an contributor voices an opinion
as a contributor, I am very pleased with this collection. My piece, Desert Song, is part of this very pleasing colletion. I'm very proud to appear here, with Erica Jong, Grace Paley and Letty Cottin Pogrebin.

excellent colllection of heart felt personal stories.
Probably the best and most complete description of what it means to grow up Jewish and female in America during the twentieth century. I especially liked the very personal and well written account of a death in the family written by Jennifer Futernick

Nineteenth-Century American Women Writers: An Anthology (Blackwell Anthologies)

"an impressive range of writings...invaluable"
"Generic diversity is one of the book's greatest strengths: in addition to familiar genres such as poetry and short fiction, Kilcup has also included travel writing, satire, personal narratives (autobiographies, diaries, and letters), domestic pieces (manners, advice, and cookbook writing), and children's literature. The "Selected Contents by Genre" lists others categories which help define the range of writing by American women in the nineteenth century--elegy and obituary; essay, oratory, and journalism; and the macabre, thriller, supernatural, and detective fiction. The diversity of authors is equally impressive. Kilcup has gathered work by women of different races, classes, levels of education, and political stances. . . . The headnotes are brief but illuminating, offer relevant author biography (if known), context, and significance of the work. Many of these prefatory notes refer to other pieces in the anthology, which encourages readers to make conn! ! ections among the selections and provides a sense of continuity among women writers of different generations, classes, and ethnicities. . . . The diversity of material, the insightful supporting apparatus, and the reasonable paperback price make this book invaluable to anyone interested in nineteenth-century American women writers. . . . [The anthology offers] an impressive range of writings which will introduce beginners to the diversity and complexity of early American women, and inspire more seasoned scholars to continue recovering and discussing this crucially important work."

A wonderful exploration that leaves one wanting to read more
The offerings in "Nineteenth-Century American Women Writers" are not only unique, but a great read as well. There are compelling and diverse materials here that you will not find anywhere else. The editor has clearly spent considerable time in researching and assembling the volume to make an original contribution--the anthology is indeed the first and only of its kind. This care to detail can also be seen in the accessible and well informed introduction which manages a tour-de-force discussion of the contents. The book's production unlike that of cut-rate presses is of top quality; the cover--like the contents--is a stunning work of an unheralded American women artist of the period. All in all this volume sets the standard for collections of nineteenth-century American women writers while appealing to an educated general audience. Would recommend to readers without hesitation.

Obstacles and Perspectives
One can never truly understand a piece of literature, much less an autobiography, without actually becoming that person. In this case, one may "understand" that Ms. Runyan had a painful and frustrating past, but since we are not that ones that experienced it, we do not truly understand. Being blind takes away from you just as much as it gives. You take on a completely unique perspective on life; you take nothing for granted, and take great pleasure in the small things that make life worth living. Ms. Runyan, you will win a gold medal in the Olympics.

Witty, insightful, humorous inspiration.
I'm not legally blind, but I could really understand it and identify with the struggles she endured in being different throughout most of her life. The writing style is so engaging and easy to read that it feels almost like conversation. Just when you have a question, the answer appears. Marla's dry wit is refreshing and intelligent. There is no pity party here!

Marla has really struggled in life and sport. She continues to learn and perservere as a person and athlete and that is what makes a champion in life and on the track. I can't wait to see her medal in Athens at the next summer olympics. I'm a better person and athlete after reading her story.

Appelstein Captures the Essence of Working with Kids
Whether you are a professional or parent, you will benefit from the insight and pracitcal techniques Charlie Appelstein provides in "No Such Thing as a Bad Kid." Appelstein combines research, experience, and humor in this marvelous work on how to help kids grow and manage their problems. It is hard to believe that a book that is so easy and fun to read could be so helpful. As a therapist and staff development trainer in a residential treatment setting, I use the concepts and techniques in this book EVERY day.

Excellent toolbook to parent troubled kids
As a parent of two ADHD children, I found this book to be a milestone as a common sense approach to dealing with troubled kids. Appelstein shares his wealth of experience in working with children from the inside of the parent out. I have already found his insight to be invaluable.

I loved this book so much as a kid!
What a great book for any kid interested in magic! I used to own this book and have been thinking about it a lot lately. I wasn't sure what it was called, but after searching, I found out its name and now have reserved it at the library. I can't wait to introduce it to my own daughter, who I know will love it as well!

A Childhood Favorite!
It's such a shame that most of Ruth Chew's books are not readily available. They're wonderful stories full of magic, witches, wizards and adventure, perfect for children not quite old enough for Harry Potter and magical even for those much older than the target age group. "No Such Thing as a Witch" is my favorite of Chew's books. Tad and Nora are convinced that their neighbor Maggie is a witch. As their friendship with the old woman grows, she gives them enchanted fudge. One piece makes people love animals, two pieces allow them to understand animal language, three pieces make them act like animals, and four pieces....watch out!

a superb resource
One of the problems of so many texts aimed at E.S.L. students is that they use only material from the country of publication. This book draws on so many diverse sources for its passages, including some from the countries of origin of many of those students. What could be better? Although many of the passages are just parts of the overall work (e.g., not all of a Shakespearean play), they are wonderful selections showing a great diversity of literature. Bravo to McRae and Vethamani for coming up with such a brilliant idea (in the British sense of brilliant) and producing this most interesting book.

Great Academic Book
A must read for students of ELT. Provides great hints and techniques for teaching of literature. A major difference from other books and definately a plus point is the extensive use of Asian literature in the book.

Nurses as Consultants: Concepts and Processes

Excellent for advancing the role of nurse consultant
The role of consultation within nursing had been primary linked with the multifaceted aspects of the "work" of the clinic nurse specialists. Other advanced practice nurses (APNs) such as nurse practitioners (NPs) traditionally have not been regarded as experts in this matter, even given the identification of a consultant competency by Fenton and Byrkczynski (l993). Indeed, the consultation process was most closely linked in this seminal work to "consultation to physicians and other professional staff on patient management" (p. 321) with a notation that NPs were not usually expected to play a major role in the consultative process. With the advancement of the professionalism of nursing and burgeoning opportunities for expansion of practice, consultation as a nursing process has the potential to take its rightful place among the other established domains of the APNs. Yet, no text existed that established a nursing framework for this process; nor was there a text written that provided the foundation of the specific body of nursing knowledge required to translate "consultation" from a theoretical abstract into working reality. Thus, in recognition of this rather amazing void in nursing education, Norwood drew on her extensive experience as a nurse clinician researcher, educator, and consultant to create a "nouvelle ouvre"-the first of its kind in nursing literature. The text is well planned out-beginning with the more theoretical aspects and culminating in chapters on consultation in action. Moreover, the entire text is sprinkled with illustrative exemplars and scenarios of theory in practice drawn for the most part from real life situations. In addition, one of the book's greatest merits is the encouragement of critical thinking and analysis of chapter content by providing thought-provoking questions at the beginning of each chapter and by the provision of concrete suggestions for application of content at each chapter's end. Furthermore, boxed summaries are used liberally and judiciously to highlight major concepts, themes, and constructs. A review of the contents of this wealth of information can only be briefly summarized. The first two chapters of the first section of the book focus on the nature of nursing consultation and introduce an overview of the process of nursing consultation. Chapter 3 and 4 carefully delineate the types of interaction patterns to be found in the problem solving process and expand on nurse consultant roles and prerequisite competencies. The next section addresses the importance of understanding organization structure and behaviors and structure, group dynamics and the dynamics of change-both mechanical and emotional. Section three and its 5 chapters detail each phase of the process from gaining entry and problem identification to action planning, evaluation and disengagements. Again, Norwood makes a conscientious effort to emphasize potential pitfalls and supplies blueprints to enhance success. Section 4 with three chapters of the business, legal, and ethical issues is invaluable because of its practical applications, supplying the nuts and bolts of beginning a new business with fee schedule formulas, sample contracts, etc. The information on the legal and ethical aspects is most rewarding providing insight into problems and dilemmas not normally considered when embarking on the consultative process. The final section on "consultation in action" profiles legal and ethical consulting, standing as current prototypes, and provides inspiration for future nursing consultants. The last chapter underscores the need for "future think," identifying trends, driving and restraining forces that can lead the enterprising APN to create nursing niches in the wide range of consulting activities now available for those wishing to push past traditional boundaries. Although Norwood necessarily draws upon prevailing theories from other disciplines from time to time, her synthesis of the consultation concepts into a unique nursing perspective makes the text come alive-underscoring the premise that consultation is truly one of the domains of advanced practice nursing. Thus, Norwood's text promises to fill more than the proverbial gap in the educative process of APNs. The text would also serve as a reference and basis for consultation activities in progress and would encourage and enable practicing APNs who are contemplating adding consultation services to their repertoire of skills. Truly, the text stands as a premier catalyst-becoming a change agent in itself-by releasing the capacities of APNs (Sheston, l990). Finally, in case one is not prone to judge a book by a single reviewer, Nurses as Consultants was also chosen as one of the most valuable books of 1997 by the American Journal of Nurses in three difference categories: "Advanced Practice Nursing Professional Role Development," "Nursing Education," and "Gerontological Nursing" (AJN, l998). No nursing bookshelf should be without Nurses as Consultants, but what is more important, the book is not likely to remain on the bookshelf, but will be well worn with use. A Must Have Handbook for the Nurse Consultant
Ms. Norwood covers every detail that one can imagine for beginners entering the field of consulting. Her vision of the consultive role, change agency, organizational climates, challenges, suggestions, supports, business forms and more are all contained in this volume. This book is a must have reference book for anyone that ventures outside of the traditional institutional settings for their professional nursing careers.

from an eskimo perspective
This is an easy read book which i enjoyed very much. I have recommended it to many people native and non native alike. It reminded me a lot of my "outdoor adventures" growing up in Western Alaska. The way the story is written gives insight into the life of Nederkook as it was back then, with no need for a lot of explination. Are there anymore stories narrated by Nederkook? i'd like to learn more about Nederkook's history.
Edna Wilder (whats her native name by the way) has done an excellent job.

Life in Alaska before the arrival of the Europeans
The is truly a fabulous book. When her mother Nedercook broke her hip at the remarkable age of 109, Edna Wilder took the opportunity to record stories and memories from her childhood. Years later, Wilder developed her notes into book format after attending a simple magazine article writing course at the University of Alaska.

The book documents what life was like when Nedercook was about ten years old and living the traditional Eskimo lifestyle that her people lived prior to direct contact with Europeans. Her people, who lived at Stoney Point near Nome, Alaska, led a difficult life, and survival depended on the availability of a number of species of animals, not to mention the weather, which at times would disrupt the general cycle of animal availability. Such a strong dependence on these two factors is a major element of Nedercook's recollections, but has harsh as life was, it was by no means miserable. There were many things for the young Nedercook to do, and when she was not assisting her mother with chores or accompanying her father when he went out to fish, she play or more importantly--as it was her duty to perpetuate the history and legends of her people--listening to her father or mother tell stories--stories which would have been long forgotten had it not been for this book.

Words cannot describe how much I enjoyed this book and how it has depended my understanding of First Nations culture. I urge everyone to read it.

A True Ledgend in Navy Diving
Bob was an exceptional person. I had heard numerous tales about him before I met him.I was fortunate to meet him in person during the Fifties during some advanced training at the Diving School in Wash DC, that he and I were class mates at the time. He was very reluctant to talk about his experiences as a POW. It seemed only after we had some Cocktails, He would open up. The most Interesting persons I have ever Known.A gerat friend

Make a movie of this story
I may be somewhat prejudiced, since my father. Pete Protz, was one of the two others who were Bob Sheats' survival companions, but I found this account fascinating. As a Vietnam veteran, I found this story beyond anything I had ever experienced. Not knowing if or when you would be liberated, especially when you are hungry and sick and see others dying all around you, is beyond my comprehension. Read this account and begin to understand what our fathers and grandfathers had to endure to give you the freedoms you now enjoy.
