Slow Way Home - Heart-Touching Book!
This story of Brandon's life is so true of the way many children live today, in homes with parents who never consider the emotional trauma they bring on the children. But Brandon, like many others, has loving grandparents who will stop at nothing to give him the life he deserves. Many other influential people are there for him along the way.
This is a touching story for me because my husband lived with his grandparents, and Michael Morris describes the life just as I've heard my husband do many times.
You must read this book. I've also read Michael's book "A Place Called Wiregrass" and it was great too but this one really touched my heart in a way no other book has. Read both of Michael's books, and I'm certain you won't be disappointed. Michael Morris is an excellent writer, and I'm looking forward to reading many books by him in the future.

Don't Miss Slow Way Home!
This is the first novel I've found since ELLEN FOSTER that moved me in such a profound way. The voice of this child, Brandon, stayed with me. The story line brings Brandon into contact with many lively characters. But in the end, its the voices of Brandon and Siser Delores (his African American preacher) that resonate. This book is beautifully written. Now, I can't wait to read this author's other books. Don't miss SLOW WAY HOME!

A treat
Having heard the author read this novel at Prairie Lights I knew that I was in for a treat. He made the characters come to life and I couldn't wait to dive into the story. Since then, I've passed the book along to all of my sisters and they agree that it is a winner.

This novel is one of hardship and hope; family and redemption. The narrator in the novel is a young boy who is caught in the middle of it all. He tells a beautiful story without coming across as pitiful. A touching ending makes this novel one of the most memorable that I've read this year.

The Wiseguy Cookbook
When you grow up with an Italian mom who cooks dishes that nobody else has ever heard of you wonder if you are the only person that has tasted such amazing dishes. Well I don't wonder anymore. The recipes are wonderful. I grew up cooking most of the dishes written about in this book and must say Henry's recipes taste just like "mom's" - in fact just a bit better.... I think this book is extremely well written not only for the "advanced" cook but also for the "novice" cook as I bought a copy for my son and he now uses it to prepare dinner for his family. If you want to cook real "Italian" food - this is your book.

Thanks, Henry
When the rumors began flying about this book I laughed. What! Now this guy is doing a cookbook! I was intrigued. I received the book today, read it from cover to cover and made garbanzo bean salad and grilled eggplant, hey, pretty damn good! I plan a trip to the grocery store tomorrow for ingredients of fresh herbs a few spices and such to try out more recipes, will surprise the husband....."men love variety".
This book flows naturally, the stories introducing the recipes, the rules, tips and advice all flow very well. It's an easy and entertaining read. Definitely will play around with these recipes for a long time. There are recipes for the beginner to the more serious and experienced house chef.
Henry Hill is a great storyteller, honest and sincere, this quality really shines in this book. Forget the wiseguy and goodfella aspects of Henry Hill for a second, read between the lines and you'll find that he shares a part of himself that is really close to his heart, his love of cooking, the recipes and what it all means to him. I'm sure many can relate. I recommend this cookbook, not as a novelty but as a real collection of authentic Italian recipes,in addition to some old all American favorites. It's impressive.

I love this cookbook!!
I finally have learned how to cook since I purchased this cookbook!! The helpful hints Henry gives about how to make the
dishes are awesome! I have never eaten or cooked so well! The
stories behind the recipes are fun and interesting reading! Love
you Henry!!

Ricky Jay Must Reprint
This book was published in 1988 by Warner Brothers books. It's paperback, 130 pages, and has over 100 how-to pictures. This book will show you how to throw playing cards farther, faster and harder than you ever thought possible. The chapters of the book are as follows:

1. History

2. Cards and the Martial Arts

3. Magicians and Card Scaling

4. Technique

5. Advanced Technique

6. How to Practice and Stay Fit

7. Self-Defense

8. Stunts to Impress One's Friends

9. Personal Anecdotes

10. Afterword

This books explains such card throws as the Boomerang Card, the Long-Distance Spinner, the Flick, the Back-of-the-hand Flick, the Finger Flick, the Foot Flick, Card Juggling, the Lethal Four Card Fist, the Butterfly Swirl, the Sea Urchin Spin, and the Dolphin Dart. Shows alternative throwing methods such as the Martin Lewis Method, the Thurston Grip, the Jay Grip, and the Herrmann Grip. This is the book that made Jon Wedd famous for his appearance on MTV's "Unfiltered" news show. Ricky Jay held the Guinness world record for card throwing in 1976. He also wrote the book "Learned Pigs and Fireproof Women"

Greatest Book Ever
I like this book so much, I stole it from the library. Ricky Jay has reprinted other of his books like "Learned Pigs and Fireproof Women" why can't he reprint "cards as weapons"

1. History A brief account of the origins of playing cards with some subtle speculation as to when they were first thrown (Very Interesting)

2. Cards and the Martial Arts A reflective look at the shuriken and other deadly throwing weapons of the venerable Orientals with a lucid parallel to the modern card assassin. (Very Very Interesting)

3. Magicians and Card-Scaling Historical accounts of the scaling of cards into the far reaches of small theaters. A feat of skill included in the stage shows of famous magicians, with particular emphasis on Herrmann the Great and the Amazing Thurston. 4. Technique The basics of card-throwing (illustrated); the Herrmann method, the Thurston method, and the Jay method. The hand, the wrist, the grip, and the all important follow-through. 5. Advanced Technique How to throw a card and make it return to the hand. A simulacrum of the Australian boomerang. Also--fancy one-hand throws and catches for the serious student....

6. How to Practice and Stay Fit The hows and wheres of practice; technique to keep the fingers limber and a short medical study of card-thrower's arm and its relationship to tennis elbow, surfer's knobs, and Frisbee finger...

7. Self-Defense A prejudiced enquiry into the advatages of cards over more conventional weaponry. Special sections on self-defense against plastics and humans, and pertinent discussion of cards as pest control. Also, an added bonus: The secret fighting technique against multiple adversaries, the lethal "four card fist." And a second bonus: The consumer's guide to mechanical card throwing. (Very Very Very Very Interesting)

8. Stunts to Impress One's Friends An effective battery of crowd-pleasing demonstrations from the author's own repertoire. Included are award-winning throws such as: card over a building, the classic card through newspaper, and the kudo-copping "card-cuts-cigarette-in-mouth." (Very... Interesting)

9. Personal Anecdotes In which the author recounts with clarity and exaggeration how he has helped the elderly, abetted the police, and assuaged the plight of young damsels with the help of his trusty cards. (Interesting)

This Book would make a come back if Reprinted

I would also recommend "Learned Pigs & Fireproof Women" by Ricky Jay

Why this book is so expensive
Mr. Jay's book is well researched, and it does a fine job of teaching you to throw a card great distances, better known as card scaling. Mr. Jay is an excellent magician and an author of magic history books.

However, the reason this book is in such demand is that the photographs reveal you (or of course your lovely assistant) need not wear clothes to scale cards. This what one reviewer here called "wonderful, eye-catching photographs." Fair enough, it's Playboy stuff.

Therefore, it is tough to know just how serious Ricky Jay is being here. (I have personally watched in magic shops, years ago, as young men magii tried to buy a copy of this book when it was in stock at its original list price. They failed due to the nude photographs.)

The used book prices of this title are crazy.

thigh-slapping, belly-laughing, hilarious
Five stars plus! I am thrilled that Patrick Dennis' "Little Me" will be re-released in October. Bar none, this is the FUNNIEST spoof I have ever read. Although I liked "Auntie Mame," it pales in comparison to the tale of stage and screen star Belle Poitrine. I laughed out loud several times every page. I have lent this book to friends who share my enthusiam for this utter masterpiece of satiric "celebrity autobiography". The many photos interspersed throughout are wonderfully done also. Feeling down? Need a lift? This extravagantly witty book will do the trick! Put it this way: "Little Me" out-cartoons New Yorker cartoons. I have no higher praise! I would give the book ten stars if I could.

Patrick Dennis is a Comic Genius
My God - I don't even know where to begin on how great this book is - pure hilarity from start to finish. If you are familiar with the work of Patrick Dennis, than you're in for a real treat. If his writings are new to you, well, you're in for a crash course.

Written with perfect, tongue-in-cheek camp humor, the autobiography of Belle Poitrine is the perfect send-up of the best Hollywood autobiographies - hysterically self-absorbed, condescending and - best of all - full of absolutely hysterical photographs by the great Cris Alexander. Belle's rise to fame from her childhood black sheep status, mid-life trials and tribulations, countless marriages (most often ending in widowhood) and more are all represented - once you're under the spell of her life story, the book is impossible to put down. And, please, do not rush to find out the ending - it's utterly priceless, and worth the wait, but to get the full, hilarious effect, you have to read everything leading up to it.

Read at your own risk - if you do, you'll surely be telling everyone you know about it - the humor is most contagious, and you'll be compelled to share. Enjoy!!!

Spiritual Divorce : Divorce As a Catalyst for an Extraordinary Life

Whether you are the one who leaves or the one who is left, divorce is a painful, wrenching experience, explains author Debbie Ford. Since Ford is comfortable dwelling in the shadow side of life, it's not surprising that she believes that the excruciating pain of divorce can lead to enormous spiritual growth. "Emotional turmoil can be a powerful catalyst to reconnect us with our divine nature," she writes. "It propels us into a journey of self discovery and urges us to learn how to love and accept our entire being." Herein lies the promise of a "spiritual divorce."

Because Ford is a highly effective workshop leader, she has a knack for breaking down spiritual matters into manageable bites. She is also willing to share the truth of her own painful divorce, allowing readers to see her initial pain and consuming resentments. Ford divides her book into seven laws, beginning with the "The Law of Acceptance," where readers are asked to imagine a benevolent divine order at play rather than taking a blaming stance. In the section titled "The Law of Responsibility," Ford encourages readers to gently begin the process of taking responsibility for their own darkest qualities. This is the thrust of Ford's highly respected shadow work--illuminating the dark side so we can stand in divine light. Each section ends with "Healing Action Steps," where Ford suggests specific exercises or meditations. For example, in the final chapter Ford asks readers to make a new "divorce vow" that is a lifelong commitment to one's highest self. --Gail Hudson

Lightweight
If you like gushy mushy gab about relationships, love, and forgiveness, all told in parables and ancedotes, you'll love this book. The slant is from the issue of divorce but it is like thousands of other self-help books out there. If you want practical, analytical help don't buy this book.

Not for Divorcees Only -- A Book that Will Transform All
Don't believe it. This isn't just for divorcees. This book is for anyone who has fallen in love and then felt deeply betrayed -- whether by a parent, a spouse, a lover, a sibling or friend. Ms. Ford understands the pain and helps you transform bitterness and hurt into spiritual liberation and strength. Spiritual Divorce is one of the BEST books on forgiveness I have read, along with Gerald Jampolsky's Forgiveness book and the Prathers' book, Letting Go. It will change your life. Thank you, Ms. Ford!

"Blessed by divorce."
"A Spiritual Divorce is one in which we use our divorce to improve our lives and our experience becomes one of gain rather than loss," Debbie Ford writes in the opening pages of her 209-page guide to an extraordinary life after divorce. "A Spiritual Divorce brings us back into the presence of our highest self and heals the split between our ego and our soul" (p. 5). After studying Transpersonal Psychology at JFK University (p. 29), Ford became a healing workshop facilitator at the Chopra Center for Well Being. She writes from experience, and she knows the pain of divorce.

The "divorce drama" leaves many of us feeling diminished and bereft. I've learned from my own experience there is no set timetable for recovery from divorce. After my divorce, while others advised me to "get mad and get over," my heart told me to embrace my loss and integrate it along with the pain into my new life. This is also the premise of Ford's book which, after several readings, has helped me move beyond a very painful place in my life. She encourages us to step into the storm of of our turbulent emotions, for "we can't heal what we can't feel" (p. 80). The painful experience of divorce represents "a sacred and significant time" in our lives that provides us with an opportunity to know our deepest selves (p. 80). In that respect, divorce is like a gift from the universe.

After an insightful Foreward by Neale Donald Walsh, Ford's book follows "The Seven Spiritual Laws of Divorce:" Acceptance (pp. 11-38); Surrender (pp. 39-56); Divine Guidance (pp. 57-74); Responsibility (pp. 75-126); Choice (pp. 127-66); Forgiveness (pp. 167-86); and Creation (pp. 187-210), showing us along the way, that the breakdown of one's marriage is for the highest good (p. 9), that suffering is really nothing more than the difference between what is and what we want it to be (p. 49), and that we have a choice in how we interpret our experiences (pp. 136-47). Ford encourages us to think of divorce as an enlightening experience, a spiritual wake-up call, and an opportunity for renewal rather than ruin. For anyone hoping to recover from a failed relationship, SPIRITUAL DIVORCE is a step in the right direction. And for anyone who has made the painful journey through a failed marriage, reading Ford's SPIRITUAL DIVORCE might just leave you wanting to send your ex-spouse a thank-you card.

As Catch Can
Published in Paperback by Dell (08 February, 2000)
Author: Vincent Zandri
Amazon base price: $6.99
Used price: $0.68
Collectible price: $16.26
Buy one from zShops for: $2.00
Freelance journalist Vincent Zandri was collaborating on the memoirs of a Sing Sing prison guard when he got the idea for a thriller about a warden who has to solve a crime to keep his job and his self-respect. This solid base of reality plus Zandri's lively writing give As Catch Can a definite edge.

Jack "Keeper" Marconi knows he's in trouble when a cop killer named Eduard Vasquez escapes from his Green Haven Maximum Security Prison in upstate New York after a trip to an outside dentist which he had approved. Keeper is clearly being fitted for a frame by his superiors in the state's penal system--men with whom he shared a baptism of fire as young guards during the bloody riots at Attica 26 years before.

Haunted by these ghosts of his former self and a time when justice seemed more clear-cut, Keeper goes off on his own to see who really helped Vasquez escape. Recently widowed and fogged by too much booze, Keeper could easily have become a rerun of an all-too-familiar genre icon. But Zandri makes both the man and job interesting and original by paying attention to details--from the way the weather affects the prisoners' behavior to the delicate balancing act that governs the relations between guards and prisoners. And there's more than enough creativity and research left over for a promised sequel. --Dick Adler

Average review score:

A non-stop fast-paced thriller about prison corruption.
I Just finished reading Vincent Zandri's powerful first novel, "As Catch Can". It's a non-stop thriller with all too vivid characters who come to life in the reader's mind. The narration is fast paced and certainly held this reader's interest. The plot revolves around a prison warden who is caught in a situation where he is accused of dereliction of duty in permitting a cop killer inmate to escape from his maximum security prison. Life inside the prison is depicted in graphic detail, reflecting the problems of life behind prison walls. One of the most striking parts of the story deals with flashbacks of a fictional (although based on fact) account of the Attica prison riots of 1971 in which many of the CO's were tortured, raped, and murdered by the mutinous inmates. I found these descriptions hair raising, arousing feelings of horror at the extent of human degradation possible. The story depicts modern day vice and corruption, as well as Keeper Marconi's spiritual capacity to "play fair" in a game that's rigged against him. The book makes thrilling reading that doesn't allow the reader to put the volume down. It's the kind of novel that should become an edge-of-the-seat movie thriller. If you like crime thrillers, this is the book for you.

Robert Ludlum meets Shawshank Redemption.
Vincent Zandri has crafted an almost surreal account of the depravity surrounding the state prison system of the late twentieth century. After my initial shock at Zandri's descriptions of prison life (not only the terrifying descriptions of the Attica riots as seen from inside the walls, but also the daily life within a "normal" prison) and the initial adrenaline rush of the plot-twisting story (it's not like a roller coaster, it's more like a free-falling nightmare), I was left with the real message of this book, which is about healing. A man tries to heal after a terrible loss, a woman slowly heals from an abusive relationship, a prison system goes through the painful and violent healing process after a corrupt administration. It is also about those who cannot heal and how debilitating lingering wounds really are. Zandri does an extraordinary job of opening the very private world of male grief and making it accessible. Zandri's novel is dark, almost brooding, but its message is ultimately hopeful and one is left with a sense of ironic optimism. Zandri also has left some strings untied, leaving me eager for a sequel.

Sublime!
Without question, Zandri's finest work since "Rice for Edna."

Working : My Life as a Prostitute

Excellent job description of your profession
Delores French did an excellent job protraying the profession of "working" as it is without getting into trying to talk the reader out of it. Like it or not, prostitution is a profession. Anyone who reads her very informative publication will learn this message. In her pages, Delores goes into her "pilgrimage" from working into the traditional world into the various worlds that comprise sex businesses. She describes her work throughout the world and seeks to decriminalize the field. For those who want to learn about this field and has been seeking a "career" guide, I recommend you read these pages. For those trying to talk people out of working in this field, I hope you read Delores account, as she does a good job protraying the field in it's objective light.

Enlightening!
I was amazed to find such an eye opening book. It changed my perception of prostitutes and prostitution radically. I'm definately a Dolores French fan.

The best book on subject & educational one.
I fully agree with the author. I know best about prostitution as my mother was prostitute from age 15 to 61, my sister,wife,2 daughters are also in same business. We all are very happy & proud of this business. We have never cheated any customer. We donate for charity too.I hope that our future generation will continue this business with same honesty & dedication. We never refused aged or bad looking clients.

Peter Cameron's sublime, beautiful novel City of Your Final Destination concerns true love and a young academic's struggle to break free from a life he's molded but doesn't want to live. Omar Razaghi, who's pursuing a Ph.D. at a Midwestern university, fudges his application for grant money, stating he has already obtained authorization from the family of the deceased minor novelist Jules Gund. When he belatedly seeks permission to proceed, the three executors--Gund's brother, Adam; former wife Caroline; and Arden, Gund's mistress and mother of Gund's daughter, Portia--decline. Prompted by his girlfriend, Deirdre, Omar shows up unexpectedly in Uruguay, seeking to convince the family of his--and their--need for a biography of Jules Gund to exist.

Cameron is an able storyteller, and his command allows the prose to flow simply and beautifully; here, most every word counts. Adam's often hilarious wit and Caroline's recalcitrance are sharply drawn, descriptions are in crisp relief, and Cameron gives us many reasons to smile: "Pete stood there for a moment, as if he were deciding, trying to think of a reason why he must stay with them, but he was not clever enough, and so of course he had to leave." The City of Your Final Destination is a refreshing look at the impact of desire and love on quirky, elegantly drawn characters. --Michael Ferch

As good as a novel gets...
I read this wonderful novel after reading Richard Eder's rave review in The New York Times. For once, a critic's hype was absolutelyl justified. I haven't read a more beautifully written and satisfying -- not to mention howlingly funny -- novel in ages. Peter Cameron gives you everything you want from a novel (or at least everything I want): amazingly complex and sympathetic characters, a gorgeous depiction of scene and event (it's no wonder Eder claims the book would make a fantastic movie -- you can almost see the movie as you read the book, it's so vivid and alive), the smartest, wittiest, most moving dialogue of any contemporary writer, and a hurtling plot that encompasses all sorts of human questions of morals and manners and love. The book is a light as a summer breeze, but has considerable depth -- it is explores its moral quandries with the sort of effortless, sure touch of E. M. Forster. My tastes may be old-fashioned, but I didn't think people were writing novels like this anymore: smart, beautiful, supremely moving. No cynicism or authorial ego here. Yes, it's conventional, but wow is it a wonderful book.

Enchanting
I just read Peter Cameron's new novel after reading its glowing review in the New York Times. I'd read and enjoyed his other novels and short stories, and so I was happy to see that he had a new novel out. This one is more light-hearted than his other books but doesn't sacrifice any of the elements that made the other books satisfying to me. His elegant writing and almost uncanny way with dialogue is still on display. Most important for me, though, is the way Cameron manages to convey so much about his characters in such few words. Each of the characters is interesting and unique. It's a really fine book.

Such a charming book!
This book is such a wonderful, enjoyable read. The descriptions stick with you - even weeks after reading this book I think back to the dusty path to Adam's house or the orchard with the bees or even the oft-disappearing dog, Mitzie. We read this book for book group and people were divided - some thought the plot was quite slow, but I personally felt compelled to find out what happened with Omar's grant and with his love.

Unschooling, a homeschooling method based on the belief that kids learn best when allowed to pursue their natural curiosities and interests, is practiced by 10 to 15 percent of the estimated 1.5 million homeschoolers in the United States. There is no curriculum or master plan for allowing children to decide when, what, and how they will learn, but veteran homeschooler Mary Griffith comes as close as you can get in this slim manual. Written in a conversational, salon-style manner, The Unschooling Handbook is liberally peppered with anecdotes and practical advice from unschoolers, identified by their first names and home states. The book also includes resources such as one teenager's sample "transcript," a typical weekly log of a third-grader's activities, and helpful lists of magazines, online mailing lists, Web sites, and catalogs. Griffith, a board member of the Homeschool Association of California (and the author of The Homeschooling Handbook), names Margaret Mead and Thomas Edison as two examples of those who have profited from unschooled childhoods, and further claims that research validates support for this controversial form of education. The "evidence" she cites, however, is predominantly theoretical writings from noted educators about the benefits of child-centered learning. The handbook suffers from a mild case of the Lake Wobegone syndrome--every unschooled children is seen as an above-average self-starter on the verge of genius--yet despite this overly rosy approach, the book is a well-organized guide for homeschoolers and other families contemplating the "un" life. --Jodi Mailander Farrell

Be VERY Careful Before You Tread
If the direction of training you are to give your children should be up to their own interests and desires, perhaps you should not teach them to brush their teeth either. They will pick it up on their own if they have an interest. If they don't still you save a lot of your time when you don't have to create the toothbrushing cirriculum for them.

The inmates can very easily begin running the asylum if these concepts promoted here are taken in just about EVERY way that most people will take them.

If you don't want to mess with your kids' education but you still want the feel-good experience of telling your church friends that you homeschool, then let your kids learn what they want. But it is your job to mold them and train them. For example, they don't like certain foods until you train them to like them. But the unschooling concept has a problem with that concept.

You should approach this with grave caution.

Whole world should return to unschooling
I had heard of homeschooling before, but not of unschooling. Having read the book, and the comments in it from unschooling parents and children, the latter is definitely what I would choose for any children of mine. Tell you what, after reading it I wished I had been 'unschooled'! Unfortunately, I haven't, however, I reckon with my kids, whenever they come along, I can make up for a lot of what I've missed, by learning alongside them. I'm looking forward to that opportunity! The book is excellent in that it not only clearly explains the concept of unschooling, it also gives practical examples of how the children get an interest in learning to read, how mathematics and science are included in every day life, how history and the arts become wonderful day trips to museums, etc. On top of all that it has a chapter on 'coping with doubts and challenges', and each chapter has a long list of reference books where more info can be found. In short, a real gem. The whole world should return to unschooling I think. I highly recommend it.

I UNSCHOOL AND IT WORKS!
It is a 'good thing' that this book is available. Running an egroup list for unschooling parents, I know that it can be difficult for some folks to understand the concept. Also, there are many kinds of 'unschooling' approaches from the 'radical unschooling' families to the kind like mine where we do use worksheets off and on and use a lot of educational tv and computers. I can highly recommend this book for those thinking about using this different way of homeschooling. One thing I can assure you is that your child will never 'HATE' learning.
