A reader of WWII POW books
A British fighter pilot's adventures escaping the Nazis. His aircraft hit during a mission over France in December of 1940, Tommy Calnan jumps from his flaming spitfire. His face so severely burned that he cannot even see when he hits the ground, he is quickly picked up by the Nazis. After a brief stay in a hospital, plotting escape all the while, Calnan is transferred to the first of many prisoner of war camps. Committed to escape and return to England, Calnan gets involved with any escape attempt. Some of these ingenious plans fail, but the author does manage to escape and lead the Germans on a rambunctious chase all over the countryside. To tell any more would spoil this wonderful book. If you enjoyed the movie "The Great Escape," you'll love this book and marvel at the ways these "defeated" prisoners of war continue to fight Hitler after their capture

Friends and Lovers: Marriage as God Designed ItThis book is so easy to read and caputured and kept my attention the whole time. Whether you believe in God or not, this book has great advice and practicals to use. There were times when I laughed out loud because the situation described was pin point accurate and there were times when I was stopped dead because the situation described hit home and I was immediately convicted. I truly recommend this book to every married couple and even those who are engaged. This is one of my all time favorite books and I have given this book as a gift. Great writing and wisdom, you cannot lose on this one.

hip hop for the futureThis is an excellent, short study of the political possiblities and shortcomings of the current hip-hop culture. It sheds intellectual light on a culture that has moved into the current American consciousness.
Shomari takes the reader by the hand and guides them towards understanding that hip-hop is more than music. Using the Blast Master KRS ONE to frame his argument, this is a must read for newcomers to the culture, old heads, as well as parents who want to make sense of their children's fascination with hip hop music.
Shomari predicted five years ago that hip hop would totally overtake popular culture and his predictions are on the mark.
HASHIM'S KEEPING IT REALLLLLLLL!!!!!Hashim Shomari keeps his eyes opened so he can open the eyes of people of color. In this book he shows his concern for the Hip Hop culture and how the media is keeping the slave chains on their minds and souls. Hashim insists that the Hip Hop music has positive features of raising consciousness of the youth who listen to this music. A must read if your 'DOWN BY LAW'.

Crowning GloryFor those people who adore jewellery and Master Jewellers, this book is a must. With easy to read historical text, this book highlights the overwhelming reponsibility it is to be the Crown Jeweller to the british Royal Family, both serving the Queen and maintaining the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London. Garrard, arguably the most exclusive Jewellers in the world is not like other jewllers such as Cartier or Chaumet. as there is only one Garrad store in the world and they do not often allow those whose bloodlines do not run in the bluest of hues enter their premises, so this book allows the reader to experience the world that is Garrard, by showing detailed pictures of the Garrard show palace and some of the finest and most valuable jewels ever created. This book allows the reader to escape into a differant way of life and allows that reader a glimpse into that world strictly reserved for royalty and nobility alike. A fantastic read with exceptional picture quality. Check out the fabulous Cullinan Diamond known as the "Star of Africa" which at 530.00 carats is the largest and most valuable stone in the world.
Crowning GloryFor those who adore jewellery and Master Jewellers, this book is a must. Detailing the rise and sustaining importance of the British Crown Jewellers, Garrards of London, arguably the most exclusive jewellers in the world, this book offers the reader an insightful view into the overwhelming responsibility of serving the British Royal Family and maintaining the priceless Crown Jewels in the Tower of London. Gararrd's rarely open their doors to non-blue-bloods and this book allows the reader to see inside their magnificent show palace and to see some of the most remarkable jewellery ever created. With flowing easy to read, historical script and magnificent quality of pictures it is a book that evokes and encapsulates another world in which the reader will want to experience again and again.

Its' Just Fun to Read-Cover to Cover- A real page turner...Anyone who is about to become (or already is) "Older Than Dirt" should read this book. I enjoyed every page. Plus it gave me some usefull tips on how to deal with The IRS !!!!!
Now I am sure I want to be dead before I get old.Grandpa was reading this book when he died...At least he went with a smile on his face. Some of my friends who read it weren't even offended. This will probably win a Pulitzer Prize, provided the Pulitzer people enjoy high quality booger humor. I am buying this book for all of my friends who are old and still having birthdays.

Short and sweet -- an undiscovered gem.Tells you how to create the details that make a place special, using a simple but powerful theory of linked contrasts. Highly readable, can be put to use by anyone. Few books offer such design insight, none in so few pages. I rank "The Good House" alongside Alexander's classic "A Pattern Language".
Excellent reference for student architects! As an architectural student, I found this book to be excellent. Unlike other architecture books which may highlight an architect or certain buildings, this book highlights the idea of "contrast" to stimulate how one can critically think about a design whether the project happens to be residential, public or institutional. The book also shows a myriad of different types of buildings of different styles to highlight the "contrast" concept clearly. I belive, this is an excellent refence book for students and architects alike!

An excellent balanced overview of classical Greek ethos. As a retired computer industry executive, I have spent seventeen serious years both formally a la carte at Oxford and elsewhere as well as informally studying classical Greek culture, have amassed a library of over four thousand books on this subject, and I only regret that I didn't have Peter France's book as my course outline before I started. The respect that Sir Kenneth Dover and other eminent scholars (and in Dover's case, formerly Oxford) lent Mr. France certainly attests with more authority than I to its value. Its thoroughness, breadth and accuracy of representation of a very complex culture is truly admirable and would have saved me from many lower priority lower yield "roads less traveled".
excellent over view of ancient greek cultureI read this book to get a general feel for ancient greece after reading the Odyssey in the summer. The book was an excellent walk though of ancient greek culture and philosophy, though in places it can be difficult without an academic background of sorts. I particularly liked how straight forward the authors analogies were, and how the information was portrayed in section, in particular the snippits from actual greek plays give a taste of some of the greats that is certain to leave one wanting for more. An Excellent book.
In something of a contrast to other, better known WWII POW books (e.g. The Great Escape, The Colditz Story), Calnan's story is a very personal, almost romantic adventure story at points. Calnan's prose is not particularly literary but it is very effective. When Calnan surveys the German countryside on a crisp evening soon after escaping from a train, the reader truly experiences the feeling of being as free as a running fox.
In describing life in the prison camps, Calnan displays a keen understanding of human nature, the universal and those aspects which are uniquely British, German and Russian. Throughout his captivity, Calnan seems almost pathologically obsessed with escaping, but never seems to lose his dry, uniquely British wit for very long, even though his hatred for the German war machine is palpable.
In summary, this book is a must read for all fans of WWII POW books, and others who enjoy a good adventure story.
