Peace At Last
For anyone who's wanted to say something, but let the possible consequence of the response stop them from doing so, I'd like to recommend reading this book. While you certainly don't have to send the letters you write, I did, and found a great weight had been lifted when I did. And a friendship was restored.

Resolving life's problems through letter-writing.
Everyone has their problems, their joys, their sorrows. Ilene Segalove gives everyone an opportunity to sort through the problems and celebrate the joys through writing inspirtational and thought-provoking letters to ourselves, our loved ones or even to inatiment objects. What's even better: You never have to send them. Segalove provides the first line to get you thinking on some serious or joyful topics. If you need to argue, yell, thank someone, have a pitty party.....Segalove provides a healthy and easy way to let those emotions out. Her book is helpful, enjoyable and perfect way to "close the book" on unresolved issues.

this book is for people who need help expressing themselves
unwritten letters is the best kind of journal anyone who has trouble expressing themselves needs. i always find that i cant quite express my feelings to certain people and i never had anyway of expressing myself until i got this book. now i refer to it anytime i need to let any uncertain or certain feelings out.

Handy--even for fully bilingual people.
I agree with everyone else...this dictionary is complete and concise. I am a comparative literature major and this dictionary helps a lot when I have to translate passages on my papers, and when I am trying to get around those distinct words in either English or Spanish which do not have an exact equivalent. So there you go, I highly recommend it.

it's Everything
I am a spanish major and my parents bought me this dictionary. I have never seen such a complete dictionary! Not once in the past 3 years that I have had it, have I not been able to find the word I was looking for. Plus the entries are easy to understand. There are not a bunch of complicated symbols preceeding each word. It is great for beginners and even for more advanced students. I highly recommend it!

I strongly recomended to everyone!
This dictionary is very good and I have used it for many years. I have yet to come across a word that I wasn't able to find. I love the middle section that gives you tons of expressions in one language and gives you the equivalent in the other.

A very different book on journal writing
I decided to read this book the way I've always read books on "how to", and then done nothing as usual. My "how to" books subsequently sit on the shelf and gather dust and/or are donated to the community thrift. To this day I don't keep a journal, and I don't "write", but I return to this book a few times a year because it's a great pleasure to read. It offers enormous consolations like a quiet friend. This is a wonderfully crafted, generous, and compassionate book.

Read and you will sigh...
Who would've thought to write a book about the journaling process in a journal format? Duh! Full of epiphany after epiphany and lovely contemplation.

This book made my writing more exciting and my life more fun
A Walk Between Heaven and Earth is a great book not only for creative writers, but for everyone who wants to lead a more satisfying life. Holzer's journal entries transmit a deep understanding of what it means to be a writer and what it means to be fully alive. I felt gently and powerfully guided by her personal life experiences to break away from the analytical rules that have kept me from writing what really moves me. And my own writing process has become ten times more exciting than it ever was in years of college classes and work as a magazine editor. This book has helped me embrace my own pain and joy in a way I had never considered.

Psychotherapist and priest Dr. Lauren Artress says, "To walk a sacred path is to discover our inner sacred space: that core of feeling that is waiting to have life breathed back into it through symbols, archetypal forms like the labyrinth, rituals, stories, and myths." In her eloquent treatise, she champions the use of the labyrinth as a way of rediscovering one's spiritual center. In Walking a Sacred Path, written in 1995, Artress tells the story of her own spiritual seeking and how a labyrinth came to be built at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. Sharing the vision of sacred geometry through the ages, she poetically recounts its wonderful effects. The author is deeply concerned about the environmental and spiritual crisis near the end of the millennium and offers illumination on the path to greater self-understanding, healing, and true spirituality. "Religion," she says, quoting an unknown source, "is for those scared to death of hell. Spirituality is for those who've been there." --P. Randall Cohan

Read this book!
This book has great depth and profound meaning for anyone on their own sacred path. It has helped me to begin to understand the mystery that is the labyrinth. If you've never walked a labyrinth, this book can introduce this ancient practice to you. If you have walked a labyrinth, consider yourself fortunate to have such wisdom and insight from the Rev. Artress. This book is a must-read for anyone wishing to have a deeper connection to God.

Excellent ideas..well written..resources available.
Just returned from walking the Labyrinth at Grace Cathedral. A graced space. A healing pace. A slowing down. A looking inward. A looking outward. An appropriate fit between ancient symbol and present reality. This book provides historical information as well as possible creation of a local labyrinth.

A must for anyone interested in the labyrinth.
Lauren Artress has presented a very comprehensive treatment of the subject of labyrinths. Many people have absolutely no knowledge of labyrinths and feel it must be a New Age device. Artress gives a great deal of historical background and puts the use of the labyrinth in a modern perspective,as well. She also deals with the metaphors and symbolism inherent in the labyrinth.

In this broken and aching world, the labyrinth offers us all a chance to explore the path to healing and wholeness. Artress is an Episcopal priest and a Jungian Psychologist. She offers many reasons for walking the labyrinth, as well as possible approaches to the walk. She happens to work in a church but this meditational tool can be used by people of all cultures abd religions. It is a way to go on a personal pilgrimage to become better acquainted with oneself.

Lauren Artress is very involved with the technique of the labyrinth and she inspires others to experience it for themselves.

A dramatic story rescued from what historians forgot
Long before Rosa Parks refused the disrespectful order
to go to the back of the bus in Montgomery, Alabama,
came Homer Plessy, the young shoemaker who knew he'd be
arrested for refusing to leave the "whites only" car on
the New Orleans railroad. He refused to go to the
segregated car in order to make the point that the law
was cruel and unjust. A federal case was made of it,
and in the end, the US Supreme Court made segregation
the law of the land for the next 53 years. The high
court ruled that "separate but equal" was fair and
equitable but history has proven there was nothing fair
nor equal about that decision. History also proves
there was no justice in that high court opinion and no
wisdom or sense of human rights residing with the
Justices who issued it.

In "We as Freemen," Keith Medley uncovers the rich and
intriguing history of the personalities who fought for
equality 30 years after the Civil war ended, but
generations before U.S. rulers ended legal
discrimination based on skin color. In carefully
crafted prose, the author is apparently the first
researcher to explore the character, mores and lives of
the long forgotten men of the Comité des Citoyen
(Committee of Citizens) who planned and carried out the
peaceful challenge to Louisiana's Separate Car Act of
1890. Homer Plessy did not suddenly challenge
segregation. In a story well-told, Medley turned up
primary research found in dusty nooks and crannies, and
church, library and cemetery logs around New Orleans,
which is his hometown. He describes the efforts of
businessmen, lawyers, educators, and artisans to stop
segregation from taking hold in the South. They
conducted their campaign while the forces of reaction
were regaining political control after the Civil War.
The Comité aimed "to obtain a United States Supreme
Court ruling preventing states from abolishing the
suffrage and equal access gains of the Reconstruction
period that followed the Civil War."

Medley manages to summon Homer Plessy from the
obscurity Jeremy Irons identifies in his "A People's
History of the Supreme Court" (Penguin: 1999) with new
research that portrays Plessy as a quiet, hardworking
man anxious not to be treated disrespectfully because
of his heritage and skin color.

Like the U.S. Supreme Court's 1857 Dred Scott decision,
which barred slaves and their descendants from
citizenship, the high court's decision in Plessy vs.
Ferguson was demeaning and hurtful to millions of
people. The high court decision in Plessy divided the
population, causing widespread suffering. For this
reason, it is useful to recall the dark side of Supreme
Court history and to appreciate that the Justices are,
for better or worse, political appointees who often
press their own viewpoints, which tend also to
represent the narrow views of the class of politicians
who appoint them. Or as Irons put the Plessy decision
in context, amid growing strife "the Court remained a
bastion of conservatism, earning this banquet toast
from a New York banker in 1895: 'I give you, gentlemen,
the Supreme Court of the United States- -guardian of
the dollar, defender of private property, enemy of
spoliation, sheet anchor of the Republic.' "

In 1857 and again in 1896, the Supreme Court inflicted
upon the public the views of Southern plantation owners
and thuggish ideologues, a tiny but disproportionately
powerful part of the population.

In short order, the Comité "formulated legal strategy
while raising money from the neighborhoods of New
Orleans, small towns throughout the South, and in
cities as far away as Washington D.C. and San
Francisco" and published their views in the African-
American daily, The Crusader. Medley documents the
heroic role of The Crusader in the battle for human
rights in the humid South. The Comité held popular

rallies, and did all anyone can do within democratic
structures to organize resistance to the dark era of
ignorance spreading through the legislatures, town
halls and courtrooms controlled by rich white American
men across the South. (Women would wait another
generation to win the right to vote.) And, it would be
more than five long decades before the wrongs of the
high court's Plessy decision would be reversed, in part
due to arguments put forward by then lawyer Thurgood

Marshall to the high court sitting in 1954. Marshall
argued the case in conjunction with the re-awakening
across the land of the persistent struggle for Civil
Rights.

I highly recommend Keith Medley's "We as Freemen" and I
particularly like that he was able to locate
photographs portraying those who fought bravely but
lost a key round in the struggle for human rights.

A Roadmap for change
"We As Freemen" is a book that reminds us that the names impressed on our court cases were people with professions, families and all of the messy problems of ordinary life. The author draws on original documentation to illustrate the pains of the free and newly free Black populace as they watched their liberties curtailed or removed entirely. It was interesting to read the precise legal choices of the Comite des Citoyens as they moved to ensure that the charges against Plessy be properly drawn (This was reminiscent of Taylor Branch's "Parting the Waters"). The text is clear and dramatic. It could easily serve both as a warning of how freedom is lost and as encouragement for anyone seeking a roadmap for change.

The Story Behind Plessy vs. Ferguson is Finally Told
We as Freemen captures the imagination of the reader from its wonderfully illustrated cover to the very end; and it just won't let go. Keith Medley reveals a great deal about the people, organizations, strategies and tactics behind Plessy vs.
Ferguson.

Well-written. Well-documented. Well done!

Informative and entertaining and very interesting
I have just finished reading Michael Yergin's new novel Kill Talk- a true story about the Mafia's plans to take over the federal prison system and the kidnapping amd murder of a beautiful young Chicago woman who is in the mob. A great read-could not put it down. I anxiously await the movie. Someone told be about Yergin's book on wealth building-I read it and found it very well written and it showed the diversity of one of Chicago's most talented writers(in my humle opinion)

Informative and entertaining and very interesting
I have read two of Michael Yergin's previous books on other subjects and some of his screenplays. Similiar to his cousin Danny Yergin (who has won two Pulitzer's;) Michael has a keen wit and great sense of humor.

Exceptional easy ot read primer on rare coin investing
I had always wanted to understand the rare coin business as more than just a hobby. This book gave me a great start and valuable insight into the world of numismatics

What Her Body Thought

Illness is often a transformative experience. In What Her Body Thought, Pulitzer Prize-nominated poet Susan Griffin describes the years of suffering and frustration that marked her battle against an autoimmune fatigue disorder. Her experience comes to resonate in her own mind with the fate of the famous 19th-century courtesan Marie Duplessis, the inspiration for both Dumas's La Dame Aux Camelias and Verdi's La Traviata (and, by extension, the 1937 Garbo classic Camille). Griffin is not the first writer, of course, to tackle the notion of disease as social epiphany--among the most notable are Norman Cousins (Anatomy of an Illness as Perceived by the Patient) and Susan Sontag (Illness as Metaphor). But Griffin is a particularly fearless teacher; she writes passionately about the culture of blame that attaches words like psychosomatic to etiologies it does not fully understand. And as her disease drains personal and financial resources, she discovers how terrifyingly easy it is to become someone whom society overlooks. We have made progress since the 19th century in our understanding of health and medicine, Griffin concludes, but we have failed miserably in our social obligation to extend those benefits to all who suffer and to teach compassion to those who don't. --Patrizia DiLucchio

Invisible Illness not so invisible to the bearer
This is one of the most eloquent books I have read on the subject of chronic illness, in particular chronic illness which is not easily identified: "invisible illness, Susan calls it. She writes with authority because she has walked in those shoes. When standing in line and feeling totally exhausted because of her illness, another woman is wheeled to the front of the line in a wheelchair. Thus the perfect illustration of the difficulty. She uses the classic Dumas novel "Camille" to illustrate the status of the sufferer, and the reaction of those surrounding her. This is a book of perspective, and one that should be read by anyone in the caring professions, and anyone with a loved one who has an "invisible" illness.

exposes New Age moralism
I found this book to be one of, if not *the* best book I have ever read on the subject of illness. Susan Griffin writes from experience, and yet manages to write an objective, thoughtful book on illness and what it means to society. Although New Age prides itself in having escaped the restrictive judgments of past centuries, and mind/body philosophies and metaphysics portray themselves as more enlightened, Susan exposes the underlying hypothesis for what it is--the same old moralism: "If you think the right thoughts, you won't be ill." "You are ill because there is something for you to learn." We still want to believe, she points out, that we are greater than Nature, that we are in control. Yet, anyone who has had a chronic or severe illness knows how very little control we do have. Perhaps, after all, New Age is just another way of dealing with the knowledge that someday, no matter how good we are, we all will suffer and die.

Thank You, Susan Griffin!
As a sufferer of CIFIDS, I found it wonderful to read about someone else's experiences with the disease, and to know that the things I experience are not in my head, after all. Griffin's book brought tears to my eyes more than once, as her comparison of her experiences to those of Marie Duplessis is both beautiful and painful. This book had a powerful effect on me, one that I can't really put in words. All I can say is: Thank You!

An iguana is no picnic
Speaking as someone who has inherited two iguanas from my brother, they aren't easy animals to care for. People tend to think that they're like cats, that you can just let them roam freely without a thought. But iguanas are complicated pets, with very specific needs in terms of food, temperature, and attention. This book is an excellent introduction to anyone who either owns an iguana or is considering owning one. They aren't just simple lizards. They're like children, with all the same needs and demands. I daresay that iguanas even have emotional needs that aren't often talked about, and my one disappointment about this book was that, like all the others, it tends to downplay the emotional complexity of reptiles. Lizards do get lonely, just like dogs. If you leave an iguana to roam freely in a troubled household, I guarantee you will learn to recognize a neurotic lizard. No, they don't become obsessive-compulsive or anything. But I've seen iguanas refuse to eat, tear up kitchens and sofas out of spite, intentionally hurt themselves, and bite dinner guests. The book is a tremendous guide to these sensitive animals, but it does not delve deeply into rehabilitating those pets that have been mistreated in the past, and one should never think that just because reptiles lack the same brain structure as mammals that they bear no signs of earlier abuse. Iguanas need love just like everything else, from ferrets to pythons, and the book, while solid in the practical sense, needs to stress this even more.

Best guide for illnesses and health about Iguana`s
This book will show you whats wrong with your Iguana. And let you know what to do in a situation that you don`t know what to do. This book will help you raise your Iguana, I highly recomend this book

Good for new owners
This book would be a good starter book for new iguana owners. It tells you things from their eating habits, changing colors, injuries, temp setting and and so forth.

If you are a new iguana owner or are considering to buy one of these reptiles I would recommend this one to start you off.

excellent introductory text to female australian poets
Elegant language on both sides of the tape-recorder. A dialogue of great verve and flair.

Distinctive and perceptive
This is a marvellous book. Digby has written a very accessible book of interview with Australian female poets. The best thing about this book, for me, is the way it captures the ebb and flow of the creative process and the determination of female creators in the face of ridicule and discrimination.
