A surprise
I must say I was a little puzzled by the title of this book. A "pet Hermit crab" sounds like an oxymoron--after all, a hermit is supposed to be anti-social, right? So why would you want one for a pet--especially one that has big, sharp claws? Well, I could be wrong, perhaps there's a little bit of the Hermit crab in all of us--the apparent loner who yearns to be the popular social butterfly and just needs a little bit of encouragement to come out of his or her shell, so to speak, to become the life of the party.

So I decided to take the plunge, and I bought myself a pet Hermit crab. So far things are going swimmingly for me and the little guy. We spend evenings together walking the beach, hanging out, and listening to our favorite rock n' roll and pop tunes. I discovered he loves the Beattles hit, Octopus's Garden, and of course, he's a big fan of Herman and the Hermits, along with most of the British Invasion. Hermit crabs do have their advantages, not the least of which is they have built-in protection against rising real-estate prices, something he points out to me quite often, since we live in a beach-front condo and I have yet to purchase my own home. Oh well, we're looking for a shell that'll fit me but it's hard to find anything big enough.

Anyway, he really is a pretty cool pet, I have to admit, and I can certainly recommend one for someone who wants a low-maintenance, inexpensive, and surprisingly with-it and companionable little pet.

EXCELLENT ADDITION FOR CRAB CARE BOOKS....
Donald L. Drenning (kritterlandusa@yahoo.com), a 'Crabber' of 3 years...aka 'CLD, February 11, 2000, Long OVERDUE Publication... Sue Fox has delivered a 'crown jewel' to the world of 'Crabbing'. This book is filled with excellent pictures and information for those interested in Gods little creatures, the Hermit Crab. The book is written so that people can read and understand crab care without having to go to a dictionary to look up every other word. It is concise and well organized. One of the best books on Hermit Crabs I have come across in some time. This book fills a void of several years, with the lack of good current information about the Land Hermit Crab. Her inclusion of the popular Compressus species (aka 'Ecuadorian') was most welcomed! I highly recommend this fine publication to anyone interested in Hermit Crabs.

AWESOME GUIDE
I bought this book and WOW, it totally helped me take care of my hermit crab Sidney. It tells you all that you need to know to let your hermit crab live safely and happily ever after!

Llamas and Alpacas as a Metaphor for Life

Heartwarming!
Marty McGee has somehow crossed over into the land of lamas. Her pictures accompanied by the heartwarming stories really touched my heart! When someone asks you why you raise alpacas or llamas, give them this book. It gives the reader so many reasons they may find themselves wondering just why don't they? If you love lamas or any animals you won't be disappointed with Marty's Llamas and Alpacas as a Metaphor for Life

A Special Gift For Yourself and Those You Love!
Marty McGee once again shares her love and respect for camelids while entertaining and educating the reader. Through exquisite photos of captivating llamas and alpacas and delightful text that will both touch your heart and elicit giggles, Marty takes the reader into the pasture with her, to share the magical world of these remarkable beings. This is an enchanting book for people of all ages. You will want it nearby so that you can just pick it up whenever you want something to smile about. Think about buying several at once, because I guarantee you will want to make it your favorite gift for special people -- and if you give yours away, you'll have to wait for another to be shipped!

A picture paints a thousand words
Why waste words when pictures say so many. Just turning the pages of this book gives you a warm and wonderful feeling about alpacas and llamas. A desire to touch one because they look so adorable.

I have three holiday cottages and in each I have a copy of this book on the coffee tables. Every week my guests tell me what a lovely book it is and how their children love to look at the photos. They then ask me if I will show them my own alpacas and llamas for real. As we walk around the fields they ask informed questions which they formulated from reading the copy of 'Llamas and Alpacas as a Metaphor for Life'. The feel of them then becomes a reality.

I think it is a lovely book and just the right size for anyones' home. I also think that it is good value, especially with its fascination and appeal for the animals and the excellent photography which must cost a bomb. Well done Marty.

The Proper Care of Guinea Pigs

Peter Gurney is a wonderful author
This is a great book to have in your library if you have guinea pigs - anything you would need to know to take good care of your pet is in this book, or on his website - I refer to both quite often, when it comes to my pigs!

It is over 250 pages of information, with color photos. All different kinds of pigs are pictured, and everything from choosing a pig to routine care, to preventive maintainance to curative procedures are included, and even a section on guinea pig behavior. P.G. has a lot of pigs himself and obviously cares a great deal for these animals. I respect him very much!

The best guinea pig book!
This is one of the best guinea pig books out there. There is a lot of information and many pictures to go with it. Being the owner of six guinea pigs, I do like to read a lot about them. I was trying to find a book that contained more than just words and cute pictures. (Although this book is packed with great pictures!) I had a skin condition on a newly acquired pig, and I really needed a picture or two to help me figure out what I was dealing with. This was the ONLY book out of the ten I own that showed pictures of two of the most common skin conditions - ringworm and mites. Although I do have a knowledgeable veterinarian, I do like to have something on hand that helps me to recognize common conditions so that I know when it's something I can treat or when it needs a trip to the vet. (This time it did - mites!) I wish I had bought this book early on in my guinea pig ownership. I recommend it to all guinea pig owners.

5 Stars for Guinea Pig Care
An excellent compendium on all you would ever want to know about raising guinea pigs. I have now raised over twenty guinea pigs to healthy adulthood and both myself and many a friend can vouch for their deliciousness. The guinea pig, if raised incorrectly, will not appeal to the palate. The meat of a wild guinea pig is tough and gamey, however, a properly raised guinea pig in captivity will produce the most tender, savory flesh. One needs to increase the guinea pigs calorie consumption and reduce the cage in order to create the ultimate "fall off the bone" guinea pig meat. My Ecaudorian friends swear that you should only feed your guinea pig chicken to increase its fat tissue, but I've had mixed results. I recommend buying a Mcdonalds' double cheeseburger and drizzling it with bacon fat to really give the little critter a diet busting entre. We both agree on a cage five to six inches long, three inches wide, and five inches in height. Food and water are stored outside. Preparation is another issue, and I highly recommend esteemed Guayaquilean chef Aurelio Guzman's Yummy por el Guinea! for a variety of fantastic recipes.

An exciting and thrilling book!
Wow! That is one of the best books I've ever read. If you enjoy mysteries, adventures, and espionage then this is the book for you. The setting being Spain in World War Two it gives you the inside story of the under cover world of the war. Keeping you on the edge of your seat the whole time the plots range anywhere from a love story to a crime scene. The Countess is an amazing women to have gone through all she has with such grace. I just can't wait ot get my hands on her second book, The Spy Went Dancing!

"The Spy Wore Red"
I read this book while on a boat. I could not sleep until I read the last page. The Countess wrote a vivid account of her activities which drew me into the pages and in every place she was during this period of her life. It was exciting and sometimes breath taking because of how she would place herself in danger to do the best job she could, and she WAS GOOD!! I also had the privlege of seeing her on a "Talk Show" in Seattle, Wa. USA. What a charming lady she is. Would like to read it again but my book sank with the boat. Long after I was off the boat. P.S. No one got hurt. Would like loaner. cptnRmateD@valleyint.com

Excellent! You will love it!
I loved this book. Most importantly, anyone reading it will understand that SOCIALIZING WAS THE JOB Aline Griffith had to do. I was upset to read the Editorial review from the Library Journal where the author of the editorial sneers at the fact that the former Ms. Griffith was socializing so much in Madrid during her assignment.

I lived in Madrid thirty five years after the time the Countess recounts. Her account and vivid description unveiled for me a city gone for ever, one however, clearly discernible when I was there. Thank you Countess de Romanones for this wonderful treat!

decir "Hi!"

The best in Southern Humor!
Reviewed by: Kristie Leigh Maguire,

I knew that "Rough as a Cob" was not going to be the normal book from the moment I opened that manila envelope, pulled the book out and saw the outhouse on the cover. Then as I was thumbing through the pages and saw the chapter entitled, 'Listen, Listen, The Cat is Pissin', my first impression that this was indeed a most unusual book was reinforced.

I had a real problem in reading "Rough as a Cob". Not because it was a bad book. It wasn't. No, my problem in reading it was because it is extremely difficult to read with tears rolling down your face from laughing so hard. My warning to the reader: Do NOT read this book in a library or any other place that requires silence. It will be impossible to read Rough as a Cob without cracking up with laughter. Ed Williams just keeps on rolling out those hilariously funny stories without any relief in sight. This is one of the funniest books that I have ever read.

Since I am a romance writer as well as a reviewer, I believe that I enjoyed reading Ed's romance chapter, 'Sally the Screamer', the most. As Ed said, 'A good love story just can't be beat''. You will just have to read this chapter to truly appreciate a good love story ' Ed Williams' style.

My next favorite chapter was 'Snake in the Cobs!'. This chapter will fill you in on all you ever wanted to know about bathroom equity ' or as Ed says, 'Bathroom equity can lead to some very serious consequences''. Now I know why Ed named this book "Rough as a Cob".

Lewis Grizzard was my all time favorite Southern humorist. Ed Williams has now been added to my very short list of Southern humorists that I admire and enjoy. Who knows? He just may become my favorite if he keeps cranking out books like his first novel, "Sex, Dead Dogs and Me" and "Rough as a Cob".

Finally! Another book by Ed Williams
I have anxiously awaited another book by Ed Williams ever since I read his first book "Sex, Dead Dogs and Me" 2 1/2 years ago. It was delivered to me a couple of days ago at work and I just couldn't wait to read it. I thought his first book was the funniest book I'd ever read - that is, until I read "Rough As A Cob". This book had me in tears, I laughed so hard! A bit of advice from one who knows - don't try to hide it in a file folder and read it at work - you'll get caught for sure!

Ed once again has succeeded in bringing his "tender tales" to life for his readers. What a gene pool he has! If you like to laugh, this is the book for you - and laugh you will, every time you read it!

Ed, I love you, you're fantastic, you get my vote for writer and entertainer of the decade!

From a true Southern fan...

I have never laughed so hard in my life!
A friend of mine who visited a book trade show brought back a copy of this and told me that I had to read it. Well, I did. My god, I laughed until my sides hurt, and I pure embarrassed myself at home one evening by knocking over an orange juice pitcher when I flung my arms out from laughing. This book is the funniest I have ever read.

I did some research, and found the author wrote a first book called Sex, Dead Dogs, and Me. I can't find a copy anywhere, and I have looked. Will there be more books from this author, please say yes, I am dying to read more! Please!

Elizabeth Lesser, cofounder of the Omega Institute, speaks to America's cross-pollination of religious, psychological, metaphysical, and ancient traditions that have flowered into contemporary spirituality. Like many seekers, Lesser has discovered a deeply personal religious path--one that wandered through Zen Buddhist monasteries, meandered through Christian churches, dabbled in African and Native American traditions, and expanded into the teachings of the Great Mother. Using her own journey as the road map, Lesser discusses why so many Americans are coming to a deeply personal form of religion--one that does not prescribe to a specific doctrine or definition of God.

Although she expertly performs the role of memoirist and observer, Lesser has stretched this book into a useful tool for all seekers. She offers numerous suggestions, such as how to listen to your body, increase your spiritual bank account, "live the questions" rather than "seek the answers," and create a supportive community. This is a moving workbook for anyone who's hoping to find, claim, or simply maintain their spiritual truths. --Gail Hudson

Average review score:

The right book at the right time
Cross cultural awareness, an appreciation of the common truths underpinning various religious traditions practiced in America today, and an integrative grasp of the relationship between human psychology and spirituality -- all are present in Lesser's inspirational work. She combines practical spiritual advise, with wisdom, gained while meeting the challenges of her own personal spiritual journey. Her insights, into the withering effects of a predominately patriarchal work environment on the souls of working women, are particularly enlightening and validating. "The New American Spirituality" is definitely a keeper -- a "must read" for the modern American spiritual seeker.

A Map of the New American Spiritual World
Eliabeth Lesser's book, The New American Spirituality, is a highly readable, thoroughly informative, and deeply felt dispatch from the frontier of America's ever-evolving spiritual journey. As a cofounder of Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, New York, Lesser has been in the thick of it for almost 30 years, organizing workshops and conferences nationwide, meeting and nurturing extended relationships with the leaders in the field--from Maya Angelou to Ram Dass--and helping put together the nation's largest and most successful learning center that seeks to explore and weave together many of the emerging threads of a country in the throes of perhaps the most extraordinary spiritual rebirth since the nineteenth-century Great Awakening. So much more than an academic treatment of the subject, this book is also part memoir and part guidebook. It is perhaps no accident that Omega Institute began in a small, white clapboard settlement that had belonged to the Shakers, who even in their heyday were considered a fringe movement. But much of what was once marginal about Omega is now moving into the mainstream. After defining spirituality and its context in American life, a good part of the book is then devoted to grounding the often ethereal world of spirituality in four different "landscapes"--the landscape of the mind, the landscape of the heart, the landscape of the body, and the landscape of the soul--which provide a kind of map to guide us through this exciting, rich, though often strange new world. Although she's a member of the cast and applauds a world she helped create, she does not suffer fools or pander to the excesses that this so-called "new age" movement throws up and expects us to admire. She makes us laugh, and laughs with us. This is a big book and, if you like, can be read in sections that happen to appeal to you at a particular time. But you'll want to read the whole thing and come back to it like you would a spiritual practice. The repeated visits are sure to nourish you.

Seeker's Guide is Tour de Force
Institutions of religion and learning take note: Elizabeth Lesser's "Seeker's Guide" is proof positive that personal experience is equal to tradition and scholarship as a pathway to truth. Elizabeth's life of seeking, organizing, promoting and teaching spirituality is disclosed beautifully in this multifaceted work. She shows by her own story, by her inspiring writing, and by her practical guidelines for meditation how ordinary mortals can create the sacred space for spiritual fulfillment in their own lives. Readers will find scripts for specific spiritual objectives, pearls of wisdom for the refrigerator, models for parenting, friendship, and marriage, holistic prescriptions for mental and physical health, deep prayers, profound wisdom, and the best bumper-sticker slogans in the universe. Her use of resources is erudite without pedantry or scholasticism. The book is at once a spiritual autobiography, a systematic theology of spiritual formation, and a useful handbook for spiritual practice. Personalities of some of our greatest spiritual leaders come to life as real people in the mix. If Elizabeth had only shared with us what she has learned from her years at Omega Institute, that would have been plenty, but she has also added her own powerful voice to the rising chorus of teachers and leaders of the New American Spirituality. Seekers who pick up her book will turn every page to the end and say, give us more, Elizabeth!

nothing new for people who figured out their calling
I was actually a bit disappointed in this book because I expected more advice on how to deal with the survival and achieve success rather than how to find a true calling. I do think I have found that true calling already thus this part was not interesting for me. I was fresh out of grad school when I got this book and despite having some work experience I did not think I had come even close to starting to figure out office politics etc. This book has not offered me many new insights and I still feel I am at the starting point re: survival and success. If anyone has good tips on books that might be more helpful, please let me know.

Amazing!
Anyone who's in (or just about to enter) Corporate America and hasn't read this book is at a serious disadvantage! Not only does it show you how to work more effectively with managers and seniors, but it even talks about promotions and career paths, early decision-making, work - life balance, and how to build a personal "brand."

Plus it really gets you to think about the deeper meaning of your career: where it's all leading, how money fits into the equation, and what you're going to want to look back on your life and see. The author obviously cares about his readers, and that makes it even more worthwhile. Truly an informative, provoking (and controversial) book!

Every entry level professional should read this!
Michael Ball's @the entry level is a compelling, substantive and witty guide for twenty something young professionals on surviving and succeeding in the gritty world of work. Written as an autobiography - narrative - how to guide, Ball's prose is frank and captivating. I have never read another book like this one for professionals just out of college or grad school. It's useful and relevant and should be a graduation present for anyone starting his or her first job!

A Problematic Dragon
I was first introduced to this book about 15 years ago--book + reading on record (anybody remember those? X=>) Anyway, a few years later, my mom came across it while looking for good children's books...she has been addicted ever since!

"There's No Such Thing As a Dragon" is the children's version of what happens when we ignore a problem's existence--you extrapolate the morals.

Wonderfully illustrated this is a classic to have in any collection! Buy one now!--my mom had to hunt and wait for years prior to this reprinting!

Really cute book
I loved this book when I was a kid, and just bought it for the baby we're about to have. It's about a dragon that lives with with a boy but keeps growing to get attention (no one believes he exists).

A hilarious fantasy
