A perfect learning tool
A compelling story of the development of mathematics. If students were taught from Osen's book, they would have greater appreciation and interest in this mportant subject. Teachers, especially, couldn make the subject of mathematics considerably more interestin.

Fantastic. A "must read" for any aspiring mathematician.
This book examines the lives of women mathematicians from antiquity to the present. Osen describes the trials, tribulations, and triumphs of some of history's most fascinating people with a perspective no male could bring to the subject. I'd love to discuss the matter with the author.

Profiles women mathemeticians, lives and contributions
Traces the lives of notable women whose work in mathematics is best appreciated through an under standing of the societies that shaped their lives. Traces the impact of their work; reinforces women's participation in enduring intellectual achievements and discounts the popular notion that we value mathematical ignorance as a social grace. Explains the power full satisfactions and aesthetic values which equal any other branch of knowledge.

Superb Work of Literature
I found this book some years back while I was wandering through a bookstore and I was immediately drawn to it. As a Women's Studies major, I have always been interested in fictional representations of domestic violence and this book was just what I had always been looking for. It is actually one of the resources I have drawn on for my senior thesis and I cannot recommend it enough. My copy is a little worse for wear because I enjoy sharing it with every woman and man I know. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in how the representations of violence against women have and have not changed in our mother's and grandmother's lifetimes.

A rare collection of abuse and strength
Susan Koppelman has created a marvelous and inspiring collection of women's stories about abuse and resistance.

Before each story. she includes a quote to elucidate the following piece. My favorite: "Some abusive people are adept at picking out a trait that a woman is most pleased about and using it against her...When an abused woman begins to doubt that she has that one special trait she has always felt secure about, the rest of her self-concept is quickly called into question." This quote, as well as many others, provide answers to the smug and uneducated who question how this could happen, and who might be the victims of cruelty and violence, both physical and emotional.

Koppelman has, through this varied collection, clearly shown us that there's no common profile of an abused woman. We could all be.

This book is a must read for everyone!

A superb collection of women's experiences of battering!
This extraordinary collection of fine women's stories collected and introduced by Susan Koppelman informs and reminds us of the widespread battering of women for over a century. And in the introductory notes prior to each story, Dr. Koppelman gives the reader extra information about the author and often about the times and conditions surrounding the depiction of abuse the woman, or women, suffer in each story. Still, every story left me feeling uplifted and proud to be a woman. What I found in these stories, over and over, is how little present day assumptions of entitlement held by abusive and battering men has changed! Batterers, then and now, assume they have the right to mistreat a woman or women as they do because they assume they are inherently superior and that they are preordained to do whatever they deem necessary to control and dominate women. These stories, however, tell us far more then the usual clinical 'case histories' of women victimized by men. These stories tell of courage, ingenuity and an almost super-human strength of spirit although some stories do tell of the eventual death of the battered women. As a woman, myself, who has found her own freedom from overbearing, abusive and cruel men...I am grateful to Dr. Koppelman for giving me and other women the collection of gems she has brought together in "Women in the Trees"! Other collections gathered together in other books edited by Susan Koppelman and introduced by her are equally remarkable and nurture the feminine spirit! I highly recommend "Women in the Trees" as well as her other books.

I laughed 'til I cried!
Sleeping throught the Night is a very funny look at Parenting. I was reading through tears of laughter for the majority of the book! For anyone who is a parent, but especially for new parents who are going through the experience at the same time, this book is a must-have!

You CAN only laugh!
I came upon this book quite by accident. I've not laughed quite as helplessly for a long time. I really got an ache in my side! Her style is simply delicious and the feelings picturised are so familiar that even as you laugh you get that gentle, comforting feeling of having someone understand just what it was like......

Great bedside reading
Sandi Kahn Shelton is just the sort of person I want to hear from at the end of a long day. Her stories about family mishaps made me laugh out loud--and helped me see the humor in my own life, too.

Words you can rely on!
This book is very practical. It contains a good selection of commonly used words in the English language. It is a handy book that you can take anywhere with you. It is indeed a very useful, thin dictionary that not only provides the meaning of each word listed, but also gives you a sentence using each word in its right context. Good value as well.

This is a wonderful book
When I first purchases this book, I did so because it was only a [price] when I purchased 501 spanish verbs for my Spanish II class. I figured, "Why not?" When I recieved it I was suprised and impressed what a wonderful learning tool it is. For any begining spanish students, there are very useful words that you won't find in 1st and 2nd year textbooks that are quite important. The sentences they use really do bring quite a bit of clarity to the use of the word. Also the sentences themselves have many words to help increase your vocabulary. Buy this book. It is very much worth it.

187 Tips for Artists: How to Create a Successful Art Career--and Have Fun in the Process!

Very helpful
Gulrich's book appeals to me precisely for what it DOESN'T have--lots of verbose padding. She cuts to the chase, with practical suggestions that really help. I'm a busy person who makes a living as an artist, so I don't have time to wade through empty prose. It's a cute, funny book, but more importantly, it's full of great ideas and her suggestions ring true. A great read for someone interested in the practical business of art.

I love this book!
there's no artist, at any level, who wouldn't get something out of this book. I've found it very helpful in my career.

Great gift idea.

"The 50 Greatest Cartoons : As selected by 1,000 Animation Proffesionals" was written by cartoon historian Jerry Beck. ...

Worth its weight in gold (and then some)!
I absolutely love this book. It is an invaluable resource for the animation fan. The book takes 50 of the greatest short subject cartoons ever made and discusses why they are considered great. With each cartoon mentioned, the animation professionals responsible for the cartoon discuss the inspiration behind the cartoon's creation, how the cartoon came to be, problems the artists faced, etc.

In the margins, there are articles which tell how characters in the cartoons named developed (such as Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse, Droopy, Tom and Jerry, Donald Duck and many more); some of the topics discussed are the character's inspiration, how the character evolved over the years, etc.

One segment I found particularly interesting was a segment in the book dealing with controversial cartoons, such as the racially offensive "Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs" and "Der Fueher's Face". The book also addresses sexual imagery in the cartoons (!) and includes some information about the content of many cartoons during World War II and why some are considered unwatchable today.

I couldn't recommend this book more highly to animation fans . .it covers every cartoon character/series imaginable, from the Looney Tunes to Disney to Woody Woodpecker, Betty Boop, and Tom and Jerry, and even includes an appendix listing some cartoons that didn't make the cut. (You will especially appreciate it if you are, like me, a Looney Tunes fan.)

Adorable!
This is the cutest book I've ever seen! It's a lovely introduction to Orthodox monastery life, which is often mysterious to kids and adults alike.

lovely and engaging
It's difficult to find good Orthodox reading material for kids...so this find was a delight. Though it supposed to be for older readers, my two year old adores this book. The illustrations are beautiful and the story teaches about life in an Orthodox monastery in a simple, gentle manner. All of my kids godsisters are getting one for Christmas this year!

Great, Grand, Fantastic
I think this book was a wonderful read for any actor or director, it lets you get back to the basics of acting: storytelling. Tim has a nice way of writing the book so that both a professional and a newbie can take something away from his book and apply it to thier approach. I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone in the acting profession.

Go Get This Book
You're bound to deeply appreciate this book. Tim McDonough has a intelligent and clear-eyed approach to speeches and monologues.

What is good about it: he's a no-nonsense writer, stressing clarity above all else. He has a deceptively simple understanding of how acting relates to storytelling that is truly wise, unique and fascinating.

This book will provide experienced and greenhand actors alike with a solid, grounded basis for digging into the plummiest of narrative speeches. It would be an eye-opener for an actor, a director or a teacher of these crafts.

For young actors -- or anyone looking to focus and improve their audition pieces -- this book will be your bible. Get your hands on it quick.

Advising and Supporting Teachers
This worthy handbook explores ways in which language teachers can best be advised and supported in their teaching situations. The authors provide a comprehensive review of literature to support their contention that the goal of training should be to develop independent, autonomous and professionally-minded teachers. Additionally, they demonstrate the central role feedback plays in helping teachers to become self-critical reflectors on their teaching experiences. Throughout, advisors are prompted to think about how they can move teachers on to higher level concerns and there are many good points to emerge especially in the area of talking to teachers (Chapters 6-9). Based on this excellent discussion, I also see a need for advisors themselves to reflect on their own practices especially in contexts where collaborative relationships with teachers and colleagues are not high on 'personal' agendas.

Teacher support
Advising and supporting teachers by Mick Randall and Barbara Thornton (CUP) is a fine addition to the literature on teacher support. It guides teacher educators on how they can give support to teachers in training especially during their teaching practice. This book challenges teacher supervisors to examine their own philosophy of teaching and supervision by having them reflect on various tasks (part 2 of the book) that consist of case studies, observation tasks, role plays, feedback techniques and various other activities. The book begins by setting the scene for teacher supervision and offers a humanistic approach to helping trainee teachers through their teaching practice.
This book is really a must read for any teacher trainer/educator that is involved with teachers on the practicum. It offers many provocative tasks and approaches to teacher supervision and can be utilized pretty much in any context (although it is very much British influenced). Regardless of how much a teacher educator can implement from this book, just one reading of it will remind teacher supervisors just how much they may take for granted when supervising trainee teachers on teaching practice. However, given the workload that many supervisors are burdened with, I wonder how, and when they will get enough time to reflect on the tasks! So the book would be most suitable for trainee supervisors that have more time to discuss these tasks. That said, I recommend this book to all supervisors of teachers as well, so that they can reflect on the complexities of supporting new teachers. This book offers support for these teacher supervisor

A thorough investigation of the "I" in poetry/autobiography.
I am at work on my master's thesis (an exploration of the "boundaries" of autobiography as discourse/genre), and this book has proven to be an extremely valuable resource. The essays collected here not only dive into many aspects of poetry as autobiography (theory and criticism, including Postmodern/Poststructuralist approaches as well as Formalist and Romantic approaches), but they also investigate each genre separately, giving the reader a many-faceted view of what we mean when we write "I." The authors represented in this collection are highly respected and accomplished authors, poets, and literary theorists, yet their writing is conversational and accessible. Highly recommended.

After Confession: Poetry As Autobiography
Simply great, informative and most accessable. I'm looking forward to Vol. 2.
