Must Read - History at its Finest!
Dr. Noah W. Hutchings is a prolific author of easy-to-read volumes written about history and prophecy who saw no reason to write an autobiography. He thought no one would want to read about him. Happily, I, along with several of his friends persuaded him to put part of his globe-trotting, hair-raising adventure-filled life to paper. The result is one of his best selling books ever. I was privileged to read the manuscript before the book went to press. I read through it twice before I could put it down. His humor is evident and the real life stories are amazing, enlightening, educational, and inspirational. This is a must read for any student of history or for anyone who enjoys a good story. Dr. Noah Webster Hutchings is now 80 and it is about time for a sequel! Great book!

Very enjoyable page turner.
If you have any knowledge of Noah Hutchings this book was only increase your respect for him. It was a very honest and heartwarming story of his life. But it does not end there, if you would like to fill in all of those missing pieces in American history of the last 75 years, this book is a perfect tool to use to get you well on your way to understanding not only when events took place but also how they all interconnect with each other. A very honest look at peoples views and opinion of each other during those times in history. As an added bonus Noah keeps you laughing thoughout this great book!

As it seemed to me : political memoirs

From Attlee to Blair
John Cole is the former Political Editor of the BBC, before that he was a journalist, most notably with "The Guardian" newspaper. These memoirs span the time between Cole's brief meeting with Clement Attlee in 1948 and his retirement in 1995.

Cole was a labour correspondent for a large part of his journalistic career. It's not surprising that until the Thatcher government came to power in 1979, his knowledge of the Labour Party and trade unionism is far more detailed than his knowledge of the Conservative Party. Thereafter, of course, the Conservatives take centre stage in the book.

That's not to say that this makes the book any less interesting - far from it. Cole writes in a lively yet reflective style. His political preferences seemed to be for pragmatic politicians of the Harold Wilson variety rather than more ideological types such as Margaret Thatcher, whom he saw as too dogmatic and inflexible. He seems to regret what he saw as the damage done to his country by Thatcher's unbending adherence to her principles, the result of which was private wealth and public squalor. In particular, he is deeply uncomfortable with the acceptance of unemployment as a necessary price to pay in the bigger struggle to tame inflation.

My edition of the book dated from 1996. Thus it was written before the fall of the Major government in 1997. Yet Cole found space to make some perhaps prescient criticism of the way the Labour Party was then developing under Tony Blair's leadership.

Very enjoyable.

A window onto history in the making
I took this book on holiday as a last measure...you know, the book that you will try to read after you've read everything else. My initial judgement did it serious disservice. Cole manages to combine a panoramic view of British party politics with his own acerbic, unbiased and lucid commentary on the situation 'as it seemed to me'. It's as easy and pleasurable to read as any novel. I could remember the headline events of the late 60's and 70's. I was a teenager during the three day week of the Heath government, and remember the power cuts and blackouts. Cole's book gave me a political context to understand why all of this was happening. This represents only a small part of the book. Read it for yourself, and make sense of what was going on at the time;.

SO WONDERFUL AND MOVING!
Mr. Belyea writes with intellect, honesty, compassion, and humor. This is a most compelling look into a world many of us, so fortunately, know nothing about. I feel honored to be privy to one man's vulnerable journey to make a diference. I read the book start to finish. I couldn't put it down!

Funny, moving story of volunteerism, the hard way
Anyone who's ever worked with kids will be able to see a little of themselves in this book. It made me want to give some of my time to those who REALLY need it.

An Inspirational Story of Love
Talk about a book that you will not be able to put down. You will laugh, you will cry, and you will wonder at the strength and dignity of Annie Weissman. Weissman lost both her daughters in the crash of Northwest Flight #255. Her memoir details the before, during, and aftermath of the crash and how she dealt with this unimaginable loss. What struck me was the feeling of transformation: how Weissman learned to deal with this tragedy and how uplifting the ending is to the reader. I sent this to my sister as a gift and she read it in one sitting. She called and told me that through the memoir she had a new and more appreciative understanding of parenthood, love, and friendship. It is a must read for anyone who has lost a loved one, anyone who needs a reminder of the importance of love, or anyone who has loved ones in their lives.

a book that touches the heart
This book, by Annie Weissman, is a MUST READ. It is the author's personal story of loss and gain written in a gripping style. Once you pick it up you will not want to put it down until you have finished.

The book evokes tears and laughter. You will love reading "As One Door Closes..." if you have children in your life, if you have close friends, if you have ever had to endure the death of a loved one, if you need inspiration to get to the other side of pain.

Annie Weissman, an accomplished author of non-fiction books, writes in a style that reaches into your heart and soul. Her details of family moments and personal struggles make her story relevant to all readers.

This is a superb book for yourself and as a gift to friends.

A winner of a book!
Tim Stafford explores the seven stages of aging, giving practical solutions and inspirational insights to the day-to-day problems encountered by those over 65 and their caretakers. This time of life is an important period shen families share concerns and form the basis for healing through experiencing, receiving and giving love. Mr Stafford presents aging, not as a problem to be solved, but as a gift from God, a time of life and growth and joy for those who have the eyes to see.

Gentle, thoughtful, yet very informative book
I read this book by way of mental preparation as both sets of our parents age. Written from a Christian viewpoint, the book sensitively describes both older and younger generation's viewpoint of the aging process. Both would benefit from reading!

Short stories that will long be on your mind
Tim Lebbon brings a refreshing new dimension to the horror short story genre. Having read over 700 horror tomes I'm very hard to impress but I was bowled over by this collection. Each story will pluck a string in your heart and mind and start a vibration that will either chill, amaze or simply give you cause to wonder. Tim's writing style can't be compared to other horror authors due to the uniqueness of his phrasing, subject matter and superb characterizations. I'm truly immersed in reading while absorbing the terrible wonderfulness of this treasure trove of tales. If you're a true fan of the horoor genre don't cheat yourself out of reading an author who was born to write horror. I've LOVED all his books.

As The Sun Goes Down - Assailing Assumptions
Having read most of Tim Lebbon's work to date, I have had the pleasure of witnessing his writing develop both in confidence and maturity. With this collection Lebbon clearly demonstrates how he has completely conquered the short story as a medium.

As The Sun Goes Down presents a tableau of stories each very distinct in content and form, yet inextricably linked in disturbing the reader and challenging their accepted values. Not one tale is wasted in Lebbon's determination to subvert our perceptions of love, life, nature, beauty and the innocence of childhood. His use of language and narrative form is unrelenting, each vying to create images from words that incessantly chip away at our confidence in the so-called 'truths' of existence.

Lebbon is a horror writer we are told, but to consider the genre before the work would be to deny that which is most effective in these tales. The genre is used to explore wholly universal themes, a methodology that makes his stories impossible to pigeon-hole and an important reading experience for a much wider audience.

You will miss out if you think this collection is only for the horror reader. If you want to understand the narrative strength of the short story whatever its content, it is clearly exhibited here. Trust me, I rarely read horror myself.

Absolutely great
This wonderful collection of Peanuts cartoons was originally published in 1964. As with other Peanuts books, this one has two strips of four frames each, all of then from 1963-64. Because of the date, Rerun isn't here, but just about all of the other Peanuts stars are - Lucy, Violet, Schroeder, and even Sally.

As with all of the Peanuts books, this one is absolutely great, and if you can get it, then do so! Among the many adventures that you will see in here are the group meeting a new boy named 555 95472 (5 for short - his Dad decided to surrender to the trend of reducing everyone to numbers), Charlie Brown getting "Little Leaguer's Elbow," and Snoopy surviving a flood (fortunately, his Van Gogh wasn't harmed).

Charlie Brown sure likes that little red haired girl...
"As You Like It, Charlie Brown" finds the Peanuts gang experiencing tragedy on a Shakespearean level in this collection of daily strips drawn by Charles M. Schulz in 1963 and 1964. You see, all Charlie Brown needs to do is hold the other team for one more inning and the team will win the championship. Meanwhile, Lucy has a desire to be called "cutie," Snoopy has to go to the hospital, Linus has to perform in the Christmas pageant, and Sally decides not to go to school (she went last year). However, the focus really is on Charlie Brown this time around, what with having a crush on the little red haired girl, having to feed Snoopy at suppertime, having "little leaguer's elbow," and receiving a bill from Lucy for $143 for psychiatric services including a slide show of all of his faults. And when the little red head girl comes to watch the baseball game it is the worst of both worlds. The sign of the times is the arrival of 5 95472 in the neighborhood; this is one of the few "new" Peanuts characters not to pan out, and represents that moment in history when the zip code was introduced into American culture. My argument is that the heyday of "Peanuts" started in the late 1950s and pretty much lasted the entire decade of the 1960s. However, I am pretty sure that "As You Like It, Charlie Brown" is the only Bard inspired title of a "Peanuts Collection." Consequently, you will not find "Much Ado About Snoopy," "All's Well That Ends Well, Charlie Brown," or "The Peanut's Tale."
