Lots of detailed information
This little booklet (about 32 pages) gives you basic information on scientific names, anatomy, size, how long they live, habits, selecting land hermit crabs, designing enclosures, shells, water, food, molting, handling, breeding, diseases and other types of common land crabs.

I've had my hermit carbs for over a year, and after reading some information online, I realized that they require much more care than I have been giving them. It's amazing how much I didn't know about them before reading this book.

If you have hermit crabs, I suggest you research a bit online or through books like this one. If you were to buy any other type of pet, you would get information of the living conditions they need to survive; so learn more about your hermit crab. The more you know, the better.

A Must have Book
Best Book on Hermit Crab care on the market.Another great addition to the outstanding AVS line. Philippe De Vosjoli presents current information , covering all aspects of Hermit Crab care.

cute book
I bought this book for a nephew of mine. He enjoys computers and wants to work on web sites. He liked that it talked about what he can start learning and where to go for help.

Good webmaster starter book for kids
A career guide aimed at kids (read 7th grade and below), this book gives examples of career opportunities and the type of work environment in the webmaster profession. The book also focuses on what kids can do to learn webmaster skills at an early age, and how to get a website up and running for free. The case studies are also interesting, and give good, everyday examples of the World Wide Web and also discusses the difference between old "brick and mortar" businesses and "e-businesses."

The Careless Quilter : Decide-as-you-sew, Design-as-you-go Quiltmaking

"Careless" in this context does not mean sloppy workmanship; it is an invitation to create unique quilts without being enslaved to technical perfection. With this "design-as-you-go" method, anyone can achieve an attractive quilt, and what may have begun as a mistake can ultimately result in a masterpiece, with unlimited pattern and color opportunities. The philosophy behind this concept is to begin with a patchwork medallion that evolves as you arrange and rearrange fabrics, making design decisions piece by piece as you come to them, instead of plotting it all out beforehand. Though short on color photos (the color section is a mere 16 pages), there are plenty of helpful diagrams and black-and-white photos, teaching all about tools and techniques, fabrics and color, building the medallions, and quilting and finishing methods. With this book and an open mind, beginners and seasoned quilters alike can transform a few scraps of fabric into successful experiments in innovative quiltmaking. --Amy Handy

Great book, but needs a different title
I just received this book and really liked it. The basic idea is to start with a central medallion and then make design and fabric choices to let your quilt grow around the medallion. This means you don't plan the quilt entirely in advance, which I think is more fun, and results in a interesting quilt.

I taught myself how to quilt (I knew how to sew, but knew nothing about patchwork), and used a method very similar to the author's. I have now made many quilts using that method, and really enjoyed finding someone else who uses it. I also learned a lot from the examples in the book (for instance, she makes using triangles non-scary!), and will be able to design more varied quilts now.

However, I think the title "Careless Quilter" might put some people off. It's true that the author shows you how to correct mistakes without tearing your whole quilt apart, and even, in some cases, demonstrates how supposed "mistakes" can be used to your advantage. But the quilts produced by her method are not sloppy or poorly made, as might be implied by her title. "Careless", in this case, refers to not planning the entire quilt top in advance.

I recommend this book to people who want a change from the block-by-block quilting method, or who enjoy making their own design and fabric choices. And my thanks to Kristin Miller for writing it!

An approachable, whimsical introduction to quilting
I am a new quilter. I learned the basics from _Quilting for Dummies_ and, from there, picked up a number of quilting pattern/design concept books for inspiration. _The Careless Quilter_ was the book that finally got me sewing: Faced with far too many choices for a quilt design, I was at an impasse, reluctant to cut up and "waste" my fabric. Miller's concept of starting with a simple square and building outward from the center, all the while making a series of small decisions, freed me of my anxiety about "ruining" my project (which is coming along nicely). I recommend this book to anyone who is starting out, who needs inspiration, or who wants to look at the art of quilting with fresh eyes.

Casablanca: As Times Goes by: 50th Anniversary Commemorative

Everything you wanted to know about the movie
This commemorative book, published in 1992, certainly does its job of commemorating the movie Casablanca. It's a slender book with tons of photos of the actors, sets, and posters from the movie, and packed with everything you seemingly would want to know about it.

You find out about what led to Casablanca's production, its inspiration, how the actors were chosen, the history occurring at the time that helped it along, the quarrels on set, the difficulties with budget and timing, the process for coming up with the ending of the movie. You learn about the director's accent and odd way of speaking that sometimes confused everyone. (When he asked for a "poodle" and such a dog was brought, he angrily tried to clarify that what he wanted was a "puddle". ) You learn about Bogart's standoffishness to Ingrid Bergman, and Peter Lorre's continual playing of practical jokes on the cast. There's a bio about each actor, and how the movie affected his or her career, and a listing of movies that were intended copies or spinoffs. This is a great book if you love Casablanca, its actors, or want to know about moviemaking of that era.

Can there really be better?
"Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine." Unrequittted love? No one knows it better than Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart. Paris, Casablanca, does it matter where love meets up again? Reality intrudes, and makes these two face facts. This is the ultimate love story of the century. What this world truly means. Unrequited love, and our responsibility to everyone else. "Fall in love all over again." And I always thought that quote was so corny. Until I saw this. Watch this. You'll really fall in love with Ingrid and Humphrey, and cry at their nobility and their own love. And what they'll do for love. See it. Understand it. There is nothing better.

The CFO as Business Integrator

Authors: Cedric Read and Hans-Dieter Scheuermann
Amazon base price: $39.95
Average review score:

Highly Recommended
As the third volume in a series of "CFO" publications," The CFO as Business Integrator" benefits from the author's experience gaining in writing previous books. It is well balanced, and provides an excellent overview of all aspects of business process integration. The book is centrally focused on the new role of the CFO as decision maker and integrator.
"CFO as Business Integrator" was written by a team of SAP who provide SAP's vision for Finance and Controlling. Topics addressed include: Shared Services, Intangibles, Corporate Governance, Financial Supply Chain, Integration of Planning and Portal access.
The book offers a number of case studies, enabling readers to gain insight from real-world examples. Customer studies are offered by Manfred Gentz, CFO DaimlerChrysler, Jim Daley, CFO EDS or Wolfgang Reichenberger, CFO Nestlé.
Overall the Book is a good, easy read for CFO's and provides solid information that can be used to implement stronger, more efficient business process across the entire organization, changing the role of the CFO from that of a number cruncher and gatekeeper to a consultant and profit driver.

The best of the "Cedric Read Trilogy"
Following "CFO: Architect" and "eCFO", at last a work of real substance, and minimal PwC consulting-ese (only to be replaced with SAP-centrism, an understandable weakness, as SAP sponsored the book).

Each chapter is written by a businessperson with considerable depth in his particular area - from a business perspective - which distinguishes this volume from previous books in the series, which - to put it just slightly unkindly - were written by consultants who couldn't consult their way out of a paper bag.

Shortcomings aside, this volume is obligatory reading for every CFO and financial manager who who wants to navigate his company by looking forward versus by looking at the rear-view mirror.

A verry good book which tells a lot about a wolf as a pet
When I started to read the book, I knew little about wolves. This book showed that wolves are not those bad animals at all. I've learned a lot about the character of wolves by this book. The book is verry nice to read

Touching, shows wolves are more than some people think
This is one of my FAVORITE books! It was very touching. This book shows that wolves aren't blood thirsty monsters, but are just as caring as compassionate as humans can be. Through the example of Chakka, we can see how much wolves care for their "pack", their intelligence, loyalty, and beauty. After reading this book I hope to read Chakka: My Wolf Child also.

I could not put it down.
I picked it up on a Saturday morning, meaning to only read for an hour or so. I finished it at 11:30pm that same day! It was a riveting true life story that even days later I am still thinking about.

I've often wondered, when seeing an ocean tanker sitting at dock; where are the people and what kind of lives do they have? Now I know. I feel like I was on the journey with Jeanne. She pulled me into the story. It has been some time since I have had a book inspire such emotion that I have been brought to tears.

This story portrayed a great lesson to remind us that compassion can open the door to forgiveness. And that forgiveness not only frees the recipient, but also the giver. It also reminded me how healing it can be to use an adventure to shake up your life sufficiently so it gets back on its intended path.

I, for one, am eager to hear more from this author.

Worth the Voyage
Lutz's novel is based on her real-life experience as a merchant marine. She signs up during a tumultuous period of her life--
as a recent divorcee and disillusioned teacher, she's disappointed with her salary and lack of respect for her profession.

Although she's excited by the promise of more money and an adventure, she has no idea what lies in store for her as she ships out on an aging freighter.

Battling exhaustion and terrible working conditions, she's forced to face issues from her past.

One of the most moving parts of the book is when she tapes a letter to her daughters into her tiny dorm-room style refrigerator, hoping that somehow the message will remain safe when the ship capsizes.

Lutz is a fresh, honest Northwest voice--she captures what it's like to be a single woman who bucks the system.

Bravo! Hope to see more from this writer soon!

review on lois
i think this book was very good. Lois Duncan has real talent and determination.

Wonderful to know how it all started
I found this book at my dad's school library and read it in one day. Fantastic! I'd read almost all of Lois Duncan's work, and had always wondered how she got started. This book tells about her life as a kid, a teen sending in stories to various magazines, with samples of her work, and a mother and wife trapped in a terrible relationship. I wish this book would be reprinted -- it's a treat for all Lois Duncan fans.

Any Kid Can Understand This
I've read all eight books in the "As Dreamed by Itsy" series to my 5 and 7 year olds. They're wonderful, all eight of them, so when you look at the others, you'll find this same review for all eight.

My kids loved them and wanted to hear them over an over. I noticed that with each reading, they comprehended a little more about the story. Even the first reading they loved and picked up a lot of information from, but they were so interested in the story to pay much attention to the concepts. After all, they didn't view the story as a lesson in science. On later readings they showed a great deal of interest and even awe at that the world really operates in such ways.

And me - I'm not a scientist, am even afraid of science, but this was easy. I picked up more from these stories than I learned in high school. Of course the kids asked questions I couldn't answer (but not too many), but they ask such questions every time we go to the park or the supermarket. I just passed off their questions in the usual way. Now when I someone says something about the Big Bang Theory, molecules or such, I feel well enough informed that I no longer quickly change the subject.

I recommend the books and hope the publisher adds more titles soon.

Good Pictures, Great Story
This is the second "As Dreamed by Itsy" book for us. One of the neat things was the pictures Showing Itsy and the pirate doing things like sticking molecules together.

The story really came through well to my six year old daughter. She now knows that only a limited number of atoms can make so many different things. She likes cooking and using the example of a few ingredients letting a cook make so many different dishes really came through to her.

I'm sure she doesn't fully understand all she has learned about chemicals yet, but she has the foundation. I expect she'll use this foundation to build her knowledge as time goes by.

The Classical Music of North India: The Music of the Baba Allauddin Gharana As Taught Byali Akbar Khan/Volume One: The First Years' Study

Authors: George Ruckert and Ali Akbar Khan
Amazon base price: $59.95

Exceptional book
This probably rates as the finest effort by Western Music students of Khan Saheb to document in ENGLISH the many compositions for volcal and instrumental music. Khan Saheb represents the spiritual and the sublime in Indian Classical Music. He is not only the greatest living Indian Musician and Teacher, but also a caring human being who loves his students as much as his own children. Let's hope that the next book from Khan Saheb or his students is forthcoming shortly. k. deepak Kapoor

Distillation of teaching of greatest living Indian musician.
The bulk of this book consists of notated compositions as taught by Khansahib in class at the Ali Akbar Khan College in California. The music is in the prinicipal ragas of the 10 thaats. Although this is a small fraction of the wealth of music available in this tradition, it is plenty to get started. The rest of the book is a concise but still thorough presentation of form, style, history, and theory of North Indian music. A fantastic piece of work!
