Louisa May Alcott and "Little Women": Biography, Critique, Publications, Poems, Songs, and Contemporary Relevance
Published in Hardcover by McFarland & Company (January, 1990)
Author: Gloria T. Delamar
Amazon base price: $45.00
Average review score:

All age readers can learn about Alcott here
The unusual approach taken by Delamar here, is to give a biography of Louisa May Alcott, but then follow it up with an entire section devoted to Alcott's most famous book, "Little Women" as it was viewed from 1868 on, and then take both scholars' and average readers' assessments of it's place today. I liked that. It gave dimension. I think it shows scholarly research, but is written in language the average reader can read.

Great - more than a biography
This triple-look at author Louisa May Alcott presents information I'd not seen in many of the other biographies. The special "finds" are a real contribution to literature. The book overall is scholarly, yet quite accessible in readability.

A must for ferret fans and future Photoshoppers
The visual effects in this photo book are quite well done, and are a great way to introduce kids to the magic of what kind of visuals can be accomplished with computer programs. It might also teach them not to believe everything they see ;-) A helpful "how we did it" page gives a brief peek into how the effects were produced.

That bit of educational endorsement aside, the ferret in the book is absolutely adorable and ferret fans will find Mac Side Up to be well worth the price of admission.

This Delightful Book
Fans of ferrets, cats and photography will enjoy this cleverly written and photographed saga of two furry friends Mac (the cat) and Dusty (the ferret) who try to solve a very puzzling riddle. I highly recommend it for the wonderful visuals and delightful storytelling!

--And I know how hard ferrets are to photograph!--

Making Earth Ready for Life : Earth Started As a Hot Rock (As Dreamed by Itsy, No 2)

Evolution and more
The kids loved it - Me, I'm so impressed that the author managed to tell about evolution in a way that avoids anything that offends any religion. How? Telling you would spoil the book because it has a surprise ending.

Oh, there is more than evolution here. It goes through what happened on earth to give it a carbon dioxide atmosphere, then oxygen, and rain to break rocks down into soil.

The earth had carbon dioxide before fossil fuels - how about that.

Any Kid Can Understand This
I've read all eight books in the "As Dreamed by Itsy" series to my 5 and 7 year olds. They're wonderful, all eight of them, so when you look at the others, you'll find this same review for all eight.

My kids loved them and wanted to hear them over an over. I noticed that with each reading, they comprehended a little more about the story. Even the first reading they loved and picked up a lot of information from, but they were so interested in the story to pay much attention to the concepts. After all, they didn't view the story as a lesson in science. On later readings they showed a great deal of interest and even awe at that the world really operates in such ways.

And me - I'm not a scientist, am even afraid of science, but this was easy. I picked up more from these stories than I learned in high school. Of course the kids asked questions I couldn't answer (but not too many), but they ask such questions every time we go to the park or the supermarket. I just passed off their questions in the usual way. Now when I someone says something about the Big Bang Theory, molecules or such, I feel well enough informed that I no longer quickly change the subject.

I recommend the books and hope the publisher adds more titles soon.

Making it as a Couple: Prescription for a Quality Relationship

PQR: Prescription for a QUALITY RELATIONSHIP
I was in a shaky monogamous relationship and was LOST as to if it was I that was responsible for what was going on! I didnt know where to turn,or what to do~ as my friends were telling me EXACTLY what WANTED to hear! NOT what I NEEDED to hear!
This book is like a WORKBOOK in GUIDING YOU to better COMMUNICATION....dealing with dissaprovement....criticism..blaming and self-justifying....and even being right!....being more attentive....double standards and soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much more!
IT helped ME tremendously to understand how everything I SAY or DO makes a tremendous difference in either having a GREAT relationship or one that left me feeling lost, alone and FRUSTRATED!!
I HIGHLY RECOMMENED THIS EASY TO READ book!

An absolute gem that saved my relationship!
My feeling is that most "self help" books, in reality, are the authors helping themselves to the reader's money. With that as my overall opinion I decidedly was not excited when my girlfriend insisted I get a copy of "Making it as a Couple." I agreed to read it only to make her happy. However, after reading just the first dozen or so pages, I was really impressed. I stayed up and finished the book in one night.

It is spectacular!

Fay's insights, principals, and ideas are BRILLIANT! The book has no shrink-double talk and no Freudian bull**** or touchy-feelie filler. Instead each and every page has at least one very real, genuinely creative, unique, and practical ideas on what to do when there's problems in a relationship. I can't say Arlene (my girlfriend) and I now live in perfect relationship bliss. BUT this book did help uncover our major problems and (MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL) told us SPECIFICALLY how we could solve them! In fact, things are the best they have ever been with us. The shrink that wrote the book (Fay) helped us more (without ever meeting us) than a local psychiatrist/so-called relationship expert that I paid over $1,000.00 to for nine office visits. The book is an undiscovered gem. If I sound like I'm wild about this book--- that's true. I can't say enough good stuff about it.

With this book and a few hours I think any couple can solve their own problems ...or at least get a good idea if they are solvable. We spent two hours a week AS A COUPLE using the book's relationship tools. The techniques given might at first seem crazy. But upon reflection and use you'll see they work. In fact we have gone months without a fight (in the past ... every week had at least one big blowup). Now we seriously talking about getting married! I can't recommend this book highly enough. I know I sounds like one of those morons on Oprah-Jerry-Ricky ... but the truth is the book really changed my life! I can only say that about one other book (and that's my bankbook).

making it happen interaction in the second language classroo
Another question about the book: 1B- In spite of the many similarities between first and second language learning, the important differences must be considered in curriculum development. What implications might they have, particulary for planning the content of language programs?

making it happen interaction in the second language classroo
Hello I have some questions about this book, please help.. 1-The nature versus nurture controversy is still with us today in the area of language acquisition. Can you think of some evidence showing the importance of nature or what we are born with? How about our experience with the environment? which do you think is most important nature or nurture? and why?

Making More Waves : New Writing by Asian American Women

Hailing by lineage or immigration from Asian posts such as Japan, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Korea, Vietnam, and India, the contributors to Making More Waves are as well known as Lisa See (On Gold Mountain) and Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni (The Mistress of Spices ), and as new to print as 16-year-old poet Juno Parrenas. The story "Summer of My Korean Soldier" and the essay "Hambun-Hambun" neatly mirror one another, and illustrate an experience shared by all of these writers: the sense of being an outsider. In polished or jagged prose, the authors recount their lives and dig into feminist issues such as violence against women in war and peacetime, sexuality, and the nexus of race, class, and gender. They deftly explore how being Asian in America shapes such concerns and casts up others.

Excellent Read!!!
I bought a copy of "Making Waves" by the same authors. It was a powerful book, to say the least. I really admired the honesty by all of the Asian American ladies that contributed to the book.
This book, which is the follow-up, is also a powerful book, too. You see, even though I'm a Caucasian male, I'm a Christian and an ordained minister. Most of the ministry and worship I do is with Asian Americans(most of the are college age and young adult). Since I didn't grow up Asian, this book and its predecessor were a valuable resource to me.
After seeing this book, I'm more sympathetic to the struggles that Asian Americans go through, and especially the females. Too often Hollywood and the Far Eastern Movie companies have portrayed Asian Females as the sultry and sexy "Gesha Girl" stereotype. This book lets the ladies speak and takes the reader into their hearts and minds. It lets the reader know what they've actually been through, what they struggle with(and still do), and what they do to surivive. I'm glad they've shared what they did. I think it's long overdue that their voices were heard.
I would reccommend this book to anyone doing ministry to Asian American females as I do or to any male dating or married to an Asian American female. Praise God for Elaine Kim and the Asian Women United!

~*~ a thick chunk of asian heritage ~*~
i suppose you expect a formal review of some sort, but i'm just writing something freshly thought out:

i LOVE this book! it's pretty rare to discover asian american works of writing published in today's world. It iincludes stories, essays, poems, photography, and pictures of artwork done as well.

Anyone who is interested in heritage, asian american literature, or just would like a good collection of writing to read, i highly reccomend this book.

Accountants HAVE to be integral to Lean transformation!
Maskell takes a baseball bat to the Accounting Bee Hive with a call to ACTION for Accounting to become an integral part of the transformation of their business.

Concise, with clear steps to creating an improvement plan, the book is meant to start a dialogue among the Accounting community that will inevitably lead to a fundamental shift in how Accountants see their role in the organization. "Traditional Management Accounting is irrelevant at best," is enough to wake up even the stauchest dyed-in-the-Wool Cost Accountants and start them on a path to looking forward in the organization instead of focusing on past results.

knock your socks of accounting if there is such a thing
This is a modern and fresh look at accounting the way it should be. When the universities start teaching this to our future accountants we may once again lead the world at our own game.

The McCoys: Their Story
This book really suprised me. The auther, Truda Williams McCoy, brought out a slight different version then what I grew up hearing. I am from both families of the Fued. Now I have learned more of the McCoy side. Her photograph in the back of the book and I look very much the same. Most people that looked at this book thought it was me. My own brother and kids could not belive the how much we looked alike. I am not only suprised to learn I look like a McCoy, I enjoyed hearing this side of the story.

The "feuding" McCoy's Genealogy Bible
If you think that you may descend from the "feuding" McCoy's, this is the book for you. Someone copied a few pages for me with my Great-Grandfather and 4 generations up. I searched in vain for years trying to find a copy.

Since the reprint, they have become more available and I have bought extra copies to pass on to my children. The first 2/3 of the book is a well-written history, just at the book title describes. The last 1/3 is pure genealogy. Many lines go down 7 generations.

There are thousands of people listed starting with "Old William" McCoy. Dates range from 1750 to the 1960's. There are 43 photographs mixed in 2 sections of people, homes, and the hanging gallows.

A Medieval Pilgrim's Companion : Reassessing, El Libro De Los Huespedes, Escorial Ms.H.L.13 (North Carolina Studies in the Romance Languages and Literatures, No. 261)

Modern appreciation of medieval tales
Whether you are a dedicated medieval scholar or merely have a layman's interest in the area, there is much insight to be gleaned from this highly expository and very readable treatise.
Ever wonder what all that symbolism meant in thousand year old Christian art? Or how it related to those who created and heard the oral histories of the time? This fascinating book ties together explorations of language, medieval history, religious mythology and physical as well as spiritual pilgrimage, and their impact on modern understanding of this turbulent period.

Excellent Literature About Literature
Tom Spaccarelli was one of my professors at the University of the South (Sewanee TN). He was a major influence as a teacher -- fanning the flames of my passion for Medieval and Renaissance literature -- and has remained a major influence as a friend. I hear his voice on every page of this book. But for those who don't know him, I'll let him introduce the work himself (from Chapter I, INTRODUCTORY REMARKS). "The codex traditionally known as Ms. h.I.13 of El Escorial, which I have named the *Libro de los huespedes,* has generally been edited by medievalists as nine separate works ... "This now traditional fragmentation of the codex has resulted in our failure to perceive that the book was compiled and comprehended in its own time as a unified work. Modern editions of the separate chapters, produced in the tradition of scholarly concepts such as source texts, regularization of language, literary genres, the primacy of the relationship author/work, etc., have diminished our ability to comprehend the unique and unified nature of the LH, thereby distorting our knowledge and appreciation of the canon of medieval Spanish literature. I intend to show in this study that the LH is a text intimately related to the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela and to various religious, literary, and artistic traditions associated with it. To restore the integrity of this text, I believe, is also to provide a more historically accurate view of medieval Spanish culture and of the concerns and issues that fired the enthusiasm of medieval people."

Meeting God Behind Enemy Lines: My Christian Testimony As a U. S. Navy Seal
Published in Paperback by Extending Grace Publications (May, 2000)
Author: Steve Watkins
Amazon base price: $10.99
Used price: $180.00
Average review score:

THE REAL THING!!
Steve Watkins' book is fascinating. I couldn't put it down! Ninety percent of the book goes into great detail regarding the training he received (endured?)to become a certified U.S. Navy SEAL, including "Hell Week," as well as various SEALs missions and the part he and his team played in the Gulf War. Steve is the "real thing" folks! He is very up-front and honest about his salvation experience; however, this book is more about SEALs than Christianity. Actually, I was hoping for more of a balance between the two in the book. Hopefully, he will write another book bringing his readers up-to-date as regards his life after military service. For devotees of Suzanne Brockmann and Dee Henderson U.S. Navy SEALs books, Steve's book is a must-read. Any person who desires to enter the U.S. Navy SEALs program should first read Steve's book to get a complete understanding of the training involved to become a SEAL. I recommend this book highly if you are looking for a "good read."

A Captivating Read!!
Written in an easy to read style, this book will be difficult to put down once you pick it up. Watkins' story begins with his desire to enter the armed services' special forces as a child and continues through the unbelievable challenges and struggles it took to get to the top. The descriptions of the torturous journey through the long period of training and especially of the grueling "hell week" are vivid and thrilling. It is very rare to get a good glimpse into the world of the Navy SEALS and this book offers many insights that are accurate and truthful from an insider's perspective. Watkins was also privileged to have a leading and pivotal role in the start of the Gulf War and offers insights into the difficult and important mission that began the war. The book ends with a compelling, compassionate and truthful presentation of the saving message of the Bible, the truth of Jesus Christ which turned Watkins' life around and gave him meaning and purpose and especially the forgiveness of his sin. Though this book will be enjoyed by everyone who picks it up, it would really be a perfect gift for a young person interested in the military's special forces.
