English do not speak with native speakers, Jenkins argues that decisions about English pronunciation teaching should be based on what nonnative speakers need to be understood when they use English as a lingua franca with other nonnative speakers. The book has many strengths. First among them is its well-reasoned attempt to address the role of intelligibility from the view of the actual users. Second, and more important, is the fact that it uses cutting edge research to support its recommendations. Pronunciation teaching is notoriously short on research data and long on mythology, and Jenkins goes a long way toward changing this with data demonstrating the importance of pronunciation errors in miscommunication.

a revolution in pronunciation teaching
This is a book that may revolutionize English pronuncation teaching. Jenkins argues convincingly that in an age where English is THE global language it is no longer valid to teach students to conform to the British accent RP. Rather, the model for pronuncation training should be based on international intellibility. Analysing the conversations of non-native speakers Jenkins develops a Lingua Franca Core (LFC) that is, those phonological features which are necessary for international communication.

Jenkins starts out by explaining the concept EIL. After that she shortly sums up the arguments against RP. The middle part is a rather technical account of the various features of the LFC. At the end she outlines classroom activities and implications for teacher training courses.

This book can be strongly recommended to anyone involved in ELT.

Try It - You'll Like It
It's a good book. I never knew what caused water to boil either. Now I do. We also have the As Dreamed by Itsy book called Kinetic Theory about how gases work. I recommend reading it to kids first. Having the concept of molecules shooting about helps them grasp the ideas in this book more quickly.

Any Kid Can Understand This
I've read all eight books in the "As Dreamed by Itsy" series to my 5 and 7 year olds. They're wonderful, all eight of them, so when you look at the others, you'll find this same review for all eight.

My kids loved them and wanted to hear them over an over. I noticed that with each reading, they comprehended a little more about the story. Even the first reading they loved and picked up a lot of information from, but they were so interested in the story to pay much attention to the concepts. After all, they didn't view the story as a lesson in science. On later readings they showed a great deal of interest and even awe at that the world really operates in such ways.

And me - I'm not a scientist, am even afraid of science, but this was easy. I picked up more from these stories than I learned in high school. Of course the kids asked questions I couldn't answer (but not too many), but they ask such questions every time we go to the park or the supermarket. I just passed off their questions in the usual way. Now when I someone says something about the Big Bang Theory, molecules or such, I feel well enough informed that I no longer quickly change the subject.

I recommend the books and hope the publisher adds more titles soon.

Picture Me As Goldilocks (Fairy Tale Series: Picture Me Books)

The picture me books series is a great collection!
A very unique approach to narrating Golidlock's stories to your children. Not only do your children envision themselves as the main character (in this case, Goldilocks), but also the lesson or main idea is relayed direct to the point -- for young readers with simple minds. Instead of the original manner of relating Goldilock's story, it was revised to suit the young readers' comprehension level, thereby not missing the main points---to be respectful & polite towards others & their properties in order to be liked & to be treated the same.

Awsome
This book is a great idea. Place your favorite childs picture in the covers and you'll be a favorite. Your child is Goldilocks on every page. The theme is cute and enjoyable. Every child would love it. I wish I had one when I was a youngster.

Review by Patricia Y. Mumme, THE JOURNAL OF ASIAN STUDIES, Vol. 55, No. 4, Nov. 1966: "This book is a careful systematic and historically nuanced literary and theological examination of the largely untranslated and neglected stotras of two of Ramanuja's immediate disciples and contemporaries == Kuresa and his son Parasara Bhattar....Nayar's later chapters examine how crucial theological issues of concern to Srivaisnava scholarship are treated in these poems, such as the figures of Ramanuja and Sri, the temple icon, Pancaratra theology and sensual spirituality. On each topic she shows the extent to which the themes and doctrines of the Alvars, Ramanuja and later Srivaisnava tradition are found in the stotras of these two acaryas. Most admirable is how carefully Nayar has articulated her analyses with the work of prior scholars....this book promises to be a classic which no future work on Srivaisnavism can afford to ignore."

Accurate history of the Polynesian islands
A delightful read ! This book is quite an interesting read for my husband and I. We visit Hawaii every year and we always wondered about the native people of the Polynesian islands who danced and entertained us while vacationing.

We have a delightful understanding who the Polynesians are now through this easy to comprehend yet captivating book written by Peter Leiataua AhChing.

A great educational piece of Hawaiian and Polynesian literature which seeks to educate about the Polynesian islands and the native peoples.

Well the Kamehameha movie should be very interesting for all Polynesians, especially to Samoans and Hawaiians.

I also recommend: (1) The Legends and Myths of Hawaii. (2) Polynesian Interconnections, 2nd edition at Lulu Press, Inc.

A great educational gift for my husband, but I got one too.
An awesome educational book, wow this book clearly explains things about the Polynesian islands that were for a long time a blur, a mystery or confused by many people and Polynesians at large, like us in California. We live in San Francisco but we love Hawaii and its local people. We got this book from the Book Publisher: Lulu Press, Inc. and we are happy that it's now selling nationwide for all the world to read about the people of Hawaii, Tahiti, Samoa, Marquesas, Fiji, Tonga, Cook Islands and their connections.

It has drama and controversy that is later resolved, it is a controversy in Hawaii that we never knew about until reading this book. It was definitely an interesting read and a great book for native Polynesians to understand how their islands are related to each other. Great work Mr. Peter Leiataua AhChing, continue the good work. Hope Dwayne Johnson does make the King Kamehameha movie. We would definitely go see it in the theatres. Can't wait to read your next book.

Wuzz up from San Francisco,
Jacqueline

for comfort and courage in difficult times
A wonderful gift for anyone who has a loved one in the service of our country, this pocket-sized book is well made, with a slight sepia tint and subtle flags and military images in the background. It has a nice dedication page and its 30 chapters are arranged in themes, starting with "Assurance", and ending with "Wisdom".
Most chapters start with a poem or saying from selected sources, and a few of them are heartfelt, beautiful prayers by Doris Rikkers, a writer of Christian children's books, and the compiler of this lovely volume; the rest of the content consists of Bible quotes, in the NIV translation.

Small enough to fit in a purse, I find it handy to keep in my car for times of waiting or a peaceful coffee break, and it is also good for anyone who needs some inspiration in doing intercessory prayer for those with specific needs. Under the short but mighty chapter for "Protection", there is one of my favorite verses: "The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms" (Deut. 33:27).
Considering the limits of its size, I give this a high rating in the "stocking stuffer" category.

Hope and Strength for the Military Wife
This is such a wonderful book, and a perfect book for the military spouse and family!! I'm a military wife and this book has brought such strength and comfort during those worry filled deployments when you pray for your spouse's safety. This book is filled with scripture and insights on God's word on several topics that we experience....protection, anxiety, peace, courage, just to name a few. It's perfect for your purse or bedside stand, a nice compact size. I HIGHLY recommend this book!

Presidents As Candidates
Great insight from the most prolific writer in the most prolific Dunn (no e) family. Compelling, humorous, exuberent , stupendous, supercalafragilistic, expee, aladoucous....what else can I say. I feel as though I know the author. My only negative comment is that I wish there were more pictures...of Kathryn.

Amazing perspective and fills a "GAP" in Pres. Elections
I truly loved this book. it is a bargain at twice the price. Can't afford not to get this anthology on the public and private lives on presidents. Especially in an election year, you can not pass the opportunity to get behind the scenes and experience this first hand. After reading this, I felt like I almost grew up with the author. Excellente'!

Mind-blowing, but a tough slog for lay readers
This was a great book! It gave me a real appreciation for how foreign the medieval way of thought is from current -- because of the printing press. If you've read Walter Ong's _Orality and Literacy_, this is similarly mind-blowing.

I will caution, however, that this is a very academic book. She spends a fair amount of time refuting people who disagreed with her. It is also designed for historians. I'm no dummy, but some stuff went over my head. (If you know the following phrases and people, you'll be fine: Plutarch, incunabula, Tridentine, Rabelais, Marlowe, the _Digest_, Cujas.)

I gave it five stars because it was definitely worth slogging through, but I wish I had gotten the abridged version instead.

A superb introduction to the effect the printing press has h
We have come to forget that the introduction of the printing press by Gutenberg mattered, or we have come to assume that it directly led to the Protestant Reformation. Eisenstein wondered how true that was, and what other changes the press wrought in European society in the couple of hundred years after the press was introduced. Start with the concept of authorship--once books could be reproduced in quantity, authorship mattered. Then consider the question of alphabetization and indexing. Then think of what happens when travel writers describe native dress--people start believing the books and variations become more extreme to meet the printed word. That's just the beginning. Eisenstein's book is not just an incredible work, well written, about the effect on our culture of the printing press. It is also the sort of book that makes one realize how unimaginable and vast the influence of any invention can have on a society. This book is critical for media studies, history, printing, typography, just to better understand our own society, or for the pleasure of a good, thorough, read.
