Pleasure, inspiration AND education.
Nonfiction with all the excitement of a novel. It reads easily, stays on track, holds the reader's interest and has to have wide appeal. How a physician barely survives a frightening disease and manages to achieve some lifelong dreams in the face of extreme adversity. It offers special insight to all of us as potential patients or medical providers, with some special appeal to runners and endurance athletes.

Great Read!
Wonderful book with a lot of insight on the doctor being the patient. Despite the seriousness of the subject (diagnosis and treatment of lymphoma), it is sprinkled with humorous anecdotes about medical sub-specialists and medical training. Gives insight into physician thinking and training that should prove enlightening to non-physicians. A well-written, wise book by a great doctor.

moving and fascinating perspective on being a patient
This book is a refreshingly candid, funny, and moving account of one physician's experiences as a patient with a serious and often fatal illness. I found it difficult to put down, extremely well written, and accessible to both lay public and medical professional. Dr. Kurland's account is an important addition to the genre addressing the patient experience. It is must reading for anyone involved in patient care... and anyone who might be a patient...

A patients perspective
WOW! Thanks Martin Martinez for having the courage to come forward with this life saving information. I am a patient who uses marijuana to treat my debilitating migraine headaches. I believe marijuana has saved my life. I have also worked with cancer, AIDS and other seriously ill patients whose lives have been saved by this magical medicinal herb. Im so glad to see a book written for the patient population that adequately explains how to heal with marijuana. Finally, we have a book written by a patient for the patients! Lets get this life saving information out there so that other patients lives can be saved by having the tools and information to heal with medical marijuana. Thanks again Martin. You definitely are an ANGEL from heaven.

Gave it my Father and he actually liked it
I used to smoke marijuana when I was at college and recently my dad was diagnosed with MS, I thought marijuana would help him with the pain but he was really against it. I gave him this book and amazingly he read it and after discussing it with his doctor is now eating a cookie once a day. It won't cure him but it really helps him deal with the pain. Thanks for a well researched honest book.

The New Prescription-Marijuana As Medicine
Finally a concise, articulate and user friendly book on the controversial subject of medicinal Marijuana, available from Quick American Archives Publishing. "The New Prescription-Marijuana As Medicine" by Martin Martinez relies both on anecdotal evidence and scientific study to outline the myriad of positive applications the cannabis plant offers in the treatment and managment of many modern illnesses.

With an insightful forward by Seattle medical marijuana activist Dr.Francis Podrebarec, The New Prescription details the failures of past and current administrations to even allow clinical study of the medicinal properties of the multi-faceted plant, while chronicling it's extensive history dating back thousands of years.

As informative but more user friendly than it's counterpart the "Marijuana Medical Handbook" (Ed Rosenthal, Dale Gieringer, Tod Mikuriya, M.D.), Martinez' work does not limit itself to professing only the positive aspects of the illicit weed. In addition to extolling the virtues of marijuana's effect on illnesses from cancer, multiple sclerosis and even anorexia, there are chapters exploring anxiety attacks, delerium and dependence.

This is a well written, plain english layman's guide to medical cannabis in an easy to read format. Complete with appendices, extensive notes, and bibliography, The New Perscription is a thoughtful, serious work dedicated to informing the inquisitive reader from an unbiased yet accurate perspective. This promises to be a must have for activists, patients and medical professionals.

TERIFFIC
HEARD ABOUT BOOK VIA ART BELL RADIO SHOW. ONE THING: DID NOT KNOW AS AUTHOR CLAIMED, THAT 1994 CRIME CONTROL ACT OF CONGRESS FORBADES HOARDING MORE THAN A 6 MONTH SUPPLY OF FOOD. AUTHOR WELL LEARNED, ARTICULATE AND WELL ABOVE GROUND, IN CLEAR THINKING; RICH IN PRACTICAL ADVICE. THIS IS A SUPER BOOK.

The all-in-one #1 book; easy to read and 100% practical
I loved all the hints and practicality of this book, it was full of pictures and charts and other resources.

a guide on how to survive a nuclear attack.
This is the first book that I have read, that covers all phases of surviving a nuclear attack. It is the authors view that the chances of a surprise attack has actually increased since the end of of the Cold War. But he clearly shows that it is quit possible to survive an attack. The book is not politically correct, making it enjoyable to read and study.

Good tool for increasing your spoken expressions!
I found this book very useful for someone who wants to increase his conversational skills in a short period. You can find lots of expressions organized by topic. It is helpful in the sense that there are words with which you were acquainted at some point, and this book serves to refresh your memory of some forgotten expressions. It's just like entering data to your brain. This book is not intended to entertain you; it is rather in the form of a dictionary, and reading a dictionary is no fun. But if your ultimate goal is to broaden your expressions, this book is an excellent tool.

I dare to speak English because this book.
If you have the basic knowledge of English grammar and vocabulary, this book is definitely for you. The first complex phrase that I dared to speak in front of the native English speaker was from this book. The questions that I asked frequently in the public were from this book. The topics that we talked a lot were also from this book. Even I learned some very useful phrases from this book for flirting with the people who I like and turning the people who I dislike down in chat-room. This is a must-have book for the learner of English.

An excellent book for learning Amercian spoken English
I strongly recommend this book for those who (especially, international students, businessmen and tourists) would like to understand American spoken English and express themselves using American spoken English. All the everyday expressions are arranged according to real situation. You can learn everyday expressions very effectively by reading and using this excellent book!

Orange As Marmalade

well-crafted story
Even people who aren't wild about cats can enjoy Orange as Marmalade. It has warm, interesting people, who seem to be growing and learning throughout the book. They are people I want to get to know even more about, because I care about what happens to them. I'm looking forward to the next one in the series.

Delightfully written
Fran Stewart's book is delightful and holds your interest using a warm, friendly style. She also uses a unique format for telling her story, weaving the plot to keep you in suspense. Lots of useful information on gardening, natural healing, and, of course, cats! Mystery, fun, and learning - what more can you ask from a book! Her book club discussion questions at the end are quite thought provoking, even for someone who hasn't read the book. Hard to believe this is Ms. Stewart's first book. Kinda leaves you feeling like you've read a mystery from Mitford! Can't wait to read the next Biscuit McKee Mystery.

An excellent Cozy
Orange As Marmalade is one of the best "cozies" I've read. (A cozy is a mystery book that is low on blood, gore, and creepy people.) Characters are well drawn, plot is believeable and holds the reader's interest, and there is a great list of topics for book discussion groups.
Read it and learn (effortlessly) about gardening, cats, and neighborliness. Have fun.

PALATINE ROOTS: The 1710 German Settlement in New York as Experienced by Johann Peter
Published in Hardcover by Picton Press (01 January, 1994)
Author: Nancy Wagoner Dixon
Amazon base price: $49.50
Average review score:

FASCINATING BOOK!!!
This book is a suspenseful and absolutely captivating story of the Palatine experience, based entirely on historical facts. Mrs. Dixon does a superb job of using the historical facts as the basis for giving personal glimpses into the people's lives. She gives a stunning feel for what life was like for the Palatines, both in their homeland and then through the nightmare of emigration. The people were fleeing horrible conditions in hope of a better life. The hardships and tragedy the people endured was staggering as they made their way to America and strove against more disappointment and setbacks to make their dreams come true. This book made my ancestors come alive for me, and I was left with a sense of awe and appreciation for the sacrifices they made to bring themselves (and ultimately their descendants) to America. This book is a "must-have" for any Wagner descendant, and will fascinate anyone with any interest in the Palatines or in the immigration experiences of the past.

Great Piece of Work
Nancy Dixon has done a very good job of piecing together the experiences of those of her ancestors who came among the Palatine Germans around 1710, to upstate New York. This is not a general work of genealogy with passenger lists and lists of families, but is more specific to her own clan. This in no way takes away from the book as her history may be extrapolated to cover the experiences of many of the Palatine families who were in similar straits. Nancy knows when she can take the liberty of poetic description, and has not turned this book into historical fiction. It is a decent work of history, and if you have Palatine roots, I strongly recomend it.

Review published elsewhere.
A formal review of this book appears in the January, 1996, issue of the New England Historical and Genealogical Register

Parent As Mystic, Mystic As Parent
Published in Hardcover by Penguin USA (Paper) (December, 1998)
Author: David Spangler

Used price: $1.19
Collectible price: $5.00

From the author of The Call comes an exquisite memoir on the mystical act of parenting. Although Spangler possesses numerous gifts as a writer and spiritual leader (he is a former coleader of Scotland's spiritual community Findhorn), his most meaningful life work has always taken place within the boundaries of marriage and parenthood (he is the father of four children). So it was only fitting that this self-described "freelance mystic" finally shed his wisdom and humor upon this sacred and mundane act. "We may think of mysticism as the dimension of complex issues of theology and spiritual cosmology, but it is really much simpler," explains Spangler. "It is, at heart, about learning how to recognize and work with the connectedness of the world, the wholeness of all things. Love is at its root, and love is equally at the root of what we do as parents. It is in the spirit of this common rootedness that the parent embodies the mystic and mystic the parent."

In sharing his parenting challenges (such as staying present in the presence of a flailing, crying baby or trying to honor a daughter's yearning to become a racehorse jockey), Spangler has packaged a book so tender and profound that parents cannot help but be inspired to bring their highest and most joyful selves to every interaction of parenthood. --Gail Hudson

Inspirational for parents
This book is a sweet reminder that being a parent and having a spiritual practice are not mutually exclusive paths. David's warmth and wit are pure inspiration, reminding us of the supremely important work of shaping the future--otherwise known as parenting.

Wish I had read this excellent book when I was a parent!
I bought this book at a conference to give to my daughter who is a new parent, and ended up reading it myself. I'm glad I did! It is an excellent book which leads you into surprising depths in a very warm and witty way. I wish I had had the benefit of Spangler's insights and philosophy when my children were all at home, but I found the teachings in this book are every bit as applicable and useful to me now as a person pursuing a spiritual path as they would have been when I was more actively parenting. This book is a wonderful discovery, and I intend to keep my copy for myself and get another for my daughter and now for my son as well, who is single!

Invites us to be mystics in midst of ordinary tasks.
Some books challenge classification. Is this book meant for parents? Most definitely! But it's also for all those seeking to live as mystics in the everyday reality of our lives. And whether one is a parent or not, this wise, delightful, reflective and unpredictable little book offers a perspective which may forever alter the way one thinks of parenting and being a mystic.

While I am not a parent, I AM a doting aunt, bountiful fairy godmother, proud great aunt, and occasionally, a weekend substitiute for my parent friends when they travel. So I too found myself laughing at some of David Spangler's hilarious tales of the adventures of parenting and moved by his vision of the mystical nature of parenting. What he is saying is that one may touch into the heart of God or the Oneness or the Mystery in the very midst of our ordinary moments. And how better to do that than to walk through the days of a parent who chooses to find the sacred amidst diapering, carpooling, comforting and all the daily crises and celebrations that define parenting?

I particularly love it when I am challenged to look at a common reality as in the chapter "Aliens". The author suggests we view children as though they were aliens we were in a "first contact" situation. Would that change our attitudes to ones of respect, listening and co-operation? It reminded me of the sense of privilege I feel when I am invited into a child's world if only for a short while.

And I think my favorite chapter is the one called "Laps". "A lap is a parent's best friend, a tool of transformation that would make any magician green with envy." Laps are places of calm, centering, safety and love - and always potentially available. How would it be to imagine ourselves holding each other, ourselves, the world - even God - on our "laps"? As the author says, "to discover God, make a lap!"

The language throughout is simple, poetic and warm with vivid images and lots of gentle humor. There is an overwhelming sense of compassion for and identification with the struggles of exhausted parents as well as a sheer delight in the unfolding miracles which children are.

So my recommendation: read this book - whether you are a parent or a friend of a parent, or a metaphorical parent to your work, your community, the world. Give this book to your friends who are parents, and your friends who are struggling to be mystics. Keep one on your bedside table. And - make a lap!

A Peculiar People: The Church As Culture in a Post-Christian Society

Profound book. A must read for every Christian.
Rodney Clapp paints a beautiful picture of what it means to be the church. For those of us who have been through countless church splits, arguments, and petty bickering, it gives hope. Yet at the same time it strongly convicts, pushing us toward a higher and more lofty goal. Definitely read this book.

This book will push you to think outside the box
Rodney Clapp's book totally transformed my view of the nature and purpose of the church. Instead of viewing the church as a collection of individuals with a particular philosophy, ideology, or political agenda; Clapp identifies the church as a community that composes a new culture. This culture, he says, should be in the business of transforming society and individuals through what he calls "sanctified subversion". That is, instead of withdrawing from the mainstream culture into our own Christian ghetto (the all too prevalent fortress mentality found among most politically and theologically conservative Christians), he says that the church must seek to interact with and redeem the things of secular society by modeling a new kind of community. However, this transformation should be about developing the church into a genuine culture and subtly reaching out to the culture around it rather than about the church dominating secular society through round after round of political power plays in the so-called "culture wars." The issue is not "taking back America" but taking back the church, allowing it to genuinely be the church as distinct, but not isolated from the broader culture.

Clapp presents an odd but appealing mixture of Reformed, Anabaptist, and postmodern perspectives. He crosses boundaries of liberal and conservative, traditional and postmodern, historic and contemporary. If you like closed, neatly defined categories of what is acceptable for the church you won't like this book. But if you want a book that presents and radical (but historic) vision of what the church should be then I highly recommend this book.

Dynamic Holiness in a Postmodern World
This is an excellent book for those who want to be challenged out of today's complacent Christianity. Clapp provides a clear vision of how the church can be dynamic and authentic in a postmodern society. He calls the church to an awareness of the syncretism that exists in our own time, and renews the vision of an authentic church that is its own distinct culture.
