Best book I've ever read in my whole entire life!
This book was really funny. I especially liked it when Wally thought the pink gunk was an atomic bomb. I don't like to read much, but I really enjoy reading Bill's books. He makes reading fun.

Funnyville
The Wally McDoogle series is my favorite series of books. Bill Myers is my favorite author. I have all of this books, and thought that it was time to review all of his books. My Life as a Torpedo Test Target is definatly one of the funniest books he wrote. Wally McDoogle, a really clutzy kid (and a dorkoid), goes treasure hunting with his 2 friends; Opera, and Wall Street. And all kinda of crazy stuff happens. Like a missing person, starange under water creatures, etc... and of course with Wally there, everything that can go wrong will go wrong. So after screwing everything up, he learns his lesson of greed, and how the love of money can destory everything... even things that didn't do anything wrong. Read it, it's a great book.

This was a great book and very funny.
I am 10 years old. I loved this book. It was funny and kept me laughing. I think Christian kids and non-Christian kids would like this book.

Even my dog liked this book!!
I am 10 years old and really enjoyed this book. It was very suspenseful and exciting. I liked how the author made the main character a total klutz. He had a choice at the end which required him to make a choice of what was right and what was wrong. Overall I thought this book was very humorous and worth reading

personal growth through love
The Inner Lover - Using passion as a way to self-empowermentbyValerie Harms. Aslan Publishing. 1999. 225 pp.

Valerie Harmsunderstands that not all love is meant to result in a relationship with the person arousing the love in one. Circumstances, including a relationship with someone else, may stand in the way. When such love is aroused, individuals often feel troubled from frustration, guilt, doubt, or a mixture of these and other emotions. But as Harms teaches, this need not be the case. As she says, "When we become attentive to our fantasies and dreams [aroused by love], loving and not condemning our deepest wishes, we give them a chance to direct and empower our lives." Adhering to this principle, she teaches how to make such love a positive experience.

In exploring this kind of love, Harms focuses on the self--how the self can maintain its wholeness and singular potential and be empowered by the love's creative, unpredictable forces. This positive involvement with the love she explores not only fulfills one as a person, but also enhances one's place and value in all relationships. Harms has one of the best understandings of love a reader can find. Among her previous books are "Stars in My Skin/Nin, Montessori, Steloff" and "Unmasking: Ten Women in Metamorphosis."

Helpful and inspiring view of romantic attractions.
This book bravely goes where no woman (or man) has gone before. While many will be familiar with the concept of projection in relationships, few authors have illustrated in such a clear and personal fashion the value of fantasy, passion and the place it has in our lives. This book encourages us to open and explore who we are, using our romantic attractions as a point of departure.

The use of personal examples makes it very clear how using dreams and symbolism can help us understand what it is in ourselves that needs developing. However, the book does not limit relationships to "mere" projection; it acknowledges that the inner and outer world work together. Both need to be recognized.

It is a pity that this book is out of print; this book is most helpful for the individual who is trying to make sense out of what sometimes seems like a very difficult realm to deal with. Many books do not honor the spirit of romantic attractions, and the relationship they have to our deepest self. The personal examples (bravely given) help elucidate this journey, and encourage us each to similar acts of courage in personal exploration. I have personally read this book several times, and I recommend it highly.

What kind of review?
Are there words to be found for this book? I wish courage to all those who want to give it a try and read it. Life gets different after the experience...

A Philosophy of Spiritual Activity
This is a new translation of Rudolf Steiner's most important work. It has an especially good introduction by Gertrude Hughes Reif. However, I preferred the two older titles: "Philosophy of Freedom" and "Philosophy of Spiritual Activity" because the significance of the experience of the book comes across better for me with those titles. This is not a book that can be "read" in the usual sense. It must be worked on because it forces you to think about your own thinking. Through this difficult process you yourself discover your spiritual self, your "I" being. This book should be the most important book of the last 100 years, but it hasn't been because there are not many people who want to discover themselves. That is too fearful and difficult. It is much easier to be asleep or to belong to a religion or to have a guru. For anyone who is brave and courageous about "Know Thyself!" this is THE book.

Ever wondered how you KNOW anything?
Perhaps one of the most significant questions you can ask in your life: How can I know anything? How can I feel sure that what I hold as the basis for reality has any reality at all? These and other significant life questions are worked through in this remarkable philosophical work. Be prepared to do your own work as you follow the intuitive path that has been carefully outlined by Rudolf Steiner. The careful reader will find few books more deeply satisfying. I have returned to re-read it many times.

iSeries and AS/400 SQL at Work

Best reference for SQL
This book is the perfect book for you if you are writing SQL on the AS/400 or using a ODBC/JDBC to submit SQL to the AS/400. It contains all the little-used gems that make your job easier. In addition, it shows both the common and uncommon uses of SQL in clear, practical examples you can easily repeat.
It's organized so that a programmer under the gun can easily find what they need and get on with the project. In my opinion, it is "THE" essential reference for SQL on the AS/400.

Great learning tool !
Anyone working with AS400 query should look into buying this book. Not only does Howard explain how SQL works, he also gives working examples with the sample data included on the CD. Now using AS400 query seems a little odd and very cumbersome.

His writing is laid out very well and easy to read. While reading this, I felt that he was actually there explaining the chapters to me as a one on one instructor.

Great Job!

Best for PC/400 software developers
If you wondered how to call AS400 programs from your Visual Basic program correctly, this book is your one source for how to do it.

First book on the market that answered all of my client/server questions when I deal with PC to AS400 programming tasks!

Not only does Howard do a good job of explaining how stored procedures work, but gives some great coding examples on how to get you up and running correctly. He goes the extra mile and talks about performance too, one thing that normally is lacking in many others out there.

Nice job Howard. Look forward to others in the future!

The only guide for processing acorn!
As a friend of Julia Parker, I know her gentle spirit to be true to the Old Ways. She grew up in the last days of the government-sponsered "Indian Schools" which basically stripped native children of their heritage and turned them into little white kids. So on the surface this book is a guide to processing acorn in the ancient ways of the native California Indians, but it's also testimony to Julia's spirit and the rediscovery of the life skills and spirituality of her people.

Acorn is central to The People -- it is the primary staple food of the Indians of California and sustained them through the winter. A bad crop of acorn meant possible starvation, so the food is treated with respect and tradition throughout the process of turning it from a bitter nut to a sweet flour for making soup or bread.

The book is beautifully photographed and gives detailed instructions for how to make acorn both the traditional way with a granite mortar and sand pit and the modern way with a blender and kitchen sink. I have watched the Indians of Yosemite Valley make acorn many times and have made acorn myself, so I can assure you that the instructions will help even beginners make acorn for themselves.

The absolute best guide to acorn processing
I spent years learning how to properly process acorns, so that they were yummy to eat. I tried all the recipes in the wild edible books, and my own experiments. Reading this book gave me the simple but crucial details I was missing to turn out good acorn every time. Its not hard, you just got to do it right. This book is the only one I know of that will show you all you need to know. Otherwise its a fairly bland book, with a little too much heroine worship by the author.

Food for bodies and spirits in Native woman's account

California Native Americans used acorn as a staple food, and still reverence it. "One must create a relationship with the tree, one must understand the ground which cherishes the fruit so lovingly." But that understanding is not mere words, it is a vast array of knowledge -- and a special technology of place. Julia Parker, Kashia Pomo, who married into the Yosemite Mono/Paiute family headed by elder Lucy Telles, spent many years learning the lifeways that Lucy taught by example.

Julia tells anthropologist, writer, and friend Beverly Ortiz the story. of acorn preparation through a seasonal round. It is Julia's story, but it is also the story of California Native women over thousands of years. Many photos (by Raye Santos, of Julia preparing acorns; family activities and people from the Telles and Parker family albums; and from 19th and 20th century Yosemite National Park Service collections) make clear the intricate technology these women developed. The process, followed step by step from the story and photos, is shown as part of a life-and-seasonal cycle. The acorns, gathered from the ground, should be dried for a year before being shelled and pounded into meal and flour. The meal is then leached of bitter tannin in shallow sand basins, then separated and cooked with hot rocks in water-tight woven baskets.

The careful explanation of each step in the long process of food preparation is enlivened by Julia's personal recollections of traditional family life, and the cultural/spiritual/social meanings of all the activities. This is a fascinating way to understand Native lifeways, full of life and meaning. Readers will understand, from this woman's inside view, why the book's title -- It will live forever -- is true. This is not an academic account of a dead past; it is a lifeway still alive. At Native events in California today, women still take the time and trouble to prepare this traditional food and experience their closeness to the earth, and their cultural survival as a people.

There is enormous contrast between this lively account of Native women, maintaining life, and the distancing, dead accounts by male anthropologists and historians, which mount Native cultures and lifeways with a freezing academic objectivity, as if they were bagged specimens dead and long gone. This book is highly recommended for young people, as an alternative to the deadly, boring, and incorrect accounts prepared for young people that purport to present archaic Native societies. Those awful books form a minor industry among textbook publishers. This book is a delicious antidote to such multicultural poisons. -- Reviewed by Paula Giese, editor, Native American Books (http://www.fdl.cc.mn.us/~isk/books/bookmenu.html)

It's the End of the World as We Know It, and I Could Use a Drink

Action-packed and thought-provoking
After reading the first few chapters of "It's the End of the World, and I Could Use a Drink", I realized I had jumped into an action-packed book with a compelling storyline. As stated on the book cover, Scott Sherman has written a work of fiction that, incidentally, happens to be true.

Despite the dire situation spelled out in the first pages, the book's humor is what initially captured my attention. It had been a while since I laughed out loud reading a novel. I found it oddly reminiscent of Neil Simon. It is genuine humor, derived from the uniqueness of the individual character. Instead of jokes, which any character can recite, the funny stuff here comes from a misunderstanding of speech or action between the colorful cast of characters, or from a simple play on words. As someone who doesn't relate to most of what passes as comedy in the entertainment realm of today's culture, I enjoyed the natural, pure humor in Sherman's writing.

Sherman wrote the book in first person as well as third person, alternating by chapter and denoting with different fonts. I found this to be unique, and it helped the flow of the story while giving the reader an insight into Sherman's struggle as a writer. It is one of the book's strengths.

The general style of writing is fluid. Easy to read, yet very informative of the momentous challenges facing the world, as we try to balance the demands of commerce with the growing realization that our planet is fragile and its resources are far more precious than we have perceived.

Man's relationship to nature has been the subject of many books. What makes "It's the End of the World, and I Could Use a Drink" different is that it is told with an ecological urgency that is noteworthy. In Sherman's world, time is of the essence and the result not only gives the reader a significant reason to think a bit more about the environment and our sources of energy, but also provides a fun, action-packed reading experience that would translate easily to the big screen.

Eco parody at its best.
The author has written an amazingly complex, yet entertaining, work parodying those environmentally correct views we all hold so dear. This is an unusual find for the enviro seeking a chance to laugh at herself, and at the same time be engrossed by a well crafted comic drama. This is a finely written and readable work for a first author. You have to read this book.

Undoubtedly the Book of the Year
Scott Sherman's book is a must read. From the second I turned the pages, I was thrown into a fabulous adventure full of intrigue and suspense. As if that wasn't enough, there were so many parts where I just couldn't stop laughing hysterically. This book has it all!!! Most importantly, Sherman skillfully illustrates concerns about the environment and provides positive prescriptions of what we can do as individuals which left me inspired and hopeful about the future. Sherman is undoubtedly my favorite new author of the year! I can't wait until his next book comes out.

James P. Cannon As We Knew Him

Portrait of an American communist
The reminiscences in this book are a wonderful insight into the personal and political life of James P. Cannon, a key revolutionary figure in the 20th century. Cannon took on tremendous challenges, such as standing up to the rise of Stalinism and speaking out against US entry in World War II. His actions sometimes isolated him from former comrades and coworkers and even landed him in prison. But as these stories show, Cannon took these events in stride. His goal was to build a revolutionary party that could lead the working class to power and he knew it wouldn't be smooth sailing. He embraced life, never lost his sense of humor, and was always ready for the next battle, whatever the odds. Because of their many years of close collaboration, this book contains some anecdotes and background information about Cannon's companion, Rose Karsner, another pioneer communist in the United States.

If you haven't read History of American Trotskyism or The First Ten Years of American Communism, both by Cannon, pick those up as well.

a revolutionary fighter for three generations
James P. Cannon began his political life in the days of Eugene V. Debs. He became a partisan of the 1917 Russian Revolution, a founder of the Communist Party of the U.S., a defender of Leon Trotsky, the leader of the Socialist Workers Party, and a fighter against imperialism and capitalism until his death in 1974. Thirty-three of his comrades, friends, and relatives review his life -- as a revolutionary, as a friend, a grandfather, and a human being. To be a true fighter, you must be a total person. This book explains an extraordinary example of that.

More than one man, but decades of struggle in this book
...
The bulk of this book is the speeches given at the 1974 New York Memorial Meeting for James P. Cannon, a leader of the IWW, the Communist Party, and the founder of the movement that became the Socialist Workers Party, a meeting I was privileged to attend. The speakers span several generations and range from Roger Baldwin who founded the American Civil Liberties Union to Jack Barnes, National Secretary of the Socialist Workers Party. In memorializing Cannon as a thinker, a fighter, an activist, a writer, they speak not just of the importance of one human being, but of the legacy of principled working class politics, the lessons of struggle, and the faith in humanity that Cannon brought from the generations of fighters that preceded him, from the generations he represented. Though it has been 28 years since this meeting, we need the lessons, the principles and the struggles concentrated in these speeches.

Simply The Best
Of the three Japanese books I have (one is about hiragana and the other is a katakana book, and the third is a kanji book), this one is by far the best. Instead of forcing you to memorize all characters and the syllables first, it uses real life examples, pronunciation rules, and public signs written in both hiragana (japanese) and kanji (chinese characters) to enrich the learning experience. The book also contains vital culture information regarding politeness and polite formal statements and words, bowing, rudeness, and how to act in public. As the author stated in the first few pages Japanese is a language which is approached on its own terms and that is exactly what she does throughout. A definite must for any person considering learning/studying Japanese or considering visiting Japan.

Better than the rest!
I bought about 3 books about Japanese and 2 computer programs, and let me tell you, this one was definately the best I ever bought. It has vocabulary in every chapter, simple to intermediate sentence structures, & 9 out of every 10 words learned are shown in Kanji/Kana forms. Animé fans who want to learn: get this!

this book it really good
This book,in my opinion, is really good to have if you know some japanese to guide you. They explain it really well and have conversational practices and answers in here. they include alot of vocabulary, and some kanji for it, but not alot.
